Been waiting for this video for like a year! Did not disappoint, great work. Also side note-you might want to use the word “humorous” instead of laughable to describe games that are funny in a good way. “Laughable” has a negative connotation and is almost exclusively used to describe something that’s so bad its “laughable”. Anyway great video!
I can totally support Eric's recommendation for Fairy Fencer F. I just finished playing it. The story is brilliantly hilarious while the action and gameplay are great. Each character has a special weapon called a "Fury" that as you up your "Revival Rank" can assume more forms for your combos. Different enemies are weak against certain elements and also certain weapon types which is where this comes in handy. I'd also actually recommend getting the DLC for it as it will only cost $10 for all the buyable stuff and there's plenty of free stuff as well. Nothing will give you a huge gamebreaking boost but it will give you certain extra dungeons and some other stuff to play with.
Tokyo Xanadu EX+ was so underrated, and the best game on this video. It's a perfect marriage of Ys and Legend of Heroes. Got the platinum in both versions. God Eater 2 Rage Burst was freaking awesome. Got the platinum for that and GE Ressurection on the Vita. Currently playing God Wars, pretty fun at the moment. Still have YS Origin on my Vita. Fun game. Don't plan on getting the platinum for that game. You have to beat the game at least 7 times. 3 times on the hardest difficulty.
To me Xanadu was a little disappointing. Some gameplay felt a little lacking. I feel like they didn't go into to depth enough on certain things. Such as Nemesis, certain characters and what the twilight is. Nor the the holy knights. Basically, everything had awesome premises, but they were lacking in exploration. Maybe Falcom will do their second to none story telling in the next game. The fact that I want to know more says something.
OMG. Witch and the Hundred Knight, God Wars and Lost Sphear are some of my favorite games in the longest time. They basically filled the secret of mana, ff tactics and chrono trigger gap like no other games have for me.
As someone that recently picked up a PS4, I love part one and two of this video. At first I was feeling pretty dismayed by what appeared to be a serious lack of JRPGs on that console, but now I know where to start digging for those gems! Thanks for your recommendations. Great channel.

Maybe not hidden gems gems but ones that aren't mentioned often that i enjoy are tohou genso wanderer, caldarius blaze, one way heroics, blue reflections, and omega quintet. Great list btw and am happy to say ive played half of these.
Glad you're back, Erick! It's wild how some of those games I'm very familiar with and some I've never heard of. I have been wanting to try Tokyo Xanadu and Exist Archive, soon as I can clear my backlog.......
Thank you for putting up this list. I recently bought "I am Setsuna" and it remainded me kinda like Chrono Trigger. I'm loving it so far and definetly going to try "Lost Sphear". Chrono Trigger was my first RPG and all time favorite.
I'm glad some else likes Fairy Fencer F, I played it back in the day in the PS3 but was shocked a couple years ago when I saw the PS4 port, the collectors edition comes with a fun hat!
A hidden gem that I really liked but no one else seemed to give a chance World of Final Fantasy. It’s basically the love child of Final Fantasy and Pokémon with fan service galore and I had a blast with it. It’s really only hidden because it came out just before Pokémon sun and moon and Final Fantasy 15 so if you were a fan of either of those series odds are you just skipped it and waited for the real next game in the series, it’s a shame. Apparently it had a remake on the switch but I don’t have a switch.
FIRST OF ALL! I literally rewinded the video to say with Erick "Hey guys! What's up" and when the intro played I rocked the fuck out because you're back Erick and that's fantastic man! Ys origin being number 1 on the list really shocked me. Now I really must get this game!
Welcome back :) Great video as always, i played only 3 games on the list and you got me interested in at least 3 more. Thank you for giving all these games attention and for showing them out. Hope you will have a smooth ride from now on
Nice list. I hadn't heard of most of these tbh, though I have been a fan of the YS series for many years. Ys Origin is a quality, top-down view action RPG reminiscent of Seiken Densetsu (Square/Enix's Mana series), Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia and several other classics of the genre.
