How Rivers Were Built In Libya Right Under The Sahara. Gaddafi's Unbelievable Project

- Two thirds of our planet is covered in water, but there isn't nearly as much fresh water. Only 3% of the world's water is fresh and it isn't distributed evenly at all.
Many countries have a freshwater deficit and that's a serious problem for several of them.
A problem that's solved in different ways. The most ambitious project was attempted by Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. His impressive creation is known as the Great Man-Made River.

Gaddafi was not a dictator. He was a great man and had the best vision for his country band Africa. Dictatorship was just a make believe by the western because he didn't let them have their way. Long live Mummar Gaddafi.
He was a fascist dictator, killed people as a dictator, and financed terrorist groups.
But it wasnt much of a problem until USA democrat elites didnt like his policies around gold.
@@guillermococofrito9196 Yes , the entire revolution vs Gaddafi begun because he saw that the "Petro-dolar" didnt work. The oil prices ware far to unstable and caused economic downfaul in Lybia. He had a great idea - switch the african league from petro-dolar to the gold standard. He got Nigeria , Egypt , Algeria, Angola and Sudan on board. That was a major treat to the US econamy (it would of devalued the USD). So surprise surprise , several months after nagotiatons started - a small revolution started arround Bengazi.

I am from India. I saw the Libyan Civil war on TV. I saw people rushed to the hospitals, we also see fighting in the streets. Eventhough i saw much carnage, i could also see that Libyans enjoyed a relatively high standard of living. Their hospital ER, the streets, eventhough ransacked was better than all their neighbours. I came to a realisation that Gaddafi might not be the man the West said he was. Its such a shame that a great project for the nation is in ruins.

As a person who lived in Libya for 2 years I found Gathaffi was a truly ambitious nation wide leader who had a dream about Africa. Back in 1999 I saw Libya was ahead of the majority of Arab countries. He had a dream where Africa is the new Europ and it was clear by opening borders to all of the neighbouring countries and that was super brave along side with the plan of a united currency that caused a major threat to the world leader. He was a great leader born in the wrong time. Never ever seen a homeless people, beggers, or any kind of needy people. Free food was being given away by the government. I was a young African in Libya in the late 70's.
A Libya where Education, Health care,Housing was a fundamental right for a Citizen and Col Gaddafi had extended the same to his many African brother's and sisters.Col Gaddafi restored dignity to the African and Libyan people after coming out of a ruthless Italian colonial and neo colonial. sphere. The narrator should in this day and age correct his narrative on Gaddafi, the very nature and facts of this great project should open his eye's to the true Nature of the Value and Contribution of Col Gaddafi to Libya and Africa.
That's true, and it was the supposedly great leader Barack Obama & Hilary Clinton (according to wikileaks revelations) that are directly responsible for the current destruction of Libya and what so so good about it.
It must be awful knowing your country was basically destroyed by two woke idiots.
There was no justification for it.
I so much agree that Gaddafi had his own downfalls the way he rulled. But the narrator today should look at libya and come on bro!! you still doubt Gadafi? see what happened after the war. Is that not enough proof of his leadership and ambition?

Gaddafi was only a dictator to the west and Europe. To the area where he lived, he was a legend and brought water and jobs and peace to his people.
Some libyan colleagues told me, 40% were against Gaddafi, 20% pro Gaddafi and 40% undecided. One libyan geologist told me, that he thought that Gaddafi kept an order over the unruly libyan tribes and he appreciated that. Not the war with tchad over some land or the support for Idi Amin or some bombs planted in nightclubs or planes. He was ok with Gaddafi for his politics inside libya. The only problem for him was a possible Gaddafi dynasty - that Saif the second son would take over from his dad.
There were huge projects inside libya but often without libyan jobs. Most workers in the oilfields were foreigners. First europeans and north americans, then the libyans would take the positions. But most work was done by Filipinos, Thai and Bangladeshi. Also egyptian kopts. Big housing quarters were constructed near Benghasi, a forest of appartment houses. done by a chinese company, with chinese workers.
@@mweskamppp I think main reason why many workers was not Libyan, because you need certain skills to do certain job, but there was not enough educated Libyans in those fields at that time, so he invited workers from other nations that had them. And as you mentioned, later they was more Libyan, because they were trained by those foreign workers.
@@juriscervenaks8953 I have been there. The actual work was still mostly done by foreigners. The libyans often just keep the chairs warm. Not all though, there are good libyan engineers too, but welding pipelines, digging trenches or building plants was still made by foreign work force. When there was still a european at the head of a department or just a part of the workforce it was working well, when it changed to all libyan it became significantly worse.

