Yabbying And Fishing In Billabong Creek, Using Carp As Yabby Bait

- Holly and I went fishing in Billabong Creek between Rand and Urana on New Years eve. We took the yabby nets with us and went yabbying too. It didn't take us very long to catch a couple of carp for yabby bait...

I love watching your channel.
You prove that families can have fun together outdoors for little coin, and that even the most unlikely of places can produce results.
Good on you.
Thank you so much for your kind words. 🙏
It did turn into a Carp-Fest, but they kept you busy and allowed for a few yabbies to be caught too. Always enjoy watching the two of you out fishing and having fun. Great job to you both and thanks for sharing another fantastic adventure!
Thank you so much Larry. I hope this video didn't make you homesick mate.
What an Awesome video Bro.. Love seeing Holly fishing with dad...
Thabks bro. We always have so much fun together.
Whadda team! Holly & Robbie, yay!! Great vid, thank you team Robbie!
Thanks so much mate. 👍👍
Enjoy you videos Robbie. Great to see your relationship with Hollie as well.
Thank you so much Jeff.
Great to watch as always, many thanks for sharing Mate :)
Thanks so much Robert.
Big enough if you get enough. That reminds me of the 12th man. "If you run off Renouf often enough, you'll score tries." haha. Great session on the carp mate, I really enjoyed this one. Well done
Haha thanks so much mate. I loved the 12th man. 😂
Looked like fun! Robbie and Hollys Carpathon lol 😁🎣😊
Haha thanks mate.
great to see more videos from you robbie happy new year
Thanks so much mate. Happy New Year to you too.
Good trip mate enjoyed that 👍👍👍👍👍 hope you’re surviving the weather good 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Cam. We're certainly.coppong it mate, but are all OK thanks. Lots of new trees down around here.
Great father and daughter video, Robbie. Happy new year to you both ✌️🙂
Thanks so much Tubby, Happy New Year to you too mate. 👍
Northern California trout/steelhead/salmon/tuna and crayfish hunter here. I really enjoy your videos Robbie. Fisherman down under have the same spirit! Fisherman of the World unite!
Thank you so much mate. I would love to visit America solely for a fishing trip one day.
I watch an American channel called "Ace Videos". Some of the scenery is simply spectacular.
Great to see how confident the young lady has come with her fishing, she had no hesitation at all grabbing the carp and unhooking 😂 loving the videos still mate, been watching you for years and years.
Thank you so much mate. Holly certainly is amazing. One day she wants to work in the local tackle shop. I think she will nail it.
Awesome video , Happy New Year 😊
Thanks mate. Happy New Year to you too.
Ooooohhhhh!!! Carp me up... You can Carp me up I'll never stop.Bahahahahahaha! 🤣🤣
Omg Robbie I pissed myself laughing at you when you sang that tune. You are a absolute crack up... LEGEND.
Hahaha thanks mate. There's a song for every occasion, even if I have to modify the lyrics a little bit. LOL 😂
The water rat reminded me of when I was out at Roma and I saw one walking up the side of the road.
When you got the gear out of the bucket, it reminded me of an old radio show.: Knife, fork, frying pan, thing for getting rabbits out of camels hooves.
Haha thanks mate when I took the gear out of the bucket it reminded me of a 1980s low budget horror movie. LOL 🤣 😆
Aloha. I’m originally from Tasmania, but moved to the states when I was three. Spent four months in Australia surfing around after high school. Had yabbis then, also Tasmanian scallops. Delicious!
Hi mate, thank you so much for tuning in. America is a beautiful country too, just like Australia.
Great job. Seems like you 2 had a good time
Thanks mate, we sure did. We had a blast this day.
You guys had me subscribing within 10 seconds. Great channel. Gonna catch up on all your adventures now. 👍
Thank you so much for your kind words mate. Holly adds a lot of value to my adventures. And my whole life.
Your arvo fish with your daughter is my version of a perfect day Rob. What you said about the camping areas makes sense now. I always use to complain about those signs. Happy new year. You seem to be doing ok with your back. Best of luck for the year. Cheers
Thank you so much for your kind words mate. I use to be the same until I drove all the way up to the Mitta Mitta River to fish at sunrise in a day visitor area only to find someone camped there fishing.
I was so angry. LOL 🤣 Thay was years ago, but it tally made me appreciate day visitor areas.
An outing that kept the action fast paced. Sometimes that is the most memorable kind of outing.
