    For the lightsabers, you can clearly tell they're a plastic blade with lights under them. They look terrible in daylight, hence why a majority of scenes from more recent shows (obi wan, Ahsoka) are shot in nighttime scenes.
    In either lighting environment, while I think the practical lighting looks great, they really need to CGI them to make them look like prequel/OT blades, they need to look like a "beam of light" not an "illuminated plastic blade" imo

    • @daisyblossomflowerchild9702
      @daisyblossomflowerchild9702 Месяц назад +6

      I agree with you about the current lightsabers looking like tubes with lights inside.
      In the OT, and I believe in the PT as well, when a lightsaber fight was shot, the actors used white plastic blades so they could see where the saber was irl and to feel when they clashed. The beautiful colours were added by ILM in post. If the modern actors need to see the colour of their blade, to channel their inner Sith or Jedi, give them the appropriate colour plastic blade and add the same lightsaber effects from the OT in post. At 22.5m an episode and with not all episodes containing lit lightsabers, I'm sure the budget could have been found to do the lightsaber CGI in post again.

      @@daisyblossomflowerchild9702 I totally get that "were used to the way they looked" and that's a potential bias. I honestly DO like the way we see the practical light, either on the actor or in the environment from the new sabers.
      But the vfx from PT/OT, even though we saw reflections of the sabers on say like, the floor in naboo, but not exactly the "real world lighting" from the new sabers, made them feel... Magical? Like, they weren't just beams of light the way they feel now.
      The hazy look of the vfx / PT / OT sabers was honestly perfect, so I'd be absolutely in favor of them using the current sabers to get the practical lighting, but editing them in post to make them look more like how they were before "practical sabers" were invented.

    • @daisyblossomflowerchild9702
      @daisyblossomflowerchild9702 Месяц назад +1

      @Brewsy92 Brilliant. I love your idea of combining the current practical sabers for lighting effects on the actors and then adding the CGI fx of the OG lightsabers. You are correct that seeing the colourful lights of each saber reflected on physical objects or characters does enhance scenes.
      I acknowledge my bias. I saw Luke ignite his father's lightsaber while watching Star Wars as a teenager in the theater with dad in 1977. I'm old and a bit set in ways at times. However, I can acknowledge when a new way of doing things would produce a superior outcome. :)

      @IStillJustLikeCats Месяц назад +1

      This stuff that was done in this one season easily could have been fleshed out into three seasons, or at least two and a half and then add more to the story. Flesh out the flashback episodes for season 1 and end it with Sol starting Osha's training. Season two starts off with Osha having left, and build up and flesh out the other characters and the setting for an episode or two before introducing the murder subplot and also illustrate the council having its problems with the senate as well. Season three fleshes out the rest of the story and gets us to a satisfactory conclusion where everything gets wrapped up nicely. You can also bypass any prequel issues by not including anyone from those movies and also setting it way far away of the outskirts of where the Jedi are prominent in the galaxy. Everything gets hushed because the problem was taken cared of and solved in a satisfactory way in which the Jedi are still needed to watch over things and this further proves it. They just stay away from that area because at the end of the day, things happened because of miscommunication and what not and there being no need for them to be there anymore.

    I think Basil sabotaged the ship because he sensed Sol's actual feelings in the moment and that he was going to try and kill Mae. However, it was not conveyed well at all, just like many things in the Acolyte, and actually made no sense. Why would Sol suddenly feel the need to kill her? Why would his character ever feel the need to kill someone who was not a physical threat to himself or others in his group? Had she said that she was going to go and kill Osha, then okay...maybe then it would have been a justified thing to do. But it made zero sense in the context they put it in. Sol in the last two episodes became some hyper emotional, ultra selfish, blubbering fool who was completely engulfed in self pity. Made zero sense. I liked his character until they completely changed his character in the end to fit their narrative of Jedi bad.

It’s more than double the work to have one person portray two characters that interact, which would have severely cut how much filming they could do in a single day with a child and thus extended out the time they would have to spend on principal shooting.
      Plus needing at least one physically similar stand-in for the behind-the-back camera angles.
      Of all the production problems in this show, this is the most easily understood and least important.

    now with the acolyte, star wars has finally reached the abysmal depths of star trek discovery, which came out about 7 years ago. in retrospect, this was only a question of time. i think it takes a VERY special kind of stupid to fail in such a way. i thought i was hardened by STDis, but such impudence still hurts badly. i once loved both franchises.

    We usually get subtitles when it's a key plot point and the POV character understands the alien even if he/she's not speaking it himself/herself. If there's no real POV character present and they're setting up a scene with a bit of dialogue they'll give subtitles. It's when one or more POV characters are present who don't understand the alien that we usually don't get subtitles. Or if there's someone there to translate the gist for the POV character(s) then we also don't tend to get subtitles either but we find out what was said when the POV characters do.
    I'm sure there's been exceptions to all of that but that tends to be the trend from my observation.

I get Sol betrayed her and it pushed her to the Dark Side, but that doesn't mean she's obligated to go with Qimir who is a murderer. Just run off with your sister? If she was basically sacrificing herself to free Mae from Qimir, then why is Mae okay with Osha being left with him while her memory gets wiped? Why is Osha okay with Mae's memory getting wiped and being captured by the Jedi? Why is she getting romantically involved with a monster just because she felt betrayed by Sol?! Wild

    Excellent recap and review! I really enjoy hearing what you two have to say about this show.
    I think the scene where Mae is willingly left behind makes more sense if you look at it the way the writers apparently do. For them suffering (or oppression by another) equals morality. The more oppressed you are, the more moral and worthwhile you become.
    Up to now the assumption is that Mae is the more oppressed one, because she lost her family and had to survive as an orphan before falling into the hands of Qimir. But in this episode we learn (or I think we're supposed to learn) that Osha is the more oppressed one, since she had to live trapped within Sol's lies. That scene where she goes all red-lightsaber and chokes Sol to death is supposed to be read as justified rage, where Osha finally connects with the anger inside of her instead of trying to suppress it. Mae sees how much her twin is suffering and concludes that Osha deserves a second chance more than she does, so she volunteers to be memory wiped and left behind.

    Another unanswered question -- it looks like Qimir's helmet is 'home made' and not equipped with any electronics, so how did he modulate his voice? There were so many stupid plot decisions. The end decision by Mae to allow her memory to be wiped and then get arrested by the Jedi had to be the stupidest thing I ever saw. Why? Was she afraid she'd get into a Menage a trois with her sister and Qimir? That would certainly be darkside! Osha wants to be trained by Qimir but would that really even be necessary as she was trained by the Jedi and she already had the Force choke thing down pat. Hell, just use your Jedi moves but 'put some feeling into it' and let your anger and rage flow through your moves. I'm sure she would be awesome as all female force users in SW, even those never formally trained yet (like Rey in TFA) are skilled and powerful fighters.

    The gopher helping Mae made no sense at all and they really did Sol dirty by killing him like that and then Venestra framing him for the murders. That's something a Sith would do..
    As someone said in another video, he sees the Jedi in The Prequels as flawed but still good. Here they are incompetent douchebags.
    And just so many unanswered questions. Headland confirmed the birthmother survived but you don't show her at all?

      For any who don't recall, random Jedi toss him a loaner green saber in the Geonosis pit. Shouldn't that immediately turn blue for Anakin?
      Later v Dooku, Kenobi tosses him his saber and Ani begins dual wielding, one green one blue, but again how does this happen? They should both be blue if his spirit color is blue.
