They have back sprites, jump and fall animations, and even react to stuff like Mario now. Not just them, even the NPCs and background characters have new animations and sprites too. I love the new polishes, I cannot wait for this game when it eventually comes out!
I'm shocked that they didn't "update" the enemies to look like they did in the modern New Super Mario style and instead actually held on to the appearance they had in the older Paper Mario games unlike when Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga came out on 3DS a couple years ago and all the original, cooky, and unique looking characters were replaced with traditional Toads / Koopa Troops, I'm happy kept the distinctive Paper Mario style was kept.
I really hope they do an additional short campaign with Luigi and what he was doing during the events of the game. It's unlikely they'll do that, but it would make a lot of people very happy.
Or at the very least add some visual scenes detailing his Super Luigi Book series. I wanna know what Princess Eclair looks like as a character and the Chestnut King.
Dude, I love how there's the _slightest_ hint of a white outline around the black of the sprites, and actually line-weighted! It's like it's there to suggest a bit of backlight bleeding around the edges of the paper, adding a little sense of depth to the cutouts along with the new lighting. Looks so much better than the obnoxiously thick double-outlined sticker look of the past few games! Like, I got where they were going for with Sticker Star (it's in the name), but Color Splash and Origami King just didn't need that. This is a very happy medium. 👌
@@Quogle Wait, what? My memory must be fucky. But I usually try not to think about Sticker Star too much, figures. 🙄 Oh wow, you're right! That's... pretty wild.
It's hard not to cry, since I've been waiting for this EXACT remake of Paper Mario TTYD (how it looks and stuff) to finally play TTYD (since I was 11-12 years old!). I've been hoping to see it since I've started watching Nintendo Directs (which is around 3 years now). Also the scene inside the Mario bros.'s house looks so good!!
I LOVE that they kept the style and tone of TTYD, which is the best looking Paper Mario game, while also enhancing and upgrading it and adding a little bit of different aesthetics that somewhat resembles TOK but not too much. Still feels like style of a pop up book.
Even though I was against a remake due to the potential changes in the visual style, I actually agree. I’d say that based SOLELY off of the one trailer, I think the new one might be better overall, but the original has some things that look better (like at 0:17).
Wow it looks amazing. SImply one of the greatest games ever made. I actually put it #1 on greatest GCN games over Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, and Melee... and those were all fantastic obviously.
WOWWWW Okay, I'll admit, I've never played this game before. My reaction to this game was "Cool! People are definitely happy ^^" Seeing this side by side, MY GOD THEY DID WORK. Even simple scenes like the grass scene at 0:28. The paper aesthetic no longer holds anything back, it only accentuates the beauty and the craft of the environment more. The way the ground curls up at the edges, the blades of grass being 2d, The tree having a panorama sort of feel to it instead of flat. I'm amazed that this much work was put into all these tiny details. Well done to the team who made this. I'm hecka more excited now.
Very well said! Origami King was masterful in the realization of the papercraft aesthetic, and I love that they could bring it to TTYD while staying so true to TTYD's distinct designs and artstyle. Super duper recommend the game btw. I'm not even into turn-based RPGs and I thought it was a blast!
I love that the artsyle is a mixture between new and old. Also, is it me or do the characters have that carboard effect detail? If so, then it looks really cool!
Quick list of notable comparison points: - Snappier transitions, as seen in the Peach tile flips at the end. - Vibrancy changes to some environments (example, grass looks significantly less extreme Green green and more soft green) as well as minor prop/detail changes to accompany this (like less flowers and grass tufts in the green fields). - New sprites included for partners and other notable characters such as Bowser! Also minor shading and lighting differences on these and other sprites to give more dimension (see Hooktail's excellent lighting). - New NPCs or otherwise gussied-up NPCs to match the unique aesthetics! (See Glitz Pit purple toad) - Battle transition in music got a dynamic speed shift. - Commitment to the paper pop-up book stylization (examples, railing thickness differences on Mario's house, trees getting the crossover-paper pop technique, and the title screen popout fold). All in all, it looks wonderful and so much fun! Even side by side they both look so beautiful.
This game brings tears to my eyes. Still one of the top 10 games I consider in my life and even only beat it once. My 9 year old told him about it for so long, while hard to find a copy. So I am so happy able to finally show him the game.