Thanks mate. This one was certainly a memorable outing.
Nice guys plenty of carp in there that’s for sure seems like a great bait spot you have carp for the yabbies you shrimp for the yellas and yabbies for the cod that’s a great spot cheers for the video
Thanks mate. I wonder how many yabbies there would be in there if there were no carp?
I would think there would be heaps in there but there is far to many carp in there to be much else by the looks of it
Happy New Year Robbie and Hollyfrom Kirsty in Holland😊
Thank you so much Kristy. Happy New Year to you too.
hey Robbie, wonderful video as always, any video is a good video, but I would love to see some fly fishing. the trout are looking up at the dry now which always makes the fishing more exciting! anyway thanks for the video and have a great day Robbie!
Thanks mate. I hope to get out with my fly rod soon, probably closer to the end of the school holidays.
G’day Robbie, that’s a different spot again mate 👍🏼. Glad to see you both getting rid of a few more Mud Marlin.
Thanks Wayne. We sure had a lot of fun filming this one. Behind the camera is was struggling though. I was allergic to something there and was just crazy itchy.
Hey Robbie, well done! I finally went yabbying and caught 2 bait sized yabbies LOL! but at least it wasn’t nothing! Bro did a good job haha! All the best mate!
Thabks do much buddy. Well done on the yabbies. 2 is a lot better than none. 👍👍
Another great video mate. Holly was on fire. Pity there were no natives caught, especially when there is plenty of live bait for them.
Keep them vids coming and happy new year.
Thanks so much Brad. I think the issue is that the water dries up too frequently. Upstream it is more permanent and there may be a few cod and yellas up there.
Another great video of fun and laughter. It really emphasises the issue we face here in the country...how prolific Carp are in our waterways. Interesting to see the water rat doing its thing along the creek. Everything has a purpose in nature, though I'm not sure why nature needs so many Carp.
Thanks Neil. They really are in plague proportions aren't they.
I wonder how many yabbies would be in that spot if there were no carp?
Heaps most likely.
Hello rob
Wow that swim was alive with fish mate .. I was fascinated by the water rat... do they all have the white tail ? And are they what we call water voles ?
Well done rob and holly again to entertainment. Thank you and a big hello to Loretta and all the gang ..
😊🏴🎣
Thanks so much Mike.
Yes the water rats all have a white tail. They're real name is Rakali. They are a protected native animal that use to be hunted for their fur.
I'm not sure what yours is mate, I will have to google them.
All well here thanks. I hope that all is well with your clan too..
Sorry for the carp.good luck with the yabbys.God bless both of youns.❤
Thanks so much Becky. There are so many carp in that spot. WOW.
God bless you too. 🙏🙏
Was having a chat to a nice Cop over here in Tassie and he mentioned your recent Red Belly Video while we were talking about Trout next to a creek. You're definitely getting some reach out there mate!
Haha thanks mate . I might have to start wearing a wig. LOL 🤣
Beautiful spot mate, very kool water rat footage. Looks like it might be worth a yabby there again in the future with all the undersized ones.
Thanks mate. I reckon some night time yabbying would be superb in this area.
Hey Robbie great video. Today I court some carp and I hooked a huge one that snapped my rod
Thanks mate. WOW That's epic. Bugger about the rod though.
