  • This 4/4 violin inspired on the Maggini model with double purfling and bird-eye maple back has a big crack on the top and a problem with the edge. Also needed a new fingerboard, pegs and bridge, and I mounted a Wittner tailpiece and a set of Fiddlerman strings. Don't forget to participate in the GiveAway!!!

    Great video. A little trick from a fellow luthier. If you take a wooden No.2 pencil you can split it right down the center. You can then use this to mark on the bridge to see where your projection height is by running the split pencil over the fingerboard surface.

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  5 лет назад

      Thank you for the tip. I have used this methode but after a wile the pencil bent (maybe form humidity? who knows) and all my bridges where to high!! Now I use a ruller to make two smal marks.

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  3 года назад

      Hello Ricky. Thank you for your kind feedback. I mostly use hide glue for the repairs. This was not a soundpost crack but a "normal" one. An soundpost crack is a crack the pases over the soundpost and under the right foot of the bridge. In that case (also depending on the value of the instrument) I would do a soundpost puch. I'm working now on a cello that will need a repair like this so you will be able to see it in some time.

    In all the string instrument videos I've see, I've never seen a luthier repair a major crack without taking the top off and bracing the crack from the back with little pieces of wood. What was your reason for not doing that with this violin. Thank you.

      @maestrokimon  5 лет назад +1

      It's hard to say how many hours as I worked on it for a week but also filmed and had to way for the glue to dry. Maybe 8 to 12 hours. The strings are good and I would recommend them.

    Is it always better to change the old hardwood fingerboard to new ebony? Does it affect the sound character?

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  5 лет назад +1

      I change them because of a couple of reasons: they don't look good and they are too soft and get worn out too soon. It affects the sound as ebony I heavier tha the wood that was used on this violin but I couldn't compare them.

    Could this violin be made by a luthier from Brescia? The two purfling was a distinctive detail of the Brescia's school...

      It is indeed a copy of the Maggini model but this instrument is much newer and not made in Italy!

      I just used sandpaper grid 2400 and water. Be careful not to damage the varnish!

    Do you have any tips on placing the sound post? It best to place before the strings are put on? I wish had a video feed to see what I'm doing.
    I'm placing the post in an instrument I've repaired.

    What kind of glue did you use to repair top? I thought the top had to be taken off and gluing had to be done from bottom surface..

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  4 года назад

      Removing the top is expensive and time consuming and not always necessary. There is no problem gluing from the outside.
