How Rivers Were Built In Libya Right Under The Sahara. Gaddafi's Unbelievable Project

  • Two thirds of our planet is covered in water, but there isn't nearly as much fresh water. Only 3% of the world's water is fresh and it isn't distributed evenly at all.
Many countries have a freshwater deficit and that's a serious problem for several of them.
A problem that's solved in different ways. The most ambitious project was attempted by Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. His impressive creation is known as the Great Man-Made River.

@@guillermococofrito9196 Yes , the entire revolution vs Gaddafi begun because he saw that the "Petro-dolar" didnt work. The oil prices ware far to unstable and caused economic downfaul in Lybia. He had a great idea - switch the african league from petro-dolar to the gold standard. He got Nigeria , Egypt , Algeria, Angola and Sudan on board. That was a major treat to the US econamy (it would of devalued the USD). So surprise surprise , several months after nagotiatons started - a small revolution started arround Bengazi.

I am from India. I saw the Libyan Civil war on TV. I saw people rushed to the hospitals, we also see fighting in the streets. Eventhough i saw much carnage, i could also see that Libyans enjoyed a relatively high standard of living. Their hospital ER, the streets, eventhough ransacked was better than all their neighbours. I came to a realisation that Gaddafi might not be the man the West said he was. Its such a shame that a great project for the nation is in ruins.

As a person who lived in Libya for 2 years I found Gathaffi was a truly ambitious nation wide leader who had a dream about Africa. Back in 1999 I saw Libya was ahead of the majority of Arab countries. He had a dream where Africa is the new Europ and it was clear by opening borders to all of the neighbouring countries and that was super brave along side with the plan of a united currency that caused a major threat to the world leader. He was a great leader born in the wrong time. Never ever seen a homeless people, beggers, or any kind of needy people. Free food was being given away by the government. Not the war with tchad over some land or the support for Idi Amin or some bombs planted in nightclubs or planes. He was ok with Gaddafi for his politics inside libya. The only problem for him was a possible Gaddafi dynasty - that Saif the second son would take over from his dad.
There were huge projects inside libya but often without libyan jobs. Most workers in the oilfields were foreigners. First europeans and north americans, then the libyans would take the positions. But most work was done by Filipinos, Thai and Bangladeshi. Also egyptian kopts. He set up free hospital and medical and many other public services but when he wanted to unite the African nations and talked of a gold supported economy for Africa the west had to get rid of him. Who started all of this? Well Gaddafi came to power and immediately set about telling America to remove their military bases from Libya. This didn’t go down too well because the US were also taking oil so they turned around and bombed Tripoli and Benghazi and in doing so killed Gaddafi s daughter and the rest is history. While I was there I read a paper called “ the Maltese double cross”, it had to do with lots of political anomaly and the bombing of the Lockerbie plane crash, I still don’t believe Libya has anything to do with that.

Moving Water is one of the most powerfully transformative things we can do. The idea seems to be so big that no one has considered it possible but I believe it is not only possible but it is necessary. For over a century the fossil water contained in aquifers has been pumped out to feed agriculture, industry and municipal water needs. The natural water cycle cant refill fossil water deposits that were filled 10,000 years ago when the glaciers melted after the last ice age. Without refilling these aquifers there is not much of a future for the region of the United states. As a result ground levels in some areas of the San Joaquin Valley have subsided by more than 30 feet. Similar fossil water depletion is happening in other regions all around the world. TBM and tunneling technology has matured and further developments in the industry are poised to speed up the tunneling process and it's these tunnels that are the only way to move large volumes of water from the ocean inland. The water is moved inland to areas where it can be desalinated in geothermal plants producing clean water and power. In many cases the water will recharge surface reservoirs where it will be used first to make more hydro power before being released into rivers and canal systems. It's very important however to not stop tunneling at these first stops but to continue several legs until the water has traveled from the ocean under mountain ranges to interior states. Along the way water will flow down grade through tunnels and rise in geothermal loops to fill mountain top pumped hydro batteries several times before eventually recharging several major aquifers. What I am proposing is essentially reversing the flow of the Colorado River Compact. Bringing water from the coast of California first to mountaintop reservoirs then to the deserts of Nevada and Arizona and on to Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. This big idea looks past any individual city or states problems and looks at the whole and by using first principles identifies the actual problem and only solution. Political will is the biggest hurdle to accomplishing big projects. Especially in California and after blowing $100 billion on a high speed train to nowhere. I think it is obvious to most people that something drastic needs to be done to solve the water problem and that conservation only goes so fare. I would propose to fund the tunneling part of this solution with a system similar to the Permanent Wyoming Mineral Trust Fund is a type of permanent fund called a sovereign wealth fund (SWF). SWFs are typical government funding tools. They consist of investments and assets that the government is not allowed to cash out or deplete. However, while it can't touch the principal, the government normally has the right to spend any revenue these investments generate on appropriate functions and expenses. Each state, California, Nevada and Arizona and on to Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and of course Wyoming could place a small 2% tax on the energy sector and use those funds to invest in Geothermal energy projects and eventually the aqueduct can link up to those projects. There are already over 800 geothermal energy projects in California alone. The equation for my big solution is (ocean water brought inland through large underground aqueducts + combination geothermal and desalination plants = clean water and clean energy).

A British Materials consultant told me about how the Libyan Govt bought Stainless Steel tubes to carry all the artesian water from the Libyan desert to the coast for agriculture and industrial uses.
However, after some time, the tubes started corroding. Stainless Steel corroding? It was unheard of.
Then some smart chap realised that what gives SS its anticorrosive nature is a very thin layer of Chromium Oxide that forms on the surface of the steel, after the Chromium present in the steel alloy reacts with Oxygen in the atmosphere or dissolved oxygen in ordinary water.
The water from these Libyan Aquifers was remarkable in that it had no dissolved Oxygen, and consequently no Chromium Oxide layer could be formed on the steel, and thus, no protection against corrosion. Corrrosion was rapid in some places, like joints and stress zones.
Just wanted to share this fascinating bit of info.
