Before "Married with Children" was aired in Polish tv, it was translated as "Ożeniony z dziećmi" ("Married with children", which could be understood as beeing married to children). Magazines with tv schedule had schedules for German tv stations available in Polish cable tv and I think Pro7 was airing "Married with Children". Similiar thing happened with the Christmas action movie "Die Hard" - it was first available as a VHS release translated to "Brutalna śmierć" ("Brutal death") and after it made to Polish theaters it was translated to "Szklana pułapka" ("Glass trap").
Glass Trap just as Hangover (Kac Vegas aka “Vegas Hangover”) is a brutal example of how inadequate the polish translation becomes when a sequel is filmed. Glass Trap 2 which makes no sense because Die Hard 2 is not filmed in a skyscraper anymore and “Vegas Hangover in Bangkok” is even more ridiculous.
@@JSmithski "Szklana pułapka 2" is not that big deal - after all one might argue, that there is a lot of glass at the airport terminal. Further movies from the franchise got it far worse, with the "Żyj wolno lub szklana pułapka" as the ultimate masterpiece ;)
@@LoveMyPoland Try this one: "Dirty Dancing" in polish translated as "Wirujący seks" (Whirling Sex). Now we can assume, that "Dirty Harry" is "Whirling Harry" :). Another cop show from the early 90's "True Blue" was translated as "Zawód Policjant" ("Proffesion: Police man") but here we have something that is hard to translate word by word. We can write a book about translations - i remember first time watching Top Gun 25+ years ago and there is a scene in the beggining when they are ordered to change altitude and the controller says "take Angels ten left three zero" which means altitude 10 thousand feet and some vector to change position. What do we heard instead in polish translation? That 10 angels are in distance of 30 :) I think they have changed this translation now, because i haven't heard it for a long time. I am not mentioning scene of landing, when LSO says "call the ball", they probably did not know how to translate it so they dropped it. Biggest problem of translators is that often they do not know how to translate some specific / branch vocabulary and using generic one instead, which often is funny :)
Przystanek Alaska został nazwany tak dlatego, że główny bohater to lekarz, którego sponsorowało miasteczko z Alaski pod warunkiem, że po skończeniu studiów będzie tam praktykował przez chyba 5 lat (nie pamiętam konkretnie jak długo). Cały pierwszy sezon był o tym, że doktor myślał, że to tylko przystanek na drodze ku wielkiej karierze w wielkim mieście (chyba Nowym Jorku), ale z czasem zaczął się łamać w tym postanowieniu... Mnie sie najbardziej podobało tłumaczenie pastiszu Szklanej pułapki czyli Die Hard, z Leslie Nielsenem na Szklanką po łapkach oryginał Spy Hard. Nawiasem mówiąc cieszy mnie, że w pewnym momencie moja znajomość z zapchajdziurami, czyli serialami telewizyjnymi się kończy, bo od lat nie oglądam tv i nie mam tego złodzieja czasu i zmiękczacza mózgu w domu.
Seriale to coś więcej niż gówno typu kiepscy. Jest masa rzeczy wartych obczajenia tylko po to nie udajesz się do polskiej tv bo ta nie ma nic do zaoferowania

@@wujekstalin1 Wcześni Kiepscy byli całkiem dobrym serialem satyrycznym, ale niestety producenci nie wiedzieli, kiedy skończyć. A przecież Amerykanie robią podobnie - zamiast zamknąć naprawdę dobrą historię w 10 -15 odcinkach, ciągną do porzygu przez kilkadziesiąt albo i więcej odcinków.
A small mistake: Texas Ranger was translated to Strażnik Teksasu z a nie Strażnik Z Teksasu, so The Guard OF Texas, not FROM Texas. Also, while it's not the most obvious one, I believe "strażnik" to be among the standard translations of "ranger" - as you probably already know, we don't have a formation similar to the Texas Rangers here. In fact, Polish Wikipedia gives "Strażnicy Teksasu" as the Polish name of the formation. Ranger Smith form Yogi Bear is also translated into Polish as strażnik Smith. I wonder if there is any better translation of the word in the context?
You can translate polish tittle "Moda na sukces" as "Fashion for success", but also as "Hunger for success". And second one is a little bit closer to polish tittle in my opinion.
Fun fact about "Miami Vice": It was translated as "Policjanci z Miami", but us, kids that grow up in the turn of 80's and 90's when this show was broadcasted on polish tv, we used to call it "Policjanci z jajami" which in free translation means... "Cops with balls" :) Still one of my favourite cop shows ever, it aged very well. The 80's mood is unreplicable but this show captured it so good, that each time i watch it it's just like time traveling.

