10 years later and this is still inspiring people!!! Thank you!!! Complete newbie to making quilts and I followed your start and made one for a kid in 32 minutes!
Hi, I'm so glad you enjoyed it and already made one! If you would like, please share your quilt with our community, just send a picture of your quilt here justhands-on.tv/contact-us/ Thank you, Happy sewing!
I saw this video over a year ago, nearly 2?? Promptly went to work on a quilt for my daughter. I finished it, "quilted" it with batting and backing. It's smaller than a twin size.. but I covered her up tonight with it, and smiled at knowing this is something she still treasures... She just turned 6 on the 11th. I hope that it will grow with her, to a nice lap blanket as she gets older. Thank you for the wonderful video!
What impresses me so much is how much scrap fabric is left after making a quilt - enough to at least make a good start on another one! As expensive as quilting material is, it’s wonderful to be able to make the most of every bit.
Oh Valery, WHAT a clever and sensible, simple and sweet idea of putting a bunch of scraps together. I LOVE how you got the short ones to connect - gotta watch that part again to get it right. Liked the music too, and ENjoyed the video. Not too tedious, not too brief - THANKS for sharing. Ushta-te!!
I’ve never quilted before, after watching this tutorial I am inspired to try and make my nephew a denim quilt for a house warming gift. That you so much.
Used this method using 6" strips from a fabric sample catalog (probably from the 90"s) adding jean fabric, a sheet, & a summer dress. This has been a fun project watching how all rectangles came together during my quarantining. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Susan! We are glad you enjoyed it and would love to see your project, please send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv to share with our community! Happy sewing!
What a great way to use up scraps! I have numerous strips. What a surprise it will be when it's done! Doubt it will only take me 40 minutes; But it's unique and fun and I will try it! THANK YOU!
Wait a minute, I had to watch this again! Out of only 2 extremely long strips she makes an incredible creation! I've never seen something like this! Awesome!
If the poster above you is correct and the first very long strip is 30 pieces long ( I think Jellyroll strips are 40"), it looks like she ended up with about a twin size quilt top. If you wanted a queen size, you would need probably 45 strips. But I'm totally guessing.
@@l.browning128 she said that her strips was leftover strips there is no proof that all strips are the same length as jellystrips but she told us it was about 30 strips so that is what I based it on. and if you make your own strips from scraps, there is no guarantee on the size you get in the end.
I can see my 9-year--old great granddaughter doing this. Now that she has to be home, it will be a satisfying project for her and some peace for her mom. I like that the quilter sped up the time as she was doing long strips. And music was good.
Hi, Mary! It is a fun project, so I think your great granddaughter will love it. Give it a try and please send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv to share with our community! Happy sewing!
So good to see this demonstration. It feels like home. My mom taught us to sew on a power machine. She worked as a factory seamstress, sewing piece work. Things were often hooked together with little threads and at some point she'd hand it to us to clip them apart and start the next phaze of the piece, while she went to start dinner. She always warned against perfection. She always said, just give it a try. She could alter a pattern and make up her own design and finish it all in one afternoon. She also didn't stop to press things much. It was all done before it was ironed, usually. What I know now is to keep it simple and fun and that I can know the 'rules' but I can do it my way too. She could make a tailored suit too. I was in awe of her knowledge. She never got frustrated over 'mistakes.' She just made lemonade out of lemons and it worked. I find a lot of quilting tedious so I need to be reminded that it can be simple and that there are efficient ways to put things together like you showed. I like that you weren't even sure how it might come out. Thanks for the video.
small footprint That's awesome you have those memories with your Mom....it made me smile...cuz you see, I'm a beginner, I mean trying to start my very first quilt kinda beginner!! LOL!! I used the word "trying" cuz I believe I've fallen into the "trying to be perfect" category, and it has quickly become no-fun and nerve racking!! So I'm thrilled I looked and looked for beginner videos that lead me to this one....and then to hear your story, I almost cried and took a big breath and giggled about how precious that memory is for you. My grandmother was a seamstress and sewed all of mine, and the rest of the dance school's costumes!! Yep! All of em!! I absolutely loved being measured for our recitals! I always watched with such admiration and I'd organize her whole sewing room too! It was OUR time together. She's gone now, and I know she'd be proud of me "just trying" and to enjoy it. SO! Long way around to finally get here, which is to HAVE SOME FUN!! Loved the video! And thanks for your story. 💕🙋😂
small footprint, wow...I really enjoyed your comment...especially your share of your very cool and wise mom; I am going to keep her sensible wisdom in mind...specifically when I am stressing out, once again, while making a quilt. Thank you so much!!!
