IGOT7 TRASH Preferably you'll need a bachelor's degree, a physical copy of your certification to teach English, passport photo...that's all I can remember off the top of my head
I'm glad you make these videos. I recently fell in love with the Korean culture and I'm hoping to move there in the next three to four years. These videos are awesome info!!
Amaira 蕫思成 I'm going to Yonsei University in seoul! They've got a really good program with my university here in America and I know that they've got really good programs for international students and offer a lot of guidance and support to their exchange students! I'm super nervous to travel that far away from home and be on my own in a foreign country but I definitely think it'll be worth it you definitely should go for it!
I just found your channel a few days ago and THANK YOU so much for posting this! We're waiting on a job offer for a contractor's job in Waegwan in a few weeks...needed this big time! We're moving with three children though (visited for a few months back in 2011, LOVE IT.)
Cassidy Sloan I worked in Waegwan back in 2014. If you are thinking of living there, very rural and quiet. If you are looking for a bit more city life, Daegu is 30 minutes by car. I lived in Daegu, near the Opera House and it was great. Large American community around with the military installations. Enjoy!
Thanks! I visited for two months a few years ago and got to explore Daegu as well as Waegwan. It's such an amazing place. It's been a dream of mine to move there. I love it so much. :)
What happens when you run out of the things? Like hair products, makeup, toothpaste and feminine products?? do you order them online from like.. Amazon if you can't find them in Korea?? I'm sorry if it sounds stupid..
Hey Mel! I'm about to join EPIK for the Spring 2017 intake and I was wondering about when you say to bring sheets, what size bed do they typically provide you with so I know what size to get?
my bed looks like a twin but it is actually sliiiigtly larger than a twin. I'd bring full sheets just in case you're bed is a bit larger - typically they're a twin or full size. so with full sheets you'll be covered either way!
Thank you for this! Moving to Korea in just under a month and I'm struggling with packing. I'm tight for space, so I might have to buy my bed sheets from IKEA in Seoul and I was gonna skip on the winter boots until you mentioned it!
Might be a silly question but do they have coconut oil over there? I use the oil to make natural remedies for deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser and toothpaste (so convenient, you can seriously use this stuff for everything). Also, an addition to your comment about feminine hygiene products, I certainly reccomend getting a reusable cup (such as the "Diva Cup"), it produces no paper or plastic waste and is super efficient for travelling or living overseas (I am currently teaching in Germany and they seem to prefer pads or or tiny @$$ tampons). They last over 8 hours too! I swear I'm not a spokesperson or anything but the reusable cups are awesome! Thanks for the helpful video!
they do have coconut oil, I just recently found this out lol. & I've heard of diva cups before but have been a little nervous to try it haha I just might have to though! thanks for the suggestion :)
Actually, we have menstrual cups in Germany, too! They're kind of... alternative I guess? They're definitely not mainstream, haha. I got my cups online, but I think you can also get them from the pharmacy. Can you get them at the supermarket where you're from?
Fantastic tips! I super agree. I brought 3 suitcases as well and regret it. Now that I have traveled more I think I would have been fine with one. Oh well. Live and learn!
In planning to move to Korea soon but I’m only bringing one backpack since I don’t need that much but this helped me decide what I really need and what I really don’t need!
♨️This was so helpful to me when I was packing!! The only thing I will add is if you are plus size do think about bringing your winter coat the sizes are a bit different here and you may have a hard time🌺
Thank you for making this! First video I have seen of yours and already subscribed. I am moving to South Korea soon so having this information is amazing!
Girl your beautiful 😍 I've just found your channel (since I'm planning on moving to Seoul next year) and I've already watched 5 videos of you 🙄🙌 Keep up the good work and the beautiful spirit ✨
So glad I stumbled into your channel, your videos are speaking my language :) Teaching abroad was a dream of mine but I got scared and got in my own way from pursuing it right out of college (I'm not that much older than you). Now I am revisiting that dream once more and not trying to let the feeling of it being too late for me freak me out. Anyways, thanks for the great videos!
Ah! I loved finding your video. I found it very useful. I'd like to add/make PT subtle, for Brazilians (and PT speakers) who don't get En, but there is no the buttom to do it. But I really liked the video.
Mel on the Move... Yes Mel.... I was wondering while watching your video... I WONDER IF SHE DOES HER OWN PRETTY MICRO BRAIDS? They look so light and uniformed. I thought.. SHE MUST KNOW HOW TO DO IT HERSELF AND DOES THEM WHENEVER SHE WANTS. Do you just remember to bring a couple packages of braiding hair when you come from home?
Powerful Piccolo :D hello I know Japanese French English and Korean When I lived in japan and new I was going to move to Korea I actually took classes and paid for them But I recommend to learn the Hangul alphabet first and get it memorised down because this will help you though out your time while learning Korea ... then you start with the basics by hello goodbye thank you yes no how are you I'm fine I'm not ok I am going bad counting .... then start with directions I did directions because I get lost very easily ... so I needed this badly but mostly look at sayings to how you get around Korea ... I also do foods ordering foods shopping ... then family and friends ... slowly learn them tho I did about 1 week on each topic .... and I memorised the Hangul alphabet in about 3-4 days ... My life's already set. My grandmother and mother plan to move me to South Korea when I finish college sooo that is 10 years away but I'd like to see some stuff about moving
loved the informative video Mel! :) I have a few Q's, is detergent expensive there? Also! Does the apartment that your school provides you with pots, plates, bowls, silverware, knifes...etc? Or you have to buy it all on your own?
thanks! no, detergent isn't expensive - comparable to what it is in America. And no, the apartment doesn't come with pots and pans, you have to buy them.
Hello :D I just moved to Korea like 7 months ago .... I already had my home ready but no bed sheets , decor , bedding , pillows and etc so I actually buy them in boxes and shipped them to my house aka my condo .... and I told my land lord can she put it in my building or store them somewhere till I get there ... she was very kind and Store them in a safe place ... but if you do want to bring a lot of stuff ship even tho it's expensive it's better then bring 10 suitcases of stuff in 1 flight I mean imagine carrying them in and out the airport xD
Hello Melody, i saw your video about being black in Korea. I just wanted to know if you are 100% black or you are mixed race ? Because i'm mixed race (half black half white) and i wanted to know if they do a difference between being black and mixed race. I mean will the comments be the same ? I love your videos btw :)
Hey- thank you! I am 100% black and if you tell them you are biracial they might have questions but they probably won't guess that is what you are until you tell them as that is not a very common thing to them.
Is Home Plus typically in most cities? Also, what size of sheets do you think we should bring? Will we find our size in winter coats there? Thanks for the vid!
hey im pretty sure u dont read the comments but i have to say iv been wanting to move to korea with my friend for quite some time and i watched alot of ur videos and from what i hear from u its amazing. everythings seems simple from the way the person sees it as. but my only question is do korean people understand u when u speak english to them
I really want to teach English in Korea and in other countries around the world. I was wondering if you could give a quick guide of what you would need education wise to get to that? I'm just really worried that I may be too late to follow this dream of mine. Love the videos, keep them up!
Hi Mel, thanks for the informative video. I am hoping to go to korea to teach english soon for TaLK. What provinces do you recommend in term of living/friendly school? I was asked if I have any preferences on the provinces I would like to teach. Thanks for your help.
oh I heard that TaLK program was canceled? but that's exciting! I can't really commend a province, each city varies. I'd suggest picking a city you would like and then seeing what province the city is in and go with that. hope that helps!

