Funny thing is tht I better get into selling on Etsy because I bought 10 3D Printers that were on eBay marked "as is, for parts only" from people who either didn't know how to put them together, or took them apart for some reason, didn't know how to use design CAD software or slicers, or didn't know how to bed level or adjust Z heights and sold them as broken. Some did need replacement parts and a couple needed rewiring. But now with 10 printers I should sell stuff. So, I did open a shop that I better start using. Plus I do my own designs as well.

Unfortunately, I have never came close to making almost 50k a yr. I do better locally then online doing print on demand and prototyping. I make only a few sales on Etsy a month I actually sell more on Ebay.
@@MichaelR1975 I’ve been wanting to start a business selling 3d prints, I’m more familiar with eBay than Etsy, which would you recommend to start with?
@@cabotmathiasen2962 I do far better on Ebay than on Etsy. I have 5x more sales on Ebay then on Etsy. Most of my sales come from local business. Either creating a prototypes or recreating thing for people that the manufacture no longer makes. Also still do a lot of on demand printing locally.
@@cabotmathiasen2962 depends on what you’re selling and how your driving traffic to your site. Etsy seems like it’s more for creative people expecting made items or trinkets. Most people that go to this site are looking for something that’s a “trend” or “artsy”. It will probably receive more traffic for 3D printing with less promotion but it also has more competition if you don’t have unique designs or niche stuff. eBay is good for driving people to buying more functional items and looking for a particular item. Such as solving someone’s “problem”. Example for Etsy would be something like a Stanley cup topper for a holiday vs an eBay example would be a CNC vacuum attachment for a wood shop dust collector. Both require promotion (RUclips, word of mouth, paid promotion) of some sort to maximize sells but each generate a different expectation. Hope this helps from my observations.

The uploader of a file it not automatically the creator. Just because the uploader choose a commercial license, doesn't mean the item is really published under this license by the real creator. This could technically bring a lot of headache if you rely on this.
The only issue I see with this is that if you find something that becomes popular, the barrier for someone else to copy you is basically non-existent. I just started selling 3D Prints too but I'm a 3D artist so I make all my own models. The only way someone could copy me is to buy it and literally model a copy by eye or use scanning equipment. The scanning equipment is going to give you terrible typology though and it's expensive.

I’m not who you are asking but I’ll throw my 2 cents in from the customers eye it’s always much more trust worthy to see a shopping page that’s filled out then mostly white space with a single item it makes you look a lot more established like you’ve been doing it for awhile other then just a beginner
10 to 20 items would be a great start, a good thing to know is that they are all similar items that would go with one another or make sense to be in the same shop

Not to mention the value of your time... I'd love to hear how you ship cheaply and cover loss( Shipping loss or customer lies and says the didn't get it...)
I try to remain at a 90% profit margin, anything under $10 usually isn't worth it but it all depends on who you are and how much you need to make, it's about making the processes efficient as possible, so that you're making a few hundred dollars in just an hour's worth of work
I tried Etsy, and in Canada, we get hosed on shipping; Etsy defaults to Canada Post, and they rip you off for shipping. A few guys use envelopes and ship them as letter mail. I would not use anything offline; I have consulted with a Lawyer about this and could be sued for downloading designs. The intellectual Property Lawyer said, " Regardless if an item is listed as public domain, it still is subject to ownership and could be challenged." I actually was challenged on a design I printed out which was listed as public domain and free to sell, and the designer demanded removal. So, I only build my structures or custom for sale.

