  • This is my second year growing my own sweet potatoes. Last year I started slips from grocery store sweet potatoes. I overwintered last year's harvest and used some of my home grown sweet potatoes to grow new slips for this year's crop. I need to get these slips planted if I am going to have enough frost free days to grow a crop of sweet potatoes. I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 4. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

I bedded some sweet potatoes this year for the first time. I remember Grandma and Grandpa used to bed them years ago. I love them too!

I always started slips from a previous year tuber saved in the basement and they always worked. The only issue was that some year the slips would sprout soon, other years later, making it difficult to properly time the whole process.
This year I clipped some vine from the sweet potatoes in the fall, rooted them and planted them as houseplants over the winter. I then used clipping from those plants to use as slips. It worked very well and are growing strong in the garden now

I’ll be planting my sweet potato slips in large grow bags this year. That’s the plan today! I’ve only grown them a couple of times out in the garden under a biodegradable plastic film and row cover. I’m giving it a try in containers this year, so I can pop them in the greenhouse when the cooler August ans September weather comes around. Wishing you a great growing season!

Howdy, Prairie Plantgirl and oh so cute Buster! He got the zooming!😄
I hope you get lots of sweet potatoes! You won't get any big ones from planting the potato...the slips will give you the tubers. Hopefully, it will stay warm longer, and your tubers get to size up nicely.😃
We are getting ready to enter our summer heat...right now it's mid 90s...so nice!
I'm getting lots of okra. The tomatoes are winding down. I'm rooting suckers from my Lemon Drop tomato plant to have fall plants to share.
The sunflowers...volunteer and sown are showing off!🌻
I'm hoping to harvest my next to the last sown pot of potatoes. I'm growing them under shade cloth.
Our Venus grapes are ripening. This is its second year...our first small harvest.😋
We have lots of blooms: zinnias, cannas, cosmos, calendula, and the sunflowers.👩🏾‍🌾
Your potato pots with the blooming flowers are sweeet!👍💕

You are in full swing and I’m still waiting to get consistent heat here! We still had a night near freezing last week! It’s been an odd start to summer here. Thanks for the sweet potato knowledge.

They grew and produced very well last year. These are sprouts from tubers I saved from last year’s harvest.
