My first language is french and even I struggle to follow this crazy fever dream.
I spent the whole time thinking "this would be so much worse if I understood French"
@@brennyn believe me it is
@@brennyn It's the same ambiance as the old annoying american Sonic cartoon.
DKTV walked so The Grey Leno Show could run.
Alright so the reason all of this feels like such a fever dream is that in order to make sense of it you need to understand like 4 different layers of 90s french pop culture. Here's rough context for people who care:
1. A LOT of these skits are very clearly repackaged humour from french comedy group Les Nuls, which was very popular in the late 80s/early 90s. They were well known for their commercial parodies, TV show parodies, film parodies, etc. basically making fun of TV on TV. 11:34 to 14:00 is the perfect example of that, a skit about Buffy ("Bouffi" means swollen, hence the thighs), two joke commercials, and a parody of The Count of Monte Cristo. These are sprinkled on top of the regular kid's show stuff (songs etc) and make the whole thing a LOT more surreal.
2. Following the last point, you basically need to have the context of whatever commercials were airing in 90s France, otherwise nothing makes sense until maybe you see the logo of whatever it's a spoof of. Same thing with the song parodies.
3. French voice acting culture from the 80s-90s is a whole thing. The best way to explain for international audiences would be, if you think about the infamous english dub of Ghost Stories you'll have a pretty good idea of what the vibe of this show is. e.g. at 18:29 the rough translation of what she says would be "and also, it pisses me off that I look like a fat b*tch"
4. That's the easiest one, most people already know this: for a long time, children's TV was a business focused on making as much money as possible while spending as little as possible. A good example of that would be the old G.I. Joe cartoons, notoriously poorly animated since they were cheaply and quickly produced to sell toys.
Having a pretty good grasp on all of this, I'm willing to bet that this whole thing is the result of France Télévisions realising they could license/buy DK models for cheap, giving them to a small team of 3D animators and VAs and saying "you have these characters and access to two channels' worth of stock footage - do whatever so we can put it between cartoons". And they did whatever.
As for the whole copyright thing I'm pretty confident they had it sorted. This is national TV in a first world country, it's not unusual for them to be able to use the Beatles or Star Wars or whatever else
Its so weird that vinny thinks this had copyright/licensing issues in any way 😅
I once spoke to an american that couldn't believe big american hits were being licensed to small third world country radios. Was that any similar to this?
I like to imagine this is what all the French watched every saturday evening.
"Sacre bleu I cannot wait for ze donkey kong night live"
"Hon hon hon, le Donkey Kong, c'est magnifique!"
@@i_teleported_bread7404 "Respectueusement Kong."
olala j'aime me noyer dans le vin en regardant DKTV! j'ouvre les coquilles d'escargots avec mes fesses tout en lèchant des cuisses de grenouille
File this under “streams I fell asleep to midway through, woke up and still wasn’t convinced I was awake”
imagine if you watched it on a big screen tv
13:41 is where that one gif of Donkey Kong decking Funky's lights out comes from
The French have a great taste in television
I mean they did make Wakfu 👀
Tow words: Family Guy.
Just with that alone, Americans have no rights criticizing anyone's tastes.
@@na-ky8ouAw come on frenchie, lighten up :)
@@scrung Seems like I'm brighter than your RUclips career.
@@na-ky8ou three words: my life me
I want to say that DKTV is more of a show that hosts cartoons and other series mostly geared towards late kids and adolescents and we're seeing a lot of the stuff that's in between shows.
I've actually seen a bit of DKTV back then, unfortunately I don't remember much of it. However the french humor here is very much representative of how it was in the late 90s and early 00s. It was crazy, and a lot of it has aged very badly. A lot of this are parodying commercials and pop culture, especially french culture, and popular series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Casper and more. It would be very very hard to explain the humor of everything (especially when I lack some of the context myself for some of these too).
This aired from 1996 to 2001. It would be an understatement to say that it is huge how a video game character such as Donkey Kong would be on public french TV every morning to host popular series and cartoons. Nowadays, I can definitely tell you that would never happen again unless the times change.
This sounds like something the weird kid would make up on the playground.
"Yeah, i visited my cousin in France, and they have this show with Donkey Kong and zombies, and he gets drunk, and it's super crazy."
I'm surprised none of this stuff has been turned into prime YTP fodder at this point.
Do people even make French ytps?
