This was really useful, I just completely reversed engineered the entire concept of pellet grill smokers thanks to this video, they can easily be implemented into offset smokers for $100 or less.
My only concern about these is because there isn't direct heat from an open flame (like with propane or charcoal) I feel like it would be impossible to get that char or flame-broiled crust on meats. Because with the grease tray and shield thing covering the heat source, wouldn't this just be like putting your meat into a smokey oven?
Thanks for watching! Although some manufacturers market being able to direct sear over open flame it typically is a small direct flame zone. I have done cast iron seared burgers and steak with cast iron getting up to 6-700 degrees by removing flame yammer and grease tray. Pellet Smokers excel the best at low and slow with smoke
Thanks for the video. I've been trying to learn how the heat is generated. Is it coming from the pellets or the hot rod? It seems like the blowing air is what's causing the pellets to burn faster which would generate more heat. I'm planning to try out pellets with a propane burner and a cast iron pot added into my firebox but I'm not sure it'll be the same effect as much of the heat would come from the burner.
I am also happy to report that Academy Sports finally got the shipment of the B&B Championship blend in that I’ve been wanting to try! Blend of Pecan, Cherry & Oak, 40lbs for $20. 😃. I’m a newbie, as I just bought a Trail Embers pellet grill from Tractor Supply over the Labor Day holiday. I’ve tried oak and hickory, and I love them both. This pellet grill makes grilling fun again!!
Joanna W Congrats on the Pellet Grill Joanna! The Sams Club version is the same one here’s video of it. I did some other videos and modifications videos also ruclips.net/video/2NQNcMWIMXw/видео.html
Thanks for Watching John! Good question! The holes are for the searing option on the pellet grill, the slots/holes are intended for flames to come thru for searing which it does directly above the 4” fire pot, no where else. Covering for low and slow just help make clean up easier
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ you're a good man Tom. I used my first time today was pretty successful. I did Flame Out because the the auger went empty. Do you have a mod that keeps the pellets from stacking up in the sides of the fill box?
Thanks for the kind words! Wow! Never had that issue, not sure why that would happen especially with the vertical sides. Others have said that Pellet choice mars a difference but I’m not so sure about that
Thanks for Watching! The ash stays in the burn pot, and you vacum it out about every other cook. Some grills like the camp chef has a door that slides and the ash falls into a metal cup for disposal
This is good stuff! I thought I knew the basics, but this is a little more in depth.
Thanks for Watching Antonio!

Thanks for Watching! I’d love to see that!
Great presentation! Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for watching Brian! The hot rod just ignites the pellets, the blower keeps them going. Good luck with your idea!
Cool vid, very informative!
Question, are the pellets expensive, and do you have to buy them specific to the brand of grill?
No you dont but ive heard quality of pellets vary
I get a 20lb bag of B&B oak pellets at Academy Sports for $13. 👍
Any pellet will work

the grate you covered in foil has vents but they are now covered by the foil, is this a problem?

What is the fuel for the pellet side? Electric or gas?
Huh... it’s wood pellets. Thanks for watching!
Tom Horsman what is the fuel source to start the pellets on fire? Electric or gas flame?
Ok, no I understand... it’s an electric hot rod. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Tom...
Yimmy T Thanks for Watching Yimmy!
Does the auger ever get clogged?
Thanks for Watching! Good question, I’ve not had an auger jam on any of the pellet grills I’ve owned
Thank you.
Where does the ash go?
Thanks for Watching! The ash stays in the burn pot, and you vacum it out about every other cook. Some grills like the camp chef has a door that slides and the ash falls into a metal cup for disposal
So the grills are powered by electricity?
Thanks for Watching Daniel, Yes
They don't want you to be able to fix it they want you to buy a new one but if I can't take it apart I'm not buying it
Thanks for watching Tony! I agree
Great video and great device but if you ask me these kind of grill are overrated. For me a charcoal is more than enough
juvenille2001 Thanks for Watching!