If You're Polish, than in our language this would be equivalent to "Obyczajówka", which had similar duties. Another fun fact - but for this we'll have to ask @Love My Poland! as He is native american. "Vice" is also translated as "Imadło" in Polish. Any connection with "vice" as an activity ? Or is it the same as in polish "zamek" can be translated into "lock" as in door lock, "bolt" as a part of a firearm or "castle" as a building where Queen lives :)

Bundys! My favourite! Al is stll my idol 😂 But the Polish title is "World acording to Bundys", all Bundys not only Al. It's important because the show present stereotypes of American family in 80's. Every member of this family has own story to tell. It was amazing show and funny as hell. I love it.
I'm mildly shocked that no one has mentioned "Prison Break" being translated to "Skazany na śmierć" ("Sentenced to Death"). From old shows, there was this gem called "Quantum Leap", in Polish "Zagubiony w czasie" ("Lost in time").
Quantum Leap was great... My fave episode was the one when the protagonist found himself inside the body of childish man. You know. A guy who loved to read a comic books ( I love comic books too ), play with his nephew and the entire city was teasing of him for that... Until he saved his drowning nephew... Old good tims my dear.

Translation of "Bold and beautiful" as "Moda na sukces" is slightly more sophisticated than it looks at first glance. It's a wordplay. "Moda na sukces" should be translated back to english as "Success is in fashion".

my definite number one is a translation of the title from the 1980s, the original title was Dirty Dancing and it was translated to „Wirujący sex” (Spinning Sex ). :)))
You can do movies too. "Die Hard" translates as "Glass Trap" was an amazing example how, if you don't think ahead, you can translate yourself into a corner, as the name did not fit any of the sequel movies.
There was the episode about movie translations, and Russell even mentiones that at the beginning, please be more careful when watching. In this episode Die Hard / Szklana Pułapka was mentioned.
Russ, if you allow me - when it comes to Sex in the City or Seks w wielkim mieście - as you may know, Polish 'miasto' has two equivalents in Engllish - town and city and city is the bigger one, like, you know, Warsaw, Gdańsk, or New York :) So I think that's why the emphasis was put on the size - because of that 'city' in the original title :) And the translation of The Big Bang Theory actually does play on the double entendre of the original title, even though it's a bit more subtle - as it's a play on what a pick up often leads to (the bang, or - as Sheldon would elloquently put it - the coitus) as well as the actual Big Bang theory - which in Polish is teoria Wielkiego Wybuchu (the Big Bang is Wielki Wybuch) - so you see, the Polish translation/distribution kept that entendre as close to the point as they dared :)
I have walked into a Żabka store a few times and ordered a "Ciepły Pies", not knowing what the actual Polish term was, and received a hot dog. It could be that I am used to, in the French-speaking parts of Canada, ordering "un chien chaud", and automatically assumed the same translation.

Strażnik may also be directly translated to "Ranger", any national park ranger would be a "strażnik rezerwatu" or "strażnik parku narodowego" here, so that's almost a 1 to 1 translation to be completely honest.
I think they missed the opportunity to translate "Grey's Anatomy" as "Bochenek" (Adam Bochenek wrote the classic anatomy textbook that all Polish medical students are familiar with).

Back in the day, I used to watch a really good Polish TV series.......Its was called Residencja? set in Warsawa.....it really was good, believable characters and interesting plot lines.....I read that they cancelled it because it was too. 'Western'....didn't have any drunken village men or pigs? I suppose. Would have been a great seller around the world.
I think that Rezydencja would do well abroad, but for polish audience was weird. Too little overpatriotic zeal and they had inconsistency - they referred to some plot points several decades earlier - but there was complete change in economic and polital system in Poland so that firm could't start like this. It was good for people who don't think of history - so almoast nobody in Poland.

