I am sharing this video to show you how I prepare this Fiddle Fern Salad. As what my lola (grandma) told me, this kind of fern grows in the wilderness. They grow beside streams where there is cold temperature and mostly beside the running streams or river waters.
This is very easy and quick to prepare. Just four ingredients mix all together in a bowl of ferns then, voila! A very delicious crunchy, hearty salad!
I call it a bizarre dish for its characteristics. It's seldom seen on the market. It's from the forest, wilderness. And the appearance is just like a fern from the garden of fairies! Just feeling tho' hehe!

Ang aking pag gawa na paraan sa pako na salad ay mayroong luya, red pepper, onions, red tomatoes, sibuyas, kalamansi at may gata at may halong guso at carrots sarap para may taste lagyan ko nang 1 tbsp. na white sugar paborito nang pamilya ko.

My 1st time to taste this vegie is when we visited my Grandpa at Aurora province back in 1989. Then at Benguet in 2009 together with my cousins at our Mine Camp. You can just pick tops of this in some provinces but pricy in Cities... Wen, naimas daytoy ken nasustansha Madam.

The very common edible fern is the Ostrich fern, they grow fiddleheads. You have to know which kind/variety are edible, some species of ferns release spores that can cause poisoning through oral ingestion. They normally grow in moist environment & doesn’t require a lot of care. After a rainy day you can see more of those fiddleheads. There is a farm in Luzon, I can exactly remember the town where the farmer direct marketed those ferns for 500 Pesos a kilo, mostly to high end restaurants. He harvest them every other 2 days. In fact it made him so financially stable & was able to send two children to college with his fern income. The taste is somewhere between asparagus, broccoli or spinach. Personally, I will steam them to preserve the nutrients, instead of leaving it in the water when boiled. Season according to your preference like a mix of grated ginger, diced onions, diced seeded tomatoes, lemon, lime or vinegar, fish sauce instead of salted/fermented fish, sliced chili for a kick or just anything that will please your taste buds.

I used to press the sliced tomato a little bit on the lemon juice, same with the syrup of bagolng ( or fried dilid), and ginger. Press them together before pouring it over the pako and mix them.