I found out some of the dialogues had changed! 0:25 - Goombella says about that she's a junior at the University of Goom other than being a student. 1:27 - Bowser says "Lunkhead" instead of saying "Airhead".
The side-by-side comparison really highlights just how more expressive characters are in the remake compared to the original, and I find that pretty neat.
no complaints so far, except for the 30 fps and sometimes there are to many reflections on surfaces where they dont belong, look at the carpet in marios house, the same reflection as the normal wooden floor, they have to tone it down in a few areas to fit the surface (earth, grass etc.).
It's so clean and shiny, like literally scrubbing the GCN version with soap and water. And they added more detail to the environments. I'm so glad they put effort into this remake. So many memories.
Honestly, the switch has quite with a facelift. The lighting received an upgrade, the dialogue is changed to whose keeping, Characters now have speaking sounds. Even the battle starts, the enemies run on screen while the audience runs into their seats and when you performance a superguard, the word "Superguard" is shown instead of "Nice".
Dang. The team did a great job tightening up the animation, camera work, and graphic design with what they've learned over the years. I hope we get a "4K" version on Switch 2!
I say it’s very nice that with the enemies like the Goomba’s and Boo’s, they didn’t redesign to have them look like as they have in the Paper Mario games since Sticker Star, they kept them how they were in the original Thousand-Year Door.
I love how it perfectly blends the comic book aesthetic with the paper cutout aesthetic. It looks gorgeous. I hope this is how the Paper Mario series carries on in the future.
Y’all are going to call me weird, morbid, whatever. I’m just really happy that they didn’t remove the gallows from Rogueport. I know that’s a really bad thing to be excited about, but it added to the aesthetic of Rogueport. so many of the locations in thousand year door have such a very unique personality to them, personalities we don’t normally get in a Mario game of all things. And Rogueport having a gallows was part of that so I’m really glad Nintendo didn’t remove it, even in this “politically correct” world we live in where one person getting offended by something is enough to get someone canceled. I honestly can’t WAIT for this!
One thing to note is that several characters have now been animated from the back. Previously it was only Mario and Peach who turned their back against the camera when walking, but now more characters can turn their back to the camera, like Gombella, Professor Frankly and Bowser
You guys know what this all must mean? ! It’s highly possible for the other Paper Mario games that came after TTYD to also get the remaster treatment in later futures! From “Super Paper Mario” (Wii) to “Color Splash” (Wii U)! I don’t know about Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS) though.
I am curious how Super Paper Mario would look in this artstyle. I feel like it would be particularly hard to "paperify" while maintaining the original feel.
The original GC version doesn’t look bad at all. If they would of just ported it over, added widescreen support, and increased the resolution it would still looked fantastic. The fact that they went the extra mile shows they really care about this game.
The one issue I have with this is the obsession modern game devs have with making the text tiny. Just compare the text between two screens. The text on then Gamecube version is large enough to read from across the room, while the switch has very small letters. I have very bad eyesight, so small text is a huge deal breaker for me. I really hope this is just an issue with the formatting of RUclips videos, but seeing how this has been a problem for many recent games, I doubt it.
I have noticed that devs seem to think something being higher resolution means they can make the text smaller. Uh, no? We need it BIGGER! My eyes can't handle this!
@@Enaronia Larger, higher res, and with better color range. The text was only so large in the original out of necessity. It's also why particle effects in remakes are often toned down, they were bigger so you could actually see them clearly on older displays.
I just hope they fix all the backtracking in that game. ESPECIALLY the General White questline. For those who remember and know what im talking about, you have to go through the ENTIRE game's map TWICE just to find that stupid Bob-omb. And that's not all, they need to fix the trouble center quests too bc that also has you going everywhere for alot of people INCLUDING General White making that over 3 times I went through the ENTIRE games map to find him not counting the other trouble center side quests.
@@BlaizeTheDragon But the amount of warp pipes is the about the same? What they should do is decrease the amount of locations you revisit at the very least, or change that entire section. The snowy location was short lived.
@@Lukandon No, the first game let you fast travel to every village whereas TTYD forgot to add one for glitzville (the biggest offender) and Fahr outpost. They can also add one that connects twilight town to creepy steeple (so once you go through the woods once, you can just use the pipe). They could also do with adding Super Paper Marios return pipe to ease the backtracking. I don't want them to remove parts. Just make it more convenient for the player.
@@BlaizeTheDragon But the Rogueport Sewers are right under Rogueport so getting to Glitzville shouldn't be that hard. A pipe to Fahr Outpost is a bit pointless as the pipe that leads there is only 3 areas away. I agree regarding Creepy Steeple though.
@@Lukandon In regards to glitzville you still have to sit through some canned animations and constantly have to show the cheepcheep your boarding pass. It just makes the treck more tedious. Fahr outpost would still be an opportunity to skip being mobbed by several highspeed frost piranhas. Ooff, I just noticed a small problem: At 1:04, you can see that it takes twice as long for the battle to start in the new version. Despite the new version looking better, this will definitively add up and significantly slow down the pace. I will still buy the game regardless, but it is something that should be noted.
One thing I'm actually going to miss is the backgrounds of all things. Don't get me wrong, the new art style is absolutely gorgeous, but the comic book feels the original style has kinda got lost in translation. I'm still super hyped about this
The original Thousand-Year Door still holds up as a timeless classic (and one of my favorite games of all time). Looking at it (the OG) though, the graphical limitations really show. But with the enhanced remake in mind, more expressions and modeling of the characters (besides Mario and Peach in the OG) are truly gonna blow it out of the water!
Wait a minute... In the remake mario has a painting with all his Partners from paper mario 1 in the house which does't exist in the original. Maybe that could be a hint that nintendo is also remaking the first game in the near future. (I know it's just a little detail in the trailer, but it can't be there without a reason right?) This thing is the ONLY new thing (aside from the griphical improvement of course and two little changes: a new sign at a door, new camera angle for the airship animation and the missing letter from peach in the intro. In fact the text is there, but the pinky letter itself isn't there)
I'm actually very glad they didn't continue with the "paper cutout" look that the characters had in Color Splash and Origami King, ditching those white outlines (I just wasn't a fan of that look anyway) and creating something more visually faithful to the original while still being stunning to look at. One of my favorite games of all time growing up has never looked more gorgeous. This is the time to be alive. 2024 can't come soon enough!