Warto wspomnieć serial "My name is Earl", przetłumaczony (rozsądnie) "Mam na imię Earl", nie ze względu na tytuł i jego tłumaczenie, ale na fakt, że jest to jeden z najbardziej inteligentnych, sympatycznych i zabawnych seriali, jakie zdarzyło mi się w życiu widzieć. Dodatkową zaletami jest tłumaczenie pani Olgi Dowgird i lektor - pan (już niestety świętej pamięci) Tomasz Knapik.
Słoneczny Patrol is more like Sun Patrol. Yes, słoneczny can mean sunny, but placed in context it can also mean sun. You see, a day can be słoneczny - słoneczny dzień - as in full of sunshine. A patrol can not be sunny, because a patrol does not shine.

1) 🙃 Grey's Anatomy might translate somewhat obscenely into other languages. 🙃 In France they howl with laughter at our title, because their minds are below the belt buckles. 2) Northern Exposure being filmed in Washington state is not such a shock because many exteriours here look exactly like Alaska's ones. I have been to both states, and worked up in Alaska for a few Summers. Actually, I have lived in Washington state for awhile, too, so ... 3) Sex in the (BIIIIIIG) city was also humongo-popular in Singapore and so many up-and-coming female strivers bought every single designer bag ever shown on the show, especially if Sarah Jessica Parker sported it. I liked the show for its witty voice-overs, 1st and its inimitable fashions second. 4) The Big Bang in The Big Bang Theory literally translates to ... mmmm, having very ... ummm, how can I put this? ... having very noisy and fun sex! Banging in American slang means, as you know, *F*'ing! SORRY if I just came across a bit bluntly here. 5) I like the Polish title of "Married with Children" even better than the American Title. The American title of the show relies on people understanding the very subtle nuances of American humour, because the titles jokes about how much being married with children can be so burdensome and funny because the kids are so outta control, which other cultures might not immediately understand or find funny. 6) I love Sunny Patrol, too, actually. Baywatch also is one of those titles which also would not translate well into other languages, because the words hot female lifeguards are implied, and probably not too common a sight in other places, other than in So-Cali / Southern California. Also, Baywatch easily morphs into Babe-watch which of course I still feel was not a Freudian slip, when the show's title was originally conceived. Other questions follow about the Polish titles of other shows.
4) The Big Bang Theory is connected with official physical theory (Big Bang of universe), in English the middle word (bang) is not only onomatopoeia, but slang word for coitus (BTW: it's a word taken from the show). In Polish the physical theory is called "Teoria wielkiego wybuchu" (nearly literal translation, bang is swapped to explosion), it's seems that no one noticed ambiguity of "wybuch" (explosion, outburst, eruption, detonation), so they changed it to "podryw" (pick up). This is not connected with the scientific part of the show, which is a pity. 1) Grey's Anatomy can be translated to "anatomia Bochenka" (it's name of corresponding medical book) but then they should change sex and the last name of main character.
Not a tv show, but a movie. The most wild translation I know would be Dirty Dancing. In polish version "wirujący seks". 😂 which literally means "spinning sex" lol. While it may sound strange at first I think it's actually pretty witty and reflects this movie's overall vibe. The translation is so strange most people I know don't even use it and prefer the original tho.

