- Here's an interview with Jim McCarty - the original drummer of the Yardbirds. We talk about his three bandmates - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Jim and I will be doing future lessons/sound-alikes on a few hits by the Yardbirds.
Pachelli's channel is starting to be one of the coolest places to hang out on RUclips !
Jim McCarty is a living book of history. What a wonderful idea to interview this legendary Yardbirds drummer. Thanks to Mike and more of that stuff.
Starting? Where have you been( 😍
Loved this and love the history parts of the videos you’re putting up here. I’d love to see a video of your history and how are you got started. These are really wonderful tutorials. Thank you so much.
One of the most delightful interviews I’ve heard on RUclips. No pretense with him at all….I always thought the Yardbirds never got the respect due them
WONDERFUL interview Mike! I had the honor of having Jim McCarty on my humble show last year and he couldn't have been more lovely. A true gentleman.
Amazing to hear these stories not from a book but from someone's actual memories. History just looked like today once, I guess!
Wow! What a riveting interview…Mr. McCarty was a great drummer on a lot of classic recordings and had the best seat in the house to the three best English guitarists Of the era! Loved this interview
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks, Mike! This interview is a treasure. The Yardbirds are one of my favourite bands. It's great to hear Jim McCarty talk about his experience being in the band.
Keith Relf died so very young. When I first heard them I was drawn to his distinct voice and superb harmonica playing. Very enjoyable video, I want to hear more. Thank you!
What a great sense of humor. À pleasure to be around and make music with I'm sure .
Can hardly wait for the Yardbirds sound alikes, love the Yardbirds
Awesome interview, Mike. And those first two Renaissance albums Jim made with Keith Relf are fantastic too.
As Jim mentioned "For your Love" written by Graham Gouldman who went on to be the Bass player/writer in 10cc
What a charming, wonderful gentleman. An old Yardbirds fan here appreciates this high-quality interview.
Excellent interview..what stories he tells.....
WQW! What a fantastic interview Mike! Never knew that Eric, Jeff & Jimmy all played guitar for the Yardbirds! Jim seems like a really nice man & you are very lucky to have him as your neighbor! So looking forward to you playing together & hoping that you do some more interviews with him! Thank you so much for making these videos! 👍👍👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Mike, this is amazing! I turned many friends on the Yardbirds when I was a kid in the 80s. We even played some Yardbirds songs in our "dorm band" in college. Partly because of your lessons, I've been playing a lot more and even doing some mini-gigs as part of "The Rock Camp Experience" here in Minneapolis. Think I'll suggest doing a Yardbirds camp! You're a terrific interviewer, by the way! And Jim seems like a great chap--you're lucky to have him as a neighbor! Thanks!!!
Great interview mike!
The Yardbirds were a great band!
I can listen to Jim telling stories for hours!
"Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" is one of my favorites
What a treat….I have loved the Yardbirds since the 1960s….great interview…
Amazing band, great drummer, and a beautiful interview Mike. Congratulation !!!
Thanks for this! We used to cover Yardbirds back in the 60s. It's especially good to hear from the drummer! :)
Mike, congratulations on the historic interview. It's great to hear the stories of those who lived and made things happen in the 60's. I read Eric Clapton's autobiography and the things Jim said have everything to do with it. May there be more interviews like this one. It would be cool if you could make a sound with it! Hugs from Brazil.
Nice to listen to Jim's stories. Back when the Yardbirds first hit the US Billboard charts we were so enamored with this brave new sound Within a few short months we had put together a copy band covering all of their recorded material. I think the best lineup was the Jeff and Jimmy co lead guitars.
All I can say it WOW! This was a great interview. The Yardbirds played, pardon the pun a very instrumental part in my development as a guitarist. I'm still trying to work out some of Beck's Yardbird licks so I am eagerly looking forward to your tutorials. Merci mon Michel !!!
Now we know, Jim McCarty is a follower of this channel, too! Many greetings from here to you and the other Yardbirds.
Thanks for interviewing this legend, Mike. I love the mix of content on your channel. Great stuff!
Wonderful interview. It was the song Heart Full of Soul got me started on guitar in the mid 1960's
Amazing I finally get to see the drummer that got me into rock ‘n’ roll. No not Ringo Starr yes, Jim McCarthy.. Jim your a better man than I.
long live the YardBirds.
I saw the Yardbirds in Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars tour in 1966! I was living on England AFB in Alexandria La. at the time and was around 13. I was beginning to play guitar at the time and had a brand new fender mustang. I beleive this might have been the first show with Page on guitar. The band had a very bluesy sound and very cool look ! I also remember Bobby Hebb climbing the fence with his guitar on his back and Sam the Sham! It still remains a magical memory to me....great interview!
I saw them in Chicago / USA.