I love your comment. This reminded me so much of my mum sewing at home, especially the way she talks under her breath, and kind of to herself, just before she starts the machine! So many happy memories ☺️
OH I have similar memories with my mom, she also could sew and did a lot of dresses for me and my sisters :) I AM thankful for your ever so important loving lesson from your mom about it not having to be perfect - that urge for perfection, have stalled so many of my projects, to a total halt! - recently I have been reminded of what you also mentions above - JUST HAVE FUN! with what you are creating - The feeling of JOY inside when you are creating is so much more important than perfection :) Thank you for your heartwarming story - Good memories :)
These quilts are great. I can make a crib quilt in about 4 hours, from starting the top, to binding. Great for beginners who just want a quick quilt. Great for "advanced" quilters who just want a scrap buster. No matter how old this video is, it is my go-to for quilt design.
Hi, Chris! Thank you! We would love to see your project, please send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv to share with our community! What an ingenious idea! Am going to give this a try....and I'm sure this can be done in less than an hour with getting your strips sewn together....OMGoodness this is a project to share with my granddaughters! Thankyou so much!
This was so much fun. I am now addicted to making these have made my friends some and they love them. I can do a whole quilt with backing and binding in one day. Has been a life saver for those last minute gifts for a few baby showers and BD parties I forgot about. Also, a great way to use up all those scraps laying around. Thank you so much. Even my G-babies love helping with these this was the first type of quilt my four-year-old granddaughter helped me make. She loves sitting with Mimi and sewing these.
I Crochet and Knit, i love to see others creativity. This is ingenious! I absolutely adore it, and to think that it was made by sewing and cutting. Plus you used all your scraps in such a beautiful way!! Love it!
you don't need to spend time making sure the strip is not twisted. Just start stitching the two ends and toward the end, if the strip is twisted, cut on the fold, straighten the ends and finish the stitch line. Saves a little time and frustration!
Absolutely loved this! I got a bag of color coordinated scraps I had cut to 4 X4 out of some old sewing stuff I had stored because my kids, mostly my daughter kept moving in and my sewing & craft room in my small 2bdrm. Apt. Never came to fruition! Shelves were put up and stuff got put on them and it quickly became a storage shed in addition to having to rent one for over a hundred bucks a month!I quickly lost my bedroom & king size pillowtop mattress bed and she and her boyfriend have been out for two years and I am still on the couch and boxes are sleeping on my bed!LOL! I even have a fold out loveseat I inherited but no longer have room to open it and when she moved out she took my rollaway bed with her AND The new pack & play I bought for my new &only grandchild!So..where can I sew?I set up a card table which I quickly covered with part of my button collection and have been putting together various projects I would like to do in the future then bagged and boxed them ,but have had them sorted and out for over a month. Now. ( not so sorted anymore because my 20 mo.old gr.son has 3 fav. places he runs to when he first gets here, my button collection to run his fingers through them and try to eat his favorites, then to my couch bed to rub his face on my very soft and fuzzy snowflake blanket, then to his one nic nac free shelf to play with a small vintage truck I bought him, and my 2 vintage VW Bugs that match my first car!) I use to own an alterations business for about 7 years until my seperation, then divorce 3 years later and have tons of supplies and collections. I would love to open a school for poor people trying to get off welfare.Anyway, I think finding your video was some sort of sign, because a few days ago I got those bagged scraps out, shoved the buttons aside to one half,a chair and half of another loveseat and started playing with the scraps from before my divorce in about 1995 when my son was only 4 years old, and he will be 26 in December 3 days after Christmas!
It’s pretty because your scraps were pretty. I think no matter what pattern, it all depends on the fabric choices as to how pretty it comes out. This is one of the nicest I’ve seen.
