      They tried. The problem is they just get used for other far better deck engines and the game is made worse for it. Konami are IDIOTS when it comes to card design. They designed themselves into a corner where if they put too many deck building requirements into the broken card, it will just not work and if they make the cards generic then they just get drafted into other far better decks that break the game. Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes, Red-Eyes and God cards, there's literal hundreds of support cards for these archetypes but barely any ways to actually get them on the field, and even less to get benefits for having them in your hand. Konami just can't grasp that impossible-to-summon garnets in your hand are a hindrance, and when you need them, you can't get them out. When they do make support that gets them out, it works way better in some broken deck instead. I wish they made more cards like Blue-Eyes Jet Dragon, which is broken, but needs a Blue-Eyes somewhere. It rewards people using the actual deck and gives people abusing engines a shitload of bricks.

    • @CiaranMaxwell
      @CiaranMaxwell 9 месяцев назад +6

      The problem is that they just won't use those builds, then. The game has become nothing but engines, with any non-engine build being utterly worthless. If Konami were to stop making engines, people wouldn't use (or buy, which is more important) the new archetypes because they're too slow to compete with the old engines.
      Remember the days before engines, when the number of _total_ search cards that could theoretically apply to your deck could be counted on one hand and actual draw power ruled the day? Remember when a 60-card Dark Magician deck was not only viable, but powerful? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

      Unfortunate how in the TCG, merely the fact that a card is one of the major types of the game makes it unplayable really is more a ding against the TCG being casual unfriendly. Normal cards have the potential to be balanced around having amazing support and their archetype name comboing more easily into larger threats (like Summoned Skull being an archfiend, the Harpies being able to swarm and all being level 4s, and heck Gladiator Beast's Normal monster is one of the most useful because with unexpeted Dai and a large body, it merely being a Gladiator beast card that has some staying power and is easy to bring out facilitates the whole deck.) but that's coming from a Duel Links player who appreciates how a slower game allows the cards to function as expected. In the TCG...even Trap cards are a weakness cause they're "too slow" and need a turn to set and use. Yeah that's fine, but when they're consistently useless enough that people simply don't bother with the purple background... one of the core staples of Yugioh being counter attacks, it really again dings the TCG as "unplayable" A huge shame really.

      Honestly, Normal Monsters need an intrinsic buff to their whole mechanic.
      I have a couple of ideas that could do it.
      1.- Normal summoning vanillas need no tribute whatsoever regardless of level. We already have high level effect monsters that are as easy to summon as they come so Normal monsters could use help. The main detriment is that Normal monsters level 4 and below get no added benefit whatsoever. (Ancient Rules wouldn't be redundant tho since its rules say "Special Summon" without blocking the normal summon.)
      2.- Normal monsters could also get some level 9, 10, 11 and 12 while we are at it. Many cards are made to special summon monsters with huge levels so it adds additional help for more vanillas.
      Not sure if they would make a huge impact, but since effect monsters were supposed to be the "skilled but less powerful", Normal Monsters could get a boost from there.

    Other commenters have pointed this out also, but as a former Blue-Eyes player myself, it's something I've been thinking of as well: The biggest problem with decks that revolve around normal monsters is that they are bricks when they are in your hand. You'd almost always rather them be in the deck than in your hand, because if you have an effect that lets you summon one from the hand or deck and you summon it from your deck you go plus in card advantage, but if you summon it from your hand you go minus or break even. I even ran three Trade-In in my Blue-Eyes deck specifically to deal with bricking if I drew one of my Blue-Eyes, but the problem with that is if you're not bricking with Blue-Eyes and you draw Trade-In, you're now bricking with Trade-In! My thought is that if the cards that said "summon a Blue-Eyes White Dragon/Dark Magician/Red-Eyes Black Dragon from your hand or deck" had also let you draw a card if you chose to summon from your hand instead of the deck, so that you wouldn't go minus, these decks would have been much more playable and the iconic monsters would have been much less bricky.

