One thing that I think helps is doing the first splatter off the project. That lets some of the gloopier big drops get off the brush first, then go over your actual project. Every time you refill your brush do another small tap off, and that really helps me with the big blotches.
I've been crafting for many yeats with many mediums. Ive found the key is to let my perfectionist tendencies go. Splatter is by nature uneven and uncontrolled. Practice to get what you can live with. Then embrace the result and be happy. Don't beat yourself up ovet things you will never be able to control. And alwaus remember to have FUN!
You never disappoint! I really like you experiment on splattering! I have trouble as well and now I know where I was going wrong! I learn something from you every video! Thanks so much.
One thing I noticed. You hit the brush with your finger. You get a much better splatter pattern if you hit your finger with the brush. Thanks for sharing
I’m sitting here and suddenly can’t remember which way I do it! (My guess is left holding, right tapping… just because I am excessively right handed and it’s the working hand. But now I will have to go get some brushes and check it out!
Krafters Cart in Auckland now stocks a few Gina K stamps and inks so I’ve started buying them from there. It’s a bit cheaper than buying from the US, what with the international shipping charges and the terrible exchange rate! Sometimes you have to wait for a while with KC though as items are often out of stock.
I have had troubles like Julie.... I do most of my splattering with watercolour pan paint and for me, wetter is better. I also find scraping the brush off a sharp angle works well for my flicks. I can never get your tapping technique to work. Funny really because it looks so easy. I also prefer a brush that holds enough water! Trial and error right! Splatter stamps are great when i dont want to risk any damages my piece!! Thanks Natasha!
I don't splatter, or more correctly, I haven't splattered. I do really like the look and it's about time I started to incorporate splatters into my cards. Your splatters do add to your beautiful blue card.♥️🇨🇦♥️
Great demonstration! I'm not a fan of spatters because I worry I will ruin the card. You've shown that with some practice it can add a lot of interest. Love your card. Gina K stamps are always beautiful ❤️
Beautiful card. Splatters add so much interest to this one. Thanks for trying out different brushes and inks for us. I guess the real trick is to try with what we have on hand. For those of us who are still spot challenged, there are various "grunge"-type stamps that can help. :)
A couple of the English ladies I watch here on RUclips do splatter with Posca pens. Make sure the nib is flowing well then tap on your finger or the side of another pen for a sharper tap and they do a lovely fine splatter - great for stars or snow. I haven't tried it yet as I don't have poscas but they do make it look so easy and effective!
I agree that you have to make sure you have to have enough water. Also for small Splatter do not hit the brush too hard. Practice on scratch paper to see if you are tapping to roughly. Light firm taps will minimize blobs.
My best advice to Julie is to not aim for perfection and enjoy what she gets, most if not all of our card recipients will love our creations regardless of what we think of them! 😊
So glad you did this video. I am going to add splatter to my Christmas cards this yr for the 1st time. It's kind of intimidating but willing to give it a try. 😊
I have a ‘pizza box’ from a craft order that I use for splatters and sprays to protect my work surface from getting splattered all over. Just lift the lid and voilà, spatter booth!
Fun comparison, TY! Never thought to do the splatters first before ink blending…! I got so frustrated with my attempts that I bought a couple “splatter“ stamps!! But have not found the perfect way to get metallic splatters… so far no ink pads I have tried compare to lunar pastes or metallic watercolors for the shine….. Continuing to try for a successful way to add those to the stamps!! Letting go of perfection, not so easy! 🤪🙄🤣🤣
i do not make spatters very well, but watch out for my pens! my colors are more limited but i do okay......ranger makes a line of really nice pens in a couple of sizes
