Decisions are made based on the region and Climate in which you live.
Obviously if you lived in an area that had a Huge accumulation of snow you may opt for a Canvas tarp over a poncho. I actually only, not necessarily disagreed , differed on 1 thing and that would be that I would have carried either a Silky Hand Saw or Axe over a Box Saw only because if the blade pops or links your out of luck whereas an Axe can be re-sharpened.
    Great List and Well explained.

What I carry depends on where the survival situation is located. I'd take a well-designed tomahawk over a knife anywhere. Much depends of what your skill set is. The last thing I want is a multi-tool. That's for an urban setting, not a deep wilderness setting. Your chances of needing any of those tools except the saw is slim to none. I suspect that would also count as your knife. You shouldn't be allowed a multi-tool and a separate knife. I suspect everyone would take a ferro rod. The nice thing about a really large one is you can notch it, break it in half, and have two. I'd think you'd have to take the canteen by itself. I'd take a silky over a bucksaw. It works better, and cuts thicker locks, and larger standing trees. A kukri is fine, if you really know how to use it, but I think it's the worst possible tool to carry, and I know people get laughed at who carry them. If not to their face, then definitely behind their back. But, again, you shouldn't be allowed to carry a multi-tool and a separate knife. You shouldn't be allowed to carry a multi-tool, and any other tool that multi-tool has. Anyway, where is the next Alone being held? Without knowing that, a proper list is impossible.

Thank you so much for the best recommendations on the net. I am sick and tired of the lop sided views of the typical American videos. I have a very similar outlook with some other priorities.
    1. 9mm pistol
    2. Mutitool
    3. Poncho
    4. Basic fist aid kit.
    5. Kershaw Camp 10 machete
    6. Spyderco H1 steel rescue knife
    7. Small fixed blade
    8. Fire starting kit
    9. Spare warm fleece clothing
    10. LED torch and headlamp.
Need to get a cooking kit and a bivy bag.
    Thank you

Thor wants his fire starter back! Christ thats the biggest ferrocerium rod Ive ever seen. Totally agree with you on the poncho btw. I spent 3 months travelling around America, hitchhiking and rough camping. My poncho served as a coat, sleeping bag cover, rain cover, sun screen, you name it.

Very nice video. Thx for the tip on the copper pipe attachment. I just got some 10mm ferro rods and im going to try something similar on one to make an attachment for a lanyard. Thanks for that. I also recently discovered that taking a couple of tampons is really handy. If you cut a bit off, pinch it apart until its fluffy, one strike of sparks and they INSTANTLY go up in flames.
Keep making the videos dude, if you keep making good content like this its only a matter of time before you get a following.

Good video, have you ever spent 4 days in the rain when its 40 degrees out with a poncho tarp over you? Some of the places on the Alone show have weather like that. That is the one choice of yours I would change. You need a large tarp. Then bring the poncho and ditch something else. Only my opinion.

Thanks for your observations and list. The poncho (as a tarp alternative) stands out as a creative choice. I would mention that producers have indicated to at least two past contestants (e.g., those who tried to bring the PATHFINDER CANTEEN SET shown) that it would count as three items (canteen, base, cup), so no one elected to take it.

just found your channel and I'm enjoying it. keep doing what you do.
not a bad list but unfortunately your fishing kit, lovely and compact as it is ,would not be approved. the fishing kit was limited to 300m of mono line and 25 assorted hooks, thats it.
i can't say i agree with your choice of a poncho over a trap though. they were allowed clothing items besides their 10 survival items and a raincoat would be allowed so I'd choose to wear a nice long raincoat that at least covered my butt and have a tarp for shelter. it rains alot there and I'd go nuts if my only dry space was under a little poncho. the approved tarp was 12'×12' (4mx4m), you could cut a poncho out of that and still be ahead with the leftover material.