Gaddafi was a hero of the modern age. A real life true hero.
I was in Libya when this was being built. It was one of the greatest engineering projects of the century but the west could not leave Libya and Gadaffi alone. He set up free hospital and medical and many other public services but when he wanted to unite the African nations and talked of a gold supported economy for Africa the west had to get rid of him. Who started all of this? Well Gaddafi came to power and immediately set about telling America to remove their military bases from Libya. This didn’t go down too well because the US were also taking oil so they turned around and bombed Tripoli and Benghazi and in doing so killed Gaddafi s daughter and the rest is history. While I was there I read a paper called “ the Maltese double cross”, it had to do with lots of political anomaly and the bombing of the Lockerbie plane crash, I still don’t believe Libya has anything to do with that.
well the west could be a reason for that hell ya they many things to blame but they where never the one to shot him down Libyans did and for all as African we are the pros of our problem not them ...its basic fact
That is so sad
Moving Water is one of the most powerfully transformative things we can do. The idea seems to be so big that no one has considered it possible but I believe it is not only possible but it is necessary. For over a century the fossil water contained in aquifers has been pumped out to feed agriculture, industry and municipal water needs. The natural water cycle cant refill fossil water deposits that were filled 10,000 years ago when the glaciers melted after the last ice age. Without refilling these aquifers there is not much of a future for the region of the United states. As a result ground levels in some areas of the San Joaquin Valley have subsided by more than 30 feet. Similar fossil water depletion is happening in other regions all around the world. TBM and tunneling technology has matured and further developments in the industry are poised to speed up the tunneling process and it's these tunnels that are the only way to move large volumes of water from the ocean inland. The water is moved inland to areas where it can be desalinated in geothermal plants producing clean water and power. In many cases the water will recharge surface reservoirs where it will be used first to make more hydro power before being released into rivers and canal systems. It's very important however to not stop tunneling at these first stops but to continue several legs until the water has traveled from the ocean under mountain ranges to interior states. Along the way water will flow down grade through tunnels and rise in geothermal loops to fill mountain top pumped hydro batteries several times before eventually recharging several major aquifers. What I am proposing is essentially reversing the flow of the Colorado River Compact. Bringing water from the coast of California first to mountaintop reservoirs then to the deserts of Nevada and Arizona and on to Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. This big idea looks past any individual city or states problems and looks at the whole and by using first principles identifies the actual problem and only solution. Political will is the biggest hurdle to accomplishing big projects. Especially in California and after blowing $100 billion on a high speed train to nowhere. I think it is obvious to most people that something drastic needs to be done to solve the water problem and that conservation only goes so fare. I would propose to fund the tunneling part of this solution with a system similar to the Permanent Wyoming Mineral Trust Fund is a type of permanent fund called a sovereign wealth fund (SWF). SWFs are typical government funding tools. They consist of investments and assets that the government is not allowed to cash out or deplete. However, while it can't touch the principal, the government normally has the right to spend any revenue these investments generate on appropriate functions and expenses. Each state, California, Nevada and Arizona and on to Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and of course Wyoming could place a small 2% tax on the energy sector and use those funds to invest in Geothermal energy projects and eventually the aqueduct can link up to those projects. There are already over 800 geothermal energy projects in California alone. The equation for my big solution is (ocean water brought inland through large underground aqueducts + combination geothermal and desalination plants = clean water and clean energy).

