  • Here it is! The long-awaited full live-in review of the Carado Vlow V600 after an intense two week 2,000 mile trip to Croatia and back. In this report, I talk about the exterior, the driving, and the interior citing the good points, the deal-breakers, any breakages or failures, and any niggles and annoyances.
    Remember that there is no such thing as a good van or a bad van - it is down to YOU and how YOU will be using your van.

    What a refreshingly candid and meaningful review. If all manufacturers were smart enough to use this approach, it would drive their quality standards up and attract more customers in doing so. I am now far more inclined to purchase things with real-life reviews than be lured by glossy brochures promising the earth but woefully under-delivering. I love your message to those who may spend more time and effort planning for after their departure from this earth instead of seizing each day, now while they are able to enjoy living it. Works for me! Love the footage and cinematography; spectacularly scenic and appealing. Please keep up the great work with your brilliant videos!

    Even watching these reviews years later, when the content could be considered out of date, they nonetheless make for entertaining and informative viewing. I really appreciate your balanced, honest, constructive approach to it, and it's to be hoped the manufacturers do too.
    Slovenia and Croatia are now firmly on my bucket-list of countries to experience.

    Love your review. One of the only ones that tested the vehicle instead of just gave a tour. Your reviews are more influential towards my purchase decisions than any other resource. Had lots of things I wouldn't have thought of even to ask such as if a key is needed for the water drain, or if the curtains fit, or where the table goes in transit, or BTUs of the stove. Also excellent organization of the video into segments and quality of the video was excellent. This is my current FAVORITE review video and I'm subscribed to quite a few vlogs. I'm happy that you keep getting better. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Andrew a great and honest review. We have to be honest the seats front and rear would put us off and not having outside lighting at this price is a little poor. Loved your final comment about making adventures etc. Thats why we bought a Caravan, so we could share with Alfie all our adventures. J&P

    Great review Andrew, A wise sales person said to me "get the layout that suits you and everything else falls into place". In selecting a Van / Motorhome everything is a compromise, some people need lots of storage, live mainly outside the Van and use it in good weather. This layout would work for them ... probably. Some of us older chaps use the Van in inclement weather, do not have lots of sports or activity gear and like to lounge about and go to the pub and socialise. A different layout is then required. I have learned that there is not a best layout but a layout best for your needs. We all need to keep that point in mind. Keep them coming. :>)

    Great review, thank you. I purchased the sister van, a Sunlight Cliff 600 last year. Yes the travelling seat is very upright (as seems to be the case in most if not all similar 'continental' front dinette layouts). And the washroom is cramped, though usable enough for me at just over 6 ft tall. The plus points with the van are the storage -- there's loads, a very good sized comfortable double bed, and the quality. Unlike Andrew's experience, everything in mine fits and is screwed together perfectly. Materials are high quality throughout -- very markedly improved on what I saw in equivalent Autotrails, Swifts, etc. Then there's the value. Negotiated to just under £37k for a brand new van, fitted with stereo, nav, camera, TV, bike rack. No metallic paint, and just the 115 engine - which after run-in is hardly distinguishable from the 130, and never fails to return less than high 30s m.p.g. (sometimes well over 40) on a long run. For the money, I couldn't find anything to touch it.

    Excellent end review as always Andrew. The deal breakers are fixable to make this an excellent package for touring the sunnier climates. The table scenario would kill it for me. They need to get that sorted. Also, no lumbar seat adjustments on a 50k vehicle is unacceptable in my opinion. If they get the design geeks onto these niggles, then they'll have a very competitive vehicle for the camping and touring market.

    Thanks for the review. I have the Hymer Aktiv 1.0 in the U.S. and was interested to see the differences since the Vlow and Aktiv look very similar. There’s a lot of similarities and differences. Price being one of the huge differences. Much more pricey in the US at a retail of $110,000 vs $67,000 in UK but mine come with the Ecotrek system which is the solar panels and lithium batteries so you can be off grid. I love mine and actually full time travel and live in it.

  • @spinnekopje
    @spinnekopje 6 лет назад

    A good review, thanks for that! I saw a couple of reasons why I would never recommend this van. First: the table, my parents have a shorter van and they don't need to remove the table, even when an adult sits on the back seat.After a while it will certainly annoy you to the point you don't leave for a short trip or sell the van. From all the vans I've seen this must be one of the very few where it is needed. Secondly: while our bathroom also is small and has its annoyances, flushing the toilet is something that should never be difficult to do. There are many models very similar without those issues, so I would recommend people to check out other brands. A couple of other remarks: use the arm rests while driving, that makes a huge difference for me. There are only a few vans that have outside lighting as standard or even as an option, but with a number of brands you can even get them fitted in the factory, although they are not listed in the option list. Otherwise it is certainly possible to retrofit them as a light bar under the awning or as a rain gutter above the sliding door.

