    Her target audience is folks who love music. Folks want her to be only for them and they are upset because she is showing them that she is more than them alone. Also, THANKU for mentioning the criminally underated Dawn Richard.
    These folks think they own Chloe and her sound and she is reminding them that they do not.
    This woman is a southern prodigy. The album has r&b, rap, dancehall, jazz, country, afrobeats, and Spanish vibes and still makes sense❤ I have had it on repeat all day and she is challenging people to expand their musical vocabulary. The album is a masterpiece.🔥

      You got it all! You got it. 100%
      People want to define and identify someone that refuses all of that. It’s lovely.
      That is EXACTLY what her music is. A part of the ‘cultural reset’ conversation - expand your musical catalogue. The ‘high fructose corn syrup music’ needs to go and we have real, experimental music coming back to push that mess aside. I love to see it!
      And yes, Dawn Richard is big-sis-in-my-head lmao. I loooooove my Dawn ❤️

      @@TheJustinGreen MMMAAANN... This is musical storytelling at its finest. I have been watching the album trend all day and folks ARE understanding that they need to consume this as a complete work. It is confusing foe some because they want the 3 songs that they adore and to be able to throw away the rest, and she does not allow that with this story.
      I was also pleased to see our heavy hitters like Chis Brown (fake outrage aside), Missy, and Future supporting her.
      She has gone back to her roots AND given us some delightful musical challenges here. I think it is more obvious for those of us who sing and play instruments...EVERY GD SONG is FULL of multiple layers❤🔥 I love Dawn Richard and Solange for this very reason as well.

      This comment is it! I LOVE this album! People saying that there’s too many sounds must not listen to many albums!! Listen to Prince, d’angelo, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, sooo many different sounds. Even Rihanna has so many sounds on any given album.
      Just seen a comment on here saying that all the songs on in pieces sound the same! So which is it??? The sounds are too different or all the same? 😂people just want to hate on her for no reason. She is doing to much and making empire music 1 second, then when she switches it up it’s too boring? 🤦🏾‍♀️. Just miserable honestly. I think people with these critiques are people who don’t consume real music, they consume fast food type music and have no concept of artists being multifaceted and switching between genres 🤷🏾‍♀️

      @@chazj2425 Yep! My guess is, if they didnt know that she produced and wrote the album herself, we wouldnt be hearing ANYTHING about lyrics, production, sound quality, etc🤣
      And the folks saying it sounds like empire are parroting that goofy Pitchfork article.
      I have NEVER seen people listen to an album from the perspective of their own irrationality as I have with this album.🤣🤣🤣 We live in an age where Adele can be celebrated for putting out the same piano ballad album for 10 years...but Chloe has to reinvent music lolol....
      Chloe will continue to be succesful. The h8ers gonna hate. They dont like polished prodigies like Chloe. I see people who STILL insist that Bey cant sing or dance, and that she is overrated because she doesnt write her own songs and choreograph her dances herself🤣 These people arent serious.

      @@QuatMan On GOD! Not 1 lie told. Chloe is so talented and I think her talent and beauty both intimidates and triggers people and then because she is so humble and nice that makes her an easy target for wicked people. I’m sorry but the same people are hyping ice spice??? No shade to her but come on… they love the baby mama/ side chick stuff from sza and summer walker too but hate on Chlöe’s lyrics??.. it’s not making sense.
      YES!!! Love Adele but come on, talk about predictable and they eat it up every single time. They are calling Chlöe’s album boring because they apparently wanted an album full of have mercy and treat me… that they weren’t SUPPORTING! They hated those songs too! They bullied her for doing pop and not showing off her vocals. Now her beautiful voice is on full display they are mad?
      Like you said, I believe it’s personal, they have decided not to like or support Chloe and have to keep finding new narratives to support that decision. If Rihanna or Ariana released body do/make it look easy they would eat it up. If Chloe had released wild side or motivation by Normani they would have hated it. It’s honestly driving me insane, she deserves better! I think time will prove us right, Chloe is a generational talent. So true about the Beyoncé hate as well, that woman is unreal. Untouchable performer.

    Initially I couldn’t quite figure out the awkward feeling I got every time I watched Chloe. She’s beautiful and sooo talented. Then I realized it’s because I would always watch her sing with her sister. Halle is so calm and can give sexy without even trying. I think that made Chloe look like she was doing a lot but she was in fact just being herself. I think even as a solo artist, people are still thinking about her sister if that makes sense. I speak for myself in saying I had to take a step back and realize she is her own person and that’s when the awkwardness dissolved.

    Chloe is so versatile. The box that she's inside of in her visuals represents the box people put her in. She has shown that she can do different genres. As a 36 year I appreciated old school RnB vibes like Looze U, and even though I'm not longer in a toxic place I can still relate to cheat back because younger me had those thoughts. I honestly feel like they don't like her because she has ties to Beyonce. When Body do came out everyone criticized her for 'over sexualizing' the song, but they also didn't support Pray it Away. I hope she takes the Beyonce route and continue to make the music that she loves to do. Good music and vocals cross over to all people. She doesn't need a target audience.

      That’s nice in theory, but in reality they have money the execs expect them to make. In order to ensure that, a target audience needs to be considered. It is why successful artists are successful. Beyonce knew her target audience. Idc how much it looks like she just “went with the flow”, trust me she didn’t. The record labels don’t have time to wait for people to eventually catch up. They invested hundred of thousands in a artist and need to see a return on that.
      It sucks, but it’s business.

    I think she just loves music. She loves experimenting different kind of sounds. So that’s probably why, there isn’t one artistic direction.
    And don’t see a problem with that as I like different genres. I love body do, as much as I love Pray It away.
    People wants Chloe to be like Halle, which is not, and that’s the problem. The girl is young, it’s the first time she can experiment on her own, let her be. She will eventually stick to just one style.

