I really loved the soft top when it came out, but ever since i saw this at the New York Auto show i fell in love, its overall such a beautiful car and i love the Targa Top Roof....Great Review man i was waiting so long for a review like this
Have only owned a manual this far, but let's be honest we all get sick of it at times. I am almost certain that this will be my next car with an AT gear box. There is absolutely no perk that comes along from buying a manual car. Face it, AT + paddle shifters is the way to go nowadays
Now i know why i love this new design so much! From the side it looks so much alike the Pontiac Solstice, which is like my dream car. Im highkey liking this design on a Mazda, honestly, kudos to them for making a cute car like this.
Honestly, the Miata RF is so much better than the Solstice which, despite its nice exterior design, never came close to beating the Miata driving experience. My advice: go for the RF. You won't regret it.
Those "red" nappa leather seats would be a great replacement for the worn out burgundy ones in my 85 Rx7.. IMO the styling on the RF surpasses the prior PRHT. Keep up the autogoodness Mazda!!
I've tested both the BRZ and the Miata. For me, there's 3 main differences. 1) The BRZ has a power dip from 3-5k RPM which for me totally eliminated it as an option. You can confirm this online if you pull dyno charts of a stock BRZ. If you drive the BRZ at high RPM, as you should with all "sports cars", when you shift up you shift right into about 3500 RPM and the car just sits and doesn't do anything till it labors its way past 5k. For me, this was a killer. The Miata has no power dip across its curve. 2) The BRZ is a fun, spunky car that seriously grips the road hard. No matter how fast you are going, or how hard you turn, the thing seems to just rotate on a dime. Great handling. The Miata has more body lean and "roll" in the corners, but IMO that contributes more to the feel that you are pushing it to the limit. Despite the lean and roll, the actual capabilities of the two cars are mostly similar. It's all about "feel". 3) The BRZ has no open-air option. If you only like coupes, get a BRZ (if you can handle the power shortage mentioned in #1). If you only like convertibles, you are "forced" to get a Miata (forget the Fiat, for now), but IMO, it is the more fun car anyway. Full disclosure: my launch edition RF was loaded on the boat Dec 12th and will be here in ~2.5 weeks.
I couldn't agree more about the BRZ's power shortage. I've asked Subaru why no more power (or at least a turbo). Quick answer was that they were pleased with the BRZ as is. Too bad, because I think this car has more potential. As for the Miata and Miata RF - wow, just wow. Yeah, despite that body roll (which I don't mind), this car handles wonderfully. You made an awesome choice!
Great review. One thing though, I have a 2016 MX-5 Miata Club that I bought in June and the "infotainment" screen is also in color, not black and white. No big deal. I gotta say though, even though I love my car and wouldn't trade it for anything (anything I could afford anyway), that fastback look is gorgeous.
I have owned a Nc soft top and currently own a Nc phrt Grand Touring . I daily drove/ drive both cars and have tracked both as well and I didnt notice any difference between the two. I remember reading that the weight of the phrt gave the car a true 50/50 weight ratio as well. Living in Oregon where it rains the phrt is definitely the way to go
As far as I know, the automatic Miata RF are only one out of four configuration available. Whereas the other three configuration are manual only. If you curious, try visit Mazda UK site, go to the Mazda RF sub site, and click preorder thing to play with configurator. But that's it, idk about other region...