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  6 лет назад

      Interesting points, thanks! I find this thing with the exterior lights nonsensical. All caravans have them over the door. As an ex-train guard, I consider adequate lighting for a step out of a door to be an essential, not a luxury. Broken ankles can really spoil a holiday!

    Really don’t like the layout of the two vans you’ve reviewed this year, with the bed across the back and those terrible, bolt-upright “lounge”seats. Any chance you’ll be getting your hands on vans with a comfy rear lounge, like the Swift Select, or AutoTrail V-line?

    I have to say that I agree with a previous comment that 50k is a lot of money for that van. I also agree that the table is a deal breaker with all the faffing. I suppose for some having hanging space would be use full but for us not a high priority, so the wardrobe seems unnecessary and with it not there you'll have a lot more room with another design.

    Nice final review. Not sure if any of the other comments mentioned but I suspect the reverse cam is part of the package with the stereo/nav which is approx £1200. I have specced this in a Hymercar Grand Canyon so I guess pricing is much the same. I was looking at a VLow but ended up with the Hymercar. I think a lot of your interior niggles are better in the Hymercar but it is a bit more expensive. I like your summary at the end, I have invested a lot of money (which is scary!) in a new van I have specced to my tastes so am hoping it will bring a lot of new experiences and memories.

  • @gasgas5510
    @gasgas5510 6 лет назад

    I like the fact that you talk about the deal breaker rubbish parts of the van, unlike the reviews posted by those who have vested interests in not saying anything bad. However I would say I don't understand why you feel it necessary to remove the table every time you drive anywhere. I've been using campers and motorhomes for 40 years and have never felt the need to do this. In fact the table on our new Fiat Ducato which is the same as your review, is so well attached to the wall that I have never felt inclined to remove it. A couple of things: You don't comment on where the washroom light switch is so I presume it is somewhere a child could reach, i.e. not a tiny button in the top corner of the ceiling? I have rewired many a caravan and camper light switch to relocate them into sensible positions. Referring to the seats, I would have thought that the basic frame and foam of the front seats would be the same on all Fiat Ducatos, the only difference being in the cover material. I agree that some of the rear seats would be different as they are made by the converter. I don't find the ones in our Pilote are at all uncomfortable: we have just returned from a 1000 mile-per-week tour of France and are quite happy with the seats. Cup holders: having had both, I much prefer the so-called laptop box to the cup holders between the front seats as I don't drink while driving. If I want a drink I stop, get in the back, make the tea and settle down there.
    That's weird not having spark ignition on the hob! I cannot imagine how little they save on build cost with that.
    £52,000 sounds like an excessive amount of money for a 6 metre PVC, specially without things like an auto sensing 3 way fridge. I would expect a solar panel and second battery, 3 way fridge, air con in the cab, and so on for that kind of money.

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  6 лет назад

      There was a safety label in six languages next to the table warning that it HAD TO be removed for transit. And this was backed up by Carado. I guess it is a crash safety issue. The washroom switch is indeed at waist height and fine for a wee 'un. Seat comfort is personal, hence I say 'I FOUND the seats to be uncomfortable' because I need a lumbar support which, ironically, you get on the 'basic' seats.

    • @gasgas5510
      @gasgas5510 6 лет назад

      Ah. It's nice to hear it had a sensible light switch. I have never seen a safety label requiring the table to be removed. I am surprised that there is a foreign Elf'NSafety committee worse than ours. I guess it is an insurance get-out-clause. I agree with you, I wouldn't buy one that had this requirement. I also agree that seat comfort is personal. A lot of campers have just rectangular slabs of foam, usually in the rear lounge area. These are usually a bad compromise between too soft for sitting on and too hard for sleeping. This is one of the reasons why we prefer to have beds separate from the lounge area. . . . .have you had any good experiences with electric lowering beds? I am on first name terms with the designer in Italy, also with the Production Manager at Rapido, and I have the full workshop manual. Let's just say that after 8 months of trying to get the thing working reliably it spent a lot longer back at the dealer than it did working. I got rid of it when after months of electrical problems, the axle shaft came out of the bearing at one end and it collapsed. Never again.