I LOVE making these! Fast and easy!! I've been picking up inexpensive Jelly Rolls at Tuesday Morning whenever I have an extra $20, now making them as bridal gifts for my Daughter's Bridesmaids!
That's lovely! It is fast, easy and lots of fun! Please share with us some of the quilts you've made at pictures@justhands-on.tv , so we can show them to our community! Happy sewing!
Since seem to gravitate to the same color scheme when making a project. So, I have trained myself to always cut a 2.5" strip from every fabric I purchase and keep them separate from other scraps. These strips would be perfect for this type of project! Its almost like this!
I love this idea and it would suit my personality to have a piece of every project as a memory all bound into a quilt like this. I can't wait until I have enough scraps to give this a try.
I bought a jelly roll forever ago and had no clue what to do with it. Now I have an idea. Thank you for posting this video. You looked like you were having a lot of fun.
I can't wait to try this because I save all of my scrap's and I am looking forward in trying this myself. Thank you for a great looking quilt and sharing your ideals. Lovely
Thank you! We would love to see your project, please send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv to share with our community! Have fun and happy sewing!
That's a beautiful quilt...and right up my alley! My mother and youngest sister were the quilters in the family...I preferred straight sewing as I didn't have the patience for all the geometric designs. This is an easy and gorgeous project! Thank you!
Hi, Karen! Scraps will work just as fun as jelly rolls. We would love to see your project, please send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv to share with our community! Happy sewing!
Inspirational. Thank you for sharing your sewing skills. I sewed years ago and now taking it up again. I won't be as fast as you but l will give it a go.
Makes me want to get the machine out right now. Excellent job. Now make the batting & quilting process look as easy and fast and I will stop, drop and start sewing again. Beautiful job & beautiful person doing the teaching. Bravo!
soooooooo I made one and am on my 2nd. My only input is, while the actual sewing of the top took an hour (i have 9 kids and am 7 months pregnant with 10th) the preparing took hours. I don't have the funds to buy jelly rolls, so i made my own strips. That took a lot of time. BUT WORTH IT. i plan on making more! Thanks so much
Shane Winters Busy mom of seven and grandmother of two here. I feel your time crunch. This is an awesome way to finish a fast quilt. If you want to make it faster, consider making your own jelly roll out of the strips and making a quilt as you go quilt one row at a time from the top. It's SO much faster!
Once you get used to cutting strips you'll be stacking yardage and cutting them 2, 4, 6 at a time. The trick is in prepping the yardage by pressing out big wrinkles and folding it with the selvages together with a straight grain. Once you get that sorted out you'll be cutting really quickly. Jordan Fabrics channel has a good tutorial on cutting (lots of other channels too) and they have a great trick for long rulers. Use a 5# hand weight on the far end of the ruler to hold it down for you. No slippage.
Congratulations on baby #10! I had 13. Could you tell me how long you made the initial strip? I guess I could do the math and divide by 16 or 32 or whatever. I am just lazy.
This is fabulous. I'm starting to learn more about what to do with my scraps. I love the way you stitched the strips together with varying fabric strips. It certainly made an interesting quilt. Thank you so much. You've gained a fan.
I just started doing this. I like the idea of just sewing things together and not following a pattern. Different is good I feel. This will be my first quilt and yes, it is fun so far. Thanks for sharing this!
Thank you, Zanet. We would love to see your quilt, please send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv to share with our community! Happy sewing!
This turned out beautiful, but there's no way I can do it as fast as you can. Plus my machine is old. Loved watching you make this, thanks for sharing your skill!!!
For quilting, you only need a machine that sews a straight line of 1/4 inch. My machine doesn't have all the fancy stuff on it. You can go to a thrift store or 2nd hand store and pick a machine that may be a few years old but hasn't been used! They usually are under $50.00. Pick machines that doesn't have scratches on the bed, wear on the knobs and a clean (no lint) in the bobbin case, which is under the foot. You may be very surprised at the quality machine you find. Good luck on your quilting! Elenore Burns, Quilt in a day is great for beginners to understand how to put patchwork blocks together fast and simply. Look too under, Quilt in a Day. Lots of neat patterns that will look fabulous. The hardest thing in quilting is blending colors and finding contrast in your fabric. Its great fun, and a Super adventure!!! HAPPY QUILTING!
loved your idea Valerie, I also had a large bag of 2.5" strips so I got the bag out and started sewing - seemed to go on forever. When I had finished I realised I had just stitched together 56metres of strips, took for ever to join them but in the end it turned out great and now my bag is empty. Thank you for the super video. Sylvia from the Wilds of Africa
Hi Sylvia, glad you enjoyed our video, I'm sure it looks amazing! Can you please send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv to share with our community? Thank you! Happy sewing!
