    Update : After my initial testing of this stove, I reached out to FireMaple and they stated that it was defective.
    From there they sent me a new one but after some testing the performance is exactly the same.
    In comparison to the Jetboil Minimo stove, the Minimo is faster at all types of boiling and rated for 1,500 BTU's less than the FireMaple. Interesting! Also, the Jetboil is much more fuel efficient.
    I've shared my thoughts concerning this stove with FM and how they can improve it via some design changes and it is now up to them.
    With the FM Sunflower stove/Heater that I shared a few months back, FM has stated that they will be improving the design of that product as well as it has some flaws.

    Luke did a boil test with the kettle and in did not see him do the boil test with the cup that comes with the stove.
    I understand that people often use other types of pots, pans, and skillets and I can see how the distance between the pot support can cause the longer boil times.
    I hope he tests it head to head with the attached cup to the jet boil.

    Two things I saw with this stove that I immediately didn't like is the swappable covers, those scream fire hazard to me, and the ignitor. Those things tend to break easy, especially when they are in the flames like that getting heated to high temperatures and then the sudden cooling they go through when shut off.

    Great review Luke! I have a couple of friends who have purchased the jetboil and one of these maple stoves. I was not impressed with either one to be honest. Just seemed like too much to get up and running. I have a $15 pocket rocket butane from Amazon, that has worked well for over 4 years! Piezo igniter still kicks butt and I have had zero issues with it. It boils a cup of water quickly, and is cheap enough, that if it ever goes out on me, I can pick up another on the cheap.
    I also have an OLD Coleman Peak 1 (Model 400A), that is pretty much bullet proof. Heavier than the standard iso-butane stoves, but, with a full tank of fuel, it will cook meals for a weekend trip.
    Keep the reviews coming sir!!

    Ive used both genuine jet boils and jetboil knockoffs, and I find the performance difference is negligible. Is the extra 30 seconds to get to the boil worth 100 dollars - not for what I use it for! This is the crux of the matter - does it do what you need it to or are you just buying a Jetboil for bragging rights ...?

      I have a Jetboil from pretty early on and it still works great. Now if it fails me would I replace it with this stove? Yeah probably. Saving $100 is pretty huge and I'm not that impatient where waiting 6 minutes for my freeze dried meal to be ready vs 3 minutes is that big of a deal.

Even if you throw the poorly designed stand away the kit for those not able to pay for a "better" performance from jetboil or msr will still get a great inexpensive alternative to boil water to make drinks and reheat and rehydrate. I feel your " if ya only want to boil water, ya could make it work" comment, may stop people buying what huge numbers of people all over the world see as a very acceptable if inferior product for a fraction of the price. Take a look at the FM polaris i think you would rate it highly. Good informative video but i do have a question. I'm a wild camper with 50+ years experience with stoves and equipment. What is the modern obsession with time when it comes to boiling water?
    In my time camping i have never once thought of a stove as bad because it took a while to boil water, in fact, if i had, i would never use my spirit stove again but in fact it's my favourite. Surely if a stove is well made and gets the job done then that is the important thing?
    I guess its a symptom of this social media age where the equipment becomes more important than the activity.
    If you're like me, then the scenery, wildlife and solitude is much more important than a few minutes of waiting.

    • @steveturner3999
      @steveturner3999 8 месяцев назад +20

      I think the obsession is with fuel usage for an equivalent boil. If I was an ultralight distance hiker that might be an issue. For normal camping I don’t see the problem. It may be a wash with money saved on the stove being used to buy more fuel. Need more than two tests for sure.

    • @AuntMaryNC
      @AuntMaryNC 8 месяцев назад +11

      Agree 100%. My only thought would be fuel consumption. If you enjoy using a stove like this, you might need to be prepared to have more fuel on hand, so the cost of use is higher even though the price of the stove is lower.

    • @Oldmandoom95
      @Oldmandoom95 8 месяцев назад +13

      You're missing the point old timer. The reason people are more interested in fast boil times is because it means that less fuel is being used and the stove is more efficient. If you have to keep a stove on for longer, you're going through more fuel. Meaning that you'll need to pack extra canisters for longer trips, which means more weight in your pack.

    Hi Luke! I was excited to see you review something that I owned. I am concerned that maybe the X3 however is a bad model. I have the X2 that I bought in 2021. After watching your review, I couldn't help but think, "does mine really take 6 min to boil?" So, I just went and grabbed it. It's roughly 37°F where I live in KS. Started with very cold water, warm canister... it only took me 2½ min to boil .5L of water in the provided pot. This may be longer than Jetboil, but for the price ($70 then and now on Amazon) that's worth it to me. I'm thinking that it's probably not fair to condemn all of the models based off of your review of one of them. I love your channel and watching your adventures! Thanks for your time.

