Though Sting would have his most passionate disagreements in The Police with drummer Stewart Copeland, he loved his style & approach, saying Stewart was always finding a way to 'elude the obvious': not play a standard beat or expected rhythmic pattern.
That idea is well at work in this tune, with rhythmic ideas in drum and bass lines (and their interplay) evading the down beat in bars of 7/8 time. Add harmonic/melodic overlay between instruments, and important and clever text lyricism, and great music is born. Even the title "Canary Yellow" suits the lyric's' theme given the historic mining use of a canary.
We can be thankful the internet ushered in the dissolution of the recording industry's iron-grip-control of artists' significance by record labels; where great musicians can have material "out there" to be found and its merit will become apparent, not contingent on a guy sitting at a desk. (Remember, Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was discouraged, as it was not a marketable tune.)

What makes Haken's songs so powerful is that the lyrical genius matches the harmonic genius. The harmony is sweeping and has that nostalgic feel to it, which allows it to transcend multiple generations at once; making it unifying across multiple genres and tastes. Then the lyrics on top of it are unifying as it can appeal to the multiple POVs considering who it applies to. This is the stuff that has been missing for many years and Haken is not the only one that has this skill, but they're certainly one of very very few that do.
Good musicians make art that speaks to the listener on an individual level. It's the same as visual arts; a different person may see a different message that reflects their own experiences. This is what Haken does with music. It can speak to anyone, no matter what side of a debate they're on, what side of a line they're on, what they're going through now vs what one may go through later - they write music that carries meaning to everyone and anyone, and it also carries itself through your life stages as well.
Haken's music is truly THE Human experience, personalized for all of us.

The structure of the album reminds me Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater. They are a few songs, like an heavy one to start (The Glass Prison - Prosthetic) and an emotional one (Disappear - Canary Yellow) before the big one is coming. (a 40+ min song cut in 8 parts for Dream Theater - Messiah Complex cut in 5 parts for Haken).
The only difference in the structure is that Haken added a last song after Messiah Complex. "Only Stars" I guess it will be a INCREDIBLE ending. Like Bound By Gravity or something like this. Can't wait to hear the whole album.

@@alexandreluiz281 it's definitely not the best opening song, but as a standalone, Prosthetic is pretty interesting and the technical aspect of it is impressive. It's a lot more diverse than a good number of previous songs, even if it might not be as good (in my humble opinion.)

It's the perfect embodiment of how post-war suburbanization subdued women and isolated communities while sewing the seeds for society's undoing. It's a truly tragic situation. Thank you for this.

I am amazed and shocked at the same time. Where did this masterpiece come from? Haken did not seem to have done anything resembling Canary Yellow in their past. I haven't even heard of them (shocking, yes). Some of their earlier material reminds a lot - a little too much - of Tool (one of my favorite bands), both style and video wise. Anyway, Canary Yellow has become my tune of the year, and the best tune of the last 10 years.
