I own a Maidstone violin that is in remarkably good condition. Murdoch imported well made but inexpensive instruments from Eastern Europe (Bohemia ax it was called then) into England so that poor children could have access to the violin in schools. The Maidstone isn't a single school it's the name Murdoch gave to the Maidstone movement which was a method of teaching music to children at the time.
My son is about to receive a violin that was used by his great grandpa, it definitely needs some tender love and care... I hope O can find someone to be as gentle as you because it's very precious to me. That was a beautiful job done.
I love how you use the plastic pipette to pick up a small amount of glue to deposit in a small spot, so I have just ordered myself a pack (off ebay). A great idea instead using the brush for everything. 🙂
The violin didn’t have any corner blocks. This really indicates that it was a cheaply crafted instrument. Would adding them have made the violin more solid to prevent separation from the ribs?
Great video. A couple of questions: what polish do you endorse? And do you ever graduate the top to bring the thickness of the top to a specific dimension? Thank you. I appreciate seeing your techniques.

Thanks for showing another video of your work. I noticed you cut the belly straight across to fit the new saddle instead of staying with the curve of the bottom (where the purfling channel would otherwise follow the edge). Is that your preferred method with all instruments? Also you polished the fingerboard with steel wool & linseed oil (I presume), but what did you use to polish the body?
By hot glue I take it you mean hot horse glue? I need to make a glue pot and some clamps... Also good to see how you work the glue into the crack. Can I ask what wood the reinforcement are from?
I have noted in this and other violin repair videos that the gluing surfices are not sanded or cleaned. In this video e.g. when gluing the top on again. Is not the old glue building up? How is this handled?
Hot hide glue usually re-amalgamates. When new glue is applied, the old glue “reactivates,” which makes it ideal for any kind of repair where there could be wood fibers from the lining, for instance, still attached to the top. New hot glue goes in, and if all goes well, everything lines up perfectly. The big downside to hide glue is its frustratingly short work time.
It is a common practice to have a little spring in the bass bar, especially if the belly has sunk a little, as it adds a little compensation rather than staying with that slightly sunken shape (in a full restoration the belly is sometimes corrected for this, but it is a high risk operation really if not done properly & carefully). Obviously the bass bar shouldn't have too much spring either though. Remember the bass bar is there to support the tension of the strings on that side while the sound post supports the higher tension under the E string.

I have seen a similar violin in ebay-de with the crack exactly in the same position. Was already prepared to buy it but exceeded my max price.

@@realpeoplerun I usually warm the surfaces with a hair dryer so it doesn't gel prematurely on colder wood.