Loved your scraps! If this quilt used up all your scraps, then I admire you greatly. I have at least two bins of scraps I need to cut into useable pieces. Not sure I have many long pieces, but am going to look for them when I get around to cutting them. I have an AccuQuilt cutter which should make cutting them much easier, since I have arthritis in my shoulders and hands. I look forward to trying this quilt when I have enough long pieces. Thanks for the tutorial. I look forward to seeing more of your tutorials.
Beginner here and this looked so loony until it started making sense and coming together. This will probably be how my first quilt comes together. Lovely.
I second CeeTee's comment. I can also see borrowing and cutting off 21/2 in to 5 inch strips to use with various triangular or 45/60 degree rulers for another complex quilt look. I can see two separate quilts out of this pieced strip quilt top that was just made. I have lots of left over binding strips stashed that I would just join and use as the binding on smaller quilts. Now I can just make the longest jelly roll there ever was and go for the strip pieced top. Thanks for the idea.
I really enjoyed watching you put this scrappy quilt together I’ve only been quilting about 6 months my very first quilt was made from scraps leftover from my mask making during the pandemic I will be trying this one scrappy quilts are what I enjoy making. Thank you for sharing…🦋🦋🦋
Oh, my goodness! What an awesome video. The music is just right, the quilt is magnificent. I love the fact you can accomplish a beautiful quilt in one day practically. Some people, like me, lose focus very easily, still working on that and I do not finish the quilt I begin. But, this method will help me so much. Thank you for sharing!
Finally a quilt that is not ugly :P I really appreciate that you choose a color scheme and stuck to it, most quilt pattern are like 'use whatever you have leftover and make it into a fun quilt' but it's not fun it's just butt ugly lol
HOW AMAZING! AND I LOVE YOUR COLOURS! AT 67 I AM A VERY ADVANCED HAND SEAMSTRESS AND HAVE ALWAYS LONGED FOR A SEWING MACHINE. I ALWAYS THINK SOMEDAY I WILL FIND ONE BY THE ROADSIDE AND I WILL BE RUNNING STICHES QUICKLY. THANK YOU FOR THIS FUN TUTORIAL. ☺
Several of us quilters at All Day Sew have been making these clever quilts - sometimes for a back of a quilt! Yes, we love them! Thanks for great idea!
I am a newbie. So new that I am intimidated by a lot of the squares and blocks. But, I just made my grandson a quilt using this technique. I LOVE IT!!!! I love the random look of the final project. I admit that the extremely long strip was a bit challenging and thought "this was a bad idea" when I saw how much fabric was puddled on the floor, but it came together nicely. This may very well be my favorite technique that I have used (not that there have been many). Thanks so much.
Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! I am just starting my very first Quilt and that was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for your generous share of your talent. Your Quilt came out gorgeous. I love the colors so much.
Hi! Thank you! Please send us a picture of your first quilt at pictures@justhands-on.tv and we'll pop it on our popular 'Show and tell' page. Happy sewing!
Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I am trying it now. By the way, it won't matter if you do twist it when you sew the strips together as you can cut the 'loop' when you reach the end. :)
That is great! Even though the cutting of the scraps will take more time of course, this has finally made me think that one day I could actually make a quilt!
for a beginner at doing patchwork/quilting( but hopefully not new to sewing) it's better to think that all you do it sew one piece together with an other at any given time. you might sew a lot of pieces together in the end but you do that by sewing just one piece to the other piece, just one step at a time. Im not the kind that do well with sewing that needs to be perfect in every stitch. there is a lot of quilts that arent hard at all.
