Thank you. This is a very good jumping off point for figuring out what is what. I took apart a sweater once, just because, and ended up throwing it all away because it was small and I didn't know there would be anything I could do with it. I now wish I had it back. I should have liked to do the testing you mentioned to guess at its weight/size/usefulness. Darn it.

I got a load of #4 yarns on sale and have not been happy with anything I made -- now I realize that I am probably a #1 or #2 person.

I liked this topic - good graphics on the weight chart and so on WPI measure. What was good info for me was considering the number of ounces and yardage in each yarn to figure out if you could make a substitution. Next time maybe you can do a closeup of yarns together to see some physical differences in the weight classes.
I have been crocheting for @4 years and I have difficulty selecting the right yarn. I have found that the feel of a skein of yarn is often different once made up into a project. Other than Bernat baby yarn, I am often disappointed with my project. I have asked more experienced crocheters and no one can explain why. Can you offer any advice?
That's interesting (and sad that you are disappointed with your projects). My gut says it's probably a tension/gauge problem, but it would help to know a little more and maybe see some pictures. What yarns have you tried that you are unhappy with? What size hook do you use with the Bernat baby yarn? Are you changing to an appropriately sized hook for different yarns? Do you like them better after blocking or washing/drying? I must say I get it now, my question is why don't people just call them what they are? Example I was listening to this gal talk about a baby hat and to use a DK worsted weight yarn what dose that mean ,a # 4 or # 3 ? Maybe it's terminology?
