  • Iv heard a lot of people talking about the TDM 850's using oil and the possible causes, in this video im changing the final drive seal because of a possible cockup by yamaha, apparently they fitted a lot of these drive seals with the tangs in the wrong place blocking the oil feed channels and causing a build up of pressure, the result is a fine mist of oil spraying out from that seal! so im changing my drive seal as a precautionary measure.

    Top tip…before you remove the seal, make a note of where the part number of the seal is. That way, even if it pops out unexpectedly, you can still line it up and see if the tangs were obstructing the oilways.

      Thanks Roy, its a great bit of kit, deffo worth having and safer than a few other techniques iv seen on youtube, the bike isnt ready yet im afraid, still a fair bit to do, what started to be a light resto project has now tuned into a small obsession!

    Hi. I lent my TDM to my brother and he bought it home with a leak from there and a oily left boot. He is going to buy me a new seal and using this video, I’m going to fit it. Do you have a part number handy?
    Thanks for this.

    the original seal has shorter tangs, the new one has slightly longer tangs. Good work.

      Is it impossible to buy the old type of seal with the shorter tangs now (2022)?

      @@theglumrant9477 That i do not know but if you were to ask a Yamaha dealer to order a new seal using the old part number then i would imagine it would automatically supersede to the new part number. You using or losing engine oil?

      @@wicklamulla Thanks, I've just ordered one from Fowlers (£10.90).I don't know which one it'll be but it definitely does NOT have the original part number

      @@theglumrant9477 it may be worth comparing the two side by side when it turns up. I did this years ago and took some measurements as they were quite different tang lengths. It didn't cure my oil consumption though!

      @@wicklamulla I've never had a problem with oil consumption...still waiting for it, checking the level regularly but it never seems to disappear like everyone says it will. A great bike, what's not to like?

      Did it actually reduce oil consumption?

    • @wicklamulla
      @wicklamulla 4 года назад

      @@CrowleyNL possibly but i doubt it very much as some people (me included) replaced the seal with the newer type with the longer tangs only to initially think there was a reduction in oil consumption and in reality it was down to 'a placebo effect'. Oil consumption is usually the valve stem seals or glazed bores.
