    Super interesting! I have a question for you- how do you think the sets that require technology (like the Super Mario Bros) will hold up over time as the applications become no longer supported by LEGO on the App Store?

    • @TheBrickQuest
      @TheBrickQuest  2 года назад +3

      Great question! To be honest I’m not sure. I’m not really liking how Super Mario is trending right now so I’m not buying much in that category unless it is a standout collectors item set. If I were to make a guess I don’t think they will do as well in the long term once the tech only is no longer supported.

    Wwwwhhhhhyyyyyy ! Why must people do this. I just think... all that lego sitting just there.. in big quantities when someone could be enjoying it.
    This type of thing honestly frustrates me, especially when there are like 10 or more GWP or of a set etc. One reason why I order as soon as the gwp promos start. Then you have sets going out of stock lots especially ones that have been out for a while. I guess I'm kinda late to collecting lego in a sense, there was a time where I wasn't fully into it then I finally was making my own money and ordered the pirates of barracuda bay in December 2020 and went from there.
    My biggest issue I have is lego is already expensive as it is, then you have investors going and mocking up the prices.. sure it's a collectable thing... but I think it's more of a problem.. because of you want something you got to get it while it's available otherwise good luck finding something for a good price...
    Then there are investors who are only in it for the money and not the hobby those ones really trigger me.
    Like someone said in a video there is a sense of fear of missing out. And it truly sucks.

    • @TheBrickQuest
      @TheBrickQuest  2 года назад +2

      I can understand your frustration Ryley! I try to only buy my investment sets when they are about to retire so people have a chance to get their hands on them during their time on the shelf.
      Typically I buy at retirement which is around the holidays so that is why I will get a lot of duplicates on the holiday GWPs.
      I also see the benefit in resellers in that they give me the opportunity to buy an old retired set that maybe I couldn’t get my hands on when it was on the shelves. It may cost more but at least I can get the set. I have quite a few sets on my list that I want to buy from when I wasn’t really into LEGO that I will need to buy from resellers.

    In my opinion the best sets to collect are the sealed vintage sets from the most popular themes, like the Star Wars 2002 sets. The Jango Fett Slave 1 for example, has been raising in price 13% every year. Same for the other ones around that era. Modern lego is produced a lot more, so I’m sure those sets won’t be that rare in the near future.

    • @TheBrickQuest
      @TheBrickQuest  2 года назад +4

      I agree! Some of those vintage Star Wars sets have built some crazy value! There is still plenty of money to be on modern LEGO though as well. You just need to find the right sets. Lego Star Wars are a good buy most of the time!

    I’m curious as to what your actual profit is. Do you live in an apartment/rented house or do you own your own house? The reason I ask is because the space that you have dedicated to Lego, was that factored into your investment model? It seems like you have a lot of money tied up currently, do you know your break even point? With the secondary market growing fast, is it more competitive to get your sets sold, do you have to lower your price so someone buys off you?

    • @TheBrickQuest

      I believe LEGO Seinfeld will probably do well after retirement. Wait closer to retirement to purchase so that you can get a discount on the set and so that the hold time is as minimal as possible before you re-sell.

  • @depressedpumpkin7290
    @depressedpumpkin7290 2 года назад +9

    No offence, but how is this a worthwhile investment? Once you count in the cost of space, sellers fees accounting for ~ 10% final value fee, loss of product or damaged product that happens in all resale, insurance premiums to cover everything you own and income tax on sales since you're most definitely unable to slip under the tax man's radar with that amount of product whilst still beating out inflation? Not to mention your own time of individually listing, packaging and shipping everything upon time of sale.
    The odd sets value does go insane, but spread out over many, the average return likely has you at a loss or working minimum wage on a 5 year investment hold. That's if there isn't economic decline which leads to the collectibles and toy market shrinking.

    • @TheBrickQuest
      @TheBrickQuest  2 года назад +4

      No offense taken. If you buy low and sell high with a popular set, it is pretty typically to double your money after all expenses are factored in the sale. Not every set will be double but it should average out if the right sets are purchased.
      It’s also about the enjoyment for me. It’s part of the hobby. Finding sets at a good deal and then watching the value ride up after retirement.

    I have 2 question that I'm hoping you can answer. 1. How do you keep track of the price increases on sets you want to sell? 2. How do you know how well a set is doing before you buy it?