I think it's awesome that they're doing this, I hope this makes the original come down in price (it probably won't though) I actually prefer the original because of framerate and sound effects (I prefer the classic Paper Mario dialogue sounds over TOK's). However if there's a 60fps patch and an original audio mod, that'd be amazing.
One Thing That Stuck Out To Me Is At 0:40 There Is A New Toad On The Left That Isn't In The Original, I Wonder Does He Have A Purpose Or Are They Just Putting In More Background Characters?
Weird, looks like they knocked the framerate down to 30FPS instead of keeping it at TTYD's original FPS (60). To be fair, Oregano King has a hard time running on Switch hardware at 60, so if this is a recreation of TTYD using the OK engine, it makes sense that they could not bump the FPS any higher than 30, but still disappointing. Graphics look nice though.

Whats funny is that they didn't use that look in sticker star, the white outline was introduced in color splash
@@Quogle Wait, what? My memory must be fucky. But I usually try not to think about Sticker Star too much, figures. 🙄
Oh wow, you're right! That's... pretty wild.
Actually the first time they used the white outline was in Mario and Luigi Paper Jam interestingly enough.
@@seanimo8579Another Paper Jam fact: Bowser Jr and Paper Mario (sometimes) are the only paper characters with puppet animation.
Yeah the white lines do matter a big deal because there have been times where I missed jumping on foes due to lack of depth perception.
Bro same
I LOVE that they kept the style and tone of TTYD, which is the best looking Paper Mario game, while also enhancing and upgrading it and adding a little bit of different aesthetics that somewhat resembles TOK but not too much. Still feels like style of a pop up book.
I honestly don't know which style I prefer. The remaster is super polished, but the original has its own charm.
Even though I was against a remake due to the potential changes in the visual style, I actually agree. I’d say that based SOLELY off of the one trailer, I think the new one might be better overall, but the original has some things that look better (like at 0:17).
why I have an appreciation for both remakes and originals! 😄❤️
@@scottvgamer1163Eh, I'd actually disagree on your example personally.
@@ChaosLightspeed it’s mostly subjective anyway. I just think the text box looking like paper and the letter being shown on screen is more charming.
@@ChaosLightspeed eh, we can't all have good taste
Wow it looks amazing. SImply one of the greatest games ever made. I actually put it #1 on greatest GCN games over Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, and Melee... and those were all fantastic obviously.
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, Eternal Darkness, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Super Smash Bros Melee were my favorites on Gamecube.
WOWWWW
Okay, I'll admit, I've never played this game before. My reaction to this game was "Cool! People are definitely happy ^^"
Seeing this side by side, MY GOD THEY DID WORK.
@@matthewjones6786 I’ve well heard. Once this comes out, I’ll gladly check it out ^^
I love that the artsyle is a mixture between new and old. Also, is it me or do the characters have that carboard effect detail? If so, then it looks really cool!
Si efecto carton
Yeah, it looks like they're actually made of several pieces of paper which is cool
0:12 omg that small easy to miss picture on the shelf is beyond beautiful
Quick list of notable comparison points:
- Snappier transitions, as seen in the Peach tile flips at the end.
(See Glitz Pit purple toad)
- Battle transition in music got a dynamic speed shift.
- Commitment to the paper pop-up book stylization (examples, railing thickness differences on Mario's house, trees getting the crossover-paper pop technique, and the title screen popout fold).
All in all, it looks wonderful and so much fun! Even side by side they both look so beautiful.
The best part about the remake is they added a back-facing bowser sprite!
Edit: they added them for the partners, too!
Honestly the biggest thing I'm noticing is how much faster a lot of the animations are, like with the stairs. That's gonna be so nice.
left screen: how I remember the OG version!
right screen: what it really looks like!
This game brings tears to my eyes. Still one of the top 10 games I consider in my life and even only beat it once. My 9 year old told him about it for so long, while hard to find a copy. So I am so happy able to finally show him the game.
this is how you remaster. all non-Gamecube era players who were still babies then, can now enjoy in modern Switch and Switch 2
The Switch version is what I remember the GCN version looking like when I was a kid! If you’re the nostalgic type like I am, you know that this is a huge compliment :)
I’m having trouble with the bowser battle in the GameCube virsion
Not hating but yall have some horrible memory every time a remake gets announced
@@pokemonbattler2537 Try hitting him until he falls down. (There are several Bowser battles.)