I must admit my splatters aren’t always perfect and end up with big globs, that’s why I cheat and have a texture stamp set that looks like paint splatters so I can’t go wrong 😉 Thanks for showing us the various techniques and that gorgeous card. I really need to get a silhouette stamp 😊❤
Thank you so much. That was helpful. What an awesome card! I also wonder why not water colors or dye type paints/colored pencils? That is my favorite for backgrounds and spatters. You can adjust the intensity, too. But, it sounds like she wants uniformity. Spray does sound better for that. I don't know if water colors would work for that. They might clog the sprayer.
I never thought of putting splatter on first. That could be ideal if there is a chance the splatter just might ruin the card. And now I must dig out the spatter brush, toothbrush, fan brush, and stencil brush and experiment. I never splatter anymore because my splatter never does what I ask of it. My issue is consistency and getting the size 'I' want. 'Splatter should be random' I hear people say. Not mine, I say. It has to be randomly exact, it's my art anyways.. Splatter is great! Anyone can happily splatter. Getting the splatter you want, now that's the problem! Try saying splatter 5 times in a row very fast after reading this post without splattering 😅.
Julie, you may be holding the brush too close to your paper. I’ve found that if I hold the brush further away from the paper, i seem to have better control over the splatter.
I’m a day late, but I didn’t see anyone else commenting about this. Maybe because it’s so obvious! The biggest difference I saw with the splatter was how much territory was covered. Big brush: more color. Which is a good thing to know. 😉
You tap the brush with your finger, but I don’t have success with that. I hold the brush in one hand and tap it on a finger of the other hand. I’ve also had some success using brushes and flicking paint from the top of an acrylic block, experimenting with different angles and different brushes.
I guess the nature of the technique is its unpredictability. If I want splatters, I have to live with the risk of blotches. My solution for the odd blotch or two is to strategically place focal points, sentiment strips or bling. Try that, it covers a multitude of sins without the need to bin the entire project 😊 Kind regards from Germany, Nicola
Before I add splatters to a completed card, I try it on copy paper first. That way I see what I will get before ruining my card. Postcard pens provide the best splatter for me, but if I am really concerned, I have added them by hand. It is really time consuming less time than starting over.
Did I miss what type of paper you are using? That would indeed have an impact too. Sad we think there has to be "perfect" splatter technique and results.
I'm a little confused here, you said you are working from Darkest to Lightest with your blending (@ 12:11).... but I'm viewing it the other way :( Is this my error ? Have I miss understood you, cause I swear, I see you going from Lighter to Darker ;) Sorry if it has been mentioned earlier, I have not been able to read all comments just yet :(
This was a nice experiment! ❤ What also effects the splatters are the height you hold the brush at and if you want opaque splatters or not. Some colours absorb other colours in a painting. I have seen watercolourists flick the brush tip hairs very soft and gently against the painting for splatters and it gave very small, beautiful splatters. Posca pens are good for splatters in your choice of colour, but can be a little unpredictable in where the splatters end up. Preferably they're hit with a brush, a pen or your hand. Dr Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White is expensive (at least in my country 😳 ) but lasts a very long time. That is if you want white splatters. Copic Opaque White is even more expensive 🫣, but is supposed to be good for splattering. Dina Wakley's gloss sprays are good for splatterings with the spray tube itself (and brushes) if you don't mind the glossy effect. If you want to use white acrylics Titanium White is opaque. Both Ranger and Liquitex has special splatter brushes, and Liquitex has two different models - one flat and the other round. 😇🩵🙏🙌