it is an interesting thought experiment, it went from 3, to 10, and 1 popped up, and now its 10 from a list. asuming that we follow the usuall rules, such as no combo items. we then have to talk about terrain, and enviroment. what your intended purpose is.skillset and all sorts of other things. we can asume you have clothes, and with the 10 from the list, there is a hefty list of freebee's
if i had one tool, it would either be a brand new BIC, or a flat shovel with a saw/edge. why the bic? energy, and certainty mostly. obviously with one item, there will be downsides, but I have knapped stones, need that stick busted up? HIT IT WITH THE ROCK!. I can process game with my bare hands if need be, but i'm gonna have fire. If i was in MN, my chances of friction fire go up. but its always uncertain, Soft wood, fingernail grove, hard wood, no fingernail grove, go from there, that's all i'm saying about that and hope you find something dry. the ability to have fire is your clean water, especially assuming you have a pot, to cook food, and keep warm, etc, etc warm fuzzy feelings.
moving up to 3, its a no brainer of cooking vessil, cutting tool, and fire. take your pick of the tool, pot, and fire, ill take my cold steel shovel with saw teeth filed in on one side, my bic lighter, and the pot off my stove, if need be, any pot, it don't matter, as long as its not crap, get a lobsterpot, get a machette, get a whatever, but 99% of the time, your top 3 should be those 3, unless its really really tundraie out, then get yourself a bear pelt.
the 10 get much more interesting, next on your priority is shelter, it would count as 2, but black bag, and bivy, I would be temped to add a tarp, and cordage,or a back up tool. but were at 5, and we are not gonna die, conditions pending in MN, or Patagonia terrain, you could not die quite well if you had food. and this is all season, terrain pending. jan/feb in the right spots of MN, give me a 10/22 and ill plink rabits all day. so a firearm is high on this list, take your pick, nothin wrong with a break action 12ga, with slugs, 00, and 4/6. or a 410/22wmr, or a 12ga/5.56 perhaps? take the gun you feel will get you food, thats 6, and a fishing kit is 7, you now have a firearm to carry as you slowly forage, and the passive ability to bank fish, and snag animals with hooks, and can fish while you relax.
so we have the shovel, that we can dig, chop, and cut with, its not the best at the later 2, but those tasks can be kept to a minimum, you can dig, and you can chop, and you can cut. what do you really NEED it to do. if it aint gonna make you warmer when you need to be, or give you food, or basic protection if needed, like shoes and a hat on naked and afraid, unless its really worth me doing, I aint doin it, unless its cold, you only need a fire for food, and water. Firewood, shelter, chairs, shoes all take calories. my choice would be different, if not for the durability, and capability
    shovel,lighter, pot, bivy, bag, food
we have fire with tool, and rod. we have water with fire and pot, and food with the firearm, and fishing kit, and also threw the pot, and fire, we have shelter with the bivy, and the bag, and the fire. were gonna stay warm, hydrated, fed, and intact. were not gonna do anything thats not worth it, were going to slow down, be oportunistic, exploitive, and methodical, and were going to be worried about nutrition deficits, fats, and vitamins.
thats basically my list,, 5 things i need to not die, 2 ways of getting food, and round it out with a back up tool, a mora perhaps, or a whistle, mirror if thats gonna be a thing, if it was cold, id use a spot of a giant wool blanket, and under alone rule, id have a sling shot, or a gill net not a firearm, and 8, 9, and 10, would all be pemican, fat, and fruit if it could, if not, spot 10 would be gorp, for a little handfull each day, fats, oils, complex sugars, amino acids anti oxidents, and rasins to boot, it would certainly help round out the protein of fish, even if you do boil and slurp the head off the bones, eyes for saline, etc and the foliage/wilds you happen to find, what would the paracord get me? I can still run a simple ground loom with just the natural material if present, or my fishing line if need be, what do I need to lash? what I need to do is maintain my body temp, which includes food, water, shelter, and keeping all the blood in, metabolism, bleeding out, all that jazz, so id stick with my 5, plus my 2 food, and 3 food, specially if im gonna get a tarp or 2, and a pack, and all sorts of other things, or if i wasn't on alone rules, id get a bumped up sling shot that goes bang, and asuming "food" wasn't an option, it would be back up tool, then it might be time to start thinking about maps, compass, whistle, blanket, or yes, paracord
bear in mind this is just a thought excersize, and true off the land solo survival is pretty impossible, even natives rely on seasons, and trade, you would have to be jonny on the spot. and in reality I would not be limited, and would have my shovel, or my 20in wetterlings, my folding saw, my 2 mora's, and my multitool, my paracord, and my bankline, and my gps, etc etc,

  • @chuck_howard
    @chuck_howard 6 лет назад +2

Not sure if they would allow the poncho but the list includes rain jacket and rain pants.
They seem to be letting some folks such as Fowler, get away with slight mods of the list.
I can tell you from working outdoors for most of my life a poncho is far better than a rain jacket or rain coat.
Not even Gore-tex does as it claims and keep your from sweating but a poncho does.
Only bad thing is I can't use my poncho when riding my motorcycle and it's raining.
Then I have to use a rain jacket and pants. :(

Your cookset would count as 2 items, your allowed a 2lt pot and or a water bottle, but thats 2 items..... your fishing kit wouldn't be allowed either, your only allowed to take 300 meters of line and 25 hooks... no floats or flies etc ... i wouldn't take a poncho either,a 12x12 tarp, more coverage and more uses, dont forget where they were in Alaska has 12 feet of rain a year, and where they are now in Patagonia they get 8 feet of rain a year, you need maximum coverage to keep you and your gear dry,or your head starts going all over the place mate, you wouldn't be able to have the dry bag either ... them ferro rods are good,i mate a video last night of one i made that i cant use,i do have a bigger one than the 1/2" ones though lol so really you have about 15 items there, need to cut back a few to 10 lol