G'day Robbie. A shout out from the Canadian Sunshine coast. In viewing your episodes i have tidbits of wisdom i would love to share with you from many years of being a guide throughout western Canada. In one of the fishing camps i worked as a manager i would smoke fish for the clients upon their arrival and while they were there. We had northern pike aka fresh water barracudas, walleye kinda like a murry cod best i can figure and the beloved mud marlin. I would fillet these all boneless ( i would offer a dollar a bone if any were found) and smoke them the same over alder wood in an apple cider/vinegar marinade with brown sugar/white sugar with molasses and bit of sea salt. Mind you these are all from cold water just after ice off. Consistently the first plate to go was the carp. I never labelled them or told any one til after the fact. One of my personal favorite fish to catch is the red fin and i have caught everything there is in western canada. Even of the world class trophy fish i still love'm the most!!! As a young'n i would use my index finger inside their mouth and feel for the back of the eye socket and then push up exposing the eye ball out of the skull. I would then use my left hand thumb nail to further push out the eye and with a downward pressure the eye would be removed fully intact. I would then pass the hook through the optical nerve and out the pupil. This was the best bait ever and lasted for ever too. Not sure if it is legal over there/ down under/ what ever butt hay it is a tip i wanted to pass on. Another tip is vanilla and sambuca/anise were two of my top scents for fish and animals. I would cure cut plug with salt, sambuca, mrs. smiths laundry bluing and layer them in an esky. Won several tournaments with my 45/45 cut cure plugs. Start the knife behind the head, cut at a 45 degree angle towards the back/bottom of the bait fish to the backbone, then turn the knife at a 45 degree angle and cut straight down through the other side of the bait. Easier if partially frozen or chilled. Gut and place in esky. In a 6 pack esky i would put down and inch or two of pickling salt and do a head to tail placement to get the most in and be even for uniform curing. once a layer was full i would lightly splash, now i would use a squirt bottle and cover the bait with the laundry bluing and sambuca. Then repeat til the cooler was full for a days fishing. The salt "hardened" them and kept the scales on, the bluing made them shine (blue is the color most visible at the greatest depth) and the sambuca was a great scent attractor. Some time i would have a wee nip but i dare not share that here as it is a family channel. This was used for catching the big king salmon on the north coast of Haida Gwaii and some monster barn door halibut. Tight lines, many blessings, health wellness and prosperity to you, your loved ones and all who watch. Thanks eh !!!! Peace...in John
Hi John, WOW you have certainly enjoyed a lot of time fishing by the sounds of it.
Thank you for your comment and for sharing your great wisdom.
I apologise for the late reply, but I found this one in the spam folder for some reason..🙏
@@robbiefishing all good mate, all the best to you and yours!
Some really great action today! Thanks for the video and a very Happy New Year to you and yours.
Thank you so much mate. Happy New Year to you and your family too..
Great county river fishing and potting many thanks guys for sharing. Can’t belated fresh Yabbys. What state mate? I am NSW haven’t heard of creeks rive mate🎉
Thanks so much Des. This is in NSW mate, near the small township of Rand in the Riverina region.
Bro was slaying 'em! The water rat was very cool, must have sniffed the carp. Bet there is lots of water in there now after the rain you got, and the weekend is looking pretty wet too. PS Glad you didn't use sausage (dog) for yabby bait!
Haha thanks Frank. Bro was on fire. She loves that type of fishing. So much for the predicted el'nino. LOL
I would rather kick mud off my boots than dust.
Yr a pretty awesome dad robbie👌✌️
Thank you so much Paul, I do my best mate. I'm not perfect but I do my best. The gift of parenthood is something that I will NEVER take for granted.
Hey robbie, went for a camp and a fish at leslei dam up in qld and didnt have much luck out in the open but went up a creek and got a nice yella going 38cm my pb and sight fished to cod over 70cm but didnt have any luck with them
I hope you still had a great time mate.
Yeah the old mud marlin or as I call em freshwater jewie were definitely on fire in that spot👍🏻I remember when I was about Holly's age I heard on the radio talking about euthanasia & thinking what the doe's "youth in Asia" have to do with mmmmm that subject😂
Haha believe it or not, I thought the exact same thing. LOL 😆😆😆
@@robbiefishing I've found out latter that plenty of people have thought it too 😆...even grown adults 30+ I guess youth in Asia isn't exactly what Nan & Pop bring up at Christmas😂
Have to share some exciting news 🗞️ my neighbour gifted me a Rex Hunt Ripper series rod 🥳🥳🥳of course I immediately thought of you Robbie 🥳🥳
Hey Sharon that is so awesome. I have never heard of the Ripper series. I have a Rex Hunt Black label combo.
I have been privileged to have fly fished with Rex a number of times. He's such a funny guy. Fills every room that he walks into with smiles pretty quickly. Haha
@@robbiefishing sounds just like you
Love you netting skills gee they were dark yabbies Carp central
There’s a creek I cross when head to Griffith on the Kidman Way I think it’s called the Yanco i thoughts that’s where you originally were
Thanks Pete. The Yanco is actually a tributary of the Billabong.
The Billabong is usually a permanent stream down to Rand, some times not thst far. It often dries up between Rand and Jerilferie.
At Jerilderie the Colombo Creek runs in, and then down at Conargo the Yanco runs in..
Colombo actually runs off the Yanco at Marundah.
Do the Billabong is permanent water from Jerilderie downstream. This stretch where I am fishing is often seasonal.
