The thing that pissed me off about "Tell Them You Love Me" is that they gave as much credence to the CRIMINAL as they did to the family. On episode one of the series I said out loud "Oh nahh this b!tch did somethin..." but the doc is so focused on portraying "both sides" that by the end they're trying to make you feel bad for HER because now she can't get a job. I had to google more about it to discover that Derek was in DIAPERS that she had to remove to assault him multiple times. Sister, eughhhhh. She a FAN who needa stay her ass inside (prison).

Not only that, but assisted communication in regards to holding someone's hand to guide them on a communication device is not something that pretty much any institution in the US allows nowadays. I work with disabled people (physical and intellectual of a wide variety and all ages) and that's something that you outright could be fired for if you did at any of the programs I worked with because it can be so exploitable. You can do hand over hand for activities (coloring or cooking or whatever) but NEVER core communication.
There are other communication devices that could've worked for Derrick. I had a client at my previous day program who was also physically unsteady, so she had a device that scrolled through different words and said them quietly off of a speaker right next to her ear, and when she heard a word she wanted to use she hit a big red button and it would say the word louder for the people around her to hear. She had hundreds of words to express things and she only needed to hit a big red button with any part of her body to speak. This lady just has no clue what the resources actually are and yet she poses herself (and the documentary poses her) like she's an incredibly informed person and she just isn't.

Even though what she did was unfathomably vile (so vile I'm not sure I can make it through this review tbh) I kinda appreciate that they let her incriminate herself so much. Saying she and Derrick had these lavish and extensive conversations when he just didn't have those capabilities. They allowed her to out herself.

I had this exact same issue with it!! They gave the criminal too much of a voice to the point that she could try to gaslight people into thinking what she did was acceptable. I’ll never understand how the fuck she managed to be let off. The system fucking failed him so badly.

I am shaking with rage that this happened. She “fell in love” with an idealized version of HERSELF that she projected onto Derek after doing whatever she could to claw what existing identity he had away from him…that is in at least the top three most awful crimes that I have heard of this nature.

I have a sibling who is disabled and non-verbal and I cannot overstate how easy it can be to exploit parents who just want the best for their disabled children. My parents fell for the false hope peddled by quacks and snake oil salesmen more than once. The only good thing that came from it was that I grew up to be a total skeptic and have since helped others to see these predators for what they are.

    • @anathemat-002
      @anathemat-002 6 месяцев назад

I can't tell you how many parents I've seen via the clients at my programs for disabled individuals who are struggling so much harder than they have to be because some trash human sold them on the idea of an MLM (pyramid scheme) being the way they're going to be able to provide for their kid, or alternatively, suddenly have the products to "fix" them (Herbal Life and Doterra and other products that make illegal medical claims are so bad about this and it's so horrid because so many of the product cause outright harm, especially to individuals who are sensitive to so many of these things that you and I might brush off and be fine with).

    • @WdawgSmith

Yeah this is going to sound sort of like less important because I don’t have any learning disabilities But I tried that TMS treatment for depression Where they attach electrodes to the outside of your head and it just does something every 60 seconds for an hour And you do like 24 sessions It’s NOT like electro shock therapy at all But basically at the end I was like “I feel no different” and they were like well it takes some belief that it worked And I was like okay someone needs to shut this down now That’s called a placebo effect Now apparently they have tons of data and tons of happy patients but I fear it’s just a lot of people who believed so hard that they were able to convince themselves, and therefore made the depression better Which is a placebo effect But I did very well in school I’m more intelligent than the average person And I’m very introspective So I think it was going to take actual changes to cure or help my depression And they told me it does not provide “actual changes” I was like how did you guys con the government or whatever to allow this.
It does seem like it could work because it’s quite involved And when I heard that it would involve electrodes and I would actually feel small sensations during the session Of course I was like “hmm Maybe this can work”
But no it’s just BS I mean if it worked we really wouldn’t need 300 different anti depressants
10% of people over 65 have Alzheimer’s and we dedicate so much money and time and research to making the 301st anti depressant It’s ridiculous
They should be forced to come up with a good treatment for Alzheimer’s before continuing with anti depressant research. There are enough of them.
Also the fact that they advertise pharmaceuticals on TV is a whole other issue. We, as consumers, can not purchase them. So they should be disallowed. Show the presentations to doctors but the fact that our TV is plastered with medications that a person cannot buy on their own should tell us how corrupt the pharmaceutical industry is right now.
Only gonna get much worse in November when our new president hires his friend the con man (pick one) to head up the FDA