    • @Runenschuppe
      @Runenschuppe 9 месяцев назад +28

      Nah, Blue-Eyes has a very clear idea what it wants to do: Crush the opponent with big monsters.
      Its problem is that it still adheres to YuGiOh!'s design philosophy (either weak or difficult-to-summon effect monsters, situational spell cards, resource-intensive boss monsters, ...) while everyone and their grandma get to disregard that philosophy. I.e. there was no reason to make Baronne de Fleur a 3000 ATK beater in addition to its useful effects and generic summoning materials.
      Blue-Eyes suffers in the areas of consistency and recursion. New Blue-Eyes support rarely deals with that. Instead, its power level either has been power-crept for several years at time of release (a card which would have been fine six to seven years ago usually just isn't today) or is otherwise a retrain of a staple(-adjacent) card with additional restrictions slapped unto it. Which would be understandable if they came out when those staples are banned, but they either never were or have long since come off the list. The archetype has a lot of toys but everything needs either very specific conditions or specific additional cards available (whether in hand, field or graveyard) - which causes it to brick. Blue-Eyes is rife with cards who with just singular word changes would become useful. But alas... no buff erratas.
      Blue-Eyes actually does not need much to make it playable: 1. a Link-1 Dragon which allows you to set "Mausoleum of White" on summon and grants an in-archetype card from the deck when it hits the GY. 2. a powerful searcher which can add to hand or set/summon to field Blue-Eyes monsters and cards which mention "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in their card text. 3. a continuous spell card which - while it is on the field or in the GY - states that cards that contain "Blue-Eyes", "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" or "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" in their name or card text cannot be negated by opponent's card effects. And (quickeffect) once per turn: Shuffle back a banished card or card from the GY into the deck, draw 1 card. (Because let's face it, with how resource-intensive Blue-Eyes is you just cannot play through negates.)

      The challenge of "fixing" a card comes from making other decks possibly broken rather than boosting the original archetype.
      Blue-eyes is an inherent brick so to make up for it, the original either needs a retrain (no longer THE blue-eyes) or a card that can compensate for the brick.
      This makes adding support to the original archetype a little difficult without forcing a pure engine because a massive advantage card that doesn't lock is likely to boost other decks instead of promoting the original

    To be fair, Chaos MAX is still a pretty damn strong boss monster. Protection from targeting is really good as a form of protection, and being protected from destruction effects as well means it's also immune to most non-targeting removal effects that are available to most decks. You'd need a non-targeting non-destruction form of removal, or something that can hit it for more than 4k, where it's attack stands. I'm not saying this latter part is hard, I put the 10k Utopia punch package in all of my decks that can go into Level 4 XYZ plays, but having a 4k beatstick, with how easy it is to bring it out, thanks to all the searchers, and having 2 fairly good ritual spell cards that can work for it (Chaos Form, Advanced Ritual Art) makes it pretty good in my opinion. Also, Abyss dragon usually searches Advanced Ritual Art, not chaos form. Heck, sometimes even fusion spells.
    Also, wasn't the anime art for Blue-Eyes also drawn by Kazuki Takahashi? You know, the one we got a Royal Rare copy of in Master Duel in a Blue-Eyes themed pack that costed 3k gems? If that could happen, I'm fairly certain we can get Blue-Eyes Alternative Ultimate Dragon in the game as well. Sometime, in the preferably not too distant future.

    • @OdekoMoon
      @OdekoMoon 9 месяцев назад +3

      Sure, but you need a specific two or three-card combo to bring it out (and have to play terrible normal monsters in your deck with ARA), and then once you get it on field it doesn't do anything proactive. You're putting a huge amount of resources into a card that loses to a single Mirrorjade and is only good at attacking.
      The average Chaos Max play is player 1 burning most of the cards in their hand to bring this out, and then watching helplessly as their opponent combos off and easily spins it with Knightmare Unicorn because Chaos Max doesn't interact with the opponent at all on their turn.

    • @Wortigon2000
      @Wortigon2000 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@OdekoMoon An average Chaos MAX play in my textbook, is going 2nd, putting an Iblee on your opponent's board, and hitting itfor 8k, all n round 2. Also, that "terrible normal monster" restriction you mentioned is eliminated, as where else would you use this card, if not in a Blue-Eyes deck? The whole purpose of that deck is to hit hard, and don't have a need to look back.
      Also, Unicorn targets as far as I know. Not gonna spin Chaos MAX back with that one.
      And it is a 2 card combo, yes. Alternatively, you can go controll on first round, with whatever floodgates you can jam in the deck without hurting yourself more than your opponent, and have Abyss Dragon search out the Chaos MAX combo for round 3.
      As for Mirrorjade, I might have gotten it as a random card in Master Duel, but I don't even use it, only in my DragonMaid deck, because fusions are almost always worse than synchros or XYZ, and are hardly worth their cost most of the time. Even in that deck, I only have it, because it has an Albaz package included.

