The three string banjo like instrument is a Shamisen, but it's not a regular shamisen. It is a type called a Futo-zao (fat-rod) Shamisen (or Jamisen) which has a thicker neck and a robust body. And the play style isn't regular style either. That style is Tsugaru Shamisen (or Jamisen) which is much faster and wilder and brutal. Recently, a Futo-zao adjusted for Tsugaru Shamisen style is called also a Tsugaru Shamisen, a bit confusing but it is still a Futo-zao fixed up for Tsugaru Shamisen.
Tsugaru is a region in the northern tip of the main island of Japan. The play style was created by a group of blind travelling musicians, and developed there.
BTW, unless you give technical explanations at the moment, you'd better not pause the music frequently especially not in the middle of solos. Try to find the right moment to pause.