Jeff Beck and " new unknown 2nd guitarist " , Jimmy Page . Civic Opera House , 1966. My 1st concert .
Great to hear Jim, looking and sounding well. Great memories of Jim in the excellent Ruthless Blues with another Top guitarist John Knightsbridge which was highlighted by a brilliant Yardbirds gig at London Marquee in '83 👌👍
Love it!!! What a great interview Mike. Jim seems like a great guy and neighbour.
what a lovely interview. Thank you very much.
Geeeeeez….a living witness of those things that rock legends wouldn’t talk about!
Nice interview, Jim! Besitos.
It’s lovely to capture the memories of these guys…..and so important!
It's nice to hear the stories from some of the senior band members. Nice job Mike and great to hear your stories Jim.
Awesome! Can't wait to see the collaboration to come. 😎
Thanks for sharing! 🍻
Great interview Mike. Happy to see Jim appreciates what you're doing along with the rest of us. You da man.
I appreciate that!
Well done, Mike! What a wonderful engaging interview.
Lovely interview. Such a humble man from such an influential band.
Just heard them (on YT) playing in 2023- McCarty the only original left- but they sound FANTASTIC! on a boat tour.
Great interview , thank you Mike .
Nice interview. Like to hear Heart Full of Soul.
What a great interview Mike and thank you Jim.
This was a great interview, loved hearing all these stories from Jim
Great interview Mike. From Youngstown to the South of France! You’ve come a long way!
Jim seems like such a personable guy. Fantastic interview , Mike.
What a nice surprise!!!!!!
Love the interview! 👍👍🥁😎
Wonderful interview! I’m going to find myself listening to The Yardbirds music now! Looking forward to the collaboration between Mike and Jim!
Topham > Clapton > Beck > Page > Pacelli
Great interview! Huge yardbirds fan here! Some of the best sounds and riffs of the mid sixties.
Love you, Jim! Thanks for so much great music!
Wow awesome interview!
Excellent! 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Great interview Mike. I saw The Yardbirds with Jeff Beck at London's Marquee Club in the sixties. I also The Jim McCarty Band a few times at the 100 Club in the early nineties. I bought Five Live Yardbirds back in the sixties - it's one of my favourite albums.
I once had the great fortune to play guitar with Jimmy Page at a mutual friend's birthday bash. It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life as when it came to doing a guitar break I played the biggest load of rubbish you could ever concoct. Nerves, y'see, one of my heroes...went to pieces. Jimmy just laughed and came up to me at the bar later and just said "I know, I was there once before"...gentleman!!!
Amazing...thank you!!!!!
Glad you liked it!
@@MPfrance Years ago I was at a showcase, for the A&R staff, at Columbia Studios NYC. At the time I didn't realize that the guy sitting next to me was Paul Atkinson...guitarist for the Zombies! Man, I wish I could go back in time.....
this is brilliant, thanks so much!!
Thank you so much Mike and Jim! I love to hear those stories. I’ve always been a huge Yardbirds-fan and I think McCartney was as well. That ”Taxman”-solo sounds like he had been listening quite a bit to Jeff Beck.
Great interview, Mike! I met Jim in Peoria Illinois back in the late 80's at a record convention. It was cool, everyone was in line to meet him, he was out in a lobby talking to my wife for a half hour, smoking a ciggie. Very personable guy, I'll never forget his kindness. I asked him about recording 'I'm Not Talkin", one of my favorites. So cool and down to earth fellow...
Outstanding, Michael! Thank you and Jim for sharing. Can't wait for what's next!
Enjoyed this interview. The host has an easygoing style and was prepared. I'll be interested in checking out more. Nice that he gave a nod to the first lead guitarist, "Top" Topham. And although Clapton/Beck/Page are what the vast majority of people are interested about with The Yardbirds, it would have been nice to spend even a couple minutes to ask Jim about Keith and Chris and Paul. They all had key roles. Thanks.
Mike this is a great interview, because there's hardly any interviews online.Having a Rave Up was my most favorite album back in the day..wore it oit.Jeff Beck playing really turned my head around..thanks Michael Pachelli...!!!!
Wow Mike, this is great news that you and Jim are getting together and will be playing music. I've idolized the Yardbirds since the '60s and their original albums that I own are still some of my most cherished possessions. I saw a version of the Yardbirds with Jim and Chris play a club in Vancouver Canada during the 1990s and it was a fabulous show and well remembered.
I forgot that i saw Jim McCarty and Keith Relf with the first version of Renaissance open up for The Kinks at the Boston Tea Party late '69 or early '70....great show ! he is still at it ..
Lovely man, so modest. I'm looking forward to the musical session now.
I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed this.