I was so inspired by your video that I immediately went to my stash and took the day and created my own quilt exactly as you did I love the outcome and will be making many more what a great idea
10 years later and this is still inspiring people!!! Thank you!!!

I’m purchasing my fabric now to make this quilts. You make it look so easy. So at 59 years young I’m going to attempt to make my first quilt ever.
Lovely! I am planing to do a scrap quilt with 40 years of scraps! quilt'em or toss'em! Thanks for the ideas!

And the denim is heavy enough to double as a weighted blanket sometimes!
How did it go?
I might try this, too... I like to use old jeans for fabric, lol, so I can recycle them!
Used this method using 6" strips from a fabric sample catalog (probably from the 90"s) adding jean fabric, a sheet, & a summer dress. This has been a fun project watching how all rectangles came together during my quarantining. Thanks for sharing!

Actually its just one long strip at first by sewing around 30 strips together.
How long is the first strip?
If the poster above you is correct and the first very long strip is 30 pieces long ( I think Jellyroll strips are 40"), it looks like she ended up with about a twin size quilt top.

I've been promising myself to make a quilt for years. Thanks to you I can now keep my promise!! Thank you so much for sharing with us.
Love how this design ends up the right size for however much fabric you have. No need to measure or buy extra.

i LOVE this video. i wish everybody made quilting videos this way. thank you SO much for posting this video.
I was always fearful to make a quilt..... You inspired me to make one with no fear and use my scraps of fabric! Thank you, thank you so much!
Great video!! The scraps are more interesting than a jelly roll! But I DO love a jelly roll! This is a great option!!
I simply LOVE this idea. Have now made 2 quilts this way and have 2 very happy friends 😊. Thank you Valerie 👍🏻
I love the way the colours come together
I have just followed your lead my very first jelly roll quilt ...I am thrilled with the result and not a bit stressed....thank you

Woww we, that is BEAUTIFUL. The only time consuming is putting the strips together and that's not really a problem. THANKS, I LOVE it
Really smart idea for scraps, but also for any purchased strips. Thanks for the lovely video.
It’s pretty because your scraps were pretty. I think no matter what pattern, it all depends on the fabric choices as to how pretty it comes out. This is one of the nicest I’ve seen.
i never sewed a stitch till christmas this last year, thanks so much for the tutorials !
Beautiful, never done quilting but after watching you can’t wait to give it a go.
Thank you for sharing. I love this idea of sewing the strips at 45°
I bought a jelly roll forever ago and had no clue what to do with it. Now I have an idea. Thank you for posting this video. You looked like you were having a lot of fun.
Amazing, I need 40 minutes just to stare at the colorful fabrics!
Hahahaha! You're in very good company MyChilepepper :)
I can't wait to try this because I save all of my scrap's and I am looking forward in trying this myself. Thank you for a great looking quilt and sharing your ideals. Lovely
this is awesome! My Grammie has a ton of unused scraps from her quilts, I can finally give it a go!
Thank you!
This has to be the coolest thing I have seen today! How awesome is that!
really fun! I did one with a precut jelly roll a few years ago, but today I watched again as I am doing a scrap quilt using this technique
That's great! If you would like, send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv, to share with our community!
Makes me want to get the machine out right now. Excellent job. Now make the batting & quilting process look as easy and fast and I will stop, drop and start sewing again. Beautiful job & beautiful person doing the teaching. Bravo!
Wow as a beginner that looks absolutely incredible...
Genius idea to sew strips together quickly. Great way to start for blocks. Beauty in random.
soooooooo I made one and am on my 2nd. Thanks so much
I agree, it was so worth it. Were you super excited to see the result? I am in love with this technique. 👏🏾 to us for completing it.
Shane Winters. If I could hit laugh emoji... 9 kids!! I'd be happy just to grab a shower once a day!! Good luck.
You've gained a fan.
that is breath takingly beautiful! Purple is my favorite color :D
Turned out great. Now I'm inspired....thanks Valerie
Glad you enjoyed it. You can email a picture of it to us at pictures@justhands-on.tv, to pop it on site, on our popular Show and Tell category.
Love this...making a quilt has always felt intimidating but now seeing this I feel like I can go give it a try... thank you!!