    Honestly I think the problem with this is :
    #1 Basis of analysis which seems to be systemic.
    You all are judging by how fast not how fuel economic it is. You are acting like a two seater racecar is going to be equal to a station wagon or four door in a limited resource situation. It's not.
    Ultimately how fast something boils water isn't really that important, most of us don't boil water in our kettles at home faster. Outside with limited resources I want the item that is safe, doesn't waste fuel, best fit in my kit, and the most comfortable for my purposes.
    A little time making coffee or meal after physical effort is to be treasured. A bit of comfort and normalcy that crosses home, adventure and crisis if it can be had. While imo a fast boil isn't worth using up five times more fuel. That's just my opinion though.

  • @thomasmusso1147
    @thomasmusso1147 8 месяцев назад +3

    This one gets a thumbs down 👎 .. I think that Luke has missed the bus on this one.
    'Effective' vs 'Efficient' .. two completely different ball games. Gas Consumption per Boil is an important consideration and at times, this is lost on the Speed Freaks.
    The Pot Stand is designed for a completely different application .. Cooking! One needs a different 'type of heat' in this case. Figure it out!
    Also, factor in the price of the additions to the Jetboil to bring it up to the standard Fire Maple Spec and then compare prices. Then ('if' the Jetboil is proven to be more gas-efficient .. NOT to be confused with 'effective') calculate how many gas cartridges will have to be bought and used to offset the price difference and over what time period.
    Similar to the fools who bought diesel-powered automobiles 'in order to save on fuel' (and there are many who had / have this in mind). Factor in the difference in price petrol vs diesel .. fuel consumption .. shorter service intervals and much higher repair costs for diesels, especially in the case of small capacity engines. A study by a respected Automotive Association showed that the average motorist, doing a 'standard average' number of kilometers per annum, would have to keep, run and service the vehicle for a ridiculous number of years (something like 50 years if I recall correctly) in order to offset the purchase price and service costs. Some saving!
    I run my Gas Cooker on a lower, but sufficient to do the job, heat setting when boiling water. Yes, it takes me a little longer to get the boil, but my gas cartridge lasts longer per number of boils doing it this way.
    I'm not into the 'how fast / how light / the latest / most innovative / whatever, King of the Mountain' Game. My gear is robust and does the job. Is what I could then / can now afford and is paid for. Probably not the lightest, but if it is needed on the outing, it goes with. Too heavy for my liking? Ajust accordingly or live with it.

    I have the Firemaple Polaris model of this Jetboil knockoff. The Polaris has a regulated stove. I've never had a problem with mine. The pot support of the Polaris is much shorter, keeping your pot very close to the flame. I don't think their products are bad, but after owning some higher-end stoves, I won't go back to cheaper stuff unless I'm confident that it will perform well. Anyone looking for a less expensive Jetboil alternative should look at the Bulin BL100-B15 stove and 1.5 liter pot combo. It has several video reviews here on RUclips. I just bought that setup and it is far better than the Firemaple. In the reviews of the Bulin system, people are boiling 1 liter of water in less than 2 minutes. It’s not a perfect system, but it’s half the cost of a jetboil, and it does boil faster and use less fuel. The lid needs a small handle on top to make it easier to remove when water gets to a boil.

      @Im_With_Stupid 8 месяцев назад +1

      It's a crude measure of fuel efficiency. The longer it takes to boil water, the more fuel it's burning to do it. That's why people care about it. Thing is, these stoves are notoriously poor performers in cold weather, regardless of who makes them. It was pretty cold that day if his choice of clothing is any indication and his water was probably cold, too, so a boil test in those conditions isn't going to match the factory test that's done in ideal conditions. He really ought to take it in the house and let it warm up and not try to boil ice cold water with it. The results will probably be much better.

    Hey Luke, I have the X3 and I really have not had any issues with it. The pot stand works great with their non stick skillet and I have made many meals that way. The fact that they include the pot stand is great because that is a separate purchase from Jetboil. I had many issues with the Jetboil stash that is why I sought this one out. I actually burned the top of my hand with the stash due to its lid coming off during a pour. Also, the boil times are subjective in my opinion because some folks don’t mind to wait. Again these, are just my opinions but you did ask us to comment. I am not saying this one is the best in the world, but I think I have lower expectations about it. LOL

    I’m a little confused. Stay away from them, why? It boils water and the pot stand would work well for a camp skillet. Does it boil water in 1.5 minutes? No.
    But, neither does the wood burning collapsible stove I have.
    Mainly, if you’re looking it to work in the blink of an eye, you’re going to be disappointed. But, if you’re realistic about it taking a few minutes to raise cold water to a rolling boil, you should be just fine.
    Materials and workmanship are all well within normal range of functioning for a backpack unit here.
    At some point, we’re going to have to learn to temper our expectations a little bit.

