    At about 12:00pm on Saturday, February 25, a party consisting of one skier and one snowboarder was involved in an avalanche incident on The Lip area of Tuckerman Ravine. One of the members of the team was caught, carried, partially buried, and uninjured. The avalanche was a large, hard slab and had the destructive potential to bury and kill a person. The avalanche danger for the day was rated CONSIDERABLE with a primary avalanche problem of Wind Slabs.
    Thanks very much to L. Parker for taking this video and letting us use it.

    I don't always ski/ride in the backcountry, but when I do I prefer to sit in avalanche paths while watching my friends come down... Avalanche awareness is so old school.

      To be fair: yes not a good place to stop. But, there were outcrops of rocks above him and 8 feet upslope he would’ve been above the crown. Still, slab slid very close to rocks to right of snowboarder. I wouldn’t want to be in BC with that boarder or skier (assuming skier knew boarder was below).

      Good question - either fell or really doesn’t know what he’s doing. Why is the skier dropping on top of the other guy though? I don’t want to be around either of these folks in the backcountry.

      Because we tend to think if skiers are so good to be in the back country or on black diamonds they should be able to scope us out in time and avoid us. And hes literally on the side of the whole line area...what do you want lol. Yall complain way too much. Pretend we are trees or a boulder and you have to avoid us like any other piece of nature obstacle. Like seriously its like yall cry over spilt milk lol.
      Now as far as this position to be in while in avalanche prone areas....yes should probably know better if doing that kind of snowboarding. But I cant throw too much shade bc I am early in my foray into backcountry too. Just did the slides earlier this month at whiteface and a BUNCH of backcountry lines w locals at stowe last weekend. It was a blast. I will def be a little bit before attempting Mt Washington tho!!!

      Once it has slid the snow left behind is generally stable and safe to ski on. If someone was buried you’d want to travel down the slide path and begin searching for them. Otherwise just reach the safety of a lower angle slope as soon as possible

      @@jarnold1789 In my AIARE level 1 course I do recall them saying to beware as a rescuer while searching for a victim secondary slides are possible so the snow left behind is not always stable. That can be the risk of switching your beacon to search mode from discover mode. If you as the rescuer get caught in a secondary slide while in search mode and you get buried how will they search for you, assuming there is anyone left to search? As a rescuer your safety must be priority, that from my Wilderness First Aid course

      @jarnold1789 Год назад +10

      @@danielchisena6609 Very true. Additional snow above the initial crown could slide and you have to be aware of other over-head hazards. The slide path should generally be stable unless there’s another weak layer deeper than the one that just slid, which could happen I suppose. Good point about being in a dangerous position once you switch your beacon to search mode

      @@danielchisena6609 depend if their is still hanging hazard that has the same runout path, but if there isn’t the avy path is a safe path to follow , as the force exerted by the avy on the snowpack is typically much greater than the force caused by your own weight.
