    Summary:
Quran explicitly talks about dog in 3 places.
    - People of the Cave had a dog, but they may have different shariah than ours
    - Example of a wild dog in the Quran
    - Quran (Surah Maida) allows Muslims to eat hunt that has been killed by their hunting dog, and training these dogs in hunting is an act praised by Allah. Therefore by allowing dogs to be kept for hunting, and allowing training these dogs, it means the owner and trainer has to come very close to the animal, touch them, pet them, earn their trust.
Is the dog as a whole najas?
Hadith about cleaning a dish licked by a bowl seven times, the first with sand.
    This denotes extra cleaning.
Shafi, Hambali - whole dog is najas
Hanafi - only saliva is najas
Maliki - dog is not najas, nothing of the dog is najas
So how does Maliki explain hadith?
    - just because you wash something doesn't mean it's najas. Mucus is not najas but you wash it. Not every disgusting thing is najas.
    - you are allowed to eat the hunt of your hunting dog (when you say Bismillah and release the dog), and for sure it has saliva on it, but nothing is mentioned
    - dogs walked in and out of the mosque of Prophet pbuh, and no one stopped them or did anything. If dogs were impure, they would be prevented from entering the mosque.
    - wash it seven times is not because of najas but there must be some medical reason (Ibn Rushd)
    Owning Dog
    - Hadith of owning a dog, except hunting, protection or agriculture dogs, good deeds get diminished by certain amount every day
    - angel Jibreel didn't enter house where there is a dog (a puppy was present)
By unanimous consent, dog that is used for a reason that is allowed, it is allowed to own the dog.
Vast majority (for example Ibn Nabawi) said if there is a maslahah / hajah (benefit), it is allowed. So a seeing eye dog, emotional therapy dog (for example for autism).
Three madhabs (except Maliki) allow dog ownership for hajah (some beneficial use) only.
Malikis are more relaxed about owning dogs without any benefit. They do not say it is not haram but makrooh.
    - They say scholars never prevented people from owning dogs nor did Sultans prevent it.
So what do Malikis say about the hadith?
Ibn Hibban, Abdul Barr and others say:
    - this hadith of Jibreel is specific to the house of Prophet Muhammad pbuh where wahi comes in
    - it is impossible that angels cannot enter where there is a dog. Kiraman Katibeen is always there.
    - some said this is only for Jibreel
    - many said this is about angels liking or disliking. What angels do not like is not automatically haram, for example garlic/strong odours. Wording of hadith does not indicate tahrim.
Majority opinion is owning a dog without a hajah (benefit) is haram, and playing with a dog or having it for pleasure is not a hajah. Malikis mostly say it is makrooh (best avoided).
Footnote: Prophet Muhammad pbuh wanted all dogs killed (at one point) but he was stopped by Allah, and Allah said dogs are one of the ummahs, so they cannot be commanded to be killed.
You cannot be cruel to dogs; Allah forgave a prostitute for being kind to a dog.

After I became Muslim, I lived with my parents and we had a dog whom I had grown up with. I was taught that dogs are impure when wet and I had to clean with dirt if a dog licked me, so I started acting very cautiously around her, and I think she could sense something was wrong. My parents also thought it was strange, and so it made Islam seem strange to them. Years later I learned about the spectrum of opinions about dogs and felt guilty for how I treated her.

During the time of the Prophet pbuh dogs acted as garbage control. They would eat trash and tend to congregate in those areas. Due to this, many were disgusted and worried about disease. That is no longer the case. Dogs now have vaccines and are kept indoors. It is even stated that dogs roamed the masjid while Prophet pbuh prayed. There's nothing negative about dogs in Quran and the hadith regarding them were narrated by a known cat lover who also had very questionable narrations on women.

Dogs have very close relation with their owner, they demand his attention and time and in this way distract from spiritual life. That is, what I see every day (in Vienna lots of people have dogs, sometimes unfortunately as replacement for family).

@@Ahmed-ob6ec Yes, that is true. In Islam we are encouraged to work for the Hereafter only and regard this world as only a temporary abode. That means, we should live a minimal life like our Prophet (PBUH) did, and if we don't do that and spend money in the way of Allah, then it affects the strength of our Iman, and when the Iman is affected, the amount of credit we receive for our good deeds is also affected. This opinion of mine is based on two hadiths saying: (1) There will be people whose good deeds will be like the mountains, but what they will do in their private life will eat away all those good deeds. (1) The amount of credit for prayer that a scholar will receive will exceed that of the one who is ignorant. I think this is because of the increased Iman of a scholar because of his knowledge. So, Iman affects the amount of credit and emphasis on worldly wants over the Hereafter affects Iman :)

He also made it clear that just because an opinion states a dog is not najas, does not mean you can keep one as simply a pet, so I don't know where you got that idea from.