I think Polska ma talent would be way better. We like " The world according to Bundy" in all actuality and I'm going to have to look this up again, but I think it was going to be originally called that in the States here but for some reason. they changed it to Married with Children. In all honesty, my husband and I like " the world according to Bundy" better. Poland should find a word for Ranger, because Walker Texas Ranger really sums up the show. In the US, Texas Rangers are really an elite law enforcement organization here. Very interesting translations of the movies in different places.
Niektore anglojezyczne tytuly sa po prostu nie do przetlumaczenia na polski. Czasem na kolana rzucaja mnie tlumaczenia w grach anglojezycznych kiedy np postac nie skonczyla questa " I'm not finish yet" jest przetlumaczone na "Jeszcze nie umarlem" :D To podobnie jak powiedziano pewnemu profesorowi po wykladzie "You are finished." Tak,ze tlumaczenia na polski maja swoj urok. :D
"Świat według Kiepskich" was rather a loose inspiration rather than a direct Polish version/copy of "Married with Children". Fun fact: "Świat według Kiepskich" has had an official Ukrainian version :)
Świat wg. Bundych to było doskonałe dzieło tłumacza, same dialogi też bardzo fajnie z kontekstem przełożone. Co do radosnej twórczości naszych tłumaczy to polecam zobaczyć na filmweb jak przetłumaczono tytuł krótkometrażowego filmu pt. Snake dick z roku 2020 - jest na filmwebie ;D a film (8minutowy) można znaleźć na google xD tak, żeby znać kontekst tłumaczenia to naprawdę warto obejrzeć - sam film w żadnym wypadku nie jest dla dorosłych :D
I think "w wielkim mieście" is justified by the lack of town/city distinction in Polish. The two words do invoke very different images in English. Just think about a series called "Sex & the town". I bet your expectations would be very, very different, right? In Polish the only way to ensure that the listener thinks skyscrapers, clubs and busy sidewalks is to stress the size of the city.

„Jeopardy!” is "Va Banque". Nie wiem czy można uogólniać ale wg klipów z Yt oryginalne wersje tych teleturniejów w porównaniu z polskimi to jakieś patologiczne prostactwo spod budki z piwem; już lepiej że humor został wyodrębniony jako osobne dowcipy Strasburgera w Familiadzie
Wheel of fortune is "Koło fortuny" which is direct translation. It is still on air with different hosts along the years, but nothing beats the first version from early 90's when Wojciech Pijanowski was 1st host, "Tadeusz" was a voice that never showed his face and Magda Masny was the girl who reveals the letters. This one was the best and unique, later versions does not have this mood. And Marek Biliński wrote the theme music :) Jeopardy - if i remember correctly, polish version was "va banque" and Shark Tank was "how to become a milionnaire" or something like that but for these i am not sure.
Two not very popular TV shows (in US, guess that's why Polish TV got them cheap) from the time when i was a child in the 90's. True Blue - Zawód Policjant, Space above and Beyond - Gwiezdna Eskadra. They may been, not the most popular in the US, but are on my personal top list
Good picks! Movies are a very big rabbit hole, but thinking just about some of my fav shows: -ER - Ostry Dyżur It's an informal phrase, pretty much just a Polish version of 'emergency room'. Literally translates to 'hard-tense shift'. - Band of Brothers - Kompania Braci Pretty much 1:1, with 'kompania' (fr. compagnie) being more formal than a 'band'. -Boardwalk Empire - Zakazane Imperium ('Forbidden empire') More reasonable than trying to convert the 'boardwalk' part. - The Sopranos - Rodzina Soprano ('The Soprano Family') Underlining the family part is also a good choice, to the point about what that series is really about. And 'family' ofc carries more than one meaning in the context of the mafia. - The X Files - Z Archiwum X ([cases/things] 'From the Archive X') - Life with Louie - 'Świat według Ludwiczka' ('The world according to Louie', good title) And one fun thing, not my fav but an interesting example: - Sweating Bullets - Żar Tropków ('The heat of/from the tropics')

Tłumaczenie dosłowne i umieszczanie 'promenady' czy 'deptaka' w tytule nie miało by sensu dla widzów którzy nie mają pojęcia o Atlantic City, jego historii i architekturze. Podobnie jak odniesienia do ulicy Piotrkowskiej czy Krupówki dla widza w USA.

I read somewhere Kiepscy are actually based on some european tv format, from netherlands or something. Except similar title there is nothing comparable between this and Bundys, except there is family in both shows

I think title translation shoud be as close to the original as possible. But sometimes it's not possible to make it 1:1. Nevertheless, I consider "Wirujący seks" ("Spinning Sex" literally) vs "Dirty Dancing" as the biggest failure. Luckily, Polish people never adopted this weird title and it's still known as "Dirty Dancing".