Terrific list Erick wife and I were able to find an order 6 from this list and have our eyes out for the other 2 we wanted. Welcome back :) and it was nice to see a PS4 list :)
Great to see you're back Erick! You sold me on 2 games here, Dark Rose Valkyrie (too bad it's $80 in Canada on PSN) and Fairy Fencer F. For honourable mention I'd have to give Pier Solar and the Architects a shout out. It's an old Genesis game (from 2008 I believe,, and yeah I know the time doesn't seem to add up) with a PSN port to ps4 and I had a great time with the whole game. Also it can be purchased for under $10, Bonus!
I recently bought a used, very good condition ps4 pro 2tb and was planning on using it as a jrpg machine. Every single game on here is a banger. I was able to find one for just a little over 200 bucks and now I'm ready to immerse myself in the worlds of jrpgs on my days off. I can't wait.
Erickkk, welcome back! great selections here. I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphere are by far my favorites and i'm looking forward to their new game Oninaki. also, keep an eye out for Legrand Legacy that's dropping on PS4 any day now. you'll love it!
8:02 Looks like Sora from Kingdom Hearts 3. I have some here which I haven’t played and will be releasing outside Japan. Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk Arc of Alchemist Crystar Zanki Zero: Last Beginning The Caligula Effect: Overdose Death end re;Quest Saga SCARLET GRACE Langrisser I&II
For those who do not own a PS4 and are interested in these games some of these games are also on PC via steam. The games that are on PC : Tokyo Xanadu eX+, all 3 of the God Eater games (note God Eater 1 and 2 are sold as a single package), Dark Rose Valkyrie, Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force, GOD WARS The Complete Legend, LOST SPHEAR, and Y's Origin (as well as almost all of the other Y's games lol).
The PS4 has so many jrpgs, I can't even think about how many I own and still haven't played. Don't count what I don't own. I actually own half of the list but haven't finished own of them yet. Especially Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a great game I still need to finish. I'm still confused why it was so hard to find the european physical version though. Talking about hidden gems I really like to include Omega Quintett. It's a typical Idea Factory game but it has a nice story with some surprises (and an actual replay value because the outcome changes in the second playthrough) and a really good and somewhat strategic battle system. I also like to include Death end re;Quest but I'm not sure if I should call this game hidden because it got more attention than expected and also some surprisingly good scores.
"Only in Japan." It's been a while since I heard that. Nice list. I recommend collectors to get Exist Archive from Arksy site when it's on sale. You'll get all kinds of extra surprises that you won't expect.
I would recommend Digimon Cyber Sleuth All Tales of ps4 games Ys 8 Persona 5 .hack gu last recode for ps4 jrpgs I played so far. Most of these are not too niche though.
One I consider a hidden gem is Akiba’s Trip. One thing to forewarn about: it is very repetitive. You revisit dungeons a lot, and there are no shortcuts through them. The enemies in these dungeons do not grow to match the characters’ levels. But with that said, the story and the characters absolutely make this game. It plays like an homage and parody of all things otaku, with all of the characters designed to meet specific tropes (the NEET, the self-acknowledged “chosen one,” the adorable bunny-girl, the dark and edgy boy, the aristocrat, the mascot, top secret government agency, etc) but also subvert them. Many of the trends in the subculture of Akihabara are explored, and the dungeons evoke memories of mind-exploring games like Psychonauts. It’s basically the JRPG equivalent of Groundhog Day, only much funnier and even a little self-aware. I picked it up for cheap, and was truly surprised at how much I enjoyed playing it.
Exist Archive is awesome! More people need to try it. Thank you for giving lip service to Tokyo Xanadu eX, too...any fan of Falcom ought to pick it up. And finally...Ys Origins was the first Falcom game I ever played (I did so on PC). That's the game that got me hooked on that developer. Because of it, I went on to play Trails in the Sky, Trails of Cold Steel and other Ys games. Origins ABSOLUTELY should be played by everyone!