Not to place blame here, but for that silly argument (speaking to others, not you) Halle would technically have been the one who "broke the group up". Expecting Chloe to just sit at home for a year without making music while waiting for Halle to finish filming was a crazy expectation lol.

    I remember 20 years ago being 8 years old in the front porch with my moms CD player having Dangerously In Love on REPEAT. to the point that it had scratch rings on it. I loved her passion. Her sex appeal(not at 8 tho lol). I loved her high energy. Her emotion. The heart and soul she put in every song. Her dance records. The heavy drums and percussions and Hip hop in crazy in love. Her vocals on speechless.
    I did not give a damn about how many Grammys she has, how many ppl are buying her album, accolades, does she know her target audience... I cared about everything I just said. I am not an A&R. I am the listener. There's a difference between the 2. If I'm not in the board room, I don't care who your target audience is if i like the music or if i dont. Valid critiques are always logical of course. But to turn yourself into a unpaid Twitter a&r to cover up the fact that you just think that Black women only matter when they live inside your expectations, is another. Ppl r extremely closed minded.
    It's ok to just critique and say I don't like something or it isn't for me. These ppl don't make any effort to understand her as an SOLO artist. Watch interviews. Listen to who she's inspired by. Learn about the music she likes.

    Chloe makes good and enjoyable on trend music for the most part. I hated Treat Me personally, but everything else has been pretty solid. Where her team messed up was by branding her image so sexual. When she came out with the body ody showcased in a way we had never seen on “Do It”, the world praised her. This to me, was the perfect balance. Showing she’s growing into her womanhood in a seductive yet palpable way for the general public. Now, her overt sexuality is synonymous with her brand more than having hit music. I think her team took it to the extreme. She didn’t yet have enough of a solid fan base or career to make that type of leap to an image so overtly sexual. It’s patriarchy and, have others done worse? Sure. But a black woman in this society is still a black woman. Whether we like it or not, she’s pigeon holed herself and has been fighting for her life since. I’m not saying its fair, but this is what I think happened. This is the dilemma in being a woman and the patriarchy; we’re going to celebrate you because you’re a sexual goddess and also shun you. Her team did not roll out the rebranding of her image properly.

    Great video and great points. To an extent I feel like targeted audiences are important and then they aren’t. They aren’t important because good music is just good music. A person can like a song even if it doesn’t connects with them. But then I say targeted audiences do matter because you have to know what market you’re selling your music too will your image connect. Chloe gives the “good girl” vibe so it’s kind of hard taking her serious making “hoodrat” type music if that’s not truly her aesthetic. I feel like perfect example would be Rihanna. Her first album she was known as “the cute innocent island girl” but her transition to her second album “good girl gone bad” felt more of a natural transition than what Chloe is forcing. I love Chloe and her music but I can see why others are saying the stuff they are saying

  • @fizzychizzy
    @fizzychizzy Год назад

    I think you are far too dismissive regarding the question of determining the target audience. Musicians have grown to be massively successful by understanding who their target audience is and super-serving them to insure that there is always a central core/base that is satisfied. Taylor Swift has a target audience. And she serves them. Now, of course she is larger than that audience now, but she knows that doing things that get the target audience excited helps to spread her brand, advertise her albums, fuel the excitement around tours. Drake has a target audience. Beyoncé has a target audience. Rock bands have target audiences. Some of their hits will transcend that group, but they know that they should serve their base.
    The issue, in my opinion, is that Chloe does not have a read on who her target audience is. And that is because its not entirely clear who Chloe x Halle's target audience is. I think the due should have released one more album before Chloe and Halle went solo, an album that debuted in the top 10 on Billboard. They were heading in that direction. I believe a duo album after Ungodly Hour would have had a lot of excitement around them and their audience as a duo would have been secured. Then, as Chloe goes solo, she would have a better understanding of what songs that audience would like, visuals, song subject matter, etc. At this point, I think she is doing stuff that any new artist would do, normal growing pains. But people expect her to come out and be further along in this process due to her industry connections, previous success as a duo, etc.
    But there is truth to the idea that hits are hits and they transcend a target audience. The question is if people think there are undeniable hits on this album. Time will tell. I also think Chloe needs to find a producer or writer to team up with that has experience. Thy should work together. Chloe would be able to lean on that producer/writer to help make more accessible music if she is overly concerned with having hits. Chloe would also be able to learn from that person. Justin Timberlake leaned heavy on Pharrell for that first album. There is no shame in doing something like this.

  • @Chucci
    @Chucci Год назад +9

    I think it's just conflicting audiences. One moment Chloe is a good girl the next she is a good girl *trying* to be bad and sexy and it just feels forced (and the *trying* part is what feels cringe. Plus she was pushing the hypersexual image in her songs, videos, and performances in a time where a lot of black women who would identify with her and her personality were just completely over seeing black women be oversexualized. It propelled her popularity but at the same time. She is too 'good' for the bad girls, and leaning too 'bad' for the good girls.

    • @Chucci
      @Chucci Год назад +3

      I think her voice is amazing. I love *some* of her songs. But in most of her songs I would say I like parts of it and hate other parts of it. I am really all about lyrics so once I feel like something is said that I choose not to resonate with, I likely won't make an effort to listen to that song again.
      Think maybe she should choose to be good in one song and be bad in the next. If you have it at the same time then it won't be enough of a mood for either side so the song will flop.
      But right now Chloe is mostly giving good girl trying really hard to be bad energy and it shows. She's gotta learn to harness that seamless grace of balancing both sides.
      She is lukewarm right now.
