+HitFilm Hey, I have probles with the exporting stuff. I'm working on some gameplay vids and captured it with shadowplay in 1600x900, now I don't know which settings I have to choose for youtube in the export section. Could you help me with it
+The Million like with my dying light gameplay.. at first the screen is completly covered and when the gameplay starts it's just a little peace of the screen
+The Million It looks like your project and the video you're uploading to RUclips is 1920x1080 - normal HD res. However, the 1600x900 resolution is lower so the captured video won't fill the whole screen. You have two options - either create a 1280x720 HD project and reduce the resolution of the captured video to fit,, or scale up the 1600x900 video to fill the 1920x1080 project. I guess the most obvious thing to do is record at 1920x1080 in the first place, if your monitor and PC can handle it. :)
Hitfilm has impressed me SOO MUCH! And I would totally use it if my pc wouldn't lag so much during it. I seriously now feel like it's a lot better than After effects
you guys are so great (understatement) and I've loved using the free trials of all your stuff (i'm 14 and can't afford the full versions, but that doesn't stop me from watching the tutorials of it) but there are two things I would really like to know as I may be making a short film later on this year (2016). the two things are: 1) How to you get the glowing bit at the back of the engines on the x-wings (the red-ish purple bits that are on the 4 corners) 2) how to you make it look like the ships are actually shooting lasers. If you could answer me, I would be so grateful. Thanks!
+Josh Wooster Productions do you have HitFilm 3 Express? It's free, but it isn't a trial - you get a lot of the editing and compositing stuff fully functioning. 1. In this specific shot we used a technique of parenting a simple plane layer to the back of the spaceship, then positioning 4 light flare effects on it. Simple! However, for more complex shots that might be a bit limiting. That's when you want to do something a bit more procedural like this: ruclips.net/video/_mWgQBxprd8/видео.html 2. The Animated Lasers effect can be assigned to specific points. If you put a point on the guns of the spaceships, you can make sure the lasers always fire from there, and then have another point on whatever your target is. (alternatively, use a particle simulation, which +triem23 has done) 3. Explosions are a bigger topic. :) Head over to the HitFilm forums, as that's a better place for general technique discussion!
Well Done on the explanation and such question is he the one that coded/created the application? or is he just the one to explain it and market it (sell it)?
+prosp3ct2 everyone on the team here has a wide range of talents and it's a big collaborative process. Simon isn't one of the coders, though - he's on the marketing team and does a lot of comms and expert user stuff.
There's something weird appearing to happen with the normal maps on the X-Wing. When it's just solo spinning around it looks like the dots and lines are bumps (highlight on top/shadow on bottom), but when it spins to the other side of the model those same dots and lines are now indents. If the model was built using symmetry then the tangents of those faces might be reversed as well, which might be creating an error with the normal map.
I'm having difficulty with the camera and model animation itself. It doesn't feel right. Any tips or advice to animate ships and the camera to move more fluid and realistically?
I like hitfilm's 3D engine better than after effects, if we can find a way to port element 3D into hitfilm and hitfilm's 3d environment can interact with it I think it would be 10x better. :)
+KJA Films a simple starfield still image used as the source for the environment map effect would work just fine. The atomic particles effect is only being used to generate that still image procedurally, after all.