@@ErickLandonRPG My first ever falcom game was cold steel and I instantly fell in love with it especially the music. I immediately became a fan of them and manage to play through ys 8 and origins. Right now I'm currently playing cold steel 2
Hey man, love your videos. Have you thought of mentioning the name of the game after you describe it? You talk about a lot of games I've taken your recommendation on, thanks a lot brudda!🙏
Interesting tidbits: Grand Kingdom was at a time a PS+ title, so plenty of people might have added it to their library without really trying it, or just passed on it that month God Eater, at least in Europe, you got as well when you bought God Eater 2, though I don't know if that offer still stands
Your videos are AWESOME my friend!!! RPG's (and j-rpg specifically in my opinion), are probably the best genre in the games. When i was young i didn't understand this but as a grew older i now know that a good RPG can make you fell in love with it, something uncommon with others styles. In my opinion PS4 has some great j-rpgs but the father console of rpgs are PS2!!! Make a video for ps2 rpg's top 20 or top 25 may be because they are many!! There are lots of hidden gems in ps2 days, when rpg flourished!! For example Radiata Stories and Tales of Legendia, were among the best of them!! So Romancing Saga!! Wish they were easy to find nowadays though... Some are only NTSC - U and it's difficult to find them here in Europe. Continue strong my friend Erick for what you do is amazing for us who want to learn more for J-RPG and RPG in general!!
If you are part of the Towa Herschel fan club then you definitely need to play Tokyo Xanadu since she is a family member of the protagonist ( that really surprised me my first playthrough and it made said playthrough even more enjoyable)
Huh, after Witch and the hundred Knight I thought to myself "I wonder if Fairy Fencer F is on the list" and boom, there it is. It's not like top 5 or maybe even top 10 material for me, but what really surprised me is that it really worth at least 2 replays as the story changes considerably if I remember correctly. I also really have to play Lost Sphear, I completely forgot that I even have it because my backlog is like 10 miles long.
Great List, love Exist Archive, Fairy Fencer F and God Wars. The only one i don't agree with is Dark Rose Valkyrie as I always see it as a worse Omega Quintet. Maybe if I played it first, it wouldn't have been so bad for me. You should give Omega Quintet a try though. Right now i'm playing Blue Reflection, beautiful game but I feel it didn't use its full potential. Finishing it for the plat and has great OST.
many games that have been on my radar in this list, some I already have I'm currently playing exist archive actually, though on the vita. Hated it at times but probably due to personal circumstances, I'm loving it lately
God Eater 3,Witch & the Hundred Knight 2,God Wars: Future Past,Lost Sphere,& Y's Origin are the only titles i still need to play & experience though the others i didn't name are the ones i have worked on & also close to finishing
I couple of months ago I played and got all achievements for Fairy Fencer, it's not a bad game in the slightest, specially starting the game at the highest difficulty, that took a while.
Wow ive actually got over half of these for once 😀 Ive recommended it before but you need to check out pier solar and the architects. Its download only and it in 16bit style. Its so so so soooooo good. Hope you can try it one day. Good to have the top tens back!
I really love Tokyo Xanadu and played the death out of it til I finished and went back to Cold Steel.. But I couldn’t really get into YS Origin despite being a huge fan of YS Seven & Lacrimosa.. I’ll have to give it another try sometime.. The others on your list look pretty interesting too..
There are too many action rpgs these days, and not nearly enough good turn based ones. Maybe its because I am older, but I much prefer the latter. I did find 2 on this list I didn't know about (or wasn't sure about getting) so thanks man.
@@naila1888 what about the PS2 ones like Digital Devil saga and Nocturne or are you talking about the ones on the Nintendo consoles cause I'm fine with either one
I would like to toss Metal Max Xeno as another lesser known good one. It's basically a Mad Max RPG, with tanks. You play as someone living in the post apocalypse, the world having been destroyed twice over, first by the mad computer NOA, and then, when someone else destroyed NOA a few years ago, NOA's creations set about finishing the job, reducing the area of Tokyo to a desert, and presumably the rest of the world. It features a good story, not great or mindblowing, but still, it had a few plot turns I don't think you'll expect, as well as a fairly diverse cast, given its size, both in attitudes and outlooks on how things are. The gameplay is two tier. On foot, it's a basic RPG, each character, in a party of up to three, can carry three weapons, so you can swap between the various elemental types. In Tank is where it's at though, as each tank, again up to three, can have five weapons, meaning you can dish out the pain in a variety of ways. Each tank's equipment slots are unique to the tank model, of which there's 10+, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, as well as some nice designs, and lots of customization in color. It features a new game plus mode, as well as Hunter Mode, a version of the game with no story, just gameplay. Also has 5 difficulty levels, unlocked one at a time by beating the final boss of the game at the difficulty under it, meaning it takes 5 playthrus to get everything. nd there are special, Bounty type enemies that not only are stronger than the average mook, but serve as the game's bosses, some of which are optional. That said, I liked it, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention some of the downsides. there's only 4 real location types. Outside is destroyed city desert, inside all builds in you can enter are the same basic design, with the maps themselves shaped differently, inside the tunnels connecting the various parts of Tokyo, and a cavern area that is seen 3 times, and serve as bonus areas for high difficulty monsters. It also does not feature English voice acting, only subtitles, sadly, but in that case, I tend to just mute voices, but still, I know that will be a turn off to some. Still, I think it's worth a buy, if you have a ps4, and a PSN account.