Hey awesome video exactly what i was looking for! Just a question about the last step, shipping. Do you have a large collection of boxes and a label maker? Or do you have a different approach. Would love to hear it. The logistics of shipping is brain tease for me.
This is an AMAZING video!! Thank you so much for putting this together. Quick question, I am based in Canada, would it be fine for me to sell products in US? US has a much bigger market I can target compared to just Canada but I’m concerned about shipping costs
Hey thanks for watching! Being based in Canada is much more difficult, same for selling to Canada because the shipping costs are so high but it is doable it's just probably not going to be a full-time scale without a lot of extra work
A thing to know if you don't is even something under 1 pound in weight is almost 20$ in shipping so probably not worth it. I've sold some items to people in Canada but I make the customer pay for the shipping but over the 4 years I've been on Etsy only sold 5 orders to people in Canada.
@@OmniSoundAI appreciate the information! I really wish at the very least our market had more of a reach compared to the US 🥲.. oh well, I should still at least try
@@LuzdyOG Yea just have to find what's popular in Canada and capitalize on it. Like with marijuana becoming more of thing here and in Canada I've noticed a lot of things can be made with 3d printing that people will buy. Just the other day I saw that people like the idea of having a base stand for their bongs so it's harder for them to fall over and with how expensive some bongs can get I see why. Something I sell a lot to dispensaries is cases to carry joints in that are fully 3d printed, it can hold 7 joints and sell them for $2 each to the shops and they sell them for w/e they want (or sell them joints inside). But only costs me around 50 cents to print and I only sell in big bulk to make it worth my time.
Im confused for the shipping portion. My shipping options look nothing like yours. I have no experience to know what is best. Can someone please assist me.
How does the end buyer get the item? Do you print it and send it to them directly? Or does etsy have some kind of inventory (for a cost) situation in which they fulfill the orders as they happen?
Everything is funded by me this is Part gross and part net, it's the number that Etsy spits out to me and we are much higher now, only thing it doesn't include right now is materials labor, electric, and parts for your machines
One question I struggle finding a answer to is can you legally sell a remix of a design? The Remix is under the Creative Commons - Attribution license, while the original that the remix was based off is under Creative Commons - Attribution - Non-Commercial license. Would it be best to just steer clear of it?
I'm not a lawyer so I can't provide legal advice but, if it's non-commercial or the original was non-commercial then I would steer clear of it not only for legal reasons but because it's not right to take someone's design they didn't want you using for commercial reasons
I've been asked this before and it gets into more of a lawyer's territory however as far as I understand if it's a functional design it can't be copyrighted but if it's an artistic design they already own the copyright and you cannot just alter the design and make it your own since you're originally using their design
I update etsy revenue at the bottom of the video so you guys can keep updated, i dont have the time to work on it all the much atm so i have been slower than usual
Not exactly going to make much these days since everyone is selling 3d printed stuff the prices have dropped. You'll just barely make back the cost of the filament.
Can you please be clear about the actual profits? Revenue is very subjective. What are the cost? You made over $40K, but in the same period, what are the cost associated with this revenue? Are you including your RUclips revenue in that amount?
No I'm not including my RUclips revenue The number that I state of my videos is always just my Etsy account that I use for RUclips, We are much much higher now but yes there's definitely some costs and material, power, parts and labor
@@glennbrian3d Print Farm Academy does a pretty comprehensive video on this subject with his "Why I charge $55 for this 3D printed part" video. Hello, I am very interested in starting a 3d printed store. Just one question, you're telling me that I can LEGALLY sell free 3D prints and not get in trouble just by pasting the licencing thing on thingiverse? Much appreciated reply if you do so
Read a bit more about licensing, and you'll know what you can and can not do. Other than that, most people will contact you to take it down instead of directly suing you
How would you do this for many small items? Sell them as a lot? I can see people asking me constantly "Can I get a deal on shipping, im buying this and that and...". Also, Im curious about how you handle special requests in general (e.g. can I get this print but 1.5x the size).
Hey Adam, if you're going to sell small things like $4 items you need to sell a lot of them, making only one or two color options available will help with this when things get hectic, if someone has a special request you need to come up with what your time is worth, so say if you're charging $50 an hour to design it would only take you about 3 minutes to 1.5 times the size so I would just charge him extra $5 or so for your time and then whatever your need to charge for the cost I'm going to make a video specifically on what to charge for your 3D prints soon
i dont know much about resin printing but some (i dont know how many, or for how much they cost) resin printers can print the entire layer at once, so it takes the exact same amount of time to print 1 really small, or a dozen really small prints. perfect for small prints because resin printers are just, smaller
hopefully you made ur own website to sell... way cheaper... etsy is a total rip off... dont forget spool price, electricity, time, shipping, and taxes... theres a lot to actually consider folks. It's possible to profit but you need to make a good spreadsheet for production evaluation
@@glennbrian3d I forgot to add how proud I am of y'all and your accomplishments ... so many people trying to flood the market and it's always great to see a shop with dignity who actually links the license and creators.
My personal opinion of all these business videos, making any real PROFIT from these ventures, is like hitting the lotto. There's no promise. As time goes on, it's less and less likely you will make money. Printers are so good and so cheap, this will also be a business venture that will limit your customer base to really old folks who are clueless about tech! Ignorance would be the only reason to buy something another person printed! Wood working, is a skill. Download a file, loading material into a printer, and hitting the start button is not a talent. Not saying it's super easy, but yes, it's pretty close to super easy! Hey, god bless! You got in just in time. I suspect in two years, there will be almost Zero who will tolerate paying 20x the price for something they can print at home.
@@glennbrian3d I expected a different type of video when I typed that. Didn't realize it was just a how to post to etsy video lol. Check out my video on how to get free shipping labels
What is the name of your shop? I am having trouble finding it.
Hey Benny, im not giving that out just yet but stay tuned! When 10,000 people go to your shop from youtube it really messes up the conversion rate lol
What is the link to your etsy youtube you talk about in this video?
ive combined them into one for now
Great video bro
Thanks!
Hey awesome video exactly what i was looking for! Just a question about the last step, shipping. Do you have a large collection of boxes and a label maker? Or do you have a different approach. Would love to hear it. The logistics of shipping is brain tease for me.
Found the link to your etsy channel.. wil do own search first!..
Yeah thanks I was going to say I think I answered all those questions on my other channel 😜
Check out "Glenn Brian" channel
thx
Of course!
@@OmniSoundAI it is very expensive You need to have separate settings for Canada
What is your other Etsy channel you keep referring to?
Well?
Hello?
how do you calculate how much it's gonna cost to print and how to determine how much to sell it for?
This is a video I'll be coming out with shortly!
Where’s the link to your store?
How does the end buyer get the item? Do you print it and send it to them directly? Or does etsy have some kind of inventory (for a cost) situation in which they fulfill the orders as they happen?
You ship it to the customer
You send it out through their system
whats the etsy shop named?
I notice you didn't mention the name of your Etsy shop. Why?
Gross or net? Are you funding it and your housing and and your utilities and bills yourself or are you subsidized by family?
Everything is funded by me this is Part gross and part net, it's the number that Etsy spits out to me and we are much higher now, only thing it doesn't include right now is materials labor, electric, and parts for your machines
One question I struggle finding a answer to is can you legally sell a remix of a design? The Remix is under the Creative Commons - Attribution license, while the original that the remix was based off is under Creative Commons - Attribution - Non-Commercial license. Would it be best to just steer clear of it?
I'm not a lawyer so I can't provide legal advice but, if it's non-commercial or the original was non-commercial then I would steer clear of it not only for legal reasons but because it's not right to take someone's design they didn't want you using for commercial reasons
what printer do you use
Right now the majority of my printers are Prusas Mk3s
What's your etsy store?
I used to put it up but when 10k people a week go to your etsy shop and dont buy anything it causes problems haha
Hey Glenn, what is the name of your Etsy shop?
Hey Rory, im not giving that out just yet but stay tuned! When 10,000 people go to your shop from youtube it really messes up the conversion rate lol
@@glennbrian3d sounds good! I'll be waiting to check out your shop and use your tips to grow mine
have you or will you ever consider selling on ECWID ?
I've never heard of this
what your etsy and other channel I can't find them
Sorry this is outdated I uploaded everything to the same channel to keep everything on one
Do we have to sell on Etsy? Can we use eBay, Mercari etc?
You can sell wherever you want Etsy is probably the best avenue however
hey quick question, could someone remix the cat holder and then share their new design but for non-commercial uses?
I've been asked this before and it gets into more of a lawyer's territory however as far as I understand if it's a functional design it can't be copyrighted but if it's an artistic design they already own the copyright and you cannot just alter the design and make it your own since you're originally using their design
fantastic video! thank you so much for the info and sharing your expertise :) wishin you more success
Thank you so much for the kind words Victor!
Hey whats the name of your etsy shop?

