Awesome!! What you said about focusing on the number of hours instead of the level of fluency is really helpful. In such a way, every single hour you put into your language learning brings you closer to your goal. Really awesome. I personally don't set language learning goals. I just have one big goal. To reach a level where, I don't have to take language classes anymore. I love your afro by the way. You are the true "Afrolinguo" haha. I should have used your picture as my avatar lol.
Hi Shane, I think this is great advice. I am an amateur musician, and I take my music very seriously, so I practice “deliberately” AND I keep track of my practice time. I am serious about improving my Spanish too, but I have been much more casual about it and as a result I think I just haven’t been putting in the time. It has to be quality time of course. Anyway, you have inspired my to track my hours, and hopefully, to take my Spanish to the next level. Thanks!
Absolutely. I often hear that peolpe learn langauge in 30 days, but it is important to see not the day but the hours. If you compare this people invest 200 hours in a month :) so it's the same as other in a year or more :)
Hi Shane - great video. What advice would you give to keep me completely focused on "input" when learning Spanish as my mind keeps wandering and I have to rewind/relearn? John
I think it's natural for that to happen sometimes honestly, but the best advice I could give you is to try and focus on the type of content that you love and would usually consume in your native language, I've personally found that focusing on stuff I enjoy makes it easier to rewind and re watch if my mind does wander
I love the idea of being able to see how much I learn/immerse, but tracking never seems to work when I try it. There‘s too much gray area that might count as immersion/studying and might not, too many situations where I spontaneously start without thinking about starting a timer, too much „just a single video“ where I switch between spanish and english videos and can‘t keep track of what actually counts towards my time and what doesn‘t. 😅🤷🏼♀️ I tried tracking for several areas of life, and with different methods, but I never stick with it.
It’s definitely something you have yo make work for you. I just round down the time for video content (ie an episode that is 40-50mins long will go in my tracker as 30 minutes, then with podcasts and audiobooks it’s pretty easy. Obviously I can’t know exactly how much time I spent to the second but I think that’s not really the point in a lot of ways, it’s just a ways for me to track the time I spend engaging with the learning process and a to to hold me accountable and keep me consistent. I think everyone does it differently but also lots of people don’t do it, so obviously you can get along just fine without tracking, I just think it’s a good option for most people
Hello, this is a fantastic video. Would you mind sharing how you track please and on what ie a book, an app, a spreadsheet? also what do you write on the page? If you do 30 mins in the morning, 45 mins in the afternoon and one hour in the evening, do you write in your book every time you do some spanish? what if you dont have your book with you, do you just make a note somewhere on your phone and then write it all down later in the evening. I would just like to follow the way that you do it as it obviously works, and I want to make it so simple that I do it every day, thank you so much.
Thank you! So I have to say, my system actually isn’t very fancy or super efficient, I literally just note it in a word document as I go and track the totals in an excel spreadsheet, generally I try and do it as I go but sometimes I forget 🙈 I think anyway of tracking is good so just do whatever seems easiest and best for you
Started tracking everything on notion. Going well so far

How do you track your time? Apps or programs?
Smart. Just made a new Google Sheets spreadsheet.
Awesome!

@@ShaneGodliman great thank you so much. Like you say, one can get so caught up in doing things properly that they never get done 😆