Just got a 2017 Fiat 124 ... Had to wait 6 weeks for Fiat to find me a Fully Loaded Lusso Stick in my color combo.. Meteor Gray / Black, LOVE IT !!!, But Damn.... LOVE that MX Fastback !!!!! Damn !!!! Damn !!!! Damn !!!!.. Maybe in a couple years, I'll get the Mazda too !!!!! But keepin my 124 forever !!! Got my 124 over the MX5 for the Retro Nostalgia.. Always Loved Them... Old roommate had one in the 80's, and I borrowed it ALL the time..... When it was announced last year, I immediately thought THAT'S MY Next Car!!! Sold my Mustang GT for it.... Love the Turbo, NO Lag, once you get the engine / clutch down.. Getting the Good-Win Racing Quad Exhaust next, which adds 15 hp, ups Torque to 200, making it faster than the Abarth coming out... NEVER in my LIFE did I EVER think I'd own a Miata, But LOVE my Spider.. 124 Italian Retro Looks, Turbo, Proven Miata underpinnings, Japanese build quality.. Best of Both Worlds.... The new MX5 is growing on me, but still prefer my 124 over it.. but again.. That Fastback... OH HELL YES !!!!!!! Makes the back end look like a Friggin Ferrari !!! =).. FYI, I also own a '68 Austin Healey Sprite.. Hell, it makes my 124 look Huge.. lolol... at 54, they both keep me Uhm.. FLEXIBLE.... =)
Cannot help but love this vehicle. It really is an upgrade from the regular roadster. I'am interested to know how they re-worked the balance distribution as the basic roadster is perfectly weighted
Speed6 that all wheel drive was amazing or an all wheel drive speed 3 as an option but ford doesn't want to compete with itself by releasing a speed3 or speed6
Just a heads up: Those are the OEM non-brembos. Brembos are a part of the sport package. The regular miata also has a color screen on the center console. Still, fantastic video! Enjoyed watching it :)
I bought an mx 5 last sept with auto it drives great I didnt want. to be shifting all the time It preforms well in auto and manual . I have been driving a stick for many years and like the the option of shifting or just relaxing with a cup of coffee without have to put the cup down to shift just my opinion
I’ve had an auto 2016, loved it, great gas mileage. Now have a 2017 manual and love it too! I was going to supercharge it so bought the manual, it just seemed to go together.
I test drove a NC and the new ND. They are so peppy it did not feel underpowered at all. I want one so bad it's the perfect car for me the manual transmission feels telepathic. My 128i I ended up buying from the same dealer I can't belive my 2012 128i costs less than a used miata. They really hold their value. The NC felt better down low but the ND felt better on the top end. If they do a Mazda speed rf with a turbo that would be the perfect car.
What for a softtop version did you drive?Mine has a coloured screen. The 160 hp european models are the same in interieur like the rf, exept the super roof.
What were those little tabs on the right/left side on the back side of the steering wheel. One was marked - (left side) and the other +/off (right side) of the steering wheel. Could they possibly be paddle shifters which would that enable the car to be driven like a manual drive?
When I get mine im getting full suspension, new rims,turbo,intercooler,6piston brembos and 4 piston back, heathers and exhaust it will end in 45K tops but its going to be such a nice car
Cool car, and my favorite Miata, just wish they’d make a non convertible hard top version that would make the car even more quiet... Some of us would love that. I’m not a convertible or open roof kind of driver...
There is so much more to driving than going from 0-60 in 2.5sec, and that's what the Miata (any generation) is all about! I really do like the looks of this car, but my feeling this is for the person who wants just a little wind in their hair, not like a true convertible.
This car is actually quite gorgeous - and I've never thought that about these cars. The back end is a bit of a rip off of the Pontiac solstice - and that's a good thing. People who hate on this car's power just don't get it. It's not meant to be a stop light drag racer...it's a back road weekend toy....
but it has paddles on the steering wheel. can't you just shift gear using those? wouldn't that be the same effect as driving a manual? that way you could also keep your hands on the wheel at all times.
Thank you for making this video! It's wonderful. I have a question and excuse me if it's been asked already, but what is it like with blind spots? I have a 2014 MX-5 PRHT and when the top is up, I get big blinds spot because of the rear sides of the roof. I have to move my head towards the steering wheel and look over my shoulder. But with the roof down, I can quickly glance and I'm fine. Is there an issue with blind spots for you when you have the seat all the way back? Thank you!
Sadly we weren't allowed to drive it at Pebble Beach, it was simply on display. We didn't notice any serious blind spots but again, a test drive will give a definitive answer. Glad you enjoyed the review!
I would still prefer the soft top. I can understand if people who live in area with winter would want the RF. Also where I live the leather will scorch you.
I live in Las Vegas.. Talk about Scorching hot... Leather doesn't bother me at all.... you just need to constantly put on leather moisturizers... Vegas is IDEAL Convertible weather.. Summer... top down before noon, and after sunset.. Winter.. Top down Anytime !!!!! LOVE IT !!
