- “Extra’s” Billy Bush sat down with journalist and TV producer Rick Kirkham via video chat to talk about Joe Exotic and the hit Netflix docuseries “Tiger King.”
Fans will recall that Rick spent five years filming a reality TV show with Joe, and the footage famously burned in a studio fire on the zoo grounds.
Now, he’s dropping some major bombshells from arson to dead animals to Joe’s sexuality.

Take what Rick says with a grain of salt. He's bitter, look at the attention and money the show made, that could have been him in his mind. Not too mention he was producing a reality show, and they always fake stuff. Most of those shows are everything but reality, and with that it's usually the producers who entice or create the drama, not the actors. He's sensationalizing it that's what his job was and is to do. Otherwise he would have told us about Joe illegally killing Tigers when he said oh yeah I seen it and then tells a story about him killing a dying horse. While that's unethical its not illegal and then he literally bases Joes entire personality off that one single story.

I saw a video that said he had a back up locked in a safe, but the fire was so hot, the safe melted. Probably would've been a good idea to keep the safe in a different location.🤷🏼♀️

I went back to 5-6+ years ago on JoeExotics RUclips and Joe was always a hot mess but he didn’t get so crazy and wild as he’s seen on the documentary until Rick came to the zoo to fill his “reality show” and rick is in the background of the videos hyping things up and getting him to put on an extreme personality and saying he was scared of the tigers he has 100s of videos in all different tiger cages and when he was in the thrown the guy had one trained tiger and a small horse whip no chain no gun the entire video being shot is on the joe exotic RUclips then rick talking about how he was attacked by young tigers and they ripped his neck it in a RUclips video and rick was so happy he got scratched and was bleeding on camera
Rick was the fuel that burned Joe Exotic to the ground I really believe he was the start of the snowball effect that took Joe down

I think this guy is full of it - Joe has numerous footage of him in the cage by himself with all kinds of tigers - not only in the cage but all over the tigers and he could have easily shot the tiger messing with his shoe that day but didn't.

Other employees confirmed that he shot tigers just to make room for cubs and in one case because he was mad at one. He didn’t do it in front of cameras because that was bad for his image of loving the cats.

Joe has indeed abused animals. Julie, a lioness who got her arm ripped off by tigers was placed on a back cell, without proper medical treatment. Her little nub was infected and bleeding and she was so used to human attention but was alone so public wouldn't see her....so when anyone came by she would cry and grind herself against the cage. Even though it caused pain she just wanted comfort. Joe beat a tiger cub with a metal pole for being less bothersome than a puppy. It was common practice. The staff bragged about getting away with lying about how often they fed (or should I say didn't feed) the animals. A goat walked around with its brain exposed for days and a horses face had chunks rotted off but they wouldn't give him pain relief so they could feed him to the cats...they left him to die in pain in the cold. Let's not even get into the "punishments" given to animals that misbehave in front of the public. ALL OF THIS IS ON FILM. It's not an "oh fuck Joe for making me look bad" he's been tracked since 2006 for this stuff. The weirdest thing about Joe is how likable he is. I genuinely like how he presents himself, but he is no saint. He has hurt animals. If he was willing to do all that for cost efficiency and presentation why would killing a few tigers he didn't need be so out of character?

Laura Parkinson I think if anyone is that scared how Rick is making it seem they wouldn’t go that close to tigers sedated or not!! But I do not believe that. Like the main comment... I’ve watched countless videos of him with many tigers over the years. They seemed to be comfortable with him and he seemed to be the complete opposite of scared.
Always be Smart I agree! Joe’s demeanor around those cats is that of a very seasoned handler. If not he would have been firing off rounds at the cat dragging him in sheer terror. He knew exactly what he was doing while in those cages. Rick’s attitude towards Joe is the same as Joe’s toward Carol. Pure hate. Not that I blame him, but his accounts have to be dismissed due to extreme prejudice.
Laura Parkinson check out a video by Jeff Lowe called “We Live with 220 lions and tigers”. Jeff and Joe are in a cage with a pen full of very curious tigers. They’re neither sedated or blind. Joe had Jeff’s back the whole time. Joe was definitely not afraid. Just very respectful of the danger. I think Rick was the only down to earth person there but his account is very prejudiced against Joe. For good reason too!
If this Kirkham character really witnessed these illegal killings of tigers and horses then why didn’t he report it directly following each event? NOW he talks?? Does anyone here believe his story?