@@robbiefishing thanks Robbie for information I plan to stop there in Feb and have a fish I made my own bait bomb using old school soap containers with holes drilled in it also I made one out of a good sized toothbrush/toothpaste container and works well
hey robbie u should go for a fish at the drop near Berrigan its been good for cod and yellas and lots of red fin not long ago there was a meter cod caught there and its filed with snakes so be carefull if you go it comes from
mulwala
Thanks mate. That is actually on my To-Do list. I've been there, but not fishing. I did fish in the Berrigan Channel near Berrigan a few months back though. That video will be in my "From The Vault" series this winter. 👍👍
Come to Mudgee on corn I caught a 1 meter carp there. You Beauty ha ah lol
Thanks for another great video buddy one day holly's Gunnar chuck u in the drink cheers from grumpy
Haha thanks so so much Grumpy. I think you might be right.
I hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year mate.
I am fishing with Holly right now and we haven't had a single nibble. LOL
Im going nxt week to Windemere Dam near mudgee to catch some catfish...anyone else been there...nice1 robbie😮
Thanks Paul. I've never been there myself. Good luck mate.
@@robbiefishing hey robbie if I catch anything will make a short video and maybe send u the link...Tc there
Looks like the bait might have eaten the yabbies. Lol😂
Hahahaha that's so funny!!
Cheat sheet is a must .Fit in the sky rocket no excuse.Bud
What?
Do you ever use the yabby tail meat as trout bait? I know browns love it, and you only need a tiny bit along with a worm, then a piece of white corn to cover the hook point. Works like a dream around here.
Thanks mate, I use to use it a lot when I was younger. Indies work very well.
I've been meaning to make a video doing this.
I used this very bait in a Lake Buffalo video recently chasing redfin, but I caught nothing. I caught nothing on any other bait either.
It is a great way to make good use of a big Yabby.
If there are yabbies in the bong, it's time to change the water lol.
Hahaha
I reckon u need to tighten the drag it is a lot easy to get them in
I would but I'm only using 6lb line.
Hey Robbie, I was wonder what brand of rod and reel is your cod rod mate ?
Hi mate, it is a Venom cork grip baitcaster. There's a link to it in the video description of each of my cod videos. 👍
Shrimp are best bait two on a hook back to back 2nd to none
I agree. Best for yellowbelly.
good to see native watter rat.
Thanks mate, I agree. 👍👍
alternatively i think if more free camp sites where available there, thing would be alot more spread out. but that is just my theory.
Thats a very good theory and I agree. We need more of both. LOL
It’s a shame that the waterway has been completely overtaken by carp. Good job getting them out of the system!
Thanks Jim. I wonder how much clearer the water would be if they weren't there? Or how many more yabbies there would be?
@@robbiefishing they muck things up for sure. I read that they feed on the eggs of the native fish species by rooting through the natural cover. I can’t stand mud marlins.
I just saw the river level drop a foot
Hahaha
I don't know anything about fishing but why didn't you put one of those shrimp on the line? You mentioned they are good for yellowbelly..
Nice to be out in nature.. good for your mental health.
Holly did well..
Thanks Mike, it certainly is very good for mental health. Nature has some amazing healing properties.
I wasn't sure if there were any yellowbelly in there or not. If I knew for a fact that there were yellowbelly in there I would have put one on.
Looking back, I probably should have put one on anyway..I've caught plenty of carp on shrimp too.
Hey robbie do you have any places i can go Murray cod fishing in Victoria im trying to catch my first one?
Hi mate, Lake Eildon is loaded with Murray cod. It has literally been stocked with millions.
All of the tributaries of the Murray River, and the Murray River itself have Murray cod in them.
Gee you have coped some weather up there bro
You're not wrong bro. There's a lot of houses around with leaking roofs that have never had leaking roofs before... Mine included. Absolutely incredible storms, and possibly more next week.
@@robbiefishing yeah I couldn't believe some of the footage going around
It's a NSW carpathon!
Haha yep.
@@robbiefishing ;o)
G'day Robbie how far out of rand was this
Hi mate, about 10-15km or so.
Thanks mate, my son Levi has been watching all your videos lately he loves them good work mate his learnt heaps
maybe campers should be allowed there and catch mud marlins . to feed the water rats , but a lot of widow makers ( big gum trees ) there . In my Shire camping is allowed any one area for one night .
WOW Sounds like you have strict rules. The homeless situation here in Wangaratta is so bad that there are people camping everywhere.