It seems like a lot to pack in luggage. Did you have your family ship you any of this stuff once you got there? If so, how did it work out for you? Is postal packages easy to send and receive in S. Korea?
I was able to fit it all but for certain things - the make up, tampons, hair products - when I did run out (maybe 6/8+ months later) my family did send me more. & yep, I'm able to get packages really easily but the shipping costs are really expensive.
I ain't even going to Korea anytime soon, but this was interesting.
I'm not even moving to Korea but I just love watching your videos! You're so positive and fun to watch :)
Sierra Kincaid that part lol

Ok, the shoe size was important and something I wouldn't have thought of. I'm size 9 so.. yikes!Thank you
Jenny Prevish same xD and in Korea it's like finding gold when you find a shoe size over 7 1/2 or even an 8
So agree with your list. I brought alot of thise products with me and was suoer happy that I did.
:)

Heey Mel ! Good to know I'm planning to study abroad next year in Busan, now I'm aware that I have to pack like everything
I knew for deodorant but toothpaste omg I'm gonna have 5 luggage..
Can we order online ? Does Amazon ships there ? I really hope so
amazon might? I'm not sure!
Agy Yang amazon ships and so does iherb
Thanks !
I know you said to bring your own sheets, but what is the standard bed size in Korea (specifically when you teach there and are given housing)?
I'd suggest bringing full size sheets.
BIG QUESTION (and hopefully not a dumb one) haha. However, for makeup do they need to be brand new? Like with translucent powder and things like that, does it need to be unopened and new or can it be preopened?
PLEASE REPLY Hey Mel I'm looking into going to Korea or Yonsei university, I know it's hard work to get into these two but I'm sure I can do it!! Im 17 and from the UK and I've never been to korea but I'm trying to figure out if I should stay in the Uk or just do it 🎷and study in Korea. I'm brand new to your channel :) I'm going to be applying for teaching in Korea through EPIK over my winter break so this video was really helpful! Which recruiting company did you go through when you first applied to teach (Korvia, etc)?
I applied through footprints recruiting!
WHat do you do if you run out of all these items and you wont be going back to america?

I'm going to be moving to China to teach in February I'm so nervous your videos really help see even though your in korea and I will be china lol
lol! I'm sure some things are similar. I'm glad it can help! good luck in China!
Hey Mel ! is it easy to get a job in korea if you don´t have an undergraduate degree ? could you be an epik teacher if you are not a native from USA but have a nice score on your TOEFL?
EPIK requires a bachelor degree so without one I don't think so but maybe, I'd so some research!
Are you planning on staying for 3rd year or are you going back to the states? If you're going back would you ever teach again in Korea?
I'll be going back to the States and maybe I'd teach again here, at this point I can't see it but never say never.
Hi! I was wondering if there was a way for family members or friends to send stuff, like packages, over there?
yep! shipping costs are just really expensive.
Okay cokey! Thanks! Would you be able to provide an estimate? And is there, like, a p.o. box, or how does that work? :)
Dokey*
I'm worried about the hair products! I'm going to China, and I don't want my luggage to be too heavy 😂
Do you need a visa to live in korea? And how much is it?
only 4 of each hair product ? do you know how much i go through?? now i’m stressing
youre absolutely gorgeous! 😱
aw thank you :)
I plan on moving to korea in June but was there any medical shots u needed before going to korea?
Nope :)
Does Amazon deliver in Korea?
My friend and I are going to a korean uni as a full-time student,We are going to rent an apartment to share. But we didnt know what to pack lol
I hope this was able to help!
It was really helpful, thank you!!!
It seems like a lot to pack in luggage. Did you have your family ship you any of this stuff once you got there? If so, how did it work out for you? Is postal packages easy to send and receive in S. Korea?

i want to come in korea to study in K-arts university. can you give me some advise?
Hi Mel ! I am planning to move to korea in 4 years through TEFL. Are you currently teaching english abroad with a TEFL certificate?
yes