Why is there such a difference between Europe and USA for 0-100km/h times? A lot of youtubers in the US say it's around 6seconds, but here official Mazda numbers are around 7 seconds...Also in EU the Mx-5 engine makes 5 more hp-> 160hp
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking more that the measurement standard differs, because even with calibration differences, we still have 5 more HP and the same weight.
Would like to see a true coupe version of the Miata. I bet it would look terrific. Kind of like how the Cayman looks better than the Boxster, to my eyes anyways.
I have the NC power retractable hard top. There have been zero problems with it and it only adds 70 pounds. It's widely regarded as the best retractable hard top in the business. So I don't know what problems you are talking about.
I live in Canada Ontario and was a detailed for a Mazda dealership, the displays were all colour and never black and white so I don't know what he's taking about
CarBuzz - Unboxing Everyday Cars and Supercars all good man! I was just shocked haha but most the ones I was in were GT trims! Although haven't seen the RF in person, have a good one mate!
It's not a fastback, just because someone in marketing thought it should be. The rear window does not follow along the roofline. It's a targa. Only thing I have to nitpick about.
I really hope this isn't released with a price over 25k. the Lotus Elise can be found in California for 26-34k . great video though.about to check out the rest. just came from the 2017 370z nismo and it was gorgeous lol
Dear mazda if you could give us a fixed roof coupe version of this that would be great. Fixed roof =more rigirity, lighter, no ugly panel gaps on top, lesser wind noise on higher speed, no moving roof parts that will break down after 10yrs or so. Just please! Thank you.
Current Mazda styling of all models is on point.
Can someone explain me why so many dislikes? It's one of the sexiest low budget car ever
Because it's auto
206 vw polo lovers
Because a slush-box auto says "I actually know nothing about cars, and am just reading Mazda's press release."
niksarass yeah, that's what I'm about to comment here. Why there's so many dislikes, I don't understand these people.
dislike the voice, not the car
Whats with all the dislikes? I think this man did a decent overview of the car.
Welcome to RUclips. Everyone's a critic, few are actual creators.
They want a road test
I just picked up the an RF Launch ... it's so pretty it makes me want to cry
I really loved the soft top when it came out, but ever since i saw this at the New York Auto show i fell in love, its overall such a beautiful car and i love the Targa Top Roof....Great Review man i was waiting so long for a review like this
You're very welcome. Yes, the RF is an absolute stunner.
The fastback makes it look like a Friggin Ferrari !!!
I have a ND. Living in a city with heavy traffic, shifting can be cumbersome. So yes an automatic is great in that respect. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome! And yeah, I can see how all that shifting can get annoying in city traffic. That's why Mazda offers the slushbox.
Slushbox?, ha ha... Yeah but the paddle shifters gotta count for something!
Have only owned a manual this far, but let's be honest we all get sick of it at times. I am almost certain that this will be my next car with an AT gear box. There is absolutely no perk that comes along from buying a manual car. Face it, AT + paddle shifters is the way to go nowadays

My wife has an ND and we both love the car. We have done just about every bolt mod to it & it's amazing.
You're right, Miatas are the best!
I love my automatic transmission miata. Love love it and IDGAF WHAT Y'ALL SAY.
I love the fact that they don’t put an ugly engine cover on the engine. It just looks soooo much better
I've tested both the BRZ and the Miata. For me, there's 3 main differences.

This car is unbelievably nice! the rear the side the front! Maybe if those exhaust pipes where in the middle but wow what a car!
Thanks! Yes, I checked and it appears Mazda has upgraded the roadster's infotainment screen as well. And yes, that fastback look is stunning.
This is a very nice looking car I think Mazda has stepped it up in a huge way in the entire lineup
Oh, for sure. Mazda is moving upmarket very fast. In my opinion, it's one of the coolest mainstream brands these days.
I got mine yesterday - I love it.
didn't the NC chassis soft top only weigh 80lbs less compared to the similar trim PRHT?
Sounds about right, think it was closer to 100 lbs.
