- Here is an episode of the syndicated late night show Nightlife, hosted by David Brenner and consiting of a band led by Billy Preston. Frank Zappa is tonight's guest.
David Brenner was ahead of the times. This is pretty much how most the talk shows are now days, upbeat host vs. Carson's sedentary style.
The show's announcer was legendary Top 40 DJ Dan Ingram. He passed away a week ago and in the clip i heard, he did a really good job on Nightlife. In addition to his stints on WABC and WCBS-FM, he did the voice over for many commercials including Hungry Hungry Hippos but he never did any game shows. To me, he would have made a very good game show announcer bringing humor to audience warm ups and his ability to read prize copy. may he rest in peace.
The Night Life band was an incredible collection of legendary NYC Studio musicians and of course Billy Preston
That's me @ 0:21. Yep.
Were you doing that expressly for the show opening credits?
Zappa presentation begins at 07:37
THis is a rerun broadcast, as the last first run show aired in June 1987 of this one season late night show which couldn't compete with Carson, Letterman, or even the other one season wonder, Joan Rivers.
so what?
It couldn't compete because Brenner's humor couldn't be contained in such a way.
Kinda has the same intro, sound, and set as SNL

I actually watched this more than Letterman. I liked the casual style of the show. I didn't laugh at his jokes or anything. I would turn it off and then turn back on.