Maybe for your next episode, you could do movie translations. One that sticks out from my youth is “Terminator” or in Polish “Elektroniczny Morderca” this one was always peculiar to me as Terminator could have worked but maybe it had something to do with communism during those years
Terminator was never translated into Polish. In Poland the movies are called "Terminator". You confuse Polish with Czech. Jak jesteś Polakiem to jeszcze "głupiej" wyszedłeś na tym. "elektroniczny Morderca could be only a sub-title" Why wouldnt you check your rersources BEFORE commenting?

Przecież w tym przykładzie dokonano doskonałego przetłumaczenia. Nie chodzi o to, żeby tłumaczyć dosłownie, tylko żeby jak najlepiej przenieść sens słów na dany język. Użycie frazy "na zawsze" brzmiało by głupio, mało kto tak mówi w Polsce i mało kto by odpowiednio zrozumiał sens takiego tytułu.
Before "Married with Children" was aired in Polish tv, it was translated as "Ożeniony z dziećmi" ("Married with children", which could be understood as beeing married to children). Magazines with tv schedule had schedules for German tv stations available in Polish cable tv and I think Pro7 was airing "Married with Children". Similiar thing happened with the Christmas action movie "Die Hard" - it was first available as a VHS release translated to "Brutalna śmierć" ("Brutal death") and after it made to Polish theaters it was translated to "Szklana pułapka" ("Glass trap").

Glass Trap just as Hangover (Kac Vegas aka “Vegas Hangover”) is a brutal example of how inadequate the polish translation becomes when a sequel is filmed. Glass Trap 2 which makes no sense because Die Hard 2 is not filmed in a skyscraper anymore and “Vegas Hangover in Bangkok” is even more ridiculous.
@@JSmithski "Szklana pułapka 2" is not that big deal - after all one might argue, that there is a lot of glass at the airport terminal. Further movies from the franchise got it far worse, with the "Żyj wolno lub szklana pułapka" as the ultimate masterpiece ;)
@@LoveMyPoland Try this one: "Dirty Dancing" in polish translated as "Wirujący seks" (Whirling Sex). Now we can assume, that "Dirty Harry" is "Whirling Harry" :). Another cop show from the early 90's "True Blue" was translated as "Zawód Policjant" ("Proffesion: Police man") but here we have something that is hard to translate word by word. We can write a book about translations - i remember first time watching Top Gun 25+ years ago and there is a scene in the beggining when they are ordered to change altitude and the controller says "take Angels ten left three zero" which means altitude 10 thousand feet and some vector to change position. What do we heard instead in polish translation? That 10 angels are in distance of 30 :) I think they have changed this translation now, because i haven't heard it for a long time. I am not mentioning scene of landing, when LSO says "call the ball", they probably did not know how to translate it so they dropped it. Biggest problem of translators is that often they do not know how to translate some specific / branch vocabulary and using generic one instead, which often is funny :)

Przystanek Alaska został nazwany tak dlatego, że główny bohater to lekarz, którego sponsorowało miasteczko z Alaski pod warunkiem, że po skończeniu studiów będzie tam praktykował przez chyba 5 lat (nie pamiętam konkretnie jak długo). Cały pierwszy sezon był o tym, że doktor myślał, że to tylko przystanek na drodze ku wielkiej karierze w wielkim mieście (chyba Nowym Jorku), ale z czasem zaczął się łamać w tym postanowieniu... Mnie sie najbardziej podobało tłumaczenie pastiszu Szklanej pułapki czyli Die Hard, z Leslie Nielsenem na Szklanką po łapkach oryginał Spy Hard. Nawiasem mówiąc cieszy mnie, że w pewnym momencie moja znajomość z zapchajdziurami, czyli serialami telewizyjnymi się kończy, bo od lat nie oglądam tv i nie mam tego złodzieja czasu i zmiękczacza mózgu w domu.
Seriale to coś więcej niż gówno typu kiepscy. Jest masa rzeczy wartych obczajenia tylko po to nie udajesz się do polskiej tv bo ta nie ma nic do zaoferowania

@@wujekstalin1 Wcześni Kiepscy byli całkiem dobrym serialem satyrycznym, ale niestety producenci nie wiedzieli, kiedy skończyć. A przecież Amerykanie robią podobnie - zamiast zamknąć naprawdę dobrą historię w 10 -15 odcinkach, ciągną do porzygu przez kilkadziesiąt albo i więcej odcinków.

