Making a Wire Snelled Hook Tool

  • Snelling hooks is usually done with line but sometimes you need to wire snell a hook. I like to wire snell hooks that I use to make spinner baits but some folks wire snell leaders on to their hooks. Wrapping the wire on the hook by hand can be slow and painful so I designed a tool to do it for me. In this video I show you how it works and how to make your own.

Its possible....but really difficult. Ive made some from spring steel stainless but only because I wanted some 1/2 inch diameter. Anything smaller and you need a custom jig made frome hardened steel...not worth it.

I have looked and looked on RUclips for a DYI wire twisting tool for making spinners. Tack-L-Tool is the closest simple wire twisting tool I've found. The problem with it is it creates too big of a loop for my taste. I the loop were smaller, it would be perfect. It's hard on the hands to use round nosed pliers and using my fingers to wrap the wire close to the eye. The crank on the the Tack-L-Tools for twisting part section close to the eye is preferred. Could you come up with something that would work like your wire snelled hook tool that would work for creating small spinners, like the Mepps or the Panther Martin? If anyone can do it, it's you. You're awesome!

You can find ss wire in straight segments up to 24 inch lengths pretty easily. The best bet is to Google stainless steel wire and find the best price you can. I've been using orthodonture wire for a while it's actually at a decent price.