In terms of "effects" Hitfilm 3 Pro can do the planets, lighting, animation and particle cloning, yes. However, Simon didn't go into his Material settings for the model. Hitfilm 4 adds a new physical shader to model rendering. You can get looks from Hitfilm 4 you can't get from 3. I do a lot of 3D work in Hitfilm myself and the render of the final shot looks like he set the models up with the new Cook-Torrance shader. Short form, you can set this up in Hitfilm 3 Pro, but you'll work harder to avoid a "plastic" look.
I tried using a light flare as my distant star casting light on the spaceship, and then tried placing a directional light on top in the same position as the flare to cast light onto the ship. For some reason, the light ends up behind the flare, so the flare becomes shadowed out completely. How do I place the light in front of the flare, but behind the ship when it's directly in front of the flare?
Hey guys! Great video. I have an important question for my Star Wars fan film. Can I use this program for this and does it work for space battle/dogfight scenes as well? Thanks!
+Lightspeed Studios sure, it's perfect for that kind of film. Take a look at this video by +triem23 - ruclips.net/video/Pqr6aUeUzGs/видео.html It's an old video now but demonstrates some cool techniques, like using the particle simulator for missiles.
The way this shot works, you only ever see the engines of the hero ships, so it isn't necessary to set the engine glow up for any of the particle sim copies. If you did want to see the glow on all the ships, then you would set up the glow on the hero ship in 3D, then embed the ship and glow effects into a composite shot, and use that comp as the texture source for your particles.
Good tips! Pretty much how I set up my "Strike Wing" video with duplicate particle setups to add thrust and weapons fire. When I saw the teaser, I really wanted to see your lighting setup. Surprised at how simple it was! I suspect that's due to some Cook-Torrance tweaks for Roughness and Refractions outside the scope of this tutorial. Where did you get that particular model? I suspect it's a Turbosquid purchase, but the free X-wings on Foundation and Scifi 3D have all had major issues with bad geometry, so I am willing to spend some cash on a model proven to work that holds up to a beauty pass.
Hey! I'm a PRO 2017 user and I don't know how to use the MOCHA software. The comp doesn't work when I import it. Can you do a tutorial on using MOCHA now that it's a PLUG IN?
Hi Robin, thanks for the tutorial suggestion! We'll see what we can do to make this in the future. In the mean time you can find more about how to use the Mocha plugin here: hitfilm.com/reference-manuals/hitfilm-pro-2017#planar_tracking_with_mocha_hit.htm?zoom_highlightsub=mocha
I have latest version of Hitfilm Pro but there's no Environmental Viewer Effect. I tried the 360° Viwer Effect but when I try to pan around its still a flat screen. Edit: JK I realized I wasn't moving the camera with the camera controls 🙄
HitFilm Pro 2017 contains all the effects found in all the add-on packs, plus a whole lot more. HitFilm 4 Express requires that each pack be purchased to add the effects contained in each pack.
+THE BOLT the base version of Express can't do this, as you'd need several add-on packs such as the 3D models toolkit and the particle pack. HitFilm 4 Pro has all the functionality included, of course.
hello hitfilm i am trying to design a spaceship scene but the models i want to import are white and they are originally painted with colours. i would be exited if you can help me :D
The coloring of models will either be controlled by the colors you assign, in the Materials for the model, or through selecting images that contain details, in the Materials controls. This video explains both, along with the other Materials settings: ruclips.net/video/RG4wTsEC3Vo/видео.html
For some reason when I import my 3d model and put it into my scene it appears semi transparent, as if I have turned the opacity down to 70%. Its happening on all every model I try and use.
Is there a listing of the 3D model file types that HF4pro can you use as I tried to import a 3D model from scifi3d.com and the file type was not recognised. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. :-)