His ex wife Tammy. There’s an amazing documentary that was made out of video diaries Rick filmed of himself and family over around 7 years. It’s called TV Junkie and was shown at Sundance 2006(I think). It documents his drug use and career struggles and family. Poor Tammy what a strong woman, definitely felt terrible for her. Made me hug my wife extra tight tonight as I put her through similar 🤦♂️. Drugs are bad, really hope Tammy is doing well cause that’s a great woman.
I have a massive issue with people who think like this. Kirkham was an addict, yeah. He got to the point of suicide before he turned back. He became went around educating people about drug abuse (actual drug abuse btw), tried to make something positive about it.
I don't think he's an amazing person by any stretch, but I think you're taking away from the fact that people can change, and reinforcing a lot of the stigma that stops people from ever been able to change their bad habits.
With the success of tiger king he just realises how much he lost.

I didn't get that sense when they were doing the taping but now after the fact yes you can see he is jealous by comments he makes. Individual cameras can survive, I'm guessing some cameras that weren't stored on site, or that the crew had in their possession, considering someone is filming the aftermath. The majority of the footage intended for the documentary, ie the stuff that would be incriminating, was stored in backups on site. The stuff stored there would probably be the older footage, that obviously had to be stored somewhere.
I think people are being way too literal with a lot of comments, and playing internet detective way too much. All we know is what a documentary told us, and what these people (all of whom are pretty damn sketchy, btw) told us.
Because he grabbed the footage and burned down the studio. The footage doesn't include the bullshit that Rick claims so he can't say that he has it because then everyone is going to want the proof.

I don't know if I honestly believe this Rick Kirkham. I think EVERYONE of them have some sort of blood on their hands. They ALL need to be investigated, NOT just Carole.

well he's just filming, but one thing's for sure that they didn't cover in TK, is how he really was feeding those tigers, because the Road kill I doubt happened everyday, so he was definitely doing some shady shit to get enough meat to feed 200+ tigers.

I agree.. the horse story he said Joe took it behind the barn, now it's in the trailer. Also he would've been there BEFORE the tiger got his foot. The tiger got him while Jeff was there, Jeff was at the end. Then all the people that worked there, worked there for Joe, and clearly respected him. This man's tales are getting long. Also there is a video where Jeff got interviewed and he went into the tiger cage, Joe was in the background as the tiger handler while Jeff got all the glory. Again his story doesn't add up

I think they had backups of that clip because it was the intro to their reality show, and it was said that Joe would watch and rewatch it in the gift shop.
There was a different producer there for several years before Kirkham showed up that a lot of the footage is from, the old producer had sold the reality show to A&E but when Saff lost his arm, they canceled it and the old producer left, then Kirkham showed up and tried to restart the other guys work - was there for a year and got kicked out, Kirkham's version of what happened just before the fire and other people's story about their argument vary greatly.
Jt Barnett is the other producers name and there are interviews of him on here too if you want to go down that rabbit hole lol

Joe made himself look bad. There's hidden cam footage of Joe abusing his tigers, some of them cubs. Why on Earth people defend Joe, a guy who abused his cats and is on film abusing his cats, is beyond me. People are stupid. A lot of the cats that were used for cub petting ended up with ring worm. Both the Netflix crew and others who worked for Joe have all confirmed this and Joe knew about it. Joe knew that is was common for cubs who were taken from their mothers and used for petting ended up with ring worm and he still did it.
Seems to me that if he had all the “incriminating” video footage he runs his mouth about so much, he would’ve definitely had it backed up and secured...... unless of course he DID make a deal with Carole and she’s just sitting on it until she decides what she wants to do with it.
He says in this video that Netflix paid him for all these clips that were NOT on the RUclips channel or anywhere else.. but he continues to whine about “losing everything”. Also, that security video clip of him out lurking thru the park in the wee hours before is a big red flag. This dude just oozes desperation since he screwed up his career. They’re all shady!!