    Not for me, it looks great but a cramped dinner with bolt upright seats with no knee room for 2 is a seal breaker. Plus the bathroom looked annoying! And the binds!! it wood drive me round the twist. Andrew you said if you want a van for wild camping off grid in the woods you wouldn't recommend this van but what van of the same size would you recommend for that purpose?

    That table would be a deal breaker for me. The tiny washroom would also be a big problem. I think that a larger motorhome would be better for me, a small class C probably with loads of room for bicycle storage.

    Dear Mr. Ditton, thanx a lot for all the work and effort spent!
    Indeed your Scotland series inspired our summer vacation for 2018. Therefor I am looking for a Dashcam and some tips on how to handle reflections? Maybe there are one or two hints you could offer?
    kind regards and thanx ahead

    The layout is reasonable but someone at Carado had a bad day at the drawing board. Can you get into the rear passenger seats with the table up? I suspect that most buyers can't. Hob with no ignition? I have that make/type of fridge so thanks for the advice. Very good trip and a fair review.

    I liked the review. Certainly your length of time in the van made you aware of the good and bad. I think that your observations on the lounge, table, and drivers seats were fair and spot on. But why was Dougal so bored with it all? Did he disagree? Perhaps he really liked riding in the rear and looking out the windows.

    I wish someone would make a van with a layout like the westfallia Klepper one but on a Ducato or sprinter ie large COMFORTABLE L shaped front lounge mid side kitchen and rear loo but with a removable table to make the larger lounge dog friendly and with a drop down bed like the La Strada

    Another great review Andrew.
    We are trying to decide if a van conversion would be for us. I use our caravan for work, and setting up every 3 days is becoming a bit of a drag.
    We plan to go to the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf to have a look at all the models. A decent fixed bed is a must for us. We'd prefer a bench seat at the front, but the continental builders are dead against that layout.

    Fantastic review- 2 points. The uncomfortable upright rear passenger seats...watching dozens of reviews of camper vans I have always thought how uncomfortable those seats look like so I found it interesting you pointed it out as I have never ever seen anyone else mention it. This year, a Polish company- Globe-Traveller has introduced reclining rear seats to alleviate this very problem which I think is long overdue. Secondly, the outside light- would this not attract bugs, flies, midges etc at night? I do see the need for some type of lighting tho perhaps when sitting around late in the evening enjoying the camp fire. Thanks again for such an amazing review- gorgeous looking camper especially in that colour. The badly fitting table, doors etc would make me wary of purchasing one perhaps. Some companies will glue, in addition to using screws, all internal cabinets etc which prevents this problem and also makes the vehicle quieter while driving. Subcribed!

    I wondered... does the table have to be physically removed to turn the captains chair forwards? Say you just wanted to "moved the van a few meters"....

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  6 лет назад

      I couldn't turn the seat with the table in situ... but you can have it in place once the chair is revolved.

    Thank you for a very comprehensive review.... As you suggested, compromises are the rule when choosing a Class B van. For the mobile worker, having a large and sturdy table as was found in the V600 would make working remotely a joy. You seemed able to spread-out your work comfortably and I would accept the downside of having to remove it before getting back on the road.
    Ah yes, the bathroom. Unless you are diminutive, these mini bathrooms are a disaster. Only one company (IMO) has gotten it right. YT Video 'A Large Bathroom in a Class B RV: Advanced RV Client Innovation'. After a long day out in the woods, not having an adequate bath is a huge compromise.
    What's the backstory with the 'mouth under the tap' business? Is that a UK convention? Never seen a 'yank' do that [;-). In all seriousness, I have seen variations of that done in the military washrooms.
    Thanks, as always.

    Great review and end to the series
    I’m sure that a competent DIYer would be able to address the the door light issue - indeed I have just added a led strip in the gap between the body and door top which is only visible when on.
    Overall do you think the previous van with an upgraded engine would be the best of both worlds ignoring the access to the underbed storage of course.
    I often wonder if the designers of these vans actually use them in anger, having said that there’s lots of things I would change in my Citroen Relay self build.

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  6 лет назад +1

      Wow, you've just won my undying admiration for having the integrity to admit that there are even aspects of your self-build that you would change Steve! But yes, I do wonder if any designer has used the washroom in anger, or sat in those seats for an 8 hour journey. TBH I'd take the best aspects of both vans. I do more winter camping than most, and appreciate things like a mains element to the truma system which again, this van didn't have. I do prefer the kitchen storage layout of this one though.