@@WaffleCone927 A lot of people haven't played the games being remade in years, for a number of reasons. If you haven't played TTYD since 2004, of course your memory is going to be hazy and embellished.
I really like how they took OK's aesthetic and mixed it with TTYD. It looks even livelier than the original.
It’s hard to believe that this remake will come out nearly twenty years after the original was released. Man, how time flies…
I found out some of the dialogues had changed!
0:25 - Goombella says about that she's a junior at the University of Goom other than being a student.
1:27 - Bowser says "Lunkhead" instead of saying "Airhead".
I wonder if they retranslated it from japanese. If so, is Vivian being trans going to carry over?
1:42 I'm surprised that they did not get rid of the noose.
lunk head
(2:13) I like how they made computer's eye red, like in original Japanese version.
I LOVE them using a mix of the old artstyle and the newer more "paper" one!
You mean, instead of "Great"
The lighting can be a little hit or miss but the actual textures are gorgeous. I’m super excited.
Zess T also had a back sprite in the original
The models look crisp and the lighting effects are great, the 3D models do look more like folded paper and cardboard which really suits the art style.
I can’t wait for the remake to be released!
Let this game's sales give Nintendo a wake up call on what fans want for Paper Mario!
I don't know why, but I just love the idea of Luigi's talk just being his laugh
You guys know what this all must mean? ! It’s highly possible for the other Paper Mario games that came after TTYD to also get the remaster treatment in later futures! From “Super Paper Mario” (Wii) to “Color Splash” (Wii U)! I don’t know about Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS) though.
Isn’t Color Splash already in HD? I don’t think it really needs a remaster.
@@icecreamdf5259 Ok, well, Color Splash can get a port while the others get HD remakes
I am curious how Super Paper Mario would look in this artstyle. I feel like it would be particularly hard to "paperify" while maintaining the original feel.
Take all the nostalgia and love for the first two Paper Mario titles and remove their soul. You get Color Splash
@@matthewjones6786 I’m sure they’ll come up with ways to make it look great for whenever this remake comes true
1:26 Did they not use the word Airhead again because they're afraid of the candy suing them? Weird change
I think it’s because it’s a harsh word? Idk
@@MusuemBucket it's because they retranslated it from japanese
The original GC version doesn’t look bad at all. If they would of just ported it over, added widescreen support, and increased the resolution it would still looked fantastic. The fact that they went the extra mile shows they really care about this game.
Why at 1:43 is the mayor's house being entered instead of the store in the half-scale comparison?
The one issue I have with this is the obsession modern game devs have with making the text tiny. Just compare the text between two screens. The text on then Gamecube version is large enough to read from across the room, while the switch has very small letters. I have very bad eyesight, so small text is a huge deal breaker for me. I really hope this is just an issue with the formatting of RUclips videos, but seeing how this has been a problem for many recent games, I doubt it.
I have noticed that devs seem to think something being higher resolution means they can make the text smaller. Uh, no? We need it BIGGER! My eyes can't handle this!
I think part of it is that the average TV is larger now.
It's such an easy fix too. Just have more warp pipes like the first game.
Plus it would mean that during the general white backtrack hunt you can just pipe hop meaning a lot less screen transitions overall.
i just want the og text noises back other than that its perfect
Ooff, I just noticed a small problem: At 1:04, you can see that it takes twice as long for the battle to start in the new version. Despite the new version looking better, this will definitively add up and significantly slow down the pace. I will still buy the game regardless, but it is something that should be noted.
