If a brake pipe is corroded and cannot be seen on an mot test, it cannot be tested, on many vehicles brake pipes are hidden under panels and can run over the top of fuel tanks...

A car needs a mot certificate to say its safe to be driven on the roads.
Maybe the roads should have one.

in nz we use to have to check every 6 months now its yearly, the garages were saying road crashes and deaths would go up, they never did but garage profits did go down. $50 charge for a 15 minute inspection is a good source of income

All braking would not be lost completely as all current vehicles have Duel system brakes to save you in this scenario . Pedal would be near the floor but would still pull you up . Greeting from Australia I use a mobile braketester here in NSW and this exact thing happened to me few years back but was front brake flexi line that failed

This very thing happened last year, but 5 mins after I had left the MOT Centre after having passed the MOT. Fortunately I noticed the brakes gradually failing and got home 2 mins later. So I would certainly recommend getting the WHOLE brake system checked, not just what you can see!!!!!!

Its a summer job for me checking all the brake pipes. Neighbours think I am mad checking and doing work on my car when most people just get in them and drive them, and as you say only worry about it when the mot is due. Needless to say my car has been very reliable, despite its age, and i put that down to my proactive maintenance. Of course anything can happen and i am not immune to breakdowns so pay my breakdown cover every year, just incase.

common problem on the vectra c this Is. having it routed over the fuel tank totally dangerous imo because you can't see any corrosion and this should be a safety recall and be relocated. I've noticed on my vectra C the last owner must of had some brake pipe work done in this area because there seems to be 2 pipes joining together going over the tank. I definitely need to get mine changed.

My Mercedes has the same problem. I have found out it is a common fault. I had a rear ABS sensor fail and to do the job you have to remove the wheel arch liner. What I found shocked me having been working on cars for 60 years. The liner covered a badly corroded pipe that is not normally visible. Over 80 % of the brake pipes on this car run behind covers that are not visible for a routine mot.

Thankfully the customer was OK about it we replaced the pipes and one fuel line as well
Classic case of test as presented

That's interesting I've had two brake pipes burst on me in 30 years but it was the flexi hoses both times on an escort and an uno. There wasn't any testing done in Ireland in the 90s so things were abit dodgy then. Now we've got the nct and to be honest it's a private company so lots of failures depending on the flavour of the month...

Yikes... You know there are countries in Europe where vehicles are inspected once every 2 years. I think there are US states that don't even have inspections. Its difficult to say really. Like you said. How much is minimum standard one day of the year when you might not even be able to see stuff like this worth?
Even as a DIY guy whenever i service a vehicle i always inspect it for signs of trouble. Its about all you can do really. The worst thing I've ever caught was completely destroyed track rod end. The one wheel was all floppy. It was on a Renault.

My thoughts are, they have brought this in because they say people who own vintage cars generally look after them and maintain them etc,
I think it has opened up a new problem as poor people living hand to mouth with no disposable income can drive cheaply by buying a vintage car which doesn't require a mot/ has a cheap or exempt tax bracket and classic insurance which is a fraction of the cost of regular insurance,
Meaning poor people can get on the roads easier and are not going to be able to afford to maintain it and keep it in a road worthy condition, creating more danger on the roads

    • @nickclark6001

@@benking9503 You will find just about everyone with a modern car is "poor" they will do anything to avoid going into a dealer to buy parts for their car. Whilst MOT exempt cars do far less work and their owners enjoy keeping them up to scratch... They are certainly far less troublesome than a new car 😸

    • @alan4x

it does and the brake pedal will not go straight to the floor so with a burst pipe you have a number of seconds under sustained pressure on the brake pedal but it will sink to the floor, although chances are you have time to brake and stop safely

Had this myself (2 BMW Minis & a Renault scenic so far this year). Nothing to be seen during visual inspection then pipe bursts on brake rollers. Always seem to be corroded at plastic clips where you cannot see what condition is. My advice is start engine & stand on brake pedal while your car is safely parked every once in a while. If nothing else it will save the MOT tester having to tell you that if you want to take your car home you're going to need a recovery truck!

Hi. You need to lower the rear subframe to get to the brake pipe that runs along the rear of the fuel tank and connects to the passenger rear hose.
It is a pain of a job. It could cost you a few hundred pounds at a garage

Add more insult to an injury when rear brake hoses go on a vectra c if only a slight un noticble leak it adds air to your clutch and you lose it then you stamp the brakes to try and stop and they pop left no brakes stuck in 5th at 40 mph 💩