    • @TheBrickQuest
      @TheBrickQuest  2 года назад +1

      Good questions Kellan. I don’t use any specific method of tracking increases in price. I buy the sets with the expectation of holding them in the 2-3yr range roughly unless there is a trend I see that could elevate the price on a specific set. I will typically just check eBay pricing periodically which is where most of my sets are sold.
      As far as knowing how well a set will do before buying it. It’s hard to tell. I try to look at past performance, popularity of the set and theme to get an idea of how well the set will do after retirement. This is what I base my purchased on.

  • @SimonAllosserie
    @SimonAllosserie 2 года назад +1

    As you have a lot of GWPs, I assume you buy a lot still off Lego directly, despite saying you try looking for deals when buying. Is that correct? What are the reasons you choose to buy directly at Lego instead of cheaper alternatives for exactly the same product? Or is this all just from buying exclusive sets? Just curious :)

    • @TheBrickQuest
      @TheBrickQuest  2 года назад +2

      Good question! A lot of my bulk GWPs come from buying Lego around the holiday season. Typically Lego is liquidating the retiring sets at a really good discount plus you can get the gift with purchase is on top of that which is great. Throughout the year when I’m just wanting a specific gift with purchase I will just buy sets that I am specifically going to build and not necessarily investment. I’ll pay the full price for the stuff that I want to build but then also get the gift of purchases and hopefully double VIP at different times.
      I do most of my investing purchasing around the holiday season from lego.com as well as target Walmart and Zavvi.

    • @nickysoh
      @nickysoh Год назад

      Chipping in here, when you look at GWP set you gotta determine the value and LEGO does a lot of 2-3 GWP combos throughout the year as well as with VIP double points.
      So when those come around, that's when you really want to maximize your buying as the double VIPs with GWP is hard to beat. For example if you hit holiday seasons, the xmas small sets almost always sells really fast easily at $20-25. I've kept all my xmas GWP for years and recently started selling them for $40-60 each. Double VIP makes a set around 10% discount. And if you look at UCS or exclusive set, some almost always dont get discounted so those are the high ticket items to spend on the multiple GWP periods.

    I use HDX as well and I noticed that the middle support beam (horizontal) for each shelf has plastic bits that stick up and can scratch Lego sets. Learned the hard way on this when rotating a very expensive set on the shelf...scratched the hell out of the box. Also the HDX shelves bow under Lego weight after awhile. Also the HDX heights aren't adjustable and when I use the shelves for Lego sets that aren't as tall I seem to be losing a lot of storage area. 17 HDX shelves later and I finally realize maybe I should have used another system.. sigh.

    • @TheBrickQuest

      Good to know on the scratching. I haven’t had an issue with that yet but I’ll have to watch for that. I have noticed a little bit of the bowing. It hasn’t affected me greatly yet but I’m keeping an eye on it overtime. For the price they have done a good job for now but I would like to eventually look into the adjustable shelving as you mentioned to maximize storage capacity.

      I am not always organized. There are occasions when I have sets all over the place as well.
      I do try to mostly just invest in the larger sets and I’ve done all my selling predominately on eBay. I have yet to run into an issue. I try to box up my sets really well. I also take good pictures of the packaging and the box before it is sent just to try to cover as many bases as I can. It’s still not full proof that something could happen but I try to limit anything happening as much as possible and so far so good.

      @@afriend99 good question! If it is a more valuable set I am always shipping FedEx or UPS. I only do USPS for small sets or pieces. You get a reduced rate when shipping with eBay so my average shipping cost for larger sets is between $20-$30. So do you monitor spikes in interest or have an average hold time?

    • @TheBrickQuest

      Thanks! I typically hold for around 2-3years. Most sets start to slow down in overall growth around that time. To be honest having tried timing the trends but I could see how that would be a great way to get a quick boost in price/sale. Something I might have to consider moving forward. Is that something you typically watch carefully Lee?

      @@TheBrickQuest Have to agree with you there, with my normal investment portfolio … the 2/3 year wait. But in the last few years I have been monitoring the spikes in certain sets and have tried to follow it. But as you’re well aware, very hard to know what will and what won’t … but I do try to monitor new TV series or movies that can be related to sets. So for instance, have gone into the Venom and Carnage heads deep … not just because the Carnage one is an exclusive, but due to the new film/tv series due in 2023/4!! The Stranger Things I went big on and had 10 of those at £130, now going for nearly £300 and didn’t even hold on to them for a year. Anyway, enjoy your videos and content … keep up the good work. 👍
