  • In September 1835, Chopin met with the Wodziński family in Dresden. During this visit, he first offered Maria the incipit of the Nocturne in E-flat major, with the wish "soyez heureuse" ("be happy"). Two days later, before his departure, he dedicated to her the Waltz in A-flat major. This waltz, like many of his works, remained unpublished during his lifetime due to his overly harsh self-critique.
The Waltz in A-flat major offered to Maria Wodzińska has been called "Les adieux." Maria wrote a few days after their parting, "On Saturday, when you left us, we were all walking around sad, our eyes filled with tears. You were the subject of all our conversations. That Waltz - the last thing we received and heard you play - has brought us closer together. We found pleasure - they in the listening and I in the playing, as it reminded us of our brother Chopin."
In my performance, I aim to convey the light melancholy that permeates this waltz, reflecting the tender emotions Chopin felt during his farewell.
Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy this beautiful piece.
