▼▼▼ Below is the background story on "Carousel Ride" ▼▼▼
"Apparently due to new-ish safety standards, most playgrounds today don't have merry-go-rounds, monkey bars, or seesaws. I made this sad discovery recently in search of a seesaw for a photoshoot. THERE ARE NO SEESAWS IN NEW YORK CITY. When I was 16 I was a summer camp counselor in Lambertville, NJ. I used to play a game with the kids where you spin the merry-go-round as fast as you can and jump off while it was at full speed and try not to fall down. Oh the thrill. The confidence building! The hand-eye cognitive development in real-time as children hurdled off the spinning metal machinery!
That summer, after work I would often smoke weed and play trumpet along to Miles Davis recordings. His inflection and use of space sent chills down my spine. And each era of Miles had whole new palettes. He never stayed in one place musically. Other times after work, my friend (a fellow counselor) and I would go into my dad's basement and take bottles from his wine collection hoping he wouldn't notice. I was always grounded and not allowed to go out at night. So at 1 in the afternoon we'd guzzle the 20 yr old sediment-filled red wine and walk around town getting into trouble. I'd get back in time to take a nap and sober up before my dad got home from work. We did this until we got caught and really fucked up my dad's wine collection. This was the start of a life pattern of working hard and playing harder. A friend of mine in Brooklyn calls this the "carousel ride: you pay the piper to go for a spin then you gotta get off and walk straight" and it's pretty much been my M.O. for half my life. But a year ago around when Kal got sick, I decided to quit drinking. I couldn't walk straight enough and I was falling down a lot (literally and metaphorically). When I stopped covering things up a lot of emotions (and sounds) came out. This song is one of them. I feel really lucky to have music, this band, and all of you in my life. Thanks for listening, Love you!"
