Hippotopia (Hippo House / Nijlpaardenhuis) : Zoo Antwerpen (Tour)

The hippo House is founded in 1880 in the Belgian zoo of Antwerp.
Created by former director Jacques Vekemans.
Mainly used to hold common hippos & pygmy hippos but mainly common hippos.
In 2003 the hippo house completely renovated with a outside pool added for the hippos, also wich a aviary with serveral birds (complete list below)
The 2 last hippos moved out (Imani to Dublin Zoo) & Hermien died of old age (almost 43 years) in 2024.
In 2025 the hippo house will hold pygmy hippos for the conservation program.
This video is uploaded on the birthday of Hermien (the 10th of oktober) in memory of probably the most famous hippo of the zoo of Antwerpen.