Yeah, this guy is acting like it weighed so much more.
tjport1980 on a car that weighs about 2,400 pounds. 100 pounds is a lot
I have owned a Nc soft top and currently own a Nc phrt Grand Touring . I daily drove/ drive both cars and have tracked both as well and I didnt notice any difference between the two. I remember reading that the weight of the phrt gave the car a true 50/50 weight ratio as well. Living in Oregon where it rains the phrt is definitely the way to go
can I get one without an ipad sticking out of the dash?
As far as I know, the automatic Miata RF are only one out of four configuration available. Whereas the other three configuration are manual only. I'm pretty sure you can get the RF with a manual in the US.

Glad you're all about the roadster experience! Enjoy!
I wasn't really interested in the RF ND before, but now I kind of love it
Cannot help but love this vehicle. It really is an upgrade from the regular roadster. I'am interested to know how they re-worked the balance distribution as the basic roadster is perfectly weighted
Great question! Hopefully Mazda will tell us, too. Like I said in the review, exact details still aren't known just yet.
Come on Mazda we're waiting for the new speed3. They should have put the turbo skyactiv in the MX5. Beast mode.
Everybody has been waiting for a new Speed3. Hopefully it'll happen soon.
I've heard Mazda have closed their Speed division.... I hope it's not true.....
www.carbuzz.com/news/2016/11/17/OFFICIAL-Mazdaspeed-Will-Return-To-Battle-Germany-s-Luxury-Giants-7736475/
Fingers crossed!!
Speed6 that all wheel drive was amazing or an all wheel drive speed 3 as an option but ford doesn't want to compete with itself by releasing a speed3 or speed6
"yup and theres that 6 speed automatic..." xD love the voice tone you had there.
Manual FTW.
Sadness naturally brings that tone. What can I do?
Hey CarBuzz . . . When are you going to come out with some information on the 2021 Mazda MX-5 RF GT?
Just a heads up:
Those are the OEM non-brembos. Brembos are a part of the sport package.
The regular miata also has a color screen on the center console.
Still, fantastic video! Enjoyed watching it :)
You are correct, thanks for clarifying.
are the storage spaces behind the seats, that one can find on the soft top, avalable on the hard top?
I bought an mx 5 last sept with auto it drives great I didnt want. to be shifting all the time It preforms well in auto and manual . I have been driving a stick for many years and like the the option of shifting or just relaxing with a cup of coffee without have to put the cup down to shift just my opinion
Your opinion is not at all uncommon anymore. Automakers are fully aware of people's driving habits today, hence one reason for more slushboxes.
I’ve had an auto 2016, loved it, great gas mileage. Now have a 2017 manual and love it too! I was going to supercharge it so bought the manual, it just seemed to go together.
did they fix the TERRIBLE cabin noise??/ Cannot believe the amount of road noise. Any solutions out there?
what is the difference between this car and teh reguklar mx? beside the hard top and leather
So is the nappa leather interior a shade of red or just brown? It seems to vary according to which video you watch.
good review 👍
I test drove a NC and the new ND. They are so peppy it did not feel underpowered at all. I want one so bad it's the perfect car for me the manual transmission feels telepathic. The NC felt better down low but the ND felt better on the top end. If they do a Mazda speed rf with a turbo that would be the perfect car.
Don't hold your breath for a RF Turbo.
Watched few of your videos and subscribed. Keep up the great review video.
Thanks!
Dang..such a good looking auto
Is that the new machine grey paint color that will come with the mx-5 rf?
Will the RF have the sport package as well? the BBS brembo etc. does different trim offer RF version, or it has to be GT?
Probably.
What for a softtop version did you drive?Mine has a coloured screen. The 160 hp european models are the same in interieur like the rf, exept the super roof.
You're correct; the soft top does have a colored screen.
What are your thoughts on the Machine Grey / Napa leather color combination? I'm considering A Launch Edition which would be spec'd the same.
Go for it! It's such a great color combo. Really gives the RF a more premium look, the red Nappa leather especially.
Excellent video! I really like the fastback also and was wondering if you think someone 6' 2" could comfortably fit inside this car?
Thank you! 6'2"? I think it'll be a tight squeeze, but not entirely impossible. You should go to a Mazda dealership and sit in one if you're unsure.