A small mistake: Texas Ranger was translated to Strażnik Teksasu z a nie Strażnik Z Teksasu, so The Guard OF Texas, not FROM Texas. Also, while it's not the most obvious one, I believe "strażnik" to be among the standard translations of "ranger" - as you probably already know, we don't have a formation similar to the Texas Rangers here. In fact, Polish Wikipedia gives "Strażnicy Teksasu" as the Polish name of the formation. Ranger Smith form Yogi Bear is also translated into Polish as strażnik Smith. I wonder if there is any better translation of the word in the context?

You can translate polish tittle "Moda na sukces" as "Fashion for success", but also as "Hunger for success". And second one is a little bit closer to polish tittle in my opinion.
Fun fact about "Miami Vice": It was translated as "Policjanci z Miami", but us, kids that grow up in the turn of 80's and 90's when this show was broadcasted on polish tv, we used to call it "Policjanci z jajami" which in free translation means... "Cops with balls" :)
Still one of my favourite cop shows ever, it aged very well. The 80's mood is unreplicable but this show captured it so good, that each time i watch it it's just like time traveling.

@@lothariobazaroff3333 "Vice" stands for "criminal activities involving prostitution, pornography, or drugs" - so "Miami Vice" was basically police unit dedicated to this kind of crime. If You're Polish, than in our language this would be equivalent to "Obyczajówka", which had similar duties. Another fun fact - but for this we'll have to ask @Love My Poland! as He is native american. "Vice" is also translated as "Imadło" in Polish. Any connection with "vice" as an activity ? Or is it the same as in polish "zamek" can be translated into "lock" as in door lock, "bolt" as a part of a firearm or "castle" as a building where Queen lives :)

From old shows, there was this gem called "Quantum Leap", in Polish "Zagubiony w czasie" ("Lost in time").
Quantum Leap was great... My fave episode was the one when the protagonist found himself inside the body of childish man. You know. A guy who loved to read a comic books ( I love comic books too ), play with his nephew and the entire city was teasing of him for that... Until he saved his drowning nephew... Old good tims my dear.

Translation of "Bold and beautiful" as "Moda na sukces" is slightly more sophisticated than it looks at first glance. It's a wordplay. "Moda na sukces" should be translated back to english as "Success is in fashion".

You can do movies too. "Die Hard" translates as "Glass Trap" was an amazing example how, if you don't think ahead, you can translate yourself into a corner, as the name did not fit any of the sequel movies.

Russ, if you allow me - when it comes to Sex in the City or Seks w wielkim mieście - as you may know, Polish 'miasto' has two equivalents in Engllish - town and city and city is the bigger one, like, you know, Warsaw, Gdańsk, or New York :) So I think that's why the emphasis was put on the size - because of that 'city' in the original title :)
And the translation of The Big Bang Theory actually does play on the double entendre of the original title, even though it's a bit more subtle - as it's a play on what a pick up often leads to (the bang, or - as Sheldon would elloquently put it - the coitus) as well as the actual Big Bang theory - which in Polish is teoria Wielkiego Wybuchu (the Big Bang is Wielki Wybuch) - so you see, the Polish translation/distribution kept that entendre as close to the point as they dared :)

Strażnik may also be directly translated to "Ranger", any national park ranger would be a "strażnik rezerwatu" or "strażnik parku narodowego" here, so that's almost a 1 to 1 translation to be completely honest.
"Przystanek" can mean "(bus, train) stop", but it can also mean "destination", which was the context there.

Back in the day, I used to watch a really good Polish TV series.......Its was called Residencja? set in Warsawa.....it really was good, believable characters and interesting plot lines.....I read that they cancelled it because it was too. 'Western'....didn't have any drunken village men or pigs? I suppose. Would have been a great seller around the world.

