  • Today I am putting an IBM x3550 M2 and x3550 M3 in my second rack. Just on top of my IBM/Lenovo x3550 M4. We have a good look at the rails, and a quick look inside the servers.

    It was nice to see all server series in row! 👍
    About that air flow redirection plastic - behind the screen, when You started to close the lid, I was saying: "Don't forget that plastic!" 😂 Great, that You finally noticed that..
    Excellent video, as always!

    I would really say, that you have switched the rails. That one you used for M3 are the M2's and vice versa- I made sure with my x3550m3 (7944-KEG) rails 🙂

    I have a x3550 Model 2 and a half. My M2 motherboard died so I replaced it with a M3 motherboard. Everything fits except the power/management connectors for the SAS backplane. I made a custom power cable, but couldn't sort out the management cable. As a result the RAID card numbers the disks Id 0,1,2,3,0,1 - which can be confusing.

      I am promoting Bargain Hardware in the UK : www.bargainhardware.co.uk/lenovo-thinkserver-rs140-4x-2-5-sff-configure-to-order
      The responses I have gotten, from other subscribers that has shopped there, has been surprisingly good. (way better than I had dared to hope for)
      I have made a deal with Bargain Hardware, which means that if you use the promo code "myplayhouse" at checkout,, you get 5% off.

    Morten, I know you like this stuff, as IT guys it's fun but let's be honest, nobody in his right mind is going to purchase these old servers anymore because of the power consumption and crazy power prices, and people that do have not thought it through. Even years ago it was not worth it, now it's just suicide! I've always used self built hardware as my servers, but even now that consumes too much power. I have had to turn off a fairly new core i7 11700, 64 GB, Virtual Machine server because it uses about 75+ Watts 24/7. Now i'm running some VM's on a chinese mini-pc (only 8 GB of mem cpu N5100) which i intented to use for kodi playback this saves me 60 Watt's that's like 525 Kwh a year and about 360 Euro on power. Then i have my fileserver with 12 disks (mainly 8-16 TB per disk) that also runs more VM's now but it takes up to 90-120 Watts which is still about 875 kwh/yr and is bleeding me dry! I also have my workstation with monitors which is on 14 hrs a day, uses about 80-130 Watts can't turn that off because that is the system i'm working on. I have 5 switches and a pfsense box wich i alreadyt turned off... because it really adds up.
    I'm seriously thinking cutting down to a NAS with 2-4 disks. I also have a synology 1815 that is only on when using backups that i could put 8 disks in, but it still uses 70 Watt's so would not save much. So either i get a newer NAS device with a more power efficient cpu (720+920+/923+ something like that) or i find a way to get my server down in power usage, maybe take out some disks, use less VM's, look in to docker. If i don't do this, i end up paying 800-900 Euro a month on my damn power bill. Even if you have solar panels, you are just waisting enormous amounts of power because of old crap. In the US power prices are still very cheap but that is not gonna last forever if democrats get their way. But we live in Europe, for us it's not gonna get any better because the EU wants us to use less and less power because of their green bullshit story. At some point they will even introduce a system where you have to pre-purchase power, yes i'm not kidding!!

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  Год назад +1

      If you are selling your Ferrari or Lamborghini for next to nothing now the fuel prices has gone up,, do let me know.
      You can still have power hungry stuff to play with,, the 24/7 stuff, you need to be smart about!

    • @csparty11
      @csparty11 Год назад

      @@MyPlayHouse Well if you would like a 16 yr old Opel Astra i could do you a solid. 😀The fuel is still affordable, about 2 euro's it's not cheap but i can still manage that. But electricity and gas is the main problem here and just because the EU want it to be a problem. (let's be clear about that) And the people who have electric cars now they are so f*cked also the ones that switched to heat pumps like you have, let's just say, they are not happy! Like i said the EU is planning to change the way everybody gets their power, even with solar panels the netting(?) will disappear and you won't get much back on power you deliver back to the grid and even if you use a small amount of grid power (at night for example) you will pay large amounts because they will make power more expensive at those times. And you will have to buy a certain amount of volume to be able to use or deliver back power. (that system will launch in Belgium at first i believe but will continue to other countries) No matter what the EU promises, they are totally fucking everybody over. And ofcourse media will not tell you about this because they are all pro-EU.