    My brother and I both have a jet oil flash and they both took closer to what that maple fire took first thing in the morning in western Wyoming this weekend so roughly the same temps as what you experienced wherever you’re at.
    Even when I was in the field for army training in Alaska I never once thought “damn, I wish this boiled water 3.2 minutes faster.”
    Those differences are negligible especially at those price points. If you’re complaining about a couple of minutes, you’re too bougie to be camping/backpacking in the first place. If you’re in dire straits, chances are you’ve already shed the pack this was included in and if you didn’t, you’re not complaining about the 3-4 minutes it takes to boil water. So you mentioning those negligible differences and then saying you’re “100% agenda free.” Leads me to believe otherwise. Once my jetboil flash runs its course, I’d definitely save the 100+ dollars for the maple fire. With or without the added accessories.

    I’ve got the same one and I have no problems boiling water in a reasonable time. It takes about 20 to 30 seconds longer than my buddy’s jetboil. With the huge price difference for me that’s a “win”. Also why would you use a kettle to boil water when you have the pot ? In my opinion the pot stand is for use with a frying pan in which it works very well. I think you struck out with this review. I would have liked to see a side by side comparison with a jetboil using the same fuel before saying don’t buy this stove. Just saying the jetboil is way better doesn’t cut it. Your channel is a gear review channel you should take the time to do it right.

    I know this is old, but those baffles…I don’t think it matters too much how close to the middle they get. They aren’t really there to evenly disperse all heat. It’s just for the outside of the pot. When you have a flame under a pot, the heat is forced to the sides of the pot and then escapes. This can also make reaching over your pot dangerous, because intense heat from the flame can climb up the outside of the pot from underneath. These baffles catch that flame and heat, preventing it from climbing the outside walls of the pot, and redirect that energy back into the bottom of the pot. Since you have less heat loss from the bottom, water boils in a fraction of the time. I use just use an MSR pocket rocket, and a pot with the baffles on the bottom. I can boil 2 cups of water in less than 60 seconds

I was able to save that money and use it elsewhere in my gear setup rather than buy name brand just because it's name brand. I have tested and used a jetboil as well, not sure which one, and I like it but it's not worth the extra $100 at all. I commented once already, but actually tested my Fire Maple just a short hour ago outside at 32 degrees F. Boiled two cups water for instant coffee which comes to 12oz in just under two minutes, close enough to say two minutes. Just cold, not as windy as when you tested yours. Then boiled two cups water at 16oz for some noodles. That did take longer at 2.5 to 3 minutes, and in the short time seen the fuel was already being effected by the temperature. I'm sure it's not the best, but the best for what I need. Good review giving someone something to think about. Look forward to more reviews, and some Winter camping ones since I find I hate the cold. After seeing the comments from owners of this stove, I would certainly own one. Due to wider reactions rather than this apparent review. Objectively, no reason why jet boil should be so expensive, when the fire maple has more to it and presumably also makes a profit. Both manufactured in China. Whilst you may not be able to use pure propane, expect you could use an isobutane propane blend, as per jet boil and most camping gas supplies. This has a higher calorific value than isobutane alone.

    Reading numerous comments about boil time I decided to put this in perspective for what I do each day, boil water for tea. So, on the kitchen stove using my normal stainless steel pan which fits the small burner added sixteen ounces of fresh 53 degree tap water, turned burner to high. Boil time to 212 degrees was 5:08. Next the microwave, glass bowl, fresh 53 degree tap water, boil time 4:15. So, to me the FireMaple is okay.
    Many mention fuel usage. Yes longer boil times may increase fuel usage, more fuel usage equals more expense. There is another factor, burner efficiency. We have all seen videos where one burner's boil time was longer than another, yet its fuel usage was less and vis versa. Okay, run a burner efficiency test, begin by weighing the canister, boil water, make sure to use a timer and thermometer. When it reaches boil again weigh the canister. The difference in canister weight will show how much fuel was used, the efficiency of burner. Otherwise this fuel usage and boil time conundrum is nothing more than saber-rattling stirring up the community with much ado about nothing, thus a moot point. Truly, I never saw a hiker get their bobs in a wad over boil time, reviewers only, hum.
    Do recall as we go up in altitude the boil time becomes shorter and boil temperature is decreased as well. Example, boil temperatures at sea level temp. would be 212F, 5,000 feet temp. 202 degrees, 10,000 feet 193 degrees. Also, as we go up in altitude and the temperature drops many butane cannisters will not work and isobutane canisters can become less efficient as well. Boiling point of butane is -2 degrees Celsius, (28.4 Fahrenheit) below that it cannot out-gas. Isobutane boiling point is -22.7 Celsius (10.94 Fahrenheit) is better than butane. Compare them to boiling temperature of propane is -42.04 Celsius (-43.672 Fahrenheit). Gasoline and the like will have a boil temperature -129 Celsius (-200 Fahrenheit). Thus in cold and higher altitudes I prefer a gasoline (as my Coleman 533) or propane burner.