What were those little tabs on the right/left side on the back side of
the steering wheel. One was marked - (left side) and the other +/off
(right side) of the steering wheel. Could they possibly be paddle
shifters which would that enable the car to be driven like a manual
drive?
Yes. You are correct.
Great unboxing but I have a question: I'm 6.2 tall, Do you think I will fit with the roof on?
Yes, but it'll still be a tight squeeze regardless.
Mazda did a fantastic job with this car, very impressive.
When I get mine im getting full suspension, new rims,turbo,intercooler,6piston brembos and 4 piston back, heathers and exhaust it will end in 45K tops but its going to be such a nice car
$45k? Where do you live??
45 with all the car parts its going rto be a nice daily and track I live in mexico at the moment
You may be right there.
people are paper racers going on spec sheets. I have driven faster cars but no car was so much fun the feedback and experience was bar none.
Best thing about this pre-production model is that it doesn't have the goofy shark fin satellite radio antenna on the trunk.
why do you keep saying unboxing for the cars. do your cars come in boxes?
Yes, don't your cars come in boxes too?
Does the RF Club version come with homelink and autodimming rearview mirror?
I believe so, yes.
This car is actually quite gorgeous - and I've never thought that about these cars. The back end is a bit of a rip off of the Pontiac solstice - and that's a good thing. People who hate on this car's power just don't get it. It's not meant to be a stop light drag racer...it's a back road weekend toy....
i really want to buy this mx5 :) but 1 question : is it possible to use it in winter no problems with these type of cars ?
Depends on where you live. Snow tires are a good idea, for starters.
I live in -30C Edmonton winters and a coworker drives his NC year round. Just need snow tires and learn to drive on the snow.
Allan Chiu don't forget the wind chill🌬.
What are the differences between the club and the gt
I have an RF , and it’s awesome, and NO, the cup holder won’t fall out while driving 😄
but it has paddles on the steering wheel. can't you just shift gear using those? wouldn't that be the same effect as driving a manual? that way you could also keep your hands on the wheel at all times.
does anybody know how the interiro noise is at higheay speeds??? this or the standard rag top?
It's going to be fairly loud. It's a Miata, after all. But I think the hardtop here will be quieter than the soft top.
Liking this car. Nice video! Subscribed!
Thank you!
The side profile reminds me of the Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe.
Excellent observation!
Again.. That Fastback Styling.. WHOOT !!!!!
Living in the North East, a major factor stopping me is the snow up here. Wish it has AWD.
Keep wishing because it'll never happen.
This is one of the best looking affordable cars out there.
Absolutely!
They need to put the Focus st motor in one of these or at least the 1.6 ecoboost from the Fiesta st that would be a blast to drive
A Ford motor in a Mazda? I'd like to see someone try that aftermarket.
that car looks happy as fuck
Can it fit golf bags in trunk ???
It can probably fit a golf bag, not two.
Looking at this, reminds me how good looking an s2000 is.
Oh man, I LOVE the S2000. Miss it dearly.
I love this car and this review! thank you for this. May I ask how tall you are?
Thanks! I'm below NBA regulation height. Let's leave it at that.
Dude this car is fly. Saw it at the New england Auto show.
I would still prefer the soft top. I can understand if people who live in area with winter would want the RF. Also where I live the leather will scorch you.
I prefer the soft top, too.
LOVE IT !!
I used to live in Las Vegas.....way too hot although where I live now in North Bay is not too much different.
i have a third gen mx5, i love it, a fantastic drive. a happy little car. i defi anyone with an ounce of drivers spirit to deni that fact
The cup holders have different spots you can move them to, its why they come out.
True.
Why is there such a difference between Europe and USA for 0-100km/h times? A lot of youtubers in the US say it's around 6seconds, but here official Mazda numbers are around 7 seconds...Also in EU the Mx-5 engine makes 5 more hp-> 160hp
It's likely because the engines have slightly different calibrations based on governmental fuel regulations.
Thanks for the reply.
I was thinking more that the measurement standard differs, because even with calibration differences, we still have 5 more HP and the same weight.
Yeah, that's also very possible.