@@WdawgSmithI can agree with you on everything, but stopping any depression research in favor of really anything is not it. Neurological research can’t just be traded around. For simplicity’s sake; if there’s researchers versed in depression they’re not gonna do well researching Alzheimer’s, these people and tests cants just be swapped over to another brain issue. Also, I’m pretty sure the people that have depression make up more of the population than 10% of people over 65, which doesn’t denote importance but it DOES require urgency that stopping testing will not provide. Everything else you’ve said tho, again, I completely agree

      @@WdawgSmith
i understand why a placebo affect technique may seem like a scam but i disagree that it should be stopped.
the brain is a really powerful thing and in a lot of cases placebo affects are prioritised as a treatment because they’re a version of treatment that has absolutely no side affects and so no one get hurt. i know it may feel more comfortable to have a purely medical treatment but messing with the body when there’s an option not to only ever leads to side affects that people don’t want or need. medicine can cause allergic reactions, emotional dysfunction, lack of proper hormone production, and worse case scenario the patient could die so from that perspective a treatment where the patient is tricked into essentially healing themselves is the best case.
these treatments are also used more commonly than people think. examples of placebo effect treatment include pain medication which is often replace with sweets for children so that the brain will lessen the pain by itself (unless it’s something serious). i’ve even heard that certain types of depression medication were found to be useless as a hormone that had previously thought to be connected to depression was found to not have that connection, so the only resulting treatment was due to placebo. this is helpful because too much hormone medication can actually lead to that hormone no longer being naturally produced and so the person becomes reliant on treatment. placebo obviously doesn’t do this.
fun fact: there’s a type of seizures that are essentially the result of the brain going into a highly stressful/traumatic mode and deciding to force the body into a seizure (these are often found with people who have seen epileptic seizures consistently in their life through a relative/friend with epilepsy). the only found treatment for this was hypnotism (i believe this was founded with freud) as it is a purely cognitive issue with no biological reasoning (while epilepsy has biological components and so can be controlled somewhat). unfortunately this practice was banned as doctors are not allowed to lie to their patients. so patients who experience this are essentially told that they have to go home and hope it doesn’t happen again (though i believe knowing that it’s all in your head does a lot to help stop it). idk if this has been changed in recent years as the book i first read about this in was from the 80’s (i think?) but it’s interesting nonetheless.
i’ve only skimmed through your comment so excuse me if i misrepresent any anything. i’m sorry if i ranted lol.
tl;dr : placebo treatments are actually quite affective and are often the best treatment possible.
EDIT: i reread your comment and i just wanted to say a few more things (sorry).
      1) neuroscience research into forgetting is REALLY complicated so it isn’t very easy to do research into cures. the main reason (at least from what i’ve read, i’m not an expert) is because we have very little knowledge into how memory works and which areas of the brain are involved. there are general ideas of how memory works (e.g. the working memory model) but attempting to link this to an area more specific than just the hippocampus for example (if you want more info look up “HM case study”) is hard to pinpoint. it’s even hard to try and “fix” them. depression is mainly a hormone based illness which is significantly easier to directly fix as it has less to do with brain areas and more about hormone deficiency which is easily changed through chemicals in drugs (like SSRIs that encourage reuptake of serotonin).
      2) banning those type of ads is mainly an american issue from what i’ve seen of other countries. i know where i live (england) nobody tries to advertise drugs to people directly, most likely because we have free healthcare so we get free/cheap drugs most of the time anyway.
sorry if this came off as preachy, i’m just very passionate about neuroscience as i want to do it for a degree :)))

In reference to the third doc, my son is highly impacted by autism and has an AAC. It’s an iPad (but any tablet can be used) that has a software (in our case proloquo2go) to help communicate. My son is partially verbally, but we still encourage him to use it when overwhelmed or has trouble finding the words to express himself. It’s a great tool for kids to have and the school I work at (which is focused on being inclusive towards neurodivergent kids) has MANY kids that use an AAC to communicate. I’ve never seen facilitated communication because much like the studies found, I feel like the person helping could heavily influence the person/child as to what to type. As far as my son and the kids I work with, I’ve seen their communication skills grow with using an AAC. I’ve even been surprised with the things my son has typed on his own and the way he finds similar words to get his needs met or to request things.

autism is very much a spectrum disorder so no one can 100% compare but as a part time nonverbal i am forced to spend a lot of time in my own head so reading and watching others to learn new things. there is the one third who develops a comorbid intellectual disability that i definitely cant speak for since i dont have one. and everyone develops differently with being autistic (its not all just savants or ..the slur. yknow.) but i can definitely believe he would learn ways kinda overcompensate the ability to communicate i was young before these accessibility systems were starting to grow so i mostly learned to really facial expression and use traditional writing.