Robbie! WHY didn't you bait up with some of those shrimp??? You prob still would have got carp on them, BUT you might have gotten a yella or cod with it!
I thought about it. I have caught carp on shrimp plenty of times. Looking back, I should have done that.
@@robbiefishing Yeah it might just have shifted the balance a bit!
I ALWAYS fish 2 baits in fresh water.
@@Urbanfisho I did have a cheese rod in too which didn't get any bites.
@@robbiefishing Ok.
I juzt moved to mildura wheres a good area to get some yabbies at
Hi mate I would try in the Murray River.
@robbiefishing I've tried and tried! Only thing I can ever catch is shrimp or dirty carp
How does carp taste ?
Absolutely terrible. LOL
Finally caught a 65cm carp at Cairn Curran reservoir the other day. Was the ugliest carp I've ever caught. Had 1 row of very large scales and not much scales anywhere else on it.
Haha that sounds exactly like a Mirror carp. Google mirror carp and see if that's what you caught. Well done mate.
@@robbiefishing yep sticking mirror carp.
Not a good sign but a bit of fun
Thanks mate.
@@robbiefishing would love to go fishing with you one day mate
Hi Rob
I haven’t been able to catch a cod. Been trying last couple of weeks. Would be able to help me?
Hi mate,.check out my Murray cod play list. It's loaded with videos full of tips and tricks.
I'm not sure where you are fishing, but here in North East Victoria it's been tough due to so many storms causing dirty fluctuating water.
Wagga Wagga, lake Albert.
You need a new Tshirt 😂
Haha I've only just finished wearing this one in. It's good for another couple of years yet. LOL 😂
Bro 🤣🤣🤣
LOL Teenage lingo.
Why throw one of to best baits for cod back in ?
I would catch 10 to 1 more cod on shrimp than yabbies
I agree, but I was quite doubtful that there were any cod there. I had a rod with cheese on it in for the whole evening and it didn't get a single bite.
Come to Mudgee it’s carp fest (not yummy) lol
Where....and have u been to the river or the dam..I wanna try there😮😮
It’s good. Mudgee
NSW Australia
Happy and prawn
I saw the saddest thing that I was fishing And The three dead turtles in a opera house net and I thought one was still alive, so I called wildlife rescue and unfortunately the one turtle didn’t make it that’s why you don’t use Opera house nets
Spot on mate, they are absolute death traps. I am so glad that they've been outlawed.
Same
Should have cut off a piece of the carp and given it to Mr Water Rat!
We actually did, but it never came up for it.
Thanks for not killing it on camera it really upsets me see that
Thanks Catherine. I don't believe they need to be killed on camera, unless there is a reason. I killed a redfin on camera once, but that was a demonstration of how to kill a fish quickly and humanely.
The rest of the time I keep that part off camera.
@@robbiefishing thank you normally I just fast forward but sometimes it catches me off guard n I find it quite upsetting having a good night hope you enjoyed the day
first lol
Good job. Second lol
Well done mate.👍👍
Why do you keep calling Holly ( bro)😂
LOL Because she enjoys it. Usually I call her sweetheart or darling. Haha Some times I call her Dolls.
Why are you using Holly for bait? You said you are fishing with Holly. I hope you left her in one piece at least.
I right her under a bubble float. LOL 🤣🤣
And didn't forget to give her a lift home😂
Hey Robbie I'm in Wangaratta/ Beechworth whee do you recommend for Murry cod or yella
No native could breed in there ripper kill.
Forgive me but I believe it’s illegal to use any part of carp for bait or return any part of one to the water.
Hi mate, you need not seek my forgiveness as you have not sinned. 🙏
You're just wrong that's all. LOL👍
It is illegal to use dead redfin for bait in NSW (Not illegal in Vic), but it IS perfectly legal to use dead carp as bait in NSW.
@@robbiefishing you are indeed correct. Thanks.
@@Trackbashersinretirement I drove up into the Riverina last year to go yabbying and took redfin off cuts as bait. Being that I was filming I thought I better double check the rules. Lucky I did. Haha 😂
@@robbiefishing we are in Qld and Iam very careful with feral fish and any feral animal really.
@@Trackbashersinretirement Ah OK, that makes sense. You guys have the most strict rules of the lot. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it's even illegal to keep a pet rabbit in QLD.
You can buy baked enamel steel two prong rod holders the pommy style you use are useless 2 rods close together no good
I like them.
Good work on the carp @robbiefishing
Thanks mate. 👍👍