Lotus from the side. 75 Stingray rear roof lines. So nice.
if I were shorter, I'd definitely consider getting this car, but at nearly 6'2" it would be pretty cramped and not comfy as a daily.
You're right. Few people over 6 feet will be comfortable in this.
I was fine I test drive the NC it was a little tight the new ND is roomy I was fine I am 6,1
Would like to see a true coupe version of the Miata. I bet it would look terrific. Kind of like how the Cayman looks better than the Boxster, to my eyes anyways.
Closest you'll ever get to a pure coupe Miata is the Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86.
So glad it's automatic.
The only thing thats drawing me to the automatic is if you wear your clutch out, it can be quite pricey to fix apparently
The cup holders are removable because you can move it to the side of the foot well.
What is the colour of this one? Machine gray metallic?
Something like that, yes.
I can't work out who would buy one. What market is it aimed at ?
Miata buyers who want something a bit different.
I have the NC power retractable hard top. There have been zero problems with it and it only adds 70 pounds. It's widely regarded as the best retractable hard top in the business. So I don't know what problems you are talking about.
No problems...it just doesn't add anything unique to the exterior styling.
All the talk about the special roof but no video of operation?
8:36 - closing and opening the roof. Did we even watch the same video, or are you unable to focus for 8 minutes?
guess the rest of it was so boring i was skipping bits by then, including that whole almost 30 secs.
I live in Canada Ontario and was a detailed for a Mazda dealership, the displays were all colour and never black and white so I don't know what he's taking about
Yeah, you caught me. My bad.
CarBuzz - Unboxing Everyday Cars and Supercars all good man! I was just shocked haha but most the ones I was in were GT trims! Although haven't seen the RF in person, have a good one mate!
3:53 when do we get a review of that m1
Oh man, I wish I could get my hands on that!
Is that interior color only for the launch edition?
Good question, not sure. Mazda didn't clarify that for us.
Hopefully not, I'd gladly pay for it as an extra option.
Nice review.. maybe add background music next time? very nice video none the less
Great idea, thank you!
It's not a fastback, just because someone in marketing thought it should be. The rear window does not follow along the roofline. It's a targa. Only thing I have to nitpick about.
It is a fastback because Mazda said so.
Did they coin the term? No, so it doesn't matter if that is what they calling it, it isn't a fastback.
I love my ND soft top but I want one of these, I think I will be buying one next spring.
Will this model be available in a 6 speed?
Yes!
Tengo un MX5 del año 2012 y estoy muy contento con el,tiene 60000 km y ni una incidencia.
im confused on why the mx-5 2.0 is only pushing 155hp when majority of 2.0 are pushing way past that
Because it's not turbocharged.
CarBuzz - Unboxing Everyday Cars and Supercars neither is the frs/brz and they are pushing 200hp on 2.0 4 cyl
I’m 5’’11 do you think I will fit in there ?
I really hope this isn't released with a price over 25k. the Lotus Elise can be found in California for 26-34k . great video though.about to check out the rest. just came from the 2017 370z nismo and it was gorgeous lol
love, love, love this car. I'd buy it in a heartbeat......however nowhere near enough headroom....and I'm only 6 foot. A real shame....
Indeed! This is a brilliant car.
4th Gen Miata MX 5, Very sharp looking motor!
The reason they offer a 1.5 engine overseas is because they tax by engine displacement.
Exactly.
not exactly, over here youre taxd on the weight of the car
yeah, that's right in most countries over here!
Not in the Uk, you are taxed by CO2 emissions here, which sometimes means bigger engines cost less.
sfbdotcom in Belgium we have the privilege to be taxed once for CO2 emissions and for displacement every year ;)
What's the different between RF and normal ?
Power Retractable Hardtop. Thus RF - "Retractable Fastback".
Dear mazda if you could give us a fixed roof coupe version of this that would be great. Fixed roof =more rigirity, lighter, no ugly panel gaps on top, lesser wind noise on higher speed, no moving roof parts that will break down after 10yrs or so. Just please! Thank you.
Can you also add me to that signature. Thanks.
does It Have A Back Up Camera ?

"...goes back to the original soul" *pans to the automatic gear shifter*