Great interview Mike. I cut my teeth on Yardbirds, Beatles, Animals. It was a real treat to watch this. Can’t wait for the sound-a-like.
Wonderful interview. Paul Samwell-Smith got involved in producing the Yardbirds records (presumably with Roger the engineer on occasion ;-), and eventually put down the bass to do that full-time, i believe.
Great Interview! Love it.
Good Stuff Mike..!!!
Great interview, Mike! It was cool hearing background stories about the Yardbirds and the music scenes in London from back in the day from Mr. McCarty.
Wow. Awesome interview. Hope to see more interviews. Thx Mike
Lovely-thank you!
Can't wait for what Yardbirds lessons you come up with for us, Mike. Ironically, I too have been revisiting their songs because seeing them in 1966 caused me to want to play electric guitar in the first place.
Looking forward to your Yardbird covers Mike, any chance you could do "Puzzles" from the Jimmy Page era.
Mike, excellent interview and I am excited to see what develops.
like many have said what a great interesting interview....
Mike! Great to see you and interviewing a music great like Jim McCarty!- Much Peace!-- The only thing that would make me smile more is you and Phil K. talking-singing- and playing.
Yeah was not expecting that, as an old guy who grew up with that music as my background this really is a welcomed treat.
Cheers just brilliant.
Great video great guy. Saw the Yardbirds here in Buffalo a few years back got a chance to talk with him & their bassist at the time one of my favorite bassists Kenny Aaronson. Band sounded great & those two guys were very humble & great to talk to.
That was enjoyable and educational! Thanks Mike & Jim!!! 💥🎸🎼
Very cool Mike! Any other neighbors like Jim?😄👍👍
The Yardbirds’ “New York City Blues” was my first exposure to a blues format, and I learned some of my first guitar licks from that song. Obviously, this is the music I grew up with, but I didn’t have access to any of the back stories at the time. Thanks for helping me learn more about the behind-the-scenes activities of the time.
Awsome wow what incredible talent and a classy gentleman great interview
Wow Mike! What a great interview. Wish it were longer. If he’s your neighbor, you gotta get him back on for a jam! Thanks Mike
Thanks for this Mike! Excellent stuff. Much appreciated and sure fills in some holes in "the history". Thanks to you too Jim. Love your drumming on that Renaissance live video of Kings and Queens. Amongst others of course.
You are doing Jeff’s Boogie? Can’t wait to see that.
Excellent interview with a legendary rocker my friend!
Superb interview with a rock legend!
Great interview, Mike! Very enlightening and also very entertaining. You are a great interviewer as well as a great musician. 👏
Absolute Gent!
got lucky enough to come across an authentic five live yardbirds released on columbia over in uk. of course it's known as being the earliest known recording of EC. i will say all the band members on the evening it was recorded played well and truly out of their skin. jim's a resonating force the times I've had to listen. it's quickly become one of my top five fave live recorded albums.
Interesting that Jim heard "Yesterday" during their run at the Hammersmith Odeon in late '64/early '65, which is earlier than that song is said to have been composed! George Martin once said he first heard it in '64, and everyone thought he'd got it wrong, but maybe not.
Great interview! And it's funny that Jeff couldn't care less about his appearance back then compared to later when he wore the coolest outfits!
Mike, this was so good! And I'm super excited that you are going to do some Jeff Beck stuff! Boy, this all brings back the memories! I had all the yardbird albums as they came out - got Truth as soon as it came out - and couldn't help but notice how led Zeppelin's first album tracked Beck's Truth album in content. I never saw Eric or Jeff, but I saw Jimmy at at the Atlanta Pop Festival a couple months - I think it was - after LZ's first album came out; just 20 feet from the stage. So! Time to get the strat tuned up in prep for your Beck video(s)! All the best! (in French) 🙂
The Yardbirds final album "Little Games" also tracked roughly the same content as the first LZ album.
Nice interview!
Looking forward to that collaboration!
Great video. Very informative and enjoyable!
Looking forward to some Yardbirds recreations with you guys ! Happenings Ten Years Time Ago ?
I saw the Yardbirds live in about 1967 in a small local teen center. Jeff Beck had a Vox amp he carried and he plugged the original VOX V816 Distortion Booster and Clapton all the others came out and they did Heart of Soul as the opener. I had no clue.how great live sound was until Beck did that Riff
super cool! legendary life and such a charming man. great interview. If you ask a music streaming service to stream yardbirds you also get music from ex band members too and you'll be digging it all night long (like the train rollin). I also love Renaissance, especially their live album. can't wait for Mike's Yardbirds lesson with early Beck...you're right NO ONE can play his later stuff
Can't wait to see you guys do the classic Yardbirds "rave up" crescendo like in I'm a Man, Smokestack Lightning and I Ain't Done Wrong.