One thing I'm actually going to miss is the backgrounds of all things. Don't get me wrong, the new art style is absolutely gorgeous, but the comic book feels the original style has kinda got lost in translation. I'm still super hyped about this
I wonder how many people will be seeing toadsworth for the first time
1:27 Was "Airhead" considered too offensive to be removed from the remake?
It might have been a copyright thing, tbh.
@@TornaitSuperBirdI doubt it, as the Mario Wiki says it was removed for its offensive context.
As someone who never played the original I thought it was basically a hd version, now I see they actually remade it from the ground up. Wow can't wait
They struck a really nice balance between the old artstyle and new artstyle with this remake.
I really hope there's an option to make the font size bigger
NOW THIS is the aesthetic Paper Mario is supposed to have. Paper like a pop-up book, but without everything being arts & crafts themed.
was it just me or did GCN look a lot smoother ?
Framerate difference, probably because the Switch mostly runs games at 30
Wait a minute... In fact the text is there, but the pinky letter itself isn't there)
I'm loving the updated soundtrack
I'm actually very glad they didn't continue with the "paper cutout" look that the characters had in Color Splash and Origami King, ditching those white outlines (I just wasn't a fan of that look anyway) and creating something more visually faithful to the original while still being stunning to look at. One of my favorite games of all time growing up has never looked more gorgeous. This is the time to be alive. 2024 can't come soon enough!
its like a weird mix between the modern style and the old style and idk how i feel about that but they do seem to lean more towards the old style so thats good ig
You may wanna get your eyes checked.. They still have white outlines.
@@imkidfridayThey’re much thinner than the other games mentioned though.
@@imkidfriday It's more like paper thickness, it's more noticeable under certain lighting.

I’ve heard great things about this game and everything. I’m excited to begin this experience in an even better enhanced way!
it somehow adds tons more lighting, depth, emotion, animation, and character. this has to be the best way this could have turned out.

The guy in charge of the dialog was once called an airhead and it hurt their feelings, so they censored it to "lunkhead," whatever that means.

Aw man, it's just about everything I could ask out of a remaster, aesthetically speaking. Origami King is actually my favorite PM, and I love seeing its _gorgeous_ papercraft detail here without sacrificing TTYD's artstyle and designs!

The painting was also changed to the map from the first game
did you notice in the trailer the amount of reflections the game itself had. with all the leaks that the switch 2 next year and it having rtx 3080 graphics. wouldnt be surprised if it came out with the switch 2 with some sort of rtx stuff in it. even origami kingdom doesnt have that amount of reflections. and imma just say it out there. the buttons of A/B and the L/R look kinda different. almost as if theyre different buttons of a different console

Didn't realize they recreated all the assets, thought it was just a port in HD or something. Kinda makes me wanna play it now.
Wonder if they will add anything new like NPCs etc?
Its so beautiful! Still holds up to this day as one of my all-time favorite games. I am super excited to replay it! :D
Seems that the remake runs at only 30 fps whereas the original is 60. Honestly I'd sacrifice some graphical quality if it meant they could push 60.
This is going to sound wierd out of context but I'm so glad they kept the nose in the remaster.
I guess this begs the question, but what’s really stopping someone from grabbing their original copy and playing an emulated upscaled version if everything aged so well. Besides new animations and better textures, I don’t see a point in buying unless you’re new to the series or a nostalgia dude
If you emulate you have access to higher resolution texture packs as well.
i'd rather drop $60 instead of waiting 10 more years for the texture pack to finally get finished