Bret Morgan still seems like a big risk given the value he places on it... constantly. But what about all these clips and things he sold to Netflix? Where did they come from? Not being snarky, I am genuinely curious since he emphasizes how he lost it all yet somehow managed to keep key footage that tied things together with the Netflix parts. He never mentions the other guy who was filming a show before Kirkham even showed up or knew Joe existed either!! I just don’t believe a word he says.
I think kirkham set up the murder for hire plot honestly. Why not ? Easy way to get Joe to go away after he was filmed threatening Carole. Plus Rick knew he could make a deal and a large one at that with Carole to get Joe out of the way. The thing is, there is much more to this story than we know, and it should be interesting to see what happens next.
@@ou812i89 A lot of the netflix footage came from the producer who was there for several years before Kirkham showed up, Jt Barnett, he had sold a reality show to A&E but they backed out when Saff lost his arm and Kirkham showed up and tried to take resell Jt's show.
I’m not saying I don’t believe his story, but the fact that he was ok with animal cruelty until he found out he wouldn’t get rich off of it says a lot about him. I’m not an animal rights advocate, but it’s like if you’re in a relationship with someone that’s doing illegal shit, then once you break up you start letting other people know about what’s going on.

Sounds like the owner didn't want to or couldn't afford to put the "old" horse down. Shooting the horse in the head is not cruelty as long as the horse died instantly. Putting a live horse in with a tiger to be ripped to shreds would be cruelty.

Actually he mentioned it in another interview with ExtraTV and David Spade; The backups were in a safe in the same building that caught on fire. I also heard that he mentioned in another interview that he didn't use a cloud because the internet connection there was so bad that it would be stupid to depend on it, but I have not heard where that came from, but I wouldn't doubt it (remember, they were literally in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma). Anyways, the fires were so hot, that everything in the safe was melted / destroyed, with everything else being remotely flammable combusting.

Before taking what Rick says to heart, let's not forget Rick Kirkham is a reality TV producer and as we all know those shows are far from "reality", and it is the show makers who are usually responsible for those spicy controversial bits we see.
Billy Bush: "So you had footage of him stone cold killing tigers, shooting tigers in the head?"
Rick: "I witnessed it myself, let me tell you a story." Proceeds to tell a story about him shooting a dying horse.
So he made a completely false claim that and paints a beautiful picture that Joe was willy nilly murdering endangered species. Then you tell a story that while it does makes him look like a bad person, I'm sure everyone has those moments. But then you literally then hinge his entire personality on that on story.
What he did was very unethical, but not illegal, and therefore irrelevant to anything other than the sensationalism.
How about a story where Joes is killing tigers for no reason other than he could like you have claimed?
I'm assuming it's because he feels so wronged by him he's exaggerating to make others see Joe as he sees him. Just like Carol to Joe, Joe to Carol. Totally get that after having drama with people that are generally liked by others. Not saying I lied but any chance to trash the persons was almost elating. Honestly Rick got to see karma and hopefully this series helped Rick's pockets since he lost his retirement.

I dont know...meth is a weird drug. You get lost in a very odd mindset. Seems honest to me. Have you ever been to court? Its not easy to remember every little part of your life especially on drugs like meth. Sounds genuine to me, like someone got wrapped up in a drug circle, which is easy to do with meth. And he now regrets a lot of getting caught up. I live a very professional life, but made some wild choices when younger around bad drugs...around some very sick humans thats hard for me to process now that I was that naive and caught up in it. One week around meth heads and life can get very weird quick. I totally believe this.

Boy, this guy is very biased and bitter. It is really easy to make up stuff when you have no proof but wants fame. Rick, I have been watching these videos for 2 weeks and I see no fear or drugged cats.
He also had video proof of aliens, but it was left in the studio.
Let's talk about this. I find it very difficult to believe that both fires were linked to Joe Exotic but in reality the only person who was present in both fires was Rick Kirkham. Also, if all of Rick's footage was burned and no longer exists, how did he have footage to sell to Tiger King producers? I think his footage may not have included all of the "dirt" that he claims so with it no longer existing, he can make it be about whatever he wants. Yes Joe Exotic was wild and ignorant and exposed himself being arrogant, he did this himself so ofcourse it's easy to make up more believable things about him. Add some common sense to what Rick claims, the lady brought her old elder horse to Joe at the zoo to take care of because she couldn't take care of it? No, this sad heartbroken woman brought her elder horse to Joe to be euthanized and fed to the cats because she couldn't afford to have the horse put down and heavy equipment come bury it. It's easy to flip the narrative when your "proof" doesn't exist. I do believe that Joe created a fear for the big cats and that came from the ligers trying to drag him off. Another thing, if Joe was an evil animal murderer who killed tigers at will on camera with no care at all, when that liger was dragging him off to his demise, he would have shot her right between the eyes because he had every opportunity and every reason to do it, but he didn't. Rick is an arsonist who wanted to flee in both situations.
