My grandmother played the piano in theaters during the silent movie era. She grew up in West Virginia, near the Ohio and western Pennsylvania borders. Grandma was born in 1895 and lived to be 99. She loved going to the movies. Wonder if she saw this picture show?
Helen was quite proficient at the Morse code Telegraph, ---...---! Helen to the rescue on the motorcycle but no leather helmet for her only a checkered cap!! Helen in charge!!! She told the engineer of the excursion train to uncouple from the coaches and give chase after the runaway 3201 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler. Helen the Brave!!!! Nice movie, but the music is awful. In silent movies the music was necessary for the dramatic art of the movie. It assited the feelings and the action, but this music does nothing of it.
Telegram at 2:03 says injectors open and oil burning which means engine was getting supplied fuel and water when running. Odd that film producers knew to explain details like that back then.
That is very observant. I myself missed that, now that I see it I don't find it odd, that they explained such small details, it's seems people back then were aware of their surroundings and understood things that weren't in their occupation, or what ever they did for a living.
Lots of times the heroine was that legendary actress Mary Pickford, who was so young looking that she was still playing the parts of 14 and 16 year old girls when she was over 50!

James said THANK YOU to Edward. And James said that Edward wasn't a piece of old iron after all. As a reward. SIR Topsham Hatt sent Edward to the repair works...Edward said Oh thank you Sir!! By using some of the preserved steam locomotives from museums, and excursion train, we can recreate this movie in color in 2021. And also use miniature live steam locomotive model for special effects. And some of the exact locations even after over 100 years. Now, WHO is the Modern Helen????? Hi in September, 2021.
Hello the engine caught up with the runaway they both have buckeye couplings run into the back of the lead engine they snap shut locking them together the rear engine puts on the brakes and brings it to a halt regards Richard
I set the playback speed to 75% and it seemed normal. Very entertaining, in spite of the Debbie Downers that kept talking about not feeding coal, etc. Accept it for what it was back then - an action movie.
@likitty20 Also in the note she wrote oil on. Notice the tenders don't have coal. Coal was not as readily available in La. but there was plenty of oil. In the 1910's the technology for refining oil was not as good as today. There was in fact waste in the oil industry. The RR purchased the Waste oil for almost nothing. That's why there is plenty of smoke. and the safety valves were popping. Also injectors on depending on how much can overflow the boiler and lock up the cylinders breaking them
@sfo1164 Basically, the Railway Series is what Thomas and Friends was before it suffered from sugar-coating and inauthenticity in the hands of television. Old Iron was where the character Edward proves himself in a sort of rodeo-esque rescue of another engine.
Watch that guy run the Armstrong levers on the interlocking plant in several spots on the video. There's no doubt he's a straight-out railroad employee rather than an actor! Those are the moves you'd make to operate 'em. One move is "the gentle jerk". It's a hard, controlled snap that you'd arrest a couple inches of movement later into a more controlled pull; that's how you get all that weight (of the draft tubing) moving. You wouldn't accomplish it by just pulling with all your might!
The injectors are placed just. below the firebox and are fed steam from there because it's highest there, the water comes from the tender and is forced into a pipe from this steam. This pipe goes to the front of the loco to the feed water heater, then into the loco at that point because the pressure is lower at the front. Steam locomotives are an excellent point of study, only REAL MEN know about them! If it you ever get a chance to look at the back of a steam engine, check out it's gonads, they are the size of beach balls!

The giant gas-holder tank in the background says "L A Gas". maybe it's near Los Angeles? Does anyone remember these tanks, when they made water gas at the coke plants, before natural gas was pipe-lined to the Midwest for heating?

If it was moving in the yard, it would not have had a conductor. If it were being moved to the ready track from the roundhouse or shop, only a hostler would be needed. Besides, in that era, the conductor did not ride in the locomotive. On the main line, the three man engine crew was the engineer, fireman, and head brakeman. The conductor and rear brakeman rode in the train, or in the caboose on a freight.
With the modern synth music Hopefully somebody can make a new music score with THE MIGHTY WURLITZER THEATRICAL PIPE ORGAN which was preserved be A.T.O.S. of the usa.🇺🇸 GOD BLESS THE U.S.A!!!!! AMEN.

It seems to stop by itself just as the other engine catches up to it. Did it just run out of fuel? Or did my aging eyes miss an obvious bit of action?

That said, the way the engineer got nailed by the electric cord, at best he'd be doing yard speed which is usually 5 mph.... so really it shouldn't have been hard to run down. But, it's a movie...
I assumed we were supposed to think they coupled the chase engine to the runaway and used the brakes. Didn't see anyone climbing over the engine though. I think the saying "it's just a movie." applies here.😂 The plot doesn't really hold water, even if you know nothing about railways but, as a bit of "action-packed" fun, it did the job. 👍

So did the average viewer in 1915 understand the meaning of the various railroad semaphores, the operation of the switchgear etc? Theyre used in the storytelling process, but I'd have no idea of their significance to the plot.

It was torn down. The rail line was shifted so that the opening from the naval base could be widened to allow transport ships the get to the base. There is a drawbridge still in use by the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad in Ashtabula, Ohio at their main receiving site where they now load coal into the cargo ships that then go to main power plants along the Southern Coast of Lake Eire. It is a Hugh rail yard with, as of 6 years ago, had even old auto-dumpers that would lift the coal cars to dump them right into the transport ships. If you are ever in the area it is worth the stop to see it as it is a main rail head for three railroads to unload or pickup the coal that the B&LE hauls in.

i am loving the movie and the music as seperate entities. but together it is almost impossible to get through.

Probably would have run the fire down and steam was running low. I used to fire over a half ton just to run 5 miles at light throttle.
