One trick I like to do is to imagine the parts that I don't like all that much is the theme of an enemy and the parts that I do like is the theme of the player character. It adds a layer of baddassery to the soundtrack if they are audibly fighting like some artistic trick. This can be heard in one of Red Alert 3's soundtrack where Frank Klepacki mixes the rock theme of the Sovjets and the electronic theme of the empire for a mission where the Sovjets invades the Empire.
One fight scenario in one chapter would suffice for a Frank Klepacki soundtrack. Like being surrounded by a lot of airships with a song like this. Obviously it's gonna sound a bit more tame for a Half-Life game.

At around 1:11 and 2:39, there's a weird sound I hear when the drums go, is that like the guitar making that sound or is there like a separate instrument making that sound? You can hear it after the guitar stops and the drum makes contact with the symbol, or whatever that piece is on the drum set.

That's just the vibration/echo from the palm-muted strings on a guitar. It has that disctinctive, clangy sound to it when done a certain way.