I love your card, for its simplicity, Natasha. The spatters gives that extra ‘wow’ effect that it needs, to stand out ! ❤
The card is gorgeous and thanks for the splatter tips Natasha!
Absolutely beautiful!
Love you show user questions/issues and ways to possibly solve them.
In your wonderful efforts to help a crafter, you ended up with a gorgeous card.
Thank you Natasha 😊 x
Thank you for showing us how to get a good splat. Loved throwing. soft, sweet card
Natasha thanks for sharing this video. Very good advice

Very helpful Natasha thank you
Beautiful card!
I'm like Julie and think my splatters are never right. Maybe we're just too hard on ourselves!
thanks for all you do for us!
Great video all around. I love silhouettes on a colorful background. 😊
Great lesson. I too have trouble with my splatters. Thanks for sharing. Lovely card btw. ❤️🇨🇦
For those with arthritis in their hands, try tapping the brush on the edge of a ruler or pencil. I've found that works well for me.
You never disappoint! I really like you experiment on splattering! I have trouble as well and now I know where I was going wrong! I learn something from you every video! Thanks so much.
Keep doing what you’re doing! It’s wonderful to have you answering viewers and group member questions!
Beautiful Card and Tutorial
What a pretty card ❤️❤️
LOVE THIS!
You are the best craft teacher I know.
Thank you, that is such a lovely compliment xx Natasha
Thank you, Natasha. I thought this was a very helpful splatter demonstration using different products - and as always, the card was fabulous 🌻🌻
How easy was that card! Love it. I’d never thought of blending ink over splatter. Great effect! Thank you ☺️
Lovley card again .i find a small fan brush works well for splatters xx
One thing I noticed. You hit the brush with your finger. You get a much better splatter pattern if you hit your finger with the brush. Thanks for sharing

Thank you for always trying to teach us techniques and helpful hints! Always enjoy your videos and try never to miss one ❤️
I have struggled with splatters and I believe the lack of enough water was the issue. Thanks
I love your videos and get great ideas. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.❤️

Great video Natasha!! I struggle with splattering too so this video was very helpful!! Thank you so much!!
Gorgeous ❤

Great card, Natasha, and such a creative way to make splatters the main idea for the card!! In awe.
Thank you Natasha!, it was very good advice! I love Gina K Designs. I especially enjoy her stamp tv on Tuesday nights and Thursday afternoons. 🥰🥰

Another thing to try is a stiffer brush and use it to flick the paint off the edge of an acrylic block

*have enough water
Gorgeous card. I find lots of water is the key to good even splatters. I tend to use Distress Oxides or pigment inks as I get a better splatter.
I love it when you do the experiments for us. Thanks so much. ♥️
Hi Natasha. Fantastic video. Stupendous card. I absolutely love it. TFS. God bless. ❤❤❤
I would try flat brushes versus the round brushes you were using. I think the wide flat brush might work differently.
My best advice to Julie is to not aim for perfection and enjoy what she gets, most if not all of our card recipients will love our creations regardless of what we think of them! 😊
❤it!
So glad you did this video. I am going to add splatter to my Christmas cards this yr for the 1st time. It's kind of intimidating but willing to give it a try. 😊
So very helpful!! Natasha, your channel is the best!! I am always learning something new!!

Helpful tips Tasha, thank you. Your card is lovely! tfs.x
Natasha, Thank you for this informative video ❣️I think I understand ❤

Fab card, love the splatter tests, thanks for sharing.
I kinda think the shape plays a part as well. I use a fan brush and it seems to make more splatters, and a wider range of spray if that makes sense!
For uniformity, maybe drawing or dotting them on with a gel pen might help?
Great card as always! Loved your demonstration.
Thank you for sharing ❤
Great helps. THANKS 😊
I never thought of putting splatter on first. That could be ideal if there is a chance the splatter just might ruin the card. I think perfection is in the eye of the beholder. It is just card making, for goodness sake.
I wonder if the Tim Holtz splatter brush would help her
I rarely splatter, but a fan brush works best for me.
I’m a day late, but I didn’t see anyone else commenting about this.

Don't hit the paint brush too hard if you're wanting a fine splatter
Great comparisons but I am still afraid to splatter on a card that is almost finished in case I make a mess!
I agree with the comment below. The less fluid the less blobs. Splatter off the project first.
Great…I personally find the fan brush the best…but don’t overload it…
I guess the nature of the technique is its unpredictability. If I want splatters, I have to live with the risk of blotches. What is a postcard pen?
@@suecooper3082 It is a Posca pen. Please forgive as I don’t always catch auto-correct.