    • @OdekoMoon
      @OdekoMoon 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@Wortigon2000 Oh you're right about Unicorn targeting, that's my mistake. Replace that with Underworld Goddess then.
      And if you're playing this going second, you're going to have a different issue -- Chaos Max could be the best card in the world, it's still going to lose to Baronne de Fleur negating Chaos Form. If you can get Chaos Max on the field going second AND give your opponent a 0 DEF monster it can win you the game for sure, the only problem is that getting to that point against a modern deck that went first is very difficult. The best going second decks are filled with board breakers and hand traps, not fragile two/three card combos and unsummonable normal monsters.
      As for Mirrorjade being a fusion monster and therefore not worth playing -- you're advocating for a ritual monster my friend, you should know more than anyone that sometimes cards can overcome the limitations of their summoning method when they have cards like Branded Fusion printed for them :P

    Blue Eyes Retrain:
    Blue Eyes White Lightning.
    Dragon type, Light attribute.

    Effect - This card is always treated as "Blue Eyes White Dragon". You can send one Dragon type monster from your deck to the graveyard, special summon this card. If this card would be affected by your opponents card effects (Quick Effect) you can banish one Dragon type monster from your graveyard, negate the effect. When this card leaves the field you can add up to two of your banished Dragon type monsters to your hand.
    Dark Magician Retrain:
    Dark Magic Sorcerer.
    Spellcaster type, Dark Attribute.
    Atk 2500, Def 2100, lvl 7.
    Effect - This card is always treated as "Dark Magician". You can discard one monster from your hand, special summon this card. When you're opponent activates a card or effect (Quick Effect) you can discard one card from your hand, negate the effect. Once per turn you can add to your hand or set to your field one Spell/Trap from your deck and if that card mentions "Dark Magician" in it's text you can add/set a second card.
    Red Eyes Retrain.
    Red Eyes of Darkness.
    Dragon type, Dark attribute.
    Atk 2400 Def 2000, lvl 7.
    Effect - This card is always treated as "Red Eyes Black Dragon". You can shuffle one Dark attribute monster from your hand into your deck, special summon this card. When this card is Normal or Special summoned you can add one Spell/Trap that mentions "Red Eyes" in it's text from your deck to your hand. While this card is face up on the field your opponent can only activate one Spell/Trap per turn.

XD The real issue is the attitude of "If you're not playing Zoodiacs, Burning Abyss or Tears or whatever, your deck sucks" and not being able to counter cause yeah, their decks do win all the time.... but it's not at all what Yugioh's supposed to be about. I treat it more like a puzzle game where you try to figure out how to make your favorite card work, regardless of win rate. Not watch a video on the winning deck list, copy that and waste 30 minutes of your friends lives trying rediculous combos turning the game into a math problem.

    While Blue-Eyes isn't meta by any means, I'm in the belief that you should be free to play whatever deck you wanna play, meta or not. I've always loved Blue-Eyes, Dark Magician, Red-Eyes, all sorts of anime decks, my absolute favorite being Galaxy-Eyes, and I've built a powerful Galaxy-Eyes deck and used it against friends and it's so much fun. As of me writing this, I'm even in the works of making Branded, Dogmatika, and will get around to making Sky Strikers, Labrynth and Exosisters. I even occasionally play Shaddolls and Salamangreats. Point being, if you love a deck, whether it is competitive or not, what's stopping you from building the deck and playing it for fun?
    Also as a video idea for next failed archetypes, how about Vylons? It probably doesn't need explaining why that deck failed, but it'd be an interesting watch

    honestly why didn't they just give both dark magician and blue eyes the harpy lady treatment? a nice powerful retrain with a good effect that is always treated as the original even in deck like cyber harpy lady. imagine alternative combined with a new "cyber harpy"-style retrain. having to rely on a vanilla is just such a huge downside.

    One note about Spirit Dragon to Azure Eyes combo... Azure Eye's giving protection from destruction by Card Effect means it doesn't destroy itself at the End Phase after being summoned by Spirit Dragon's effect, and as you can do the summon on your opponent's turn unless you get hit by a non-targeting banish or it gets destroyed by battle, it then immediately Special Summons a BEWD on your next standby.