I know Japan actually invented them, they're called MADs over there
@@CassiusStelar we do in fact, have a big ytp tradition with people like "Père Doriot" or "EnfluredeRenard". But I never saw this DK Show used before
@@CassiusStelar
The Dada movement of the 1920s which popularized contemporary remix culture predates even the earliest MADs along with the Warner Brothers cartoon "Daffy Duck in Hollywood" made in 1938, where he edits a film reel for gags.
You also have the underground movements of the 60s and 70s in America which did essentially proto-MADs before the practice crossed over the ocean to Japan. The idea of taking someone elses work has been around since we could write or paint so it's probably more accurate to call it a general hunan invention. The 80s & 90s was when the culture of the United States and Japan both brought such ideas into the new digital age along with the internet.
That has been your YTP history lesson for the day.
@@FelipeJaquez thank you for edumacating me
@@CassiusStelar Père Doriot and jefaischierlesgens, such classics
So THAT'S where that goddamn gif of DK punching Funky was from.
yeah I've been trying to find it in the wrong show this whole time...
FRANCE 2 ANNOUNCED
Donkey Kong was a VTuber.
That's nuts, I didn't know he's real
back then when VTubers were rad and not -coomer- weeb bait
9:05 JOEL SPOTTED!!
i'm french and it's N'IMPORTE QUOI
This feels like Adult Swim Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong speaking voice = Aggressively French.
Conkey Dong singing voice = Bullwinkle Moose.
Not even a full minute in, and I have to pause the video because I can't stop laughing at Tuxedo Kong.
28:20 This video format is made for foreign companies who are interested to acquire a license for distribution. styleJam did a similar move with GCCX as shown in the Cannes Festival special episode.
lmao kinda sad there is no subtitles for vinny and chat to understand the corny humor, ah the french
Shoutouts to black haired candy kong twin who only appears in this.
It wasn't supposed to be Candy, just some random ape waifu.
I know I was saying twin for being a reused model like Eddie.
@@WilfredCthulu Sorry, I've misread your comment.
It's fine
Yeah that OC Kong was pretty cute
Its amazing that a similar level of full body tracking technology they used to record animation in realtime in professional studios can now be done with relatively inexpensive IMUs. Although finger tracking still has a ways to go ofc. Really cool to see how far we've come!!
For the last 30 years...
24:29 Bro, that's Rob Zombie - Dragula. Such a weird song choice
At the end the Mario clip killed me.😂
"This is it Luigi"
13:12 Montagues and Capulets from Romeo and Juliet, comprised by Sergei Prokofiev
I saw a making of of the animations on the show way back when, the faces were animated with hand movements, one finger moved eyebrows, one moved mouth openness, and so on.
gave the show a little bit of a soft spot for me
Can't believe I'm saying this but this looks even more chaotic then Gray Leno.
I'm not too familiar with French voice actors, but I could swear I recognize some of these voices from Wakfu/Dofus
I tried looking it up and couldn't find any overlap between the 2, still not too unlikely as our voice acting culture circles back to the same few voices lol (for instance I was shocked to see Gérard Sugude, Rubilax's VA, in a kids show from the 70s).
Also, awesome to see someone mention Wakfu here: that's my childhood and it's amazing to know it went beyond our borders!
@@JLMetak ...Unironically, rule 34 is arguably the BEST free advertising anyone can hope for to get attention for your thing... and it helps many character designs of both sexes are very visually appealing :P
But yeah, I could swear I've at least heard Diddy Kong's actress voice numerous child characters in French cartoons
This was a common format in the second half of 1990 and the early years of 2000. Many channels had this concept, with one or more characters presenting the cartoons, and between each one there were “games”, sketches, sometimes even contests (send in a drawing of such-and-such a show/character/ or related to the time of year). Sometimes, of course, the presenters weren't real (minkeum's / DKTV / Tfou...) and some shows had real presenters, like M6 with M6kid or Club Dorothée, better known because it brought us a lot of anime like Dragonball or Saint Seiya (les chevaliers du zodiacs in French). I admit I wasn't much into TV when I was young, but even so, it still gives me a little something :)
Mwaha the French Donkey Kong show...
Always celebrated for it's shittyness!
Always celebrated for its shittyness!
Ça me fait toujours bizarre de le voir react sur du français
I’m a little reminded of that local US channel’s King Koopa’s live action segments
It absolutely was our King Koopa's Kool Kartoons equivalent. From the lack of success to the poor quality
to me the craziest thing about this is how much effort they put into lip syncing DK speaking french.
