"It's an inanimate object but it was made by people . . . those people put their heart and soul into this machine . . ." You couldn't have said it better. And the machines still have the souls of those people in them and they now have a soul of their own. I've brought quite a few pins back to life with your help and they all feel very special to me for this reason. Thanks for your videos and your spot on perspective. Keep up the great work!
I'm glad somebody understands what I'm talking about!
Absolutely love this channel! And no, I don’t get tired of seeing the same information over and over, because each machine is its own entity! Thank you Ron!
That's how I see it too, this machine has it's own story different from any other Eight Ball Deluxe L.E.
Good job on this video! I appreciate that you want to figure out how it works, instead of just looking it up on the interweb! There's no fun in that! Learning how it was assembled is the best part of repairing! Thank you!
Just noticed you've reached 61,000 subscribers! Congrats!
Thanks!
61,000 subs! That Jeff Bezos money! ;)
I bought one of these from a dealer last fall. We unplugged way more than was needed to get the head off so I could move it, but it worked when I got it home and reconnected! I wanted to reach in there and help you, but you've got it.
You are kind of right. The surge protection is a MOV - Metal Oxide Varistor. Principle is the same as your variac used on the radio, but it varies resistance dependent on heat and voltage instead of manually.
I just got the words confused, the Variac is pretty different lol Thank you for watching buddy
Pretty cool game. I’m still trying to decide if I like the cabinet style. It’s different and interesting. 🤨
Yes, there were three versions of Eight Ball Deluxe. They had the original version, the Limited Edition and there was also a version manufactured in 1984. The difference with the 1984 edition is the apron is a very dark brown color and the backbox is designed different.
This is beyond cool, I'm in the process of refurbishing an Eight Ball Deluxe for a customer as well. It's not the LE but I installed a new Hardtop that's identical to this one. It's produced by a small company in Granville, Ohio called Outside Edge and these are the highest quality overlays that money can buy. I also did one on a High Speed and it was just as stunning.
I never owned, nor worked on a pinball machine (although I did work on bowling machines/pinsetters a long time ago .. curiously similar), but watch your videos to see the genius of legacy.
It seems natural .. as if I did this in a past life.
Great to see a new pinball video. What a fantastic machine. It has a huge reputation which is thoroughly deserved. This series is gonna be just a joy to watch. Thanks Ronnie and Joe.
Nice machine. Looks like a lot of work but will be worth it in the end.. Thanks for the video series.
Your mememories of the past we must not forget. Thankyou
The top box was completely destroyed by water as well as the intermediate box.
Thank you Kevin, we figured it out after awhile :) I know you had told us but I didn't completely understand until we started looking at it. What a great little machine!
Looking forward to this project Ron, at least you dont have to worry about the playfield. Great machine to have in any collection
I have been looking for the standard version of the eight ball deluxe for my basement. Played this game every weekend in the bowling alley as a young teenager while my folks were bowling. I am so happy that you are featuring this game.
I think some of the magic went after they moved on from EM machines (for me, purely personal thing) but they're still amazing things to see how they were put together, and still fun to play. Looking forward to see you pull it in to shape, have a good day! Cheers.
I had one of these, gave it to my brother in Utah with a vector,English flats(apartments) are very small compared to Usa
Nice game
Interesting puzzle🎉
thanks for a informatvie video.
i am looking forward to the next part of fixin the de luxe pinball machine.
👍👍👍🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Ron good practice always puts the varistor downstream of a mains fuse. If it takes a huge hit and commits suicide to save the machine, the fuse should blow so there is no fire.
Can't wait to hear that classic startup sound "Eight Ball Deluxe....3 Ball"
Actually, mine says “ Eight Ball Deluxe, Chalk Up!”
@@andyevans2336 I'm guessing that's when you start a game? I was talking about when you turn it on.
Yup chalk it up is when you start a game, "3 ball" is what it says when it's first turned on
1000 thumbs up! “Eight Ball Deluxe. Chalk Up!”
I about choked when you opened that playfield up and there’s that mess of wires. What a headache!