    This deck needs a new support monster, that is also a lvl 8 dragon with 3000/2500, that can immediately summon itself through a quick effect and then move a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from the deck to the graveyard as its "cost" after successfully summoning itself, so it can summon itself regardless of Ash Blossom and as long as Blue-Eyes White Dragon is in the graveyard, it is uneffected by your opponents card effects for the rest of the turn. Additionally, it needs a regular effect to search any spell or trap mentionning blue eyes from the deck. In short, it needs a combo starter that isn't useless on its own and can be used for XYZ later.
    Blue eyes has a lot of emphasis on the battle phase, so it needs a card that can get it to said battle phase even if the situation is sticky, it also needs something that isn't bricky on its own, as well as searchable. If you want to make it even better, give it the can not be normal summoned or set limitation, that way it can be used in Drytron, which already works well to support ritual based blue eyes strats.

    What is it with a lot of these main character decks not making the cut competitively half the time despite all the support they get?
    I think HERO is the main exclusion, and even then that’s because multiple anime/manga characters used HERO cards (Rather than how Kaiba pretty much hogs the entire archetype to himself, which should really be illegal when you think about it).
    Also, I find it ironic how the Blue-Eyes White Dragon was amongst the rarest cards in the anime/manga world, yet it’s one of the most common in real life.

      Main character decks tend to be two things.
      -a messy mishmash of stuff designed for narrative variety rather than an unified game plan (if your MC just goes for the same play every time it's boring, but IRL it's how you win)
      -oriented towards big cool plays over control and consistency, because it's more dramatic that way (stuff like negates and free pops are the antithesis of building tension)
      Blue-Eyes and Dark Magician have the extra hurdle of nostalgia forcing them to be strapped to old-ass unsummonable vanillas. But in general, anime decks have trouble because they're designed to be fun to watch, not good.

    • @ButFirstHeLitItOnFire
      @ButFirstHeLitItOnFire 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@ExeloMinish
      Here’s an idea to mend both issues:
      These anime mishmash decks take ALL of the odd-job cards and compile them into a single overarching archetype, or at least multiple archetypes that are designed to play nice with one another.
      Kaiba’s cards like Saggi, Swordstalker, Battle Ox, Mystical Elf, etc… could all be retrained under the banner of the “Blue-Eyes”, giving them new effects based off their uses in other media while also providing support for each other… Maybe they could even convert their flavor text into appropriate effects. Swordstalker’s effect for example is, verbatim: “A monster formed by the vengeful souls of those who passed away in battle.” So you can give it a retain with the effect to special summon itself from your hand or GY each time a monster is destroyed by battle, along with other GY related effects (gaining ATK/DEF for each card in the GY, making your GY unaffected by opponent’s card effects, etc…)

    But giving the deck a new field spell that allowed you to either: normal summon 1 "Blue eyes" monster from your hand (in addition to your regular summon) or shuffle "Blue eyes" monsters back into your deck and redraw the same number of cards, alongside a new Level 1 tuner that could add the field spell (or mausoleum of white) to your hand would be a good start.

