Living Legacies is a series of documentaries by MOPA that takes a deeper look into the traditional system of teaching in India, especially in the context of the performing arts. Featured herein are eminent musicians who have trained under illustrious teachers and represent great schools of Carnatic music. As they recall their discipleship, they bring to light facets of their teachers that would otherwise be lost in the passage of time. They proudly hold onto the values they have imbibed amidst changing times and trends. Even with fairly busy performing careers, they have trained several students in their respective styles, passing on their musical legacies to future generations.
Their stories are a throwback to an era not long gone, when the student spent considerable time with the teacher, with full faith in the teacher and the process.
Today, this relationship is based on considerations of time, money, space and availability. Intellectualizing art has replaced an innocent faith in it. In an increasingly competitive environment, it is now based on the capacity of the teacher to groom students into successful performers, on active interaction but not dependence, ideally long-term but terminable when required. What does the relationship mean in our times?
Episode 2 of Living Legacies brings to you Rama Ravi, a worthy legatee of the Dhanammal school of music. She describes her training and interactions with several members of that family, such as T Viswanathan, T Brinda, T Mukta and T Sankaran. She also recalls with fond nostalgia the great gurus who taught during her childhood years in Kalakshetra and in doing so, takes us back into a time where learning was a process of joy, wonder and a quiet excitement in little things. As a representative of the Dhanammal school known for its enviable repertoire of padams, javalis and rare compositions of the Trinity, Rama Ravi is also an eminent teacher and has trained several students. The legacy lives on…

Artists should not stoop down to the audience level but bring up their standard is a very valid point. Todays artists should keep this mind and improve the standard of the concerts.

    Dear Nanditha:
I watched the re-play of the program. I really enjoyed your mom’s open and frank talk on music; she must have been a tough teacher inculcating discipline in her students; and thus making them respect and value our music. She is absolutely right, and I admire her courage in openly refusing to have a coffee & bonda caterer set up his pandal near the auditorium, for the use of the listening public!! The artists rehearse, prepare themselves and deliver with devotion and precision so that the audience listen with keenness and get completely immersed and practically drowned in the joy of listening-
forgetting all else. Music just captivates the ardent listeners’ mind. We don’t just need a crowd in the auditorium but only those who are genuinely interested in listening to, and applauding the artists….
I must say you are fortunate in having only ONE guru (gurvi) and following her “style” of singing carrying it forward into the future generation. You do have a lovely feminine voice, which is deep and steady. All you need to do is, keep on singing and then your throat will open up further…..reaching your melodious voice all across the auditorium even WITHOUT the presence of a mike!!
My best wishes and aseervadams to both of you.
It is a pleasure and pride for us to have you and your mom here in Nana Nani living in our midst.