    If you want to do a real test, start with ice cubes. That way EVERY test has the same starting point. No ice is colder than any other ice unless you are using ice for scientific experiments. A full container of ice on a measured amount of gas. Time that and get true results...if it even matters to you.

    I have this stove and I've been satisfied with the performance as a "chimney-style" system like Jet Boil. While I haven't timed the boil time, it has been faster than my MSR Pocket Rocket; probably due to the efficiency. I haven't used it with a standard pot/pan and the separate stand. For my camping, I still think it was a good deal at $58.

    Isobutane canisters aren't cheap, and having to take multiple canisters on an adventure when you shouldnt have to isnt cool. It takes up space and adds weight to your pack. Put it another way, if you buy a car that gets 300 miles to the tank and after find it only gets 200, you're not going to be a happy camper. If im going to spend serious money just to boil water, I want want im paying for. Thats the point of this video. Thanks Luke and Susie . You're video's continue to be informative and inspirational.

    this guy may not know why people buying knockoffs for cheaper price. Or he just want a precise racing gear to fulfill water boil racing spirit, not an affordable camping gear...

    I've been using the Firemaple x2 for 3 years and I've had absolutely no issues with it. I've used with pans, pots, and different temperatures. I'd buy it 10 times over before dumping money into jetboils overpriced stoves. I love my firemaple!

    I have the x3. Totally worth it. I would never pay for a jet boil and there's nothing in the market that give you this form factor.
    I am very happy with the boiling time, whatever the btu rating is on the x3 or the jetboil.
    If seems like you missed the point with price point. It makes it worth it for most people.

    I've been warned? About an under-performing stove? Your taglines are increasingly over-dramatic and under-delivered. In particular your taglines suggesting extreme weather are over-stated and downright silly compared to the extreme conditions handled (without drama) on other YT channels I appreciate your unbiased gear reviews and the fact that you have no sponsors - that carries a lot of weight. But you need to tone down your over-dramatic taglines and perhaps browse other YT camping-related channels dealing with real weather extremes to keep your weather descriptions in check.

    Just an idea, in order to verify a possible problem with the components , but i don't know how possible is it - due to compatibility ... :
    1 Take the pot from FM X2 and use it on a jet-boil stove - see if there is a "pot" problem....
    2 Take a jet-boil pot and use it over the FM X2 stove - to see if it's a stove problem

    The Fire Maple Star X2 has more than one flaw. The other, more concerning and deadly flaw is the threading is not 100% true to the Isobutane canisters. The threading almost feels as though you are cross threading the burner into the canister. As a result, the value is actually compromised and causes the fuel tank to leak after you disassemble the burner from the fuel tank. I know this from experience. I actually wrote a review about it and then Fire Maple sent me another one in hopes to get the review removed. The problem still existed. Check for yourself. Luckily the foreign gas was detected in my camper and the alarms went off. Ever since that, I stopped trusting Fire Maple gas stoves. My life is more important than saving a few bucks.
    On a side note, I'm pleased to see how honest your reviews have been. I say this because I've also seen your praises to this company at times too.
    Keep up the good, honest work! It's the best way to sleep at night.

    Hey Luke, what’s the rationale behind being disappointed in a name brand product, then buying a cheaper imitation of the same product? Personally, I would think to try a different stove design for my needs after being disappointed.. just thinking out loud

    Hi! I own this X2 system. At a temperature of 7 ° C, it took an average of 6 minutes to boil 1 liter. I consider this indicator acceptable, because I bought the system because of the high stability of the burner on unstable surfaces. For me, this is the most important criterion.

    I have a fixed star 2, it takes just under 2 minutes to boil. I’m saving $100 so I’ll deal with any flaws. I have a review on my channel but there are plenty of honest reviews

    I can’t say what’s wrong in this video - either the burner is broken, or the author is inadequate... I myself and several of my close friends have been using the X2 system for several years. There were no negative reviews about it. For its price, this system gives excellent results. It’s unpleasant to see such a biased review claiming to be an expert opinion!!!