I love this and the pattern turned out beautiful I have lots of scraps I can do this with and make some quilts thank you for sharing
You are delightful. I feel very at home watching you. Thank you for your tutorials and beautiful smile.
Thank you!
It’s gorgeous! Love the colors
I was looking for a simple pattern to make with a lot of different colors. This is it! Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful! Happy sewing!
I would take that and make it into a roman shade for a small window.
Just beautiful!!💖💖💖💖
Hi! What a great idea! ;)
Thank you very much for the kind words, Linda. Happy sewing!
I would think the longer the strip, the bigger the quit top would be? Love how the colors blend in. Ty for sharing
I'm visiting for the 1st time & I am so happy I took the time. WoW!!
This is like a jelly roll race. They are such fun to make.
Wonderful! Please give it a go, scrappy quilts are so much fun! Thank you! Happy sewing!
I love it!!! And oh my goodness those purples! A girl could swoon!
Your quilt top looks amazing. Can't wait to try it. Hubby will be getting his own food today !!!!
Loved the idea. Will try it. Have lots of scrapes and lots of grandchildren. It will be fun for all. Thanks for sharing.
That turned out SOO pretty! I LOVE the colors.💜
Finally a quilt that is not ugly :P I really appreciate that you choose a color scheme and stuck to it, most quilt pattern are like 'use whatever you have leftover and make it into a fun quilt' but it's not fun it's just butt ugly lol
I did enjoy it and now I have the courage to make my own ! Thanks for sharing .
Such a fab and easy idea to get rid of scraps! Everyone is getting one of these for birthdays/christmas
Thanks for sharing this. I've done this technique years ago and it is really fun. You have inspired me to do it again! Thanks for you inspiration.

Ingenious!!! I love the concept! Applause,Applause! 👏🏾
Wow! So cleverly done! Ingenious!
Several of us quilters at All Day Sew have been making these clever quilts - sometimes for a back of a quilt! Yes, we love them! Thanks for great idea!
I love it! You have such a sweet voice and are so easy to follow! Im going to try this for sure!!!
Oh my goodness! So much fun to watch and see the end product - and I'm not even a quilter! TFS this great idea.
Wow! This is my kind of quilting!!! I like simple projects to sew. thank you 🙂❤️
I am a newbie.
It's beautiful and it's fun and I love your personality. Thanks for sharing
Loved it thankyou
This is fun! Less intimidated about sewing and going to use the word cavalier! Love it!😃
Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!
I'll need to watch it again. That is so great! I'm like the little engine that could! I think I can...I know I can.
Wow! This looks like it is going to be so much fun! I've got lots of scraps and this shows how beautiful they can be! Thank you so much!
Thank you! Give it a go and have fun! Happy sewing!
Oh WOW❣️😛👍🏼🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Merci pour le partage🙏
Wow all those scarps are beautifull!! love the colors!!
Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I am trying it now. By the way, it won't matter if you do twist it when you sew the strips together as you can cut the 'loop' when you reach the end. :)
Absolute Fun To Watch & More Fun To Come...When I, Too, Can Say, "Look I Am Done"...With This Beautiful Quilt ~ Thanks To "You!"
Beautiful! I love the idea. I might just follow suit since I have a ton of scraps. I love the colors you choose they compliment each other.
Thank you! Go, go, go! And please send us a picture of the result at pictures@justhands-on.tv to share with our community! Happy sewing!
That is great! Even though the cutting of the scraps will take more time of course, this has finally made me think that one day I could actually make a quilt!
You make it look so easy! Wish you were my teacher!
rsimmone
That is a super idea! I can see using shorter strips to create smaller blocks!
Great idea! Happy sewing!
Now, an ingenious idea.. I'm not a quilter... but, I can see one in my future, using the technique.
for a beginner at doing patchwork/quilting( but hopefully not new to sewing) it's better to think that all you do it sew one piece together with an other at any given time. you might sew a lot of pieces together in the end but you do that by sewing just one piece to the other piece, just one step at a time. Im not the kind that do well with sewing that needs to be perfect in every stitch. there is a lot of quilts that arent hard at all.
I was so inspired by your video that I immediately went to my stash and took the day and created my own quilt exactly as you did I love the outcome and will be making many more what a great idea
