The Dyna-King is the single best fly tying Vice EVER. I’ve owned mine for 25 years and it is the best. I own a Dyna-King Barracuda, an Able, Renzetti, several Regals, a couple cheap no-names and my first Thompson. Spend the money, own the best.
@@ontheflywithryan5611 I have not been home in 6 years. I understand the fall run is not what it was back in the day, when you could literally scoop fish out of the whitewater as the waves rolled up on the beach around the lighthouse.
It looks like your vise is the Barracuda Junior, rather than the "full size" Barracuda. The main difference is that the Junior's shaft is 1/4" diameter compared to 3/8" for its bigger brother. I considered both and preferred the Junior for its lighter weight and the fact that I don't tie massive salt water flies, for which the "Senior" might be a bit more stable. The only thing I don't like about this and other DK vises is their slotted jaws...great for holding larger hooks rock solidly, but for smaller trout hooks the optional DK midge jaws are really better.
You could definitely be right. I bought it second hand. You're absolutely right about the slotted jaws and small flies. Thankfully I don't tie many small trout flies 🤣.
I have owned the Trekker and now own the Jr. Barracuda. Great vises. But unfortunately the price of Dyna-King vises have become very expensive. Nice review.
Thanks! I couldn't agree with you more. Had I not found this used Barracuda a Trekker would have been the direction I went. They are definitely cost prohibitive for lots of fly tiers. I look at it as an investment in something I enjoy almost as much as fishing itself, and hopefully an investment that will last for years.
Had mine for over 17 yrs. Normally I do not comment on products. Unfortunately not long after purchasing the vise the jaw started sticking close. Had to beat on it to open. Replaced the jaws and still it sticks. Would not waste the money for something that costs over $500.
Do you have to have a high priced vice? IM 70 years old been at this for a hell of a long time. I have used the same vice for ever. The price of most all vices including the so called Budget vice is to much Get the vice you can without all the bells and whistles that's put on them. The vise needs only to hold the hook. I have a Thompson came in a red box. Not much to it. Not much could go wrong. One of the best buys that I have made in my 70 Years. Save all the money you can for materials. Im lucky I hunt and fish. Most of my my feathers and hairs come from the field. a lot of the tools I have made myself.🥸
You certainly don't need an expensive vise but the number of cheap vises out there today that can't hold a 3/0 down to a 20ish size hook is surprisingly high. You also don't need a high priced car but plenty of Ferraris get sold every year. 🤷 Same goes with fly rods. You can catch fish on a $10 5 pound fiberglass rod, but most people would rather not.

I grew up in Montauk. I cannot decide between Dyna-King Barracuda Deluxe and HMH TRV Spartan. Thanks for the great review.
They're both fantastic vises. Do you ever get to fish Montauk these days? I was there for 4 days in October and almost got skunked 🤣

Thanks for the great review. I commonly tie 18 - 22 size flies and just bought this vise. I have tied 26 hooks but my fingers and eyes don’t like too!
You're a better man than me 😂. If I need something smaller than a size 20 I give up and go bass fishing.
Hello Ryan. That was in my opinion an honest review.
I hope it comes across that way. I might be a little too into this vise to be objective 🤣
they make holder for there

@@ontheflywithryan5611 Your vise is bullet proof. Should last a life-time.
I use a hair rubber band for the rear hook on articulated flies
I like when you pull the vises lever you here a click .very nice.
I couldn't agree more. It's very satisfying
Buy some flitz metal polish and make that thing look even better than brand new. You womt be disappointed!
That's not a bad idea!
@@ontheflywithryan5611 if you do, post a quick video. It will look amazing.

And apex
You don't use stainless hooks do you??
Occasionally for saltwater