I remember him telling me the stories, that he's been to the desert and dug out Wadi after Wadi (a term they used to refer to "a water source") in the middle of nowhere.

Gaddafi immediately reforming the country; giving back the people their land or by land reform, building modern hospitals, schools, free for all citizens.Families were given allowances, giving them jobs as well as sending them abroad to study. A British Materials consultant told me about how the Libyan Govt bought Stainless Steel tubes to carry all the artesian water from the Libyan desert to the coast for agriculture and industrial uses.
However, after some time, the tubes started corroding. Stainless Steel corroding? It was unheard of.
Then some smart chap realised that what gives SS its anticorrosive nature is a very thin layer of Chromium Oxide that forms on the surface of the steel, after the Chromium present in the steel alloy reacts with Oxygen in the atmosphere or dissolved oxygen in ordinary water.
The water from these Libyan Aquifers was remarkable in that it had no dissolved Oxygen, and consequently no Chromium Oxide layer could be formed on the steel, and thus, no protection against corrosion. Corrrosion was rapid in some places, like joints and stress zones.

If Libya was allowed to nationalized their resources, namely oil, then they could be one of the richest nations in the world. But outside western and now China influences will never let that happen, and the people will continue to be victims of more powerful nations.
Please focus on trade with ASEAN, we have fresh water mountains and clean tech energy, even the non-clean energy, our coal power plants have higher efficiency than global average. ASEAN nations must work with African nations.
US lost to Vietnam but the US used dna-damaging herbicide Agent Orange that caused generational deformations in children of Vietnam. Agent Orange was also used in Malaya by Britain. If the Europeans knew the extent of the ecosystem destruction their governments caused, hopefully they will murder their own governments if they had any shame. Kissinger, Clintons, Obama, Bush, Blair. We must know these names so we do not blame the clueless civilians who pay respect to these mass murderers, destroyers of the planets. We must teach these names.
I hope for ease of communication and trading between ASEAN and African nations. Libya can recover well.
Victim of themselves you mean. Nationalizing resources don't magically make everyone wealthy. Look at Venezuela.
All our Africa countries are victims and customers of the super power country's their scare if they lose Africa then they have no customer's no money 4 them and no one to bomb and rule
where has nationalization ever worked? every example has been a poorly run system. the ideal would have been hybrid. public company with some government-controlled shares. the project was always doom. Everybody always focuses on the resources a country has instead of the institutions and people., separation of powers, independent courts, the independent executive branch and government not run by one man. it was always going to fail just a matter of time. In other words he wanted to be the sole one who ruled over those african nations lol

I hope one day you can free yourself from your tyrannical leadership and make the world a better place

He was a genius and a great leader not a dictator like you said and NATO killed him and messed up Libya 😢
We hate it when you call him a dictator
"it would have provided stability and economical independence", two things USA can't tolerate.
the real reason behind the removal of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi is that he was in the process of establishing a single gold-backed currency for Africa called the Gold Dinar. Gaddafi's new plan for Africa would have meant an entirely new banking system for the continent which would have taken economic power away from the current western powerhouses and would have dealt a severe blow to the US Dollar-based monetary system.
Reminds me of the rumours floating around that the real reason ferdinand marcos from the philippines got coup'ed was because he was advocating for the creation of a gold backed "asian dollar" and that because he was reluctant to send troops to vietnam, a certain country did not like that at all.
let make this happen
I pray that someone or some people will continue his project for the greater good of people who are struggling in that continent , and the neighboring countries, Amen.
It is too late because the civil war and political tension is high…If it took $24 billion back then, the government has to be really stable to create such large amounts of money from taxpayers who are suffering as we speak…..
