  • Is the Russian annexation of Crimea colonialism? Or is it some new, hybrid form of expansion?
Before the occupation of Crimea and parts of Donbas, Russia could be called a neocolonial power with soft power policy and influence on the political system of the dependent country.
However, the occupation of Ukrainian territories automatically made Russia a nineteenth-century colonialist. Here are a few factors that speak eloquently about Russia's colonial policy towards Crimea
On paper, the occupation authorities of Crimea claim that the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar languages in the region have the same status as Russian. These statements, however, have been hiding a policy of total Russification of the peninsula throughout the years of annexation. It was only with the outbreak of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine that the occupation authorities of Crimea openly equated the Ukrainian language with extremist symbols.