@@onyxtelfer3070 Seconding (thirding?) this. The weird version, "facilitated communication" (that was most likely wishful thinking) had "facilitators" claiming that by holding a non-communicative person by the elbow they could suddenly type words out on a paper keyboard, but only when certain people with highly specialized training were the ones holding it for them.
That doesn't have much in common with modern AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices, where people who have difficulty communicating in verbal English but are actively trying to communicate can point to, touch, or hand over cards that contain clear symbols, and/or apps that allow the person to independently work out what they want to say ahead of time and then trigger it themselves at the appropriate moment.
Those are undisputedly awesome, work incredibly well, and are good for everything from speech disorders to sign language beginners to language barriers to just being in a loud place and needing to communicate a simple idea.
As someone with above-average verbal skills, I installed an AAC app on my phone solely to help a relative with stress-related mutism but since then I've discovered its been a great tool for me, too. You never know when being able to rapidly display the international symbol for "bathroom" next to a question mark without having to say a word is going to come in clutch!
tl;dr - Modern AAC/Talking Boards aren't what was in that documentary. They're something different and much cooler, and you should consider getting a free one for your phone just in case.

Facilitated communication was featured in Angie Kim's novel, "Happiness Falls". It's a great book. There's a scene where the main character has flashbacks of this communication therapy her little brother -- who has Angelman Syndrome. After their dad tried to get the therapist to replicate these fantastic communication results without guidance, the therapist is outed as a fake and she's fired. The scene gives a lot of context surrounding the dynamics of the family, especially between the mom and the dad (which becomes relevant when the dad goes missing, yada yada). I recommend you read the book, it's very good.

Regarding Derrick being nonverbal and the abuse of supposed language therapy, my younger brother had severe autism and was nonverbal and we tried for decades to find some means of communication but beyond some very simple commands he never spoke. Around the same time was the famous Koko the gorilla experiments and eventually we would find those experiments were also falsified and biased because Koko's main caretaker seemed to be the only one to illicit any statements from her (also, she also had a weird sexual thing claiming Koko wanted to see other women's breasts?). Other experiments like Nim Chimpsky debunked this idea of elevated speech in these animals: while they may give commands wanting something, these were purely utilitarian and never was there anything like expressing observations or empathizing with their handler, no one was having casual conversation and the only thing would be simple task-reward statements like saying "want orange" would result in getting food.
    Just like my brother.
While he expressed things like happiness, frustration, and while he would say "I want soda" he would never just talk or even *say* what he was feeling (he would hollar when happy, scream when angry). These studies with animals discuss that non-utilitarian conversation really seems to be a unique trait of humans and our signature form of socialization. Others don't have that function and in people like my brother and possibly Derrick while they have still have that higher function of thinking they lack the ability to be advanced in their expression, a developmental disfunction. My brother may have had thoughts, he loved certain shows and food and places to visit, but he lacked any motivation to say anything other than "I want this".
I think it's a fascinating explain of neuroscience and and speech therapy, but it also sickens me to see those who exploit these people just as they're were snake oil salesmen who offered false hope to my family. I wish only the best for this man and his family

Here’s an idea, how about, “I watched 4 movies that everyone loved, and I hated”. One movie I think you would hate that was recent, is furiosa, the action is good and story is excellent, but the last 20 ish minutes is filled with cuts of a great battle that you don’t see, a voice over, and unsatisfied ending

I went to see Furiosa for my birthday. It was so awful. Just absolutely awful.

CONGRATS ON 1 MIL. Mama’s balloons were on point.
If anyone is interested in the story of mostly harmless but doesn’t want to watch a doc full of people who were weirdly obsessed with this man, the RUclips channel Kyle hates hiking has a great video about it.
