    300 hp and a million billion foot TONS of torque, no need for foot pounds measurement for these bad boys lol

    I always thought you could get so much more out of these if you could cool the exhaust side enough to produce vacuum!

    • @pietperske3583
      @pietperske3583 10 месяцев назад +1

      The very first steam engines were "vacuum" engines, and very inefficient. Atmospheric pressure is 1 bar or 14 psi the pressure inside the boiler of a steam engine ranges form 200 to 300 psi or 14 to 21 bar.
      There is no "exhaust" side. The piston has a power stroke up and down, or in and out, therefore it is a one stroke engine. Therefore it is equivalent to an eight cylinder 4 stroke engine when you measure the power strokes per rotation.

    300 hp and all the torque.

  • @Bloodgod40
    @Bloodgod40 Год назад +9

    I wonder what kind of generator you could power with this engine. Google says 300 horsepower = 220 kw, but that's an ideal conversion and not representative of real world efficiency losses. Still, you'd be able to generate waaaay more power than a domestic house would use. If you owned some forest land out in the boondocks somewhere with logging rights, you could run this continually, one tree at a time (replacing each chopped tree with a fast growing species like sitka spruce) and sell the excess to the grid.

      Continously processing the wood is no small feat.
      And don't these things work on oil or coal?

    • @Bloodgod40
      @Bloodgod40 10 месяцев назад

      @@BAD_CONSUMER It's a steam engine - it will run on anything that burns. Internal combustion engines require refined, clean liquid fuel. External combustion engines just require something that can generate heat and boil the water. The only thing that's going inside the engine is the water vapor from the boiler. The fuel never comes anywhere near the interior of the engine. It just goes into the boiler. This means it can be pretty much anything, as long as it will burn.

    • @bigRgurn
      @bigRgurn  3 года назад +7

      No, the boiler is very much undersized for the engine, but since it is just for show, it works well. If it was in use, to provide a source of power, it would require a much larger boiler and could then produce higher RPMs if required.

    Are the engines still around and running?

    • @bigRgurn
      @bigRgurn  2 года назад +2

      Yes, there are quite literally thousands of steam engines still in use around the world today, many still used in industry to produce goods, others in collections. This particular engine is part of a private collection and is run multiple times a year, just for entertainment. It could be put into use if an appropriate sized boiler was constructed.

      @@bigRgurn the boiler that you have looks more than big enough. With the governor and cutoff set correctly, and the boiler around 120psi, you would absolutely be able to run her at working speed and probably drive some small machines too.