I think that Rezydencja would do well abroad, but for polish audience was weird. Too little overpatriotic zeal and they had inconsistency - they referred to some plot points several decades earlier - but there was complete change in economic and polital system in Poland so that firm could't start like this. It was good for people who don't think of history - so almoast nobody in Poland.

Yes, słoneczny can mean sunny, but placed in context it can also mean sun.

1) 🙃 Grey's Anatomy might translate somewhat obscenely into other languages. 🙃 In France they howl with laughter at our title, because their minds are below the belt buckles.
2) Northern Exposure being filmed in Washington state is not such a shock because many exteriours here look exactly like Alaska's ones. I have been to both states, and worked up in Alaska for a few Summers. Actually, I have lived in Washington state for awhile, too, so ...
3) Sex in the (BIIIIIIG) city was also humongo-popular in Singapore and so many up-and-coming female strivers bought every single designer bag ever shown on the show, especially if Sarah Jessica Parker sported it. I liked the show for its witty voice-overs, 1st and its inimitable fashions second.
4) The Big Bang in The Big Bang Theory literally translates to ... mmmm, having very ... ummm, how can I put this? ... having very noisy and fun sex! Banging in American slang means, as you know, *F*'ing! SORRY if I just came across a bit bluntly here.
5) I like the Polish title of "Married with Children" even better than the American Title. The American title of the show relies on people understanding the very subtle nuances of American humour, because the titles jokes about how much being married with children can be so burdensome and funny because the kids are so outta control, which other cultures might not immediately understand or find funny.
6) I love Sunny Patrol, too, actually. Baywatch also is one of those titles which also would not translate well into other languages, because the words hot female lifeguards are implied, and probably not too common a sight in other places, other than in So-Cali / Southern California. Also, Baywatch easily morphs into Babe-watch which of course I still feel was not a Freudian slip, when the show's title was originally conceived.
Other questions follow about the Polish titles of other shows.
4) The Big Bang Theory is connected with official physical theory (Big Bang of universe), in English the middle word (bang) is not only onomatopoeia, but slang word for coitus (BTW: it's a word taken from the show). In Polish the physical theory is called "Teoria wielkiego wybuchu" (nearly literal translation, bang is swapped to explosion), it's seems that no one noticed ambiguity of "wybuch" (explosion, outburst, eruption, detonation), so they changed it to "podryw" (pick up). This is not connected with the scientific part of the show, which is a pity.
1) Grey's Anatomy can be translated to "anatomia Bochenka" (it's name of corresponding medical book) but then they should change sex and the last name of main character.
Comedy series "SCRUBS" translated into: "Hoży doktorzy"

Not a tv show, but a movie. The most wild translation I know would be Dirty Dancing. In polish version "wirujący seks". 😂 which literally means "spinning sex" lol. While it may sound strange at first I think it's actually pretty witty and reflects this movie's overall vibe. The translation is so strange most people I know don't even use it and prefer the original tho.

I think Polska ma talent would be way better. We like " The world according to Bundy" in all actuality and I'm going to have to look this up again, but I think it was going to be originally called that in the States here but for some reason. they changed it to Married with Children. In all honesty, my husband and I like " the world according to Bundy" better. Poland should find a word for Ranger, because Walker Texas Ranger really sums up the show. In the US, Texas Rangers are really an elite law enforcement organization here. Very interesting translations of the movies in different places.
Niektore anglojezyczne tytuly sa po prostu nie do przetlumaczenia na polski. Czasem na kolana rzucaja mnie tlumaczenia w grach anglojezycznych kiedy np postac nie skonczyla questa " I'm not finish yet" jest przetlumaczone na "Jeszcze nie umarlem" :D To podobnie jak powiedziano pewnemu profesorowi po wykladzie "You are finished." Tak,ze tlumaczenia na polski maja swoj urok. :D
"Świat według Kiepskich" was rather a loose inspiration rather than a direct Polish version/copy of "Married with Children".