What are your computer specs? My Mac Pro is about 5 yeas old but cost $3,000 when I bought it and it can barely handle "FULL." I usually run at "QUARTER" with Motion Blur turned off... even then, the playback drops frames. Love the software, but please help!
+TriFlix Films this tutorial was recorded on a computer with a fairly middling i5 processor and an NVIDIA GTX 970 card. The 970 is a really great card for both gaming and HitFIlm, and is excellent value for money. What specs does your Mac Pro have?
Below is my current specs, but I guess it may be time for an upgrade. I plan on building 6K res editing work-horse of a computer this summer. Processor: 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB
+TriFlix Films we have a similar Mac in the office here for testing which performs OK, so I'm surprised you're perceiving such low performance. Of course, performance depends on many factors including complexity of project. Some tasks WILL cause rendering to drop below real time. When working with 3D you will need to sometimes turn off rendering options. Shadows, reflections and motion blur in particular impact performance. Check out update #3 which just came out today, as we've added some new options for balancing quality and performance, especially when working with 3D models.
+HitFilm It was a 4.5 minute video, rendering in 4k, with manual (no motion tracking) 2 point lights sword for the full duration. Took soooo long to manually do 30fps x 60 sec x 4.5 minutes worth of frames 😂 I was probably just pushing the limits of my gpu, thanks for the help.
Atomic Particles are part of the Audio Visual Pack found here: hitfilm.com/store/hitfilm-express The Environment Map Viewer is now called 360 Video Viewer :) - Oli (HitFilm Staff)
+Zachs Lego videos X Wings can get pretty expensive, but you can find them here: www.turbosquid.com/3d-model/x-wing/ Be sure to get either .lwo, .3ds, .obj or .abc to make sure they work in HitFilm!
Yes, www.scifi3d.com is free. The other responder was just saying that the scifi3d site is hard to navigate. You will have to dig through many pages to find the X-wing fighters.
triem23 there's like five different versions of the x-wing(i said it was free) www.scifi3d.com/list.asp?intGenreID=10&intCatID=10 they are on this page
You can't import 3D models into the free version of HitFilm, but if you render out the models using other software, then you could certainly composite a similar scene with the free version of HitFilm. To import 3D models directly, you need HitFilm 4 Pro. hitfilm.com/pro
What really sucks is you guys do these fantastic tutorials for people like myself to learn your program. but you can't do things like atomic particles in express. kinda makes the entire tutorial worthless. if you're going to do that could you possibly add a star field to a download even if it's just a quick one you've created from the particle simulator so we can follow along please
+Jarrah Oyen this is very much a Pro-focused tutorial, as it involves a lot of Pro features. Some of our videos and tutorials will always focus on Pro. However, in terms of starfields you can now do those pretty easily in HitFilm 4 Express. Atomic comes in the Audio visual pack, but if you don't have that all you need to do is Google a starfield image, then use the environment map viewer effect (now included for free) to wrap it around the scene.
If i purchase those add ons over time is that the same as getting the pro version? I'm still learning this program and would like to do so before i spend to much money. Loving the tutorials and will hopefully start doing more of this work (especially now your program has really helped short cut things)
+Jarrah Oyen HitFilm 4 Pro has exclusive features which aren't available as add-ons for Express, such as the particle simulator and 3D model import. The add-ons are great for when you need specific features/effects, but if you're after the full functionality of Pro it's most cost effective to get Pro up front, and you'll get more for your money as well.
thanks for that. I'll just hold out. appreciate your being upfront about it. i'll just work with what i have at the moment and hopefully in the near future be ready to upgrade to pro
+Jarrah Oyen no problem. The idea is to give people useful options. If somebody is never going to need the full power of Pro, then buying a couple of add-ons is a really great value model. If you're more of a power user, then there's routes there too.
I swear, this is better than any paid editor... I love this editor SOOO MUCH! Thank you for making this!
+Trocron We're glad you're enjoying it! Thanks for sharing.

+IIN8II it's a simple 3D plane parented to the back of the ship with 4 light flares on it. Basic, but works for this shot! :)

+HitFilm Could you make a little tutorial showing is how to do that? I can't quite figure it out.

You could just do the same as the lightsaber effects, with a plane of your colour choice e.g. Green. That's what I do.

how were you able to set up the exhaust lights, were they only on your first models and not on the particle simulator?
The way this shot works, you only ever see the engines of the hero ships, so it isn't necessary to set the engine glow up for any of the particle sim copies. nika katsadze I mean the website with the 3D models. The guy told about the site in the video
yes,but the site's kind of hard to navigate
Yes, www.scifi3d.com is free. The other responder was just saying that the scifi3d site is hard to navigate. You will have to dig through many pages to find the X-wing fighters.
triem23 there's like five different versions of the x-wing(i said it was free)
www.scifi3d.com/list.asp?intGenreID=10&intCatID=10 they are on this page
Can you not do this for free?