    Ideas for a suite of “Blue-Eyes” monsters:
    _Blue-Eyes Destroyer Dragon_ (LIGHT)
    Level 8
    Dragon/Effect
    _Can be normal summoned/set by using 1 “Blue-Eyes” monster as tribute. Cannot be destroyed. Can attack all of your opponent’s monsters once each. If this card attacks a defense position monster; Inflict piercing battle damage. If a card is destroyed, you can apply 1 of the following effects depending on the destroyed card’s card type (Each effect of “Blue-Eyes Destroyer Dragon” can only be used once per turn)._
    Monster: Increase this card’s ATK/DEF and your LP by equal to the total ATK/DEF that destroyed monster had while on the field.
    Spell: Add 1 Spell/Trap that mentions “Blue-Eyes” in it’s name or effects to your hand from your deck.
    Trap: Destroy 1 card on the field.
    ATK/3000 DEF/2500
    _Blue-Eyes Light Dragoon_ (LIGHT)
    Level 8
    Spellcaster/Fusion/Effect
    “Dark Magician” + “Blue-Eyes White Dragon” or 1 Dragon Effect monster
    _Cannot be destroyed by card effects. Neither player can target this card with card effects. During your Main Phase: You can destroy 1 spell/trap your opponent controls, and if you do, you can set 1 Spell/Trap from your hand, deck or GY. You can use this effect a number of times per turn up to the number of Normal Monsters used as Fusion Material for this card. Once per turn, when a monster(s) is summoned (Quick Effect): You can discard 1 card; negate that summoned monster(s) effects, and if you do, destroy it, and if you do that, this card gains 1000 ATK._
    ATK/3000 DEF/2500
    _Purple-Eyes Grey Dragon_ (FIRE)
    Level 8
    Pendulum Scales: 9⬅️➡️7
    _Your ”Blue-Eyes” and “Red-Eyes” monsters can be normal summoned/set with 1 less tribute, and if you normal or Flip summon a “Blue-Eyes” or “Red-Eyes” monster, you can conduct an additional Normal Summon/Set. Each time a “Blue-Eyes” or “Red-Eyes” monster you control removes a card from the field (By battle or card effect), you can apply 1 of the following effects, and if you do, you can then return this card to your extra deck (face-up or facedown):_
    ⚪️Add 1 “Fusion” or “Polymerization” card from your deck to your hand.
    ⚪️Normal Set 1 Normal or Gemini monster from your hand, deck or GY.
    Dragon/Fusion/Pendulum/Effect
    “Blue-Eyes White Dragon” or 1 “Blue-Eyes” monster + “Red-Eyes Black Dragon” or 1 “Red-Eyes” monster.
    (This card is always also treated as a “Blue-Eyes” and “Red-Eyes” card.)
    _This card that is not banished facedown is also treated as LIGHT and DARK-attribute. If this card is fusion summoned using the above materials or pendulum summoned: You can add 1 “Blue-Eyes” and/or “Red-Eyes” card from your field, deck or GY to your hand. “Blue-Eyes” and “Red-Eyes” monsters you control Cannot be destroyed, Can attack all of your opponent’s monsters once each, and if they attack a defense position monster; Inflict piercing battle damage. If this card would leave your monster zones, you can place it in your pendulum zone. Once per turn, You can tribute 1 card from your hand or field (Quick Effect): Apply 1 of the following effects:_
    ⚪️Special Summon 1 “Blue-Eyes” or “Red-Eyes” monster from your hand or deck.
    ⚪️Activate 1 Spell/Trap from your hand or deck that mentions “Blue-Eyes” or “Red-Eyes” in its name or effects.

    I'd like to see them start releasing support that gives the different builds consistency. Like how Chaos Max can use the impcantations but in archtype. Things that fix the bricky-ness if you are building that particular type of blue eyes deck so that you are running less pieces that could end up in your hand for plays you can't even make at that time. I think a new field spell that generates 'Blue eyes' tokens that are treated AS the vanilla for fusions/etc. would do wonders to help lower the vanilla count you'd want from 3 to 1 opening more deck space and less bad in hand cards to begin with. It wouldn't make it meta with just one card but it would help with the feel of the deck.

    I think the only way to make Blue-Eyes relevant would be to replace the bricky normal original monster with something that messes with the current metagame at the same time. To that end, introducing: Monster Light Affinity [Dragon/Effect] Level 8 ATK/ 3000 DEF/ 2500 - Blue-Eyes Vigilant White Dragon - (This card is always treated as "Blue-Eyes White Dragon".) When your opponent activates a card in their hand that negates an effect during your turn, Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, negate that effect.
    And yes, that's not once per turn. If you want meta relevance you need something that's BROKEN, not just good.

    It really helps that they've made BEWD structure decks available in pretty much every format. Letting anime fans get to learn the game and how combos work. My first DL deck was Blue Eyes. Using Cards of Consonance with Stone of ancients to go +2 and then normal Stone of Ancients, special Alt and Synchro felt really good.

    25:00 You mention that anime decks get continuous support. Maybe a top 10 list of most successful anime archetypes in the OCG/TCG? Performapal will likely be the most dominant in a specific format while Rokket probably have the longest total time of meta relevancy.

      @@Bob12649It's fast, highly consistent (with the right builds), capable of overcoming hand traps and setting up scary negation boards. I'm not sure it fits the current meta, but it shows enough potential to at least appear here and there after release.

    20:00 ok as a fellow BEWD player I kind of disagree with that statement. Especially with the support we have now. For one, it can be searched off of true light, and recurred via Tyrant dragon, not to mention it has some fun synergy with Skill dragon as if you have Tyrant dragon and skill drain active and activate this, it now allows tyrant dragon to be unaffected by Skill drain and unaffected afterwards because of his effect. So if you are under skill and are in a scenario where you need his effect, there you go! 😂

    I think Blue-Eyes -- and to an extent Dark Magician -- were made rogue/bricky intentionally by Konami. I've played a lot of online duels, and there are quite a *lot* of Blue-Eyes players you will run into, most likely due to nostalgia or they wish to be like Kaiba 😅 Imagine if Blue-Eyes was meta, considering it gets constant support, I think it would definitely bore people from the game 😬
