  • Panipopo Recipe
    Ingredients:
    2 packets of yeast
    1/3 cups of warm water
    4-6 cups of flour
1/2 cups of sugar + 1 tablespoon of sugar
    50 grams of melted butter
    1.5 cups of warm milk
    Sauce:
    2 cups of coconut cream
    2 cups of water
    1/2 cups of sugar
    Method:
    1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius.
    2. In a small bowl, combine yeast, tablespoon of sugar & warm water. Mix & then put aside to foam for 10 minutes.
    3. In a big bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, butter & yeast mixture & add flour. Add in 2 cups of flour at a time.
    4. Flour board and knead dough for 10 minutes.
    5. Put in a greased bowl & leave to rise for 45 minutes.
    6. Once risen, roll out like pizza dough. Cut to strips and roll.
    7. Place buns in the tray, and make sure to space them out. Leave to rise until double in size.
    8. Mix all sauce ingredients, & then pour into dough.
    9. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
    Yields 3.5 dozen panipopos.

Hello Ane. In short, thank you for an amazing recipe and thorough tutorial. I can’t believe I pulled off such a delicious fluffy easy bun.
As a side note I only used 4t of yeast because that’s what our sachets yield and it was just fine. I got a big tray of 20 buns.
Now for the extra details ☺️ I’m not a bread/dough baker at all, in fact dough intimidates me more than any other type of baking.
That said, we’ve been living overseas for 16 years now so I have tried a couple of different coconut bun recipes. They’ve only been ok but nothing Ive been excited to keep making.
So as I was watching this tutorial I did take note of your comment that typically coconut buns tend to be a firmer (?) bread and that ideally for you, you prefer to use your honey butter rolls.
I decided I’d go with this classic recipe tonight since that is what my husband is used to (this was supposed to be his treat) and plan to make them using the honey butter roll dough next, to compare which we prefer. But after tasting these, I’m amazed at how delightfully light and fluffy they came out. I’ve never had such success with making dough so congratulations to you!! I’m telling you, it’s not easy teaching this old dog new tricks 😅
Thank you again Ane for sharing. Your recipe is a hit and because you articulate so well I was finally able to pull of some coconut buns I am proud of! I can’t wait to try the other rolls.
    PS sorry for the essay!!