Btw, we got a lot of crack heads up here in PA that mess with pinball machines
They're all over the place!
Finally! My favorite game of all time! EIGHT BALL DELUXE!! Thank you
Love project puzzles like this! Wish I were in your neighborhood so I could help you get this game back together but I think you are well on the way without me. :) It appears he has a replacement home-made backbox insert in the game. The original metal insert, which may be in the box, had mounting holes for the fluorescent lamp brackets. This replacement wooden insert is missing that which probably explains why the fluorescent ballast and transformer have been removed.
Also, this is a limited edition made with leftover cabinets from the il-fated Rapid Fire game. Playfield looks like it's from the later 1984 release as it has the circuit boards for the lamps.
Kanuder valve😮
Binford 2000
neato looking machine. can't wait to check this here out Later On!
Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.
Nice to have you back!😊
just awesome. totally enjoyable. good luck. doing that is so groovy..
Great video Ronnie, eight ball deluxe is very fun game to play. It looks like you have a lot of wiring to figure it out. I wonder what happened to the head? I see you now have 61k subscriber's, way to go. I will see you on the next video. Thanks for filming.
MOV --- it is a varistor.
A volume control is a potentiometer or "variable resistor."
One thing I haven't seen in this is that IMHO, there should be a fuse (for everything) before the MOV. Thus, if the MOV gets a dead short, that fuse would blow.
I was getting it confused with a 'variac' a completely different thing :)
@@LyonsArcade -- I just thought of something. I was wondering where the name came from. The thought of a "voltage-controlled resistor" comes to mind. What parts might do that? A diode of some sort might fit that. The resistance in a circuit with a diode gradually reduces until the full conduction point. A varistor, when you look at the schematics, does appear as 2 Zener diodes.
loved the slide show.
Lovin it.
The 8-Ball series of games was always so much fun. On my wish list...but that's all they will ever be. SWMBO doesn't understand. :(
Great game i have a first version of Eight ball deluxe nice game to play
Top box was originally a Mr. & Mrs. Pacman.
I thought it was the wrong size for a minute there but nope they're identical...
"was there a crackhead involved"
always my first question when repairing electronics too. it's totally normal.
There's always the possibility of a crackhead being involved
Or a raccoon on meth…same grief
Maybe that version of power supply section was for the combo pinball/Pac-Man and the "spare" transformer was an isolation transformer for the monitor it included? Maybe?
"The wires tell you where they want to go" - Pinball Shaman
It wouldn't surprise me that the head and neck were cobbled together out of several different machines to make one period correct one.
My that's a big transfomer.
How many amps does that put put ?
Hey Ron!!
Hey Jason!
Is the 120VAC missing because its intended to be replaced by LED off the 5V?
Yes
JOE, What is the benefits or advantages of using LINEAR Flippers compared to using Non-Linear Flippers?
Phrase of the day: wax-tar driplets 😂
Chalk up!
You said there is an LED kit for back glass at the beginning ? So why, would you need fluorescence tube parts on the power transformer board ??
You don't, but they were originally there. The LED's weren't originally there
@@LyonsArcade Yes and that's how the customer wants it, why are you so defensive .
Yeah, overlays are a lot of work to do well _and you'll know_ if they're not
THERMISTOR! :D
That's the word!
Where are the displays?
Looks like mass carnage to me
Holy shnikeys this will be 10 vids
"Some assembly required."
Okay, I know this is going to get a LOT of negatives, but: For reasons of historic preservation... We might want to seriously consider the use of LED modules, and not incandescent. I KNOW. Please, just think about how GOOD this looks, and how long we want it to keep working. LED is probably going to be here in another 50 years.
pfffft
LEDs will put less stress on the power and other components of the games. It's definitely worth the effort even if you only replace the GI and use the original sunlight or warm-white color temperature.
Yodelayheehoo
I think I know what is wrong with it. It's Broke.
61000 subs and still no HD camera
Pretty Impressive huh
Oh no!
OG did not have lights like that
