Malcolm, Great information. From the beginning years ago, I started painting with oil paints on large sized stretched canvas substrates. Never considered small canvas, also did not have extra funds to support my hobby, so there was a lot of detail brush work. Most of my work was on sizes 16" x 20" up to 24" x 30" and oft times larger. When my employment took me to working internationally, my painting came to a grinding halt. Now being retired, I returned to painting, however this time with acrylics on canvas. The largest being a 4' x 8' work on one 4' x 4' panel and two 2' x 4' panels. After that work , I downsized to 8" x 10" canvas panels to enable me to work more in an impressionist style while conserving paint. Even sold some of them. I am now working towards larger sizes for my work, all of it in acrylics, and still in the process of developing my style. Malcom, this is where you come in. I am glad that I found your website, as I have learned so much that has aided me in setting goals and and working towards improving my style...which is ongoing for sure. Thank you!!
Absolutely beautiful. Love the tip about possibly not having enough information for a large painting. Any tips on how to push through a large painting and not loose steam half way through. That seems to be my problem.
That is a real problem for me too - all I know is that when I research and test the subject it helps. If you lose steam, get out the big brush and cover as much territory as you can as quickly as you can. That will liven up the scene, give you progress and probably get rid of unnecessary details that are suffocating the scene. REMEMBER THE LIGHT! 😄
Thanks for all of your great demos. What kind of brush are you using in this one please? It doesn't look like hog bristle but it's hard to tell in fast speed. thanks
I'm very happy to follow your blog Malcolm, you inspire me! Just a question:what do you think about colours without toxical substances? I have headakes and I wonder if it would be fine or not to buy it. Thanks for your answer in advance. Gene, from Belgium
This was very interesting. I'm really drawn to painting big some day, but not quite sure if I'll be able to have enough patience to finish those paintings - time will tell 🤷♀️ Thank you very much Malcom for sharing so much of your knowledge. I really enjoy your content (here on RUclips, your blog, courses I've taken), recently especially the real time videos in the artists live membership. So much to learn from you. Again, thanks for sharing your painterly wisdom with others 🌸

Only white spirits for the beginning drawing. Then no added mediums are used.

If you can find water based oils like Cobra by Royal Talens then try those. I wear gloves and use good ventilation too.