Świat wg. Bundych to było doskonałe dzieło tłumacza, same dialogi też bardzo fajnie z kontekstem przełożone. Co do radosnej twórczości naszych tłumaczy to polecam zobaczyć na filmweb jak przetłumaczono tytuł krótkometrażowego filmu pt. Snake dick z roku 2020 - jest na filmwebie ;D a film (8minutowy) można znaleźć na google xD tak, żeby znać kontekst tłumaczenia to naprawdę warto obejrzeć - sam film w żadnym wypadku nie jest dla dorosłych :D

I think "w wielkim mieście" is justified by the lack of town/city distinction in Polish. The two words do invoke very different images in English. Just think about a series called "Sex & the town". I bet your expectations would be very, very different, right? In Polish the only way to ensure that the listener thinks skyscrapers, clubs and busy sidewalks is to stress the size of the city.

To be honest I don't know most of those shows, and you need to know that not every american movie/show etc was translated to polish

Wheel of fortune is "Koło fortuny" which is direct translation. It is still on air with different hosts along the years, but nothing beats the first version from early 90's when Wojciech Pijanowski was 1st host, "Tadeusz" was a voice that never showed his face and Magda Masny was the girl who reveals the letters. This one was the best and unique, later versions does not have this mood. And Marek Biliński wrote the theme music :)
Jeopardy - if i remember correctly, polish version was "va banque" and Shark Tank was "how to become a milionnaire" or something like that but for these i am not sure.

Two not very popular TV shows (in US, guess that's why Polish TV got them cheap) from the time when i was a child in the 90's. True Blue - Zawód Policjant, Space above and Beyond - Gwiezdna Eskadra. They may been, not the most popular in the US, but are on my personal top list
Good picks! Movies are a very big rabbit hole, but thinking just about some of my fav shows:
-ER - Ostry Dyżur
It's an informal phrase, pretty much just a Polish version of 'emergency room'. Literally translates to 'hard-tense shift'.
- Band of Brothers - Kompania Braci
Pretty much 1:1, with 'kompania' (fr. compagnie) being more formal than a 'band'.
-Boardwalk Empire - Zakazane Imperium ('Forbidden empire')
More reasonable than trying to convert the 'boardwalk' part.
- The Sopranos - Rodzina Soprano ('The Soprano Family')
Underlining the family part is also a good choice, to the point about what that series is really about. And 'family' ofc carries more than one meaning in the context of the mafia.
- The X Files - Z Archiwum X ([cases/things] 'From the Archive X')
- Life with Louie - 'Świat według Ludwiczka' ('The world according to Louie', good title)
And one fun thing, not my fav but an interesting example:
- Sweating Bullets - Żar Tropków ('The heat of/from the tropics')

Tłumaczenie dosłowne i umieszczanie 'promenady' czy 'deptaka' w tytule nie miało by sensu dla widzów którzy nie mają pojęcia o Atlantic City, jego historii i architekturze. Podobnie jak odniesienia do ulicy Piotrkowskiej czy Krupówki dla widza w USA.

I think title translation shoud be as close to the original as possible. But sometimes it's not possible to make it 1:1. Nevertheless, I consider "Wirujący seks" ("Spinning Sex" literally) vs "Dirty Dancing" as the biggest failure. Luckily, Polish people never adopted this weird title and it's still known as "Dirty Dancing".
You forgot a Knight Rider translated to Polish as "Nieustraszony" Polish: "The Fearless"

Maybe for your next episode, you could do movie translations. One that sticks out from my youth is “Terminator” or in Polish “Elektroniczny Morderca” this one was always peculiar to me as Terminator could have worked but maybe it had something to do with communism during those years
Terminator was never translated into Polish. In Poland the movies are called "Terminator". You confuse Polish with Czech.

Przecież w tym przykładzie dokonano doskonałego przetłumaczenia. Nie chodzi o to, żeby tłumaczyć dosłownie, tylko żeby jak najlepiej przenieść sens słów na dany język. Użycie frazy "na zawsze" brzmiało by głupio, mało kto tak mówi w Polsce i mało kto by odpowiednio zrozumiał sens takiego tytułu.