Donkey Kong's voice legit just sounds like that Goober "dinty play dm beef stew" voice Vinny does (i don't know how to explain it better than that)
Like I'm not kidding it seriously does
13:21 that one's prokofiev's dance of the knights from romeo and juliet, I thought it sounded familiar too lmao
KUALA LUMPUR MENTIONED 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾 HUGE win for all 5 of us m’sian vinesauce fans ‼️
Yeee me too :)
16:57 This is the opening credits song from Groundhog Day...
these model and texture edits are really funny to me. because somebody bothered to do all this.
"Why is Nintendo so protective of their ip?"
This era of children's media was weird, voice performance felt like either the actors did not try at all or they were really good (compare, this version of DK vs the English version we actually got, he was really good despite the show)
I missed this one last night. Was wondering if Vinny was going to watch DKTV for months now.
I was not expecting to see Donkey Kong exorcizing a zombie underscored by Danny Elfman's music for The Frightners, but alas
If anyone wants to remake Gorillaz album covers and replace the characters with Donkey Kong Country show 3d models that would be pretty funny.
Huh there are a-lot of severed heads, I wonder if there is any cultural significants to this in french culture?
Ha! XD
Oh wow, I was hoping he'd see this. Great to have context for everything
12:58 WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH PET FOOD
ruclips.net/video/KND8h-FANhg/видео.html I can't believe vinny didn't notice they were clearly fuckin in the back seat of that car lmao
Basically most of that was just bad jokes/puns, except with insane things happening around them
And also Donkey Kong complimenting someone's breasts
now he just needs to see the donkey kong supercade saturday cartoon from like 83, along with the donkey kong jr cartoon.
my boss at the firm i work at is french. im emailing him the full tv show rn
Hope more of this show gets found so we can watch the insanity devolve into madness.
has vinny seen that other thing where DK goes "oh, tommy from the rugrats!"?
we need the rest of this show dug up if a lot of it is lost media
I'm shocked I've never heard of this, this is wild
Thanks RUclips for sending me a notification for this right now
Absolutely fascinating...
Thought it was Vinny’s birthday, not ours?!?!?
Thank you Vimby.
the animation looks like it's vrchat lmao
Someone has got to recreate the dkc show and port it to vrchat
Donkey Kong was a vtuber before Annoying Orange. Mr. Magic was the first vtuber, though.
29:59 Donkey Kong *bares demon teeth* EEAAUGGHHH!
That kong with the black hair is maybe Candy's friend. Also, I want Neopets have a show like this.
Dong.
Bong.
Dong Expansion.
13:59 The gormless abomination that is Baby Diddy Kong
I thought these would have subtitles at least
someone please tell where is the music on 17:22 from? it's from some tv show, but i cant remember
The song from 16:57 onwards that you're referring to is the opening credits song from Groundhog Day
i'm really nostalgic about "old donkey kong content" sounds weird af but yea the snes games, the bad cgi serie, the bad commercials with mario saying "save yourself first" the meme'd "cool bananas" and the taco bell one and that freaking thing...
on remercie aussi Dorothée pour avoir fait de nous des gros weebs.......
DKTV feels like a chaotic fever dream.
This makes the corruptions look tame.
90's French TV was insane. I miss it.
Diddy’s voice in French is genuinely adorable
Well, this is a fucking fever dream
I remember that show.
If you think about it, this was just par for the course. Cartoons were spilling out the wazoo in the 90's, and a number of host blocs were created to house the assortment of jumbled animations.
Things like Flea & Moxy... Johnny Bravo hosted a bunch including the infamous one where he put on Dragon Ball Z but had to fast forward through it... I think Space Ghost Coast to Coast did Cartoon Planet.
With better computer graphics and technology cgi animations entered the race; the reality of it being Donkey Kong and cohorts is incredible and not something you'd be able to predict years prior
Was that Ryan Gosling 1:51?
Say what you want, candy kong is SERVING in those outfits
I’m a huge fan of Commercial Chaos, and all of Vinny’s reactions to the DKC show, but oh my god, those two things combined is absolutely vile. I never want to experience this ever again.
19:22
I think that's the weirdest moment by far
25:35 english jumpscare
I dont speak french but i think that zombie office skit was a reverse zombie situation where the guy was scared because dk was a regular person that turned zombies into living people. Thats actually kinda funny lol.
Also that santa sketch straight up using nightmare before christmas music? If you did that in America disney would just straight up kill you.
Happy Birthday!
This is French modern media but from the early 90's. Or... they wanted to try to do what The Mario Super Show did.
20:19 I could have gone my whole f*cking life without seeing this.
If you want a slightly more indepth look at the show I reccomend the video on it by the channel Carlito
IF THEY HAVE THE ASSETS WHY AREN’T THEY USING KRANKY?!