@@glennbrian3d lol I understand. Just thought I’d ask.
How much revenue are you making past 30 days? What about YTD?
I update etsy revenue at the bottom of the video so you guys can keep updated, i dont have the time to work on it all the much atm so i have been slower than usual
Do you sell 3d prints on amazon? Would this work on amazon?
Yes I'll eventually get into this it is much more complicated however
why not have your shop link in your description?
I used to put it up and then 40,000 people a month would go there and not buy something so it kind of messes up the shop
@@glennbrian3d ahh okay
In min 1.15 you are saying from reveneu your cost is only 10% of it ? Is that about right ?
My average cost of materials is about 10% of the sale price
@Glenn Brian 3D ah but only Material not including fees, your working hours, postage or anything else
Not exactly going to make much these days since everyone is selling 3d printed stuff the prices have dropped. You'll just barely make back the cost of the filament.
Not really. Most things cost less then 2$ to print and you can sell at 4-5$
You should not do a 1 integer SKU. When you get back around to 10, you're gonna have a bad time
My Skus are 8 digit, planning on releasing a video on how I do my skus
Can you please be clear about the actual profits? Revenue is very subjective. What are the cost? You made over $40K, but in the same period, what are the cost associated with this revenue? Are you including your RUclips revenue in that amount?
No I'm not including my RUclips revenue The number that I state of my videos is always just my Etsy account that I use for RUclips, We are much much higher now but yes there's definitely some costs and material, power, parts and labor
Yooo, can you do a video on how to quit you dayjob with a bambu p1s :P
You would definitely need more than one but you can do it for sure
Glenn, how can I actually make a profit on Etsy with all the fees?
Hi Roger, You have to build it into your pricing model
Any chance you have a video on what that would look like?
@@rogerkoonce5217 I'm planning a pricing video soon
@@glennbrian3d Print Farm Academy does a pretty comprehensive video on this subject with his "Why I charge $55 for this 3D printed part" video. I know you're a busy guy but maybe sometime whenever you have time you could maybe expound on this one or if you have any tips or tricks you could share those. Thanks for your videos! It's very much appreciated!
Profit or turnover?
Gross Profit
It was 42k in revenue