Xanadu is by far the best game i've played this year. the music, the characters, the story, everything is top-notch. Fairy Fencer F is pretty decent, very funny. dont like how you have to play through it 3 times to get all the endings though.
Been waiting for this video for like a year! Did not disappoint, great work.

Even on a surface level, the PS4 doesn’t lack any JRPGs. In fact, it’s one of the more JRPG bloated systems.
Ys Origin looks really cool. It reminds me a lot of old style SNES games like Terranigma, Secret of Mana, and Chrono Trigger.

Loved Ys Origins!!! Need a physical copy asap
omega quintet is a good honorable mention. Battle system wise it's really fun.
My favorite PS4 JRPG is shared between Hyperdimension Neptunia VII, and Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.
Welcome back bro ,lot of love from India .
I'm satisfied with the list, although I would of added Nights of Azure series to it. BTW amazing shirt, love the band.
great to have you back. F RUclips for ever scaring us like that! Great video!
HES BACK!!!!!!
Glad to have you here!
Nice upload. Here is me wishing I can buy some for less than £10 before I watch the video
many games that have been on my radar in this list, some I already have
I'm currently playing exist archive actually, though on the vita.
Wow ive actually got over half of these for once 😀
Ive recommended it before but you need to check out pier solar and the architects. Its download only and it in 16bit style. Its so so so soooooo good. Hope you can try it one day. Good to have the top tens back!
I have 10, I love it. just don't like how you need so many playthroughs for 100%.
which version of god eater did he say didn't have aphysical release here? i have a physical copy of god eater 2
I had to listen to 4:33 3 times to realize you didn't say "Pasta-fuckalyptic"
I really love Tokyo Xanadu and played the death out of it til I finished and went back to Cold Steel.. But I couldn’t really get into YS Origin despite being a huge fan of YS Seven & Lacrimosa.. I’ll have to give it another try sometime.. The others on your list look pretty interesting too..
I'm hyped for ys memories of celceta they're releasing a ps4 version of it this spring
There are too many action rpgs these days, and not nearly enough good turn based ones. Maybe its because I am older, but I much prefer the latter. I did find 2 on this list I didn't know about (or wasn't sure about getting) so thanks man.
What games would you recommend if you like a darker story like the first Shadow Hearts game and Persona 2?... It could be on any console
Try Shin Megami Tensei. They aren't on Sony consoles though
@@naila1888 what about the PS2 ones like Digital Devil saga and Nocturne or are you talking about the ones on the Nintendo consoles cause I'm fine with either one
@@DouggieDaDucker Nocturne and Devil Saga are also great games. I prefer Nocturne though. You can also get them on the PS3.
I just started "Grand Kingdom" on my Vita. Love it so far!
Awesome, hope you keep loving it.
Ys. Origin has a free demo on steam and that made me dive headfirst into the series.
Any vanillaware game is awesome, that company is brilliant. George Kamitani is also a badass artist.
Xanadu is by far the best game i've played this year. the music, the characters, the story, everything is top-notch.
Fairy Fencer F is pretty decent, very funny. dont like how you have to play through it 3 times to get all the endings though.
it's not too bad, what I like to do for those games is just wait a few years between each play through.