Hello, I am very interested in starting a 3d printed store. Just one question, you're telling me that I can LEGALLY sell free 3D prints and not get in trouble just by pasting the licencing thing on thingiverse? Much appreciated reply if you do so
The only true way to know is speak to a lawyer
@@ithaca2076 That's true however there's more processes that need to be taken into account that take longer like curing and drying
hopefully you made ur own website to sell... way cheaper... etsy is a total rip off... dont forget spool price, electricity, time, shipping, and taxes... theres a lot to actually consider folks. It's possible to profit but you need to make a good spreadsheet for production evaluation
Excellent points, I'm going to make a video soon on what to charge for your prince and how much it actually cost
@@glennbrian3d I forgot to add how proud I am of y'all and your accomplishments ... so many people trying to flood the market and it's always great to see a shop with dignity who actually links the license and creators.
@@donniem7979 thank you for the kind words!
stuff you can only do in the US lol no one in aust would pay 10$ for a phone stand , might get 2$ for it
You would be surprised what people will buy lol
since this video is a year old, does it still hold true and is it still profitable?
Still doing really good
My personal opinion of all these business videos, making any real PROFIT from these ventures, is like hitting the lotto.
Still making about 100k a year for about an hour or two a day so, so far so good!
@@glennbrian3d Well, if I could pull in 200k a year printing, LOL, I'd be doing that starting today!
@Curious_Skeptic you can!
20 seconds in. You only have 10% cost in your product?!
In materials ya
Usually when they do a video like this it means sales went to sht and they are looking for a new source of income lol
Well, if he shows his real secrets anyway, haven't watched yet
Thanks for the comment Wayne! I update the income so far at the bottom of every video
@@glennbrian3d I expected a different type of video when I typed that. Didn't realize it was just a how to post to etsy video lol. The ones where people give away everything like their shop, what they are selling, how they picked those products, etc. usually indicate their profits went to sht so they are now "selling a system" for a new source of income.
Wassup

You don't mention how much Etsy takes out, which is 21%.
Each shop will be different, I'll do a total cost analysis at some point

Surely this cannot be legal 😂🤦🏼♂️
Definitely check with your lawyer 🙂

Not very helpful and misleading. “How I sell on Etsy” and tips, was NOT what this video was about. All you provided was light training on how to add an item to your store.
Sorry Jason I wish I could help more, I can't cover everything in just one video I have a lot of videos trying to cover the whole entire process
